End of year Reports:

Chairmans Report 2014 - 2015 It has been another great season at KBLAC and I have enjoyed my experience as chairperson of this great club. We were lucky enough to only have to cancel two competition nights with one due to excessive heat and the other with heavy rain and thunderstorms. Our athlete numbers were slightly down for the season 2014-2015 however our committee will try and market the local public schools to increase our sign on registrations for the following season. The representative season started with the Zone Championships at Glenbrook and with a week of torrential rain leading up to the carnival it looked like it was going to be delayed at the final hurdle, however it went ahead and was a great weekend where all our athletes performed outstandingly and the Glenbrook Little Athletics club should be commended for hosting a great carnival. The Western Ranges Regional Championships held at Parkes made for a very enjoyable weekend with the top performers of the weekend being Aiden Miller with four gold medals, and Brooke Keller and Caitlyn Ferrier with a swag of medals. The way all the athletes conducted themselves on and off the track was a credit to them. All their parents and grandparents should be congratulated for getting them out to Parkes and more importantly showing them “The Dish”. State championships were held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre at Homebush and the club was well represented with 39 athletes competing. The best performers were Brooke Keller with two gold medals (Long Jump and Triple Jump), Lianna Davidson one gold medal (and State Record – Javelin), Toby Camilleri one gold medal (Discus), Tully Murphy silver medal (triple jump), Caitlyn Ferrier a silver medal in the 400mtr and Caleb Fairweather a bronze medal in the 80 metre hurdles. Big congratulations to all that performed, many coming away with personal bests. I personally would like to thank club coach Marilyn Pearson and her helpers Laurie Fairweather, Milton James and Suzy Murphy for all their tireless effort in training the athletes to better themselves. A big thank you to Belinda James and Val Cheyne for their efforts in the canteen and all those parents who have assisted in the canteen and on the barbecue. To all the Senior athletes, thank you for your assistance in running the Tiny tots program and helping to develop our future champions. Club captains Tahlia Blanch and Johnathon Blunden also a big thank you, your leadership to the younger members of the club has been outstanding. To each and every one of the age managers and parent helpers thank you, without your efforts Friday night competition would not be possible.

To all fellow committee members thank you for your tireless efforts throughout the season, it is greatly appreciated. A special mention to Susan Ferrier, I applaud you for all that you do behind the scenes to enable this club to function the way it does. Darron Blanch Chairperson

Secretary’s Report

The 2014-2015 season was my first in the role of Secretary, and we have had a very busy but successful season. I applaud my fellow Committee members - their hard work and willingness to take on extra roles, as well as running our competition nights makes it a pleasure to work together. The extra effort needed to organise our athletes and their families to travel to our Zone and Region Championships shows with our excellent Team Spirit and athlete performances. Many of our Committee members are also Officials, I think that shows their commitment to the Sport. Our Meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of each month at McMahons Park Hall and were well attended throughout the season. Our Presentation Night was a great celebration of all our athlete’s hard work and success, I am looking forward to the 2015/16 Season. Suzy Murphy Secretary

Treasurer’s Report Kurrajong Bilpin Little Athletics continues to operate with a positive balance sheet. We continue to operate with a significant Term deposit investment and have ended the season with funds in both our general operating and canteen accounts. We were successful in acquiring a $500.00 Innovation and Technology Award from the Annual Conference this year provided by IMG Sports Technology Group. Our Athlete Registrations were strong enough to provide sufficient operating capital for the season coupled with excellent financial management and responsibility for the clubs funds the year ended with surplus funds for start up of the 2015/2016 season while continuing to support and provide an amazing athletic experience to all our Athletes. Last year KBLAC hosted the State Cross Country and Road Walks and although the funds raised from this were not as significant as we anticipated we have learnt a lot as a club to hopefully make this event more of a successful revenue raiser for us next year.

