The Origin of System Theory

• At an Annual Conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS) in 1954, the founders of the Association including Ludwig Von Bertalanffy (Biologist), Kenneth Boulding (Economist), Anatol Rappoport (Mathematician) and Ralph Gerard (Physicist) developed the ways to describe the methods of inquiry in each discipline that were used for understanding the phenomena in the field, which became called the ‘System’.

• The word ‘System’ was used in many disciplines, in different aspects, different contexts and different connotations, but shared the same characteristics.

• Therefore the General System Theory, is a conceptual model that theoretically constructs to describe general relationships in the real world, as derived from several disciplines. When refers to the ‘system’ in any discipline, it describes an object or a thing or a phenomena which the following characteristics:

Interrelationship, Holism, Goal Seeking, Inputs and Outputs Transformation,

Controllers, Equi-finality

Definition of ‘System’ • The term ‘system’ is derived from the Greek word ‘systema,’ which means ‘whole compounded of several parts.’ • The word ‘system’ can be described as a set of objects together with relationships between the objects and between their attributes. (Laslo & Kripper, 1988) • A ‘system’ is a set of interelated parts, working independenly and jointly, in pursuit of common objectives of the whole , within a complex environment (Shrode & Voich Jr, 1974)

Basic Properties of ‘System’

• Purposive behavior - the purpose of system is to create value by combining and utilizing resources in some particular manner. • Wholism - the whole is greater than the sum of its parts

• Openness - all real systems are acted upon by their environments

• Transformation - a system creates value by utilizing and converting or transforming resources (inputs) into outputs to accomplish its purposes. The transformation process of a system is often depicted utilizing the framework of input-output model. The black-box concept is always used for a system-modeling approach.

• Interrelatedness - refers to the internal interactions and interdependencies of the various parts of a system and the system’s interactions with its environments. See Shrode & Voich Jr. (1974)

Basic Properties of ‘System’

• Control mechanism - a system must be self-regulating as it proceeds through its cycle life to enable them to sustain themselves. Maintaing this state of balance requires the system to evaluate changing conditions and adjust to them through the processes of feedback and adaptation, utilizing some type of control mechanism.

• The basic properties of system are cyclically reconsidered through time or through the life cycle of the system (see p.132)

Organization as an input-output system

The organizational system is a set of interrelated input-output transformation processes, working independently and jointly in pursuit of common objectives and value criteria for the total organization, its members, and its environment. An organization’s functional segments, which are traditionally treated as vertical structures, are viewed in a systems context as a series of input-output processes and flows cutting horizontally across functional entities.

1) การวเคราะหระบบ (System analysis) คอ การกาหนดเปาหมาย (Goal) หรอความตองการ (Requirements) และตดสนวาอะไรเปนเรองทตองทาใหสาเรจ เพอบรรลจดหมายทกาหนดไวอยางสมฤทธผล

2) การออกแบบระบบ (System design) คอการกาหนดขอเสนอหรอโครงราง ซงสรางขนเพอใหเกดความกระจางในจดหมายทกาหนดไว และจะทาใหบรรลผลอยางไร โดยการใชทางเลอกทมประสทธภาพมากทสด

3) การบรหารระบบ (System management) เปนการปฏบตการในระบบ เพอใหมความถกตองแนนอน และสามารถวดไดกบเกณฑทเปนมาตรฐาน
