Happy New Year! We welcome all our pupils, parents and partners to our holding site at Ang Mo Kio Street 23, a new environment where we will engage our pupils in learning. We are excited about the opportunity to stimulate thinking and creativity through this new environment and help our pupils learn the lifelong skill of adaptability and resilience. This year, we have a total of 8 Primary 1 classes with full enrolment. Let me extend a warm welcome to parents whose child is in P1 this year. Thank you for your trust and confidence in choosing Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School (KCPPS). My teachers and I look forward to working closely with you to help your child adapt to primary school life. At the 2012 PSLE, our teachers and pupils did us proud by giving their best. 100% of our pupils qualified for a place in secondary school. Our percentage passes for all subjects were above national average, except for Tamil Language. We want to thank our staff for motivating and teaching our pupils well and our parents for working closely with us in this partnership of educating our pupils. Moving Forward to 2013 As we bid farewell to 2012 and embrace 2013, we are thankful for God’s provision of our holding site. We want to see the period we are away from our home ground in Bishan as a new season for both our staff and pupils to flourish in spite of the challenges. We look to your support as we give our best and role model for our pupils the importance and power of thinking and being positive. To mark this new season, our Aesthetics Department has created a mural in the school displaying some of our pupils’ artwork: For the benefit of parents who are new to KCPPS, here are the school’s vision, mission and core values: Vision – Ever learning, Ever glowing, Ever abiding by the Truth of God Mission – To build a community of learners with Christian values and lifelong learning skills to face future challenges Core Values – Professionalism, Teamwork, Care, Integrity and Trust

Your child should recuperate at home during the period of medical leave until he or she is well to attend school. A medical certificate has to be submitted to the form teacher upon your child’s return to school. Students’ Accident Protection Scheme 2013 As part of our Pastoral Care Programme, the school has taken up an insurance policy to insure your child/ward against accidents. SG3: Excellence in Teaching and Learning To continue to cater to the needs of our pupils for better academic results, we have put in place a comprehensive school curriculum for them. For the morning session, lessons will be conducted from 7.30 am to 1.30 pm every day, with the curriculum hours extended to 4.00 pm for all pupils on Mondays. For the afternoon session, lessons will be conducted from 12.30 pm to 6.30 pm every day. Kindly refer to the attached KCPPS School Schedule 2013 (morning and afternoon session). Please be informed that Supplementary / Remedial lessons for P3 – P6 will be held on Thursdays after school. These lessons will commence on Thu 17 Jan 2013. Further details will be provided. While Supplementary lessons are for the whole class, only selected pupils will need to attend Remedial lessons and the respective class teachers will inform you. Kindly check the weight of your child’s school bag to ensure he or she does not carry too much load. A list of books to bring over the first three days of school has been provided during the Orientation Day held on 27 Dec 2012. Your child could refer to the class timetable to pack his or her school bag. He or she should have a complete set of stationery to start the new academic year. A school diary will be provided for them when school reopens.

SG4: Quality Co-curriculum Experience Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) is an integral part of our school’s programme to promote holistic development and bring out the best in every child. Through CCA, we aim to build our pupils’ character and develop their talents in areas other than the academic. Our pupils will learn essential life skills such as leadership, teamwork, problem-solving and conflict management. CCAs will also inculcate a sense of discipline in them to help them deal more effectively with challenges in life they face in the future. Our CCA programme will be held every Monday (2 to 4pm) this year and active participation by our P3 to P6 pupils is expected. CCA will commence on Mon 28 Jan 2013. To provide an idea of the CCAs offered, PE/CCA department will provide more details later to help you make informed choices for your child. Our Programme for Active Learning (PAL) for P1 and P2 pupils will be held during curriculum time. PAL offers a broad-based exposure to identify pupils’ talents and serves as an early introduction to CCA. More details will be provided in our future correspondence with the respective groups of parents. In line with MOE’s call for schools to put in place Strategies To Ensure More Attention To Individual Pupils (SEAIP), a Form Teacher Guidance Period (FTGP) has been built into curriculum time to facilitate closer teacher-pupil interaction. As KCPPS is a Christian mission school, our pupils attend weekly 30-minute Chapel service during school hours. Our Muslim pupils will be exempted from attending Chapel unless there is a written request to attend. For non-Muslim pupils who wish to be exempted from attending Chapel, please seek permission from the Principal in writing for exemption.