Page 5: Kurrajong-Bilpin Little Athletics Centre Annual Report ... · Darron Blanch Chairperson Secretary’s Report The 2014-2015 season was my first in the role of Secretary, and we have

As in most years our Canteen was a revenue raiser for the club providing a great service on Friday nights and additional funds for the Club. This year, just as in others, takings varied in the canteen because of weather and holiday periods and its effect on Friday night attendance. This year we were able to purchase a new set of High Jump Mats for all the athletes to enjoy on club nights making High Jumps safer and fun to compete in for all the athletes. We have also purchased some varied other sporting equipment to add to and replace our existing stocks. Kurrajong Bilpin Little Athletics Centre is in a strong position leading into 2015/2016 season. Coach’s Report

Another great season for athletes from our Club with some wonderful results right across the age groups in many different events. There is a wealth of talent in this Centre that will be very exciting to guide & watch develop over the next few years. A very special thankyou to all the athletes who regularly attended training during the season. Your enthusiasm and dedication are so inspiring. You are a great delight to work with! You always make me so proud to be part of our great Club. A huge thank you also to our wonderful Club Captains this season - Tahlia Blanch and Jonathan Blunden. You have been there all season constantly supporting and encouraging all our young athletes and your wonderful sportsmanship has been a great example for them to emulate. Congratulations to all of our State Athletes and many thanks for the exciting weekend of competition you provided. A special congratulations to medal winners Brooke Keller, Lianna Davidson, Caitlyn Ferrier, Caleb Fairweather, Tully Murphy and Toby Camilleri. A special thankyou to all the parents who supported these athletes so enthusiastically over the whole two days of competition. I know it was much appreciated. Congratulations also to all our prize winners, particularly Brooke, Lianna, Caitlyn and Tully. Their outstanding results speak for themselves. KB athletes have been outstanding throughout the season competing at several State and National Championships. Caitlyn Ferrier and Shayne Campbell were our most successful athletes winning their very first Australian Junior medals. Both won Bronze in their respective events. Tully Murphy also deserves a special mention after jumping a 70cm PB in his Triple jump to place an excellent 6th. Renee Hardy also had a top 8 finish with a PB competing up an age group in her 3000m walk. Our ex KB athletes also had another busy and successful season with Ian Dewhurst representing Australia at his first Commonwealth Games in the 400m hurdles and placing an excellent 12th overall (3rd in his heat and needing 2nd place to make final). Sara Klein and Jack Bangel were invited to compete in all of the High Performance Track Classics with Sara placing in all 3 of her hurdle comps. Jack placed 3rd in Adelaide. At the Australian Open Championships both Sara and her twin Kirsty were amongst the medals with Silver in 400m hurdles and 10,000m walk respectively. Jo Dawson and Jack Bangel also represented NSW at this event. Our off season winter training commences on Monday 4th May and our first major Little A’s competition will be the State Little A’s Cross Country and Road Walks being hosted by us in July at Scheyville. Again my heartfelt thanks to all who continue to assist at training regularly especially Laurie Fairweather, Suzy Murphy and Milton James. We have also been extremely lucky to have had some very hard-working and conscientious Committee members this season, which always leads to a happy and successful Club. Marilyn Pearson Centre Coach

Computer Operator’s Report

It’s hard to believe another athletics season has come and gone already, but what a successful season it has been. As the Computer Operator, it’s been wonderful to see our athletes improving from week to week and achieving PB’s and records. We continue to use the Results HQ system which gives our athletes instant online access to their results as soon as they are entered, and allows them to review their results for the whole season and monitor their progress. A huge thank you must go to all of the hardworking members of our committee who have worked tirelessly to make the season the success that it was. Special thanks to our fantastic coach Maz who devotes endless hours to developing training sessions and programs for our diverse group of talented athletes, and plays a huge part in their successes. We are indebted to Maz for all that she does for our athletes, and also to Laurie who is always there to put the kids through their paces at training - rain, hail or shine. Thanks also to Darron Blanch and Suzy Murphy who have both done an exceptional job in their first year as Chairman and Secretary respectively, and have lead a fantastic team who have been a pleasure to work with. I’d like to also say a big thank you to all of the parents who have helped out throughout the season in any capacity. Without the parents our Friday nights would not run, so thank you to those who do their bit, whether it be helping at their child’s age group with measuring, raking, recording, etc, assisting at the BBQ or canteen, working on the start line, finish line or recording desk, or filling an Age Manager role. Your contributions are all valued and we could not operate without you. It was also great to see so many people step up to do multiple timeslots to cover our huge volunteer workload at the Zone Carnival, in addition to Regional and State, and it is this team spirit which makes our club so great.

