    Bali is Indonesia's biggestbeer consumer

    A c c o r d i n g t oresearch done by PT.M u l t i B i n t a n gI n d o n e s i a , b e e rconsumption hasnow hit 100 millionlitres per year inIndonesia.

St i l l neg l ig ib lecompared to European

countries, it is still among the most popular beverages consumedhere.

Bali's consumption is now the highest in Indonesia, with thelocal beer manufacturer indicating that the large numbers oftourists to Bali have helped to boost the figures.

I do not have exact data but Bali is Indonesia's biggest beermarket, said Toni Darusma marketing Director of Bintang.

Out drinking even big cities like Jakarta in the beer stakes,he was quick to point out that the Balinese themselves are notdrunks, more likely it is the number of foreigners from all parts ofthe world that are spiking the consumption figures he explained.

According to thepress report, many of

the beggars from Munti Gununghave purposely selected to workthe streets of Bali, asking touristvisitors for handouts. Sukadanasaid that begging has become aculture and a career choice forthese individuals, fueled by theknowledge they can make moremoney begging than working anormal job.

formulating beggar laws while,at the same time, pushingregencies and municipalities toalso draft their own tough anti-begg ing regu la t ions w i thpenalties of three months inprison for being caught beggingon the streets. www.balidiscovery.com

Kompas.com reports thatthe provincial government of Baliadmits it is being overwhelmed in

trying to deal with the increasingnumber of beggars dotting theroadsides of the Island.

While officials repeatedlyround up, apprehend and escortbeggars back to their homevillages, a short time later thesame street beggars reappear inBali's capital city panhandlingfrom residents and visitingtourists alike.

Pope has not cancelled ChristmasAnd so it came to pass that in theeighth year of Pope Benedict'sreign, some tabloid and socialmedia decreed that he hadcancelled Christmas.

The day after Benedict'slatest book "The Infancy NarrativesJesus of Nazareth" was published

on November 20, Vatican officialsfound some headlines they werenot expecting.

    "K i l l j oy pope c rushesChristmas nativity traditions," readone tabloid headline, claiming thatBenedict had snubbed traditionss u c h a sa n i m a l s i nnativity scenesand carolling.

    " P o p esets out tod e b u n kC h r i s t m a smyths , " rananother.

    H o l yS c r o o g e !Some blogsunceremoniously brandedBenedict thenew Gr i nc ht h a t s t o l eChristmas andone rocketed him to the "top of thegrumpy list for 2012."

And then there was thiszinger headline from a web newssite: "Pope bans Christmas".

Coming little more than amonth before Christmas, it was thelast thing the Vatican neededanother image problem for the

pope. It was headlined: "The popehas not banned Christmas".

So what was all the fussabout?

In the 137-page book, thepope states a fact that in thegospels there is "no reference" tothe presence of animals in thestable actually, it was probably acave where Jesus was born.

Bloggers had a feast withthat, with one calling it "Bombshell

    number one".What some neglected was

that just a few sentences down, thepope states that even today, "Norepresentation of the crib iscomplete without the ox and theass".

    He explains, The tradition of

the ass and ox came from reflectingon parts of the Old and NewTestaments. Christian iconographythen adopted the motif early inChurch history to show that evenanimals knew Jesus was the son ofGod.

KEEP ON CAROLLINGIn other words, the tradition

that has developed over thecenturies matters more than anunverifiable fact, at least as far asthe case of the ox and ass in thestable is concerned.

"I think that what people needto realize here is that the pope is

trying to be as historical as he canbe," said Father Robert Dodaro, professor of patristics, or the studyof early Church writings, at Rome'sPatristic Institute.

"He wants to see the biblicalnarratives as history where possiblebut he is also trying to explaindetails in the narratives that cannotbe historically verified," he said.

Some bloggers, taking theircue from television and websiteheadlines, even wrote that the pope

    had spoken out againstChristmas carols.

In the book, the opposite wastrue.

Benedict says the evangelistLuke wrote that at the moment ofJesus' birth the angels "said" thewell known phrase "Glory to God in

the highest, and on earth peaceamong men with whom he ispleased".

But in the next line he explainsthat "Christianity has alwaysunderstood that the speech ofangels is actually song", that "the

angels' song of praisehas never gonesilent", and that it is"only natural thats imple be l ievers(even today) join intheir carolling on theHoly Night".

So, no need tocancel any schoolperformances.

A n o t h e rsection of the bookthat i rked somebloggers is where thepope restates whatbiblical scholars haveknown for decades, ifnot centuries that

Jesus was born several yearsearlier than the first century AD.