Partnership Matters School Management Committee (SMC) The school thanks our SMC Chairman, Elder Philip Khoo Teng Hock, for his dedicated service to the Lord and the school for the past fourteen years. Elder Dr Ho Yew Kee takes over the baton of leadership as SMC Chairman with effect from 1 Jan 2013. Elder Dr Ho is currently the Associate Professor of Accounting at NUS. Two new members joining the SMC are Elder Lisa Theng, a managing partner of a law firm, and Adrin Munoz, a preacher at Adam Road Presbyterian Church. We look forward to working closely with the SMC to serve the needs of the school as we embark on the PERI upgrading project at our Bishan site.

Dedicated Mondays with Parents To foster closer school-parent partnership, the school has set aside Mondays to attend to parents. As concerns for each year level are different, these sessions are organized according to year level to gather level-specific feedback. Breakfast with Parents will be held on the last Monday of every month from 7.30 – 8.30 am for parents whose child is in P3 – P6. Tea with Parents will be held also on the last Monday of every month from 5.00 – 6.00 pm for parents whose child is in P1 – P2. A registration form will be sent to you through your child to inform you. Your child should drop the completed registration form in the School Family Education (SFE) Box in the General Office at least 2 weeks before the event. Our SFE Coordinator, Christina Ong, will then contact you to confirm the meeting. Venue will be determined by the number of registrants. Our first Breakfast with Parents will be held on Mon 25 Feb 2013 for parents of our P6 pupils. We have also set aside Mondays 2.30 to 4.30 pm for parents to meet the Principal on a one-to-one basis. Each appointment will be a 30-minute slot. Please call the school one week in advance to schedule an appointment. To ensure we are able to address your concerns at the time of meeting, we would appreciate if you could provide brief details on the meeting purpose at the time of appointment. In the event that your appointment clashes with an MOE meeting, we seek your understanding that it will be re-scheduled at least one day in advance. We look forward to meeting you to discuss the needs of your child. Instead of face-to-face interaction, you could also email the school [email protected] to give your feedback or concerns. Recruitment for Parent Support Volunteers Group (PSVG) In view of the various programmes designed for our pupils, we look forward to stronger support from parents. You could play a more active role in supporting one another and contributing to your child’s education in school. For parents who would like to join the PSVG, kindly contact our PSVG Chairperson, Jerene Chew, at this email address: [email protected]. Purchase of School Yearbook Since 2009, the school has printed a commemorative yearbook for our pupils in our effort to forge greater school pride and affiliation. This year, we have specially designed the yearbook to capture the precious moments of school life as seen from the perspectives of our children. This issue is meant to capture some of our nostalgic moments and treasured memories before we depart for the holding school. We believe that this will be meaningful to parents and pupils alike. For them, this yearbook will prove to be a precious memento for the time they have spent in KCPPS. As you are aware, the school is undergoing upgrading to allow for operation as a single session. Under the upgrading, additional facilities such as redesigned classrooms, Indoor Sports Hall, band room, dance studio and outdoor running track will be provided. These new facilities will encourage greater interaction and self-discovery, and facilitate experiential and hands-on learning. The yearbook is sold at $15 per copy to defray the cost of production as well as to raise about $3,000 towards the upgrading project at our Bishan campus. Your child can make payment for the yearbook to his/her form teacher latest by Mon 14 Jan 2013. Thank you so much for your support. We look forward to your support in providing a holistic education for our pupils and let me take this opportunity to wish all of you a joyful, enriching and successful 2013! Yours sincerely Mdm Teo Ching Ling Principal