It has been a pleasure to serve on the committee once again, and I am looking forward to another enjoyable and successful season in 2015-16. Susan Ferrier Computer Operator

Groundsman’s Report

Maintaining and marking of the grounds started in August 2014 and carried on through till the end of the season. The main circular track was marked to the usual 300m inside lane with 2 x 50m straights and 2 x 180⁰ bends of various radiuses. This track included 8 racing lanes. The circular track was marked with the standard 200m & 400m starts, as well as various 200m hurdle and pack start marks. The sprint track was marked to the standard 100m length with the addition of 6 lanes to make 14. The extra lanes allowed us to continue running races while the hurdle heights were being adjusted therefore speeding up the night. In addition there were line marks for the 50m, 70m, 100m & various sprint hurdle distances. The 2 Javelin fields were marked along with the 4 Shot Put & 2 Discus fields. The 5 jumping pits were maintained throughout the season. The main triple jump pit had its lines repainted; the 4 long jump pits were re-marked prior to the start of the season. The ground held up pretty well during the season considering the amount of wet weather we had throughout the summer. I would like to thank all Committee members, Age managers, and competition night helpers for their tireless & thankless hard work throughout the season. To our wonderful & dedicated club coach Marilyn, thanks for putting your time & knowledge into coaching our fantastic and talented children. To Darron our club Chairman, thanks for the time & dedication you put into our club over the past season, it was great being part of the team. Last but no way least, thanks to all the kids. Without you & your determination, we wouldn’t have a great and competitive athletics club. Go KBLAC Laurie Fairweather Groundsman

Uniform Report Uniform sales went smoothly this season and I was able to enjoy most of it on the finish line timekeeping. The kids look great in their red and green uniforms when competing. As we entered Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre for the State Championships in March a ticket collector commented on Julia's jacket, saying she'd seen a lot from our club - it must be a big club. It was great to think that our kids must be happy in their jackets to all be wearing them. Well done to all the KBLAC kids for their great work and commitment to improving on their personal best performances. Thank you to everyone who contributes to a positive Athletics Club for our kids. Spreadsheets detailing uniform items sold and state gear distributed this season have been submitted. Thank you. Kellie Black Uniform Coordinator

