Why consider an RN/BSN program? There are many personal and professional reasons for pursuing a BSN. Here are just a few:

• Mortality rates and medication errors are reduced in hospitals with higher numbers of BSN- and graduate-prepared nurses.

• The National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice, a group that advises congress and the Secretary for Health and Human Services about nursing, recommends that at least 66 percent of nurses have a BSN or higher by the year 2010.

• Many career advancement opportunities require a BSN such as a nurse anesthetist, nurse manager, nurse educator and community nurse.

• You will be prepared for an advanced degree program to pursue careers such as nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, nurse midwife and nursing educator.

• A BSN will provide you with the knowledge of health promotion, health maintenance and restoration, healthcare policy and population-based nursing.

• You will gain increased knowledge in evaluating and delivering evidence-based care.

From 2000 to 2004, the number of

nurses pursuing baccalaureate

degrees increased by 12.9%

while those pursuing graduate

degrees increased by 37.0%.

In 1910, the Kent State University Normal School was established as a college for training public school teachers as part of the Lowry bill, which also created a sister school in Bowling Green, Ohio, now known as Bowling Green State University.

In the early 1960’s, seeds for a burgeoning nursing program were planted. The National League for Nursing came to Kent to establish a baccalaureate nursing program. In the fall of 1965, students from two hospital nursing programs, St. Luke’s and Mt. Sinai, spent their freshmen year in residence on the Kent Campus. The Ohio Board of Regents granted approval in 1966 and the National League of Nursing offered a full eight-year accreditation in 1971, just prior to the first class graduating from the School of Nursing.

Just six years later, graduate students were admitted to the School of Nursing, followed by the development of several post-master’s certificate programs. Within the decade the school outgrew several offices, then several temporary facilities on campus until 1978 when

the school moved into a newly constructed building. It was later renamed Linnea E. Henderson Hall, School of Nursing in 1985, after the founding dean, following her death in 1984.

College status was granted in 1999 and was followed by the establishment of a joint PhD program with The University of Akron.

In 2007, the Ohio Board of Nursing granted the college a five-year approval following a successful evaluation of both the RN to BSN and the BSN programs. In the spring of 2008, Modern Healthcare magazine ranked Kent State University College of Nursing as the third largest nursing school in the United States in terms of enrollment.

The College of Nursing continues to build on this strong history as we prepare nurses for successful careers in the 21st century.

The College of Nursing is the state’s largest nursing school. We offer one of the most comprehensive undergraduate programs in Ohio, a master’s degree in nursing and a doctoral program in collaboration with The University of Akron. Our graduates have a reputation for excellent academic performance, clinical knowledge and leadership ability.

The Center for Nursing ResearchCollege of Nursing faculty are committed to building a strong evidence base for nursing practice and the Center for Nursing Research assists faculty researchers in their scholarly endeavors.

Our faculty members are among the most productive researchers on Kent State’s campuses. The recently-conducted Delaware Study of Instructional Costs and Productivity places nursing well above the faculty mean in research productivity at participating four-year institutions in the U.S. Our funding for the 2007-2008 academic year exceeded $4 million.

Accreditation and ApprovalsKent State College of Nursing recently received a full five-year approval of its Associate of Applied Science and Bachelor of Science in nursing programs from the Ohio Board of Nursing. In addition, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), which ensures the quality and integrity of baccalaureate and graduate education programs, has also awarded Kent State with full accreditation. The college’s Associate of Applied Science in nursing is also accredited by the National League for Nursing. We are also a proud member of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Simulation LabThe Olga A. Mural Nursing Simulation Laboratory, a cutting-edge patient care complex designed to emulate the conditions and situations nurses encounter in realistic settings, was dedicated and opened in spring 2008. The new laboratory complex includes three patient care pods outfitted with a high-fidelity manikin, interactive adult and baby manikins, and a virtual intravenous simulator for the practice of skills and critical thinking in realistic clinical situations. Small group observation of patient care is incorporated through a large two-way mirror between the patient care complex and a viewing seminar room. The lab is a $250,000 gift from Olga A. Mural who is a long-standing friend and supporter of Kent State University.

New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program GrantKent State College of Nursing is among the first in the United States to receive a $100,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through its New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program. Scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each will be distributed to 10 entry-level nursing students in the accelerated BSN during the 2008-2009 academic year. Award preference is given to students from groups underrepresented in nursing or from disadvantaged backgrounds. This groundbreaking national initiative, launched by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, aims to alleviate the nation’s nursing shortage by dramatically expanding the pipeline of students in nursing programs.

Modern Healthcare magazine has ranked Kent State University College of Nursing as the third largest nursing school in the United States in terms of enrollment.