Benedict writes that sinceKing Herod died in 4 BC, Jesus wasprobably born "a few years earlier".He attributes the erroneous fixing ofthe year of Jesus' birth to amiscalculation by the monkDionysius Exiguous some 500

years later."No one's faith should beshaken by this book," said Dodaro."On the contrary, it should befortified by this account. This is abelievable account of the birth ofChrist," he said.

And in St Peter's Square, workmen have started building theVatican's larger than life nativityscene, which is expected to haveanimals and singing angels.

Gday again folks and welcome to the latest. This week has been a busyone with probably the biggest event of the year being the grand openingof the Kuta Town Houses stage three apartments. What a great outcomethe lads have achieved with their development being almost completeprior to Christmas. If I was a betting man I probably win a few quid bygambling that the project wouldn't be complete by then, but, time willtell I guess. I remember standing in a footing hole about 18 months ago

which was 30 feet deep and thinking to myself there is no way this willbe complete in that time frame and here we are such a short time later celebrating the opening. It was a greatnight enjoyed by over 400 people. There was unlimited food, booze and entertainment till the wee hours andI think everyone that attended needs to tip their hat to the management team for putting on such a great event. My best wishes go out the Kuta Townhouses for the fantastic achievement and the continuing support to ourweekly publication.

Along with the stage three opening, sees the new restaurant opening in the same complex being the BrazilianAussie BBQ. Now the first time I heard about this I had certain images in my head which I'm sure the most ofyou agree send the imagination running wild, however, after attending the event and trialling out the foodthat is cooked on a specialist rotisserie by a master Brazilian chef, I am convinced the place will be a success. The powers that be have set the dinner price at $10.00 Aussie dollars and for this you can eat as much as youlike. I'm not talking about a little serve, I'm telling you this will blow most other similar deals away. Theyhave PRIME QUALITY Lamb, Chicken, Beef, Pork, Sausages, Chorizo, etc etc along with aFULLsalad bar thrown in for the price. As much as you can eat without any complaints. A great place to take the

family for a decent feed while on holidays. Check out their artwork on page 28. Thanks again KTH

On a different note, I have been kee nly keeping my eyes on the schoolie situation in down town Kuta and atthe point of writing this ramble I'm pleased to say that for the most part of the period the schoolies have beenvery well behaved and not caused too much trouble around town. I spent last Friday afternoon at the pressurehour in Crusoe's, which offers free beer for an hour provided nobody leaves the bar or uses the toilet (addingto the pressure) and there was a large crew of schoolies in there for the hour and I have to say they acted likehumans should act when in a foreign country respectfully enjoying themselves. It re ally is terrible to see as inthe last few years so many youngies treating the place badly and generally giving Australians a bad name. Ihope the season finishes with minimum drama and that everyone gets to see Christmas with their families.I see on a separate and final note again that the Balinese are really trying to make a festive feel in and aroundtown and can safely say I haven't seen so many Christmas trees put up in my many years living in Bali. It's areal credit to the locals for doing this and onlyhope the most of the visitors to the island offer asmuch respect to the locals as they offer to us.

Ok folks that's my lot for the week, as I think it'stime to taste test a few little cold green ones. Ihope the most of you stay safe, happy, healthyand always remember, to be a good liar, youmust have an even better memory.

    Enjoy your week.ALIASJ.

The global economic crisisis beginning to be felt by exportersin Bali.

Hundreds of members ofAssociation of Exporters andHandicraft Producers (Asephi-Bali) are reporting decliningbusiness activity. Experts predict

that the current downturn inexports will continue for severalyears before eventually staging acomeback.

Almost all our members, totaling 350, say theirbusiness is down. The reduct ion inexports started in2009. The averagerate of decline inexports has averaged

8-9% each year, explainedthe chairman of Asephi-Bali, KetutDharma Siadja and quoted inBisnis.com.

Siadja said the economiccrisis in Europe and America andin a number of other markets arecausing the drop in exports.Adding, Stagnation and a drop inexport values will continue for along time, because the economiccrisis continues."

Speaking at a seminar onnew export rules affecting nativewood products, Siadja warnedthat even though exports are

Much has been written about thisdusty, arid and rugged area, whichforms the southern most tip of theisland.

Limestone cliffs of up to 100 meters inheight provide some of the best views in the

world, along with some deserted white sandybeaches.Everyone wants a piece of this are,

from international hotel chains such asBvlgari, Versace and Banyan Tree, toestablished residential villa developerslooking for that perfect plot. The area offerssecluded beaches, and exclusivity to namebut a few reasons why this is fast becomingthe place to be.

Prices have more than tripled in thearea over last 2 years alone with still plenty ofpotential to be realized, so now is a plan. Onlya short 15 minutes drive fromthe international airport, The Bukit is fastbeing referred to as the new MillionairesRow.