Western Ranges Zone Championships, Glenbrook Oval, Sat 13th-Sun 14th December 2014 Kurrajong-Bilpin athletes travelled to Glenbrook for the Little Athletics Western Ranges Zone Championships on the 13-14th December, for the chance to earn a spot at the Regional Championships to be held at Parkes in February. Here they pitted their skills against other competitors in the Zone which extends from the Blue Mountains area to Lithgow, Mudgee & Oberon. Kurrajong-Bilpin was represented by 83 athletes across the weekend, and of the 77 who were old enough to progress to Regional, a very impressive 75 athletes qualified to do so. Of these, 51 athletes qualified for Regional in 4 or more events, in what was a dominant display from the club. The Under 7 athletes who are not yet old enough to compete at Regional put in some outstanding performances nonetheless, and the 6 Kurrajong Bilpin athletes in attendance came home with 11 medals and 1 new Zone record, and scooped all 3 medals in the Girls Discus event. Outstanding athlete of the carnival would have to go to Brooke Keller, who not only convincingly won all 4 of her events, but also set new Zone records in 3 of them. Others who dominated their age groups included Aiden Miller in the U9 Boys who won all of his 4 events, and Caitlyn Ferrier and Kiara Ison in the U13 Girls who both came away with 4 event wins and 2 second-place finishes, with Caitlyn also setting a new Zone record. Others to win 3 events included Shayli-Rose MacPherson, Spencer Blanch, Riley Howarth, Julia Black, Natalie Chapman, Gabe Radford and Lauren Russell. Despite the wet weather leading into the weekend, the grounds held up very well and Kurrajong Bilpin set an astounding 8 new Zone records at the carnival. Record breakers included Doug Peters in the U7 Boys Discus (19.40m), Brooke Keller in the U11 Girls 60m Hurdles (10.22), U11 Girls Long Jump (4.58m) and U11 Girls Triple Jump (9.96m), Georgia Portelli in the U11 Girls Discus (30.55m), Lianna Davidson in the U12 Girls Javelin (28.18m), Caitlyn Ferrier in the U13 Girls 200m Hurdles (30.86) and Shayne Campbell in the U17 Boys Javelin (49.29m). Not only were there outstanding individual performances across the weekend, but Kurrajong Bilpin were also dominant in the relays. Both the Junior Girls and Senior Girls Relay teams won the coveted Zone Relay Champions engraved baton, while the Junior Boys were just pipped at the post to come a very close second. The Senior Boys also finished in second after a spirited last-leg run from Brad Richardson that had the whole club on its feet. All athletes participated in all 6 events for their age group, with points accrued across the day. As the weather warmed up so did the performances, with our athletes achieving numerous season bests and personal bests, including significant Long Jump PB’s by Renee, Caitlyn and Michael to put them in good standing in their age groups. With trophies awarded to the first 3 finishers in each age group, and medals also awarded to the next 3 places for age groups of more than 20 athletes, our KBLAC athletes put in some great performances to get 4 of our athletes up on the podium. Michael finished in 2nd place, and Caitlyn and Katelin finished in 3rd, both girls missing out on 2nd place by the narrowest of margins. With 24 athletes in the U12 girls, medals were also given to the next 3 finishers, which saw Renee also finish on the podium after some great performances. All of our KBLAC athletes represented the club well and were especially impressive in their 800m races which were held at the conclusion of the day when the temperature had reached its peak. NSW All Schools Championships, 9th – 12th October, Homebush Some excellent results for KB Training Squad athletes at NSW All Schools over the last 4 days with 3 medal winning performances, 12 final 8 performances and 6 personal best performances. Most successful athlete was Phoebe Young securing a Silver medal competing up an age group in the 13 girls Triple jump with a huge PB in the final round and booking her flight to Adelaide along the way for her very first National Championships. She backed up extremely well the following day winning her first State title with Gold in the 12 girls Long jump with another PB performance. Training partner Tully Murphy was also outstanding with a huge jump in the final round of the 13 boys Triple jump to secure a Bronze medal. A short time later he qualified for the 90m hurdles final with a substantial PB. He managed to lower his PB again in the final despite clipping the last hurdle, finishing in a very creditable 6th place. Some great PB’s also from promising young jumpers Lachlan Brian (High J) and Alexandra Williams (Triple J). A good effort from Lauren Russell placing 5th in her High Jump just missing the Bronze medal winning height of 1.60m when her legs clipped the bar on the way over. Distance athletes Sianna Steele, Jack Hamblin and Kienan Brown were all impressive making finals in their 800ms. A determined effort from Luke Zaurrini in his 400m heat was also a significant personal best. Individual results: Phoebe Young 12G Long J 1ST 4.80m (PB), Triple J 2ND 10.08m (PB) Renee Taylor 12G Long J 9th 4.18m, 13G Triple J 14th 8.85m Kienan Brown 12B 800m Final 5th 2.33.75 Jess Keller 13G Triple J 8th 9.63m Julia King 13G 800m heat 8th 2.47.20 Tully Murphy 13B Triple J 3RD 11.53m (PB), 90m H Final 6th 13.80 (PB) Jack Hamblin 13B 800m Final 8th 2.23.71, 1500m Lochlan Brian 13B High J 8th 1.55m (PB) Sianna Steele 14G 800m Final 7th 2.23.67 Brooke Ferguson 15G 3000m W 6th 18.40.19 Alexandra Williams 15G Triple J 8th 10.24m (PB), High J 10th 1.45m, Long J 19th 4.26m Luke Zaurrini 15B 400m heat 8th 55.08 (PB), 800m heat 8th 2.15.27 Lauren Russell 17G High J 5th 1.55m, Long J 9th

NSW PSSA State Championships, 15th & 16th October, Homebush Well done to all the awesome KBLAC athletes that participated in the NSW State PSSA Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park on Wed 15th and Thu 16th October, despite the less than ideal weather conditions on Wednesday. Good luck to Kiara Ison and Caitlyn Ferrier who will both represent NSW in the 200m at the School Sport Nationals in Tasmania in late November! ANSW State Relay Championships, Saturday 15th – Sunday 16th November, 2014 Numerous KBLAC athletes competed for both Asics West and Mounties Seniors Clubs at the recent ANSW State Relay Championships. Full results will be provided in the next newsletter, but there were some fantastic performances, impressive PB’s and quite a few medals just to top it off! Well done to all who competed over the 2-day carnival. School Sport Australia National Championships Caitlyn Ferrier and Kiara Ison travelled to Penguin in Tasmania from 27th November – 1st December to represent NSW at the School Sport Australia National Track and Field Championships. We’d like to congratulate both girls for their fantastic efforts in getting to Nationals, and for their great results at the meet. Kiara had some fantastic runs in both the heats and semi-finals of the 100m to just sneak in to the final with a huge PB, where she finished 8th. Caitlyn narrowly missed the final of the 200m (by 0.1 of a second!) but took comfort in knowing her PB would have seen her into the final and a 5th place finish. In addition to both finishing in the top 10 in the country at their chosen event, both girls came away with a National relay medal, taking bronze with their respective teams, while they also both received a 2nd place pennant for their relays on the final ‘fun’ day of competition. Great effort by both girls!

