The Valentine’s Luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday February 14, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. As always, the luncheon is free to all who sign up, and yeah, you must sign up so that we have enough food for everyone. Lunch will be provided by ‘One Plus One’ and will include dessert and beverage. We could also use some help in the set up of tables and chairs, as well as clean up after. Some folks have already submitted their new license number, insurance updates, etc. All vehicles parked at Kulana Hale must be owned by the tenant and in drivable condition. Vehicles are not allowed to be stored at Kulana Hale and for heavens sake, please do not attempt to have repairs done or oil changes done in the parking structure. All vehicles parked here without a parking pass will be stickered as a warning and towed after a second offense. As the security advisor, Peter walks the parking lot every evening and has come across some very interesting rule breakers who park here overnight when they shouldn’t, such as Royse. Overnight guests must register with the office and pay a $5 parking fee per night. Monthly parking passes are issued each month for those who pay the monthly fee. It is your responsibility to pick up your passes for your car in a timely fashion. I do not deliver. Cars without a current monthly pass will be cited by the fifth night when Peter does his nightly duties.

Be My Valentine More new folks have joined our community and so now is a good time to get them involved in our first luncheon of the year.

Let’s get some of the newer tenants to volunteer. Parking Stalls and Passes

A gentle reminder to all tenants currently holding parking passes for their car. Please submit updated information. Thank You, George "The Band Played On", also known (by its refrain) as "Casey Would Waltz with a Strawberry Blonde", was a popular song written in 1895 with lyrics by John F. Palmer and music by Charles B. Ward (1865–1917. Unusually, as originally published the verses are in 2/4 time, while the chorus is in 3/4 (waltz) time. The chorus is much better known than the verses to later generations. The lyrics of the refrain: Casey would waltz with a strawberry blonde And the band played on. He'd glide 'cross the floor with the girl he adored And the band played on. But his brain was so loaded it nearly exploded; The poor girl would shake with alarm. He'd ne'er leave the girl with the strawberry curls And the band played on. The song has become a pop standard with many recordings made. One of the first was made by Dan W. Quinn for Berliner Gramophone, the same year the number was first published. Monday Night at The Movies Once again, Kimo Mansfield has provided Kulana Hale with the latest in movie entertainment. Kimo is a SAG member and through the years, have provided Kulana Hale with the latest and freshest movies of the year. Here’s what’s in store for you beginning Monday February 4 and each Monday throughout the month. Black Panther is a 2018 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the eighteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Ryan Coogler, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Robert Cole, and stars Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa aka Black

Panther, alongside Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, , Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker. 'Black Panther' took home the biggest honor of the night at the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards last weekend. Following weeks will premier “Beautiful Boy” with Timothee Chalamet, “BlackKklansman” with John David Washington and “Vice” with Christain Bale. Monday nights never looked so good.

Macho, Macho (Wo)Man

February is “Macho Man of Maintenance” Month. This is the eighth year that we are honoring our men as all of them work so well together in painting, tiling, plumbing, cleaning and fixing broken appliances. Our heartfelt gratitude to the men on our staff. Clayton has been with us for over five years and does on-call special projects for Kulana Hale and no longer taking phone calls for maintenance service. Servicing can only be done if a maintenance form is filled out and scheduled. A security person has been added to help Peter with his rounds. Eddie will walk the parking lot at various undisclosed times of the night as well as monitor the entrance to the building. And let’s not forget Leah. Although she’s a little bit country, she is not “macho” by any stretch of the imagination, she nonetheless take charge when it comes to cleaning, mopping, emptying trash and scolding people who continue to feed the birds. And the new person on our team is Ray Yoshioka. The forever quiet Ray goes through his routine like a well oiled machine. Similar to the energizer bunny, he works non-stop and does not take unnecessary breaks. I’ve never seen him with a cup of coffee in the morning and does not sit idle.

That's FAITH

When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them.

That's TRUST

Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning, but still we set the alarms to wake up.

That's HOPE

We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future. That's CONFIDENCE.

We see the world suffering, but still we get married and have children.

That's LOVE.

On an old man's shirt was written a sentence 'I am not 80 years old; I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience.'

That's ATTITUDE.

WalMart Two guys, one old, one young, are pushing their carts around WalMart when they collide. The old guy says to the young guy, “Sorry about that. I’m looking for my wife, and I guess I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.” The young guy says, “That’s OK, it’s a coincidence. I’m looking for my wife, too… I can’t find her and I’m getting a little desperate.” The old guy says, “Well, maybe I can help you find her. What does she look like?” The young guy says, “Well, she is 27 years old, tall, with red hair, blue eyes, wearing no bra, long legs and is wearing short shorts. What does your wife look like?” To which the old guy says, doesn’t matter, Let’s look for yours.”

The office will be closed on Monday, February 18, 2019 in observance of Presidents Day. See you on Tuesday, the 19th.

Cold and Flu Prevention You might think that cold and flu “season” does not really apply in Hawaii where we are blessed with warm weather year-round. But we are subject to the same threats as anywhere else each year when our weather gets slightly cooler and we get an increase in regular visitors flying in from states and countries that DO have really cold weather and an increase in winter illnesses. As seniors we must be extra careful to take care of ourselves, and each other. Here are some things we should all be doing this season and really, year-round.

1. As soon as you start to feel sick stay home and avoid other people until 24-hrs after your fever or symptoms subside.

2. Wash your hands frequently. Not only

does this help to stop the spread of germs, it will also keep you from picking up germs that may make you even sicker.

3. Cover your nose and mouth when you

sneeze or cough. Or better yet, wear a mask. Bacteria released in a cough or sneeze can travel up to 6 feet away!

4. Refrain from touching your eyes, nose

and mouth as much as possible. These are direct ways that bacteria enter your body.

5. Drink plenty of warm fluids, eat well and

get plenty of rest. A healthy body is your best defense against illness and your best chance of recovering quickly.

6. Get your flu shot. It won’t guarantee that

you won’t get the flu but it does guarantee that there is less of a chance that you will.

Humana and Bingo Miss “K” will be here for another presentation of Medicare 101 and Farmers Market Bingo. The Bingo is for February 7 at 3 p.m. and opened to all. The Medicare 101 is scheduled for 10 a.m. on February 13. After that, she will take vacation for about three weeks or so.

Super Bowl Sunday, February 3, 2019

Super Bowl 53, also known as Super Bowl LIII, is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 3. The kickoff time for Los Angeles Rams vs. New England Patriots is set for 1:30 p.m. on CBS. Robert will set up the big TV in time for you to cheer on your best team. Who is your favorite Quarterback. Jared Goff or Tom Brady? McKinley High School A select group of seniors from McKinley High School are returning every Wednesday to interact with our Kupuna. They share games, arts and crafts and basically interact with Kulana Hale’s elders. They arrive between 3 and 3:30 pm and our seniors provide snacks and drinks for all. The reaction to their weekly visits is very positive. No one should feel alone and it gives folks something to look forward to. Check it out. Out Door Lanai As you know, we promote the use of the outdoor lanai for private celebrations. We provide tables and chairs and simple rules for clean up. But apparently, some folks do not understand the word, private. When a tenant request the use of the outdoor lanai for a private celebration, it’s usually with their selected family members and friends. Notices are posted days in advance to alert you and to ask you to respect your neighbors. The last time the lanai was reserved, three tenants walked right in and helped themselves to a plate of food. That to me is just plain rude! The outdoor lanai is once again reserved for a private celebration. You don’t need to know who it’s for. You just need to be respectful and don’t be a party crasher.