THE BUKIT JIMBARANJimbaran is just south of the airport and Kuta. This

was formerly a real backwater of south Bali, just a tinyfishing village with a daily market. That all started tochange in the 1980s and Jimbaran is now home toseveral world class 5 star beach resorts, plus a few moremoderate mid-market hotels.

There is however little in the way of budgetaccommodation and there are also many high-end villas

in this area, particularly on the ridges of high groundabove Jimbaran Bay. This has resulted in monikers suchas the "Beverly Hills of Bali" or "Millionaire's Row".

The bay itself has a pleasant white sand beachand is very safe for swimming. The three clusters ofgrilled seafood restaurants on the beach are a majortourist draw in the evenings, as is the truly stunningsunset.

Jimbaran is also home to a Norwegian University,Gateway College, with around 500 students studyingathletics, philosphy, culture, economics and journalism. The school is located in Kedonganan close to SariSegara Resort and in Jl, Bantas Kau where it also has asmall cafe.

Jimbaran has an increasing number of rather chicshops but there is little or no nightlife here. It has theadvantage of being a little closer to Kuta and Seminyakand the cultural highlights of Central Bali.

Bali Governor says Buleleng airport must happenThe point is that it shouldhappen, but whether in theeast or west depends on thetechnical requirements ofthe aircraft, he said during ameeting with Bulelengregency representatives in

Denpasar on Sunday.According to him, Bali requires

an alternative airport outside NgurahRai because it will be overwhelmed ifthe number of foreign tourists to Balireaches more than five million.

The expansion of the currentairport is the terminal only and therecan be no expansion of the runway,he said.

He said that with foreigntourists arrivals around 2.8 to 3million a year plus the domestictourist visits about 7 million, theairport is already congested. It will beoverwhelmed if later the number offoreign and domestic travellersgrows to 15 million a yea r.

Pastika hopes that variousgroups do not fuss too much andreact quickly to the presence ofinvestors.

Bali's former police chief saysit's time to speak directly with theSOE Minister Dahlan Iskan on the

construction of the Bulelengairport, including funding that couldbe financed by a consortium of stateand local governments.

I myself do not actually agreethat we have to use foreign investors. But if you want it fast, you have to useinvestors, he said.

He hoped in the future theparties who are not competent in thefield of aviation do not comment toomuch because he feared that it wouldmake investors become worried.

He said Indian investors hadalready shown interest in financingthe construction of the airport inBuleleng, yet reversed that afterseeing many negative commentsf rom par ts of the Bal inesecommunity.

Data from PT Angkasa Pura Isaid that until November 2012 thisyear the number of passengersreached 12,771,874 comprising6,594,830 domestic passengers and6,177,044 international passengersat Ngurah Rai Airport.

The central government hasbeen conducting a feasibility studyon the potential 10 sites for a newairport in Bali. The ten locationsspread between Tabanan regency,Jembrana and Buleleng regency,

said Head of BulelengCommunications in Singaraja,Sukerta Arya.

    H o w e v e r , t h e c e n t r a lgovernment concluded Bulelengregency the most worthy, and theairport should be located precisely inGerokgak.

In addition, the governmentwill also develop Gerokgak asconservation area, Sangsit as aresidential area, and an additionalcamp as an extension of the coastalattractions.

Meanwhile, the DirectorGeneral of Land TransportationMinistry Herry Bhakti S Gumay saidin Nusa Dua some time ago that theresults of a feasibility study onGerokgak are correct.

But there is a process thatmust be carried out before the start ofconstruction, he said on thesidelines of the ASEAN Transportministers meeting.

He also asked the regency ofBuleleng to provide land measuring

There is a sage gate that is called "CandiBentar", it is built with basalt like thrusting theheaven. Balinese praises the magnificence, theyare worshiping it, saying that "Mother's temple".Head temple of Balinese Hinduism. Pura Besakih isone in six representative temples in Bali.

The history of Pura Besakih is old, it is saidthat it was a place of the training of the priest in the 8century. Afterwards, the position was established asa temple for royal family's funeral at Gelgel dynastyin the 16th century. Three temples where threerepresentative gods (Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu) ofHinduism are enshrined are centers, and a lot ofshrines are built in the circumference. Pura Besakihhas brought a temple big and small about 30,000 inBali various places together. Pura Besakih isaggregate of about 30 temples.

There is "Mel" piled to 11 layers in the temple."Mel" is a tower. The height of "Mel" shows thestatus. There are a lot of beautiful sculptures andstatues, it is grand atmosphere.

"Pura Penataran Agung" comes into viewwhen walking in the approach to a temple. PuraPenataran Agung to which Shiva is enshrined is acenter of Pura Besakih.

There is Pura KidulingKreteg to which Brahma isenshrined in the southwest, and is Pura Batu Madeg towhich Vishnu is enshrined inthe northwest, and PuraPenataran Agung is at thecenter. The tourist must notenter in the temple.