Briggs Classic and Hunter Track Classic Congratulations to Kurrajong Training Squad members and ex-KBLAC athletes Sara Klein and Jack Bangel, who recently participated in the Briggs Athletics Classic in Tasmania. This is one of a series of elite invitational track meets run during the summer, and was held on the Australia Day long weekend. Both Sara and Jack competed in the 400m Hurdles event, with Sara finishing 2nd in a time of 59.74, while Jack finished 6th in 54.74. Sara has since competed at the Hunter Track Classic in Newcastle on 31st January, where she ran a very impressive PB of 55.16 in the Women’s 400m A Race to finish 5th. Well done to both Sara & Jack on their great results!

NSW Youth and Junior Championships The Squad was well represented once again at the NSW Youth and Junior Championships held at Homebush from the 6th to 8th February. Medal winners from this championship and medal winners from the NSW All Schools held last October are eligible to compete at the Australian Youth and Junior Championships to be held in Sydney in March. Individual National qualifying performances were also eligible. Six Squad athletes have now met the criteria for the NSW Team. They are Caitlyn Ferrier (200m & 400m), Renee Hardy (3000m W), Phoebe Young (Long & Triple J), Matilda Ryan (800m), Tully Murphy (Triple J), and Hayden Perry (High & Jav). Most outstanding athletes from this meet were Renee Hardy who got the championships off to a brilliant start with her gutsy Silver medal performance competing up an age group in the 3000m walk. Caitlyn Ferrier was another star performer slashing a massive 4 seconds from her 400m personal best between her heat and final where she ran a blinder of a race to just miss the Gold medal on the line. Promising young horizontal jumper Phoebe Young put in another massive effort to score well deserved bronze medals in both her long and triple jumps. High jumper Hayden Perry was also once again amongst the medals with Silver in high jump and bronze in javelin. Tully Murphy also had a great comp placing just outside the medals in his triple jump. Our other star performer was the ever improving Matilda Ryan who ran a massive PB & national qualifier in her 800m heat to qualify for the finals with the third fastest time but unfortunately had a bad fall before the final. After a visit to first aid Matilda made the start line but was in too much discomfort to be able to reproduce her previous fine performance. Individual results: Caitlyn Ferrier U14G 400m Final SILVER medal 60.48 (PB & National qualifier), U14G 200m Final 4th 26.76 (PB & National qualifier)

Perth Track Classic Sara Klein competed in the Perth Track Classic (Jandokot City Classic) on Saturday 14th February, finishing 2nd once again to Olympian Lauren Wells (formerly Lauren Boden). Conditions were quite windy so the times overall weren’t as fast, but Sara finished for the first time within 2 seconds of Lauren and was very pleased with her run. Lauren ran 57.60 and Sara finished in 59.12.

Adelaide Track Classic Jack Bangel was invited to compete in the Adelaide Track Classic on the 21st February placing an excellent 3rd in a 54.30. Kirsty Klein competed the following day in the Australian & Oceania Open 20km Race Walking Championships, finishing 7th in the Oceania Titles and 6th Australian with a personal best over the distance of 1 hour 41mins. This event was held in 40 degree temperature which made the competition also a trial of endurance.

NSW Open Championships, Feb 27 - March 1, 2015. Some great results from the Kurrajong Training Squad at the State Open Championships held at Homebush this weekend. Most outstanding athlete was Sara Klein taking out the Open Womens 400m hurdles for the second successive year just outside her personal best in a fast time of 58.56s. Not to be outdone twin sister Kirsty also amongst the medals with a well deserved Silver in the 5000m walk in an excellent time of 23.51.77. Junior athlete Daniel Keene also had a very successful competition pushing his way into his very first Open Mens 800m final with a personal best time, then slashing his PB once again to run 1.55.45 for 8th place. Jack Bangel was a finalist in the Mens 400m hurdles placing 9th.
