APOSTROPHES
• Apostrophes can be used to show possession in two ways.
*To show something belongs to a SINGLE owner.*To show that something/things belongs to a GROUP of owners.
We’ll start with SINGLE owners…
• Zak s book was on the shelf.• Sarah s pencil case was full of
equipment.• Matthew s planner was missing.• Tony s work was excellent.• Lily s pen had stopped working.

What do you notice about where all the apostrophes are when it is a SINGLE person or
object that owns an item.
TWO OR MORE OWNERS
• When you are writing about more than one person owning something, your apostrophe should be used like this.
The students books were piled neatly on the shelf.
