CONFLICT

DESTRUCTIVEINTRACTABLE

CONFLICT is…

THEPRINCIPAL THREAT

TOHUMAN WELFARE

LARGE SCALE

VIOLENCE

IS THE MOSTDESTRUCTIVE

FORCE ON THE PLANET

t

In the 20th Century…

…there were

175,000,000 Conflict Deaths

(Military & civilian casualties, genocide, tyranny, and man-made famine)…

4.5%of World Population.

Since World War IIthere have been…

20,000,000Battle Deaths

in25 International Wars

127 Civil Wars.

What will the 21st Century bring?

Future “perfect storm” conflicts could easily be

more horrific.

Tensions between global power centers are rising.

Society’s high -tech infrastructure is

extremely vulnerable.

Weapons of massdestruction are becoming

widely available.

Low-tech warfare can still produce catastrophic

and even genocidal results.

Destructive conflict

dynamics also…

…prevent us from meeting other critical challenges.

We can’tCONTROL AIDS…

…without dealing with conflicts over

sex, sex education, and religious belief.

We can’t deal with

GLOBAL WARMING…

…without finding ways to overcome

our addiction to fossil fuels and energy industry

resistance.

We can’t fight

POVERTY…

…without addressing the debate over

who is responsible and what can and should

be done?

Unfortunately, our research and

development-oriented society…

…invests almost nothing in the development of

better ways ofhandling conflict.

Instead, we sacrifice millions of lives and

spend countless billions…

…playing the same old destructive game.

We must find realistic ways…

…to change the game.

We need to start by applying what we

know…

...and finding out what we don’t.

Success will require a high degree of specialization…

…with large numbers of individuals and organizations…

…each making important and very

different contributions.

People are very reluctant to change the ways in which they approach conflict.

Success will not come easily, or quickly.

But we will never succeed if we don’t start taking these

challenges seriously.

The challenge of working toward peace is as

important asGlobal Warming.

It deserves the same level of our attention.