In Pura Besakih thathead temple of BalineseHinduism, a lot of festivalsare held in one year. Even if Icount only Odalan in PuraBesakih by the Wukucalendar, it is done 55 timesa year. Wuku calendarmeaning is week, and one ofsystem done in Bali. 210days (30 weeks) areassumed to be one year in

the Wuku calendar. Odalan is the anniversaryof the establishment festival of each temple. Moreover, it crowds so that it is not possible to moveby the worshipper from various place, when it is agrand festival once in every 10 years and 100 years. Therefore, the possibility that the tourist meets a

wonderful festival is very high.It rains easily in the afternoon, and the fogoccurs easily, too. Going in the morningrecommends it. Going early morning to see sunriserecommends it. Gunung Agung becomes thin purpleby the sunrise. This scenery is very fantasticatmosphere. And the stripe of light looks as if god'sroad, and it becomes impossible to be impressed bythe mysterious scenery, and to say anything. Theperson who is the pagan might be able also to seegod's appearance at this time.

Hazards:The peddler is considerably persistent. Work

hard and keep refusing. The local guide of high priced is considerably

persistent. They say, "The holy guide who servesGod" and approach. However, only the contracted

guide can enter the temple in Pura Besakih.Recently, sightseeing in Pura Besakih is avoided, because there are a lot of troubles of the expensiveguide.

It is easy to shake rain because it is the foot ingunung Agung. Bringing the umbrella and theraincoat recommends it.

"The important thing is, first of all, that Israel getsinto this team, meets his team-mates so that he'sfeeling good about himself, feeling good about thepeople he's playing footy wi th every day."

In a statement, Waratahs Rugby CEO JasonAllen said Folau's signing marked a new, excitingchapter in the franchise's history.

"Winning Israel over to rugby union is a majorboost for the Waratahs and an exciting prospect forSuper Rugby fans across Australia," he said.

"As a player, Israel clearly has an exceptionaltalent but what was equally important to us was theenormous level of respect he commands from thosewho know him and have worked with him.

Cap questionedThe Waratahs' Super Rugby rivals the Melbourne

Rebels yesterday questioned how Folau could fit underthe NSW side's salary cap.

The ARU has introduced $4.5 million salary capfor each of Australia's five Super Rugby clubs for thefirst time and takes effect from the start of next year.

The Rebels and the Waratahs are the only two

Australian franchises to have a spot to fill on their 30-man rosters for next season, but the Melbourne sidehas shut the door on any prospect of signing the centre.

"I can't see how any Super Rugby clubs, includingthe Rebels, could afford him with the late timing and thesalary caps that have been enforced," Rebels coachDamien Hill said on Monday.

Folau last week cited an absence of passion forAFL football after walking away from his deal with theGWS Giants, and last season's NRL wooden spoonerParramatta - under the guidance of former NSW Stateof Origin coach Ricky Stuart - was hot favourite to lurethe 23-year-old back to rugby league.

News Limited reports had indicated the Eels hadmade a request to the NRL to deliberately break thesalary cap in order to squeeze Folau onto their books

for the next two seasons. The NRL said on Friday that it had been workingwith the club to ensure Folau could fit under the Eels'salary cap for 2013 and "both believed that significantprogress could be made".

But the league confirmed Folau had not accepteda formal, unconditional offer from Parramatta and theathletic back, who earned seven caps for Australia, would not play rugby league next season.

Folau's NRL career began in Melbourne in 2007,where he played 59 matches for the Storm beforemoving to Brisbane in 2009, scoring 36 tries in 37

appearances with the Broncos. He made five State of Origin starts for

Queensland and played in the inauguralNRL All Stars game in 2010.

Folau made his AFL debut for GreaterWestern Sydney in round one of 2012 andkicked his first of two career goals in roundfour against Adelaide.

"It has been a long haul awayfrom home, with some toughchallenges, and to come throughthem has been really special."

Smith praised the fightingspirit of his side inregrouping after beingoutplayed in the first twoTests of the series.

Crows stand behind banned bossesThe Adelaide Football Club board hasunanimously voted to support Steven Triggand Phil Harper's return to the Crows at theend of their suspensions.

As well as handing out hefty fines, the AFLCommission yesterday banned the chief executiveand football manager from any involvement with the

competition over the Kurt Tippett salary capscandal.Along with a $50,000 fine, Trigg is banned

from the AFL from January 1 and will be replaced in

the interim by chairman Rob Chapman.Trigg's total suspension was a year, but half will

be suspended for five years. While Chapman took questions when he

fronted the media after Friday's marathoncommission hearing, Trigg would only read from aprepared statement and cited legal sensitivities fordoing so.

"As chief executive then and now, I've acceptedfull responsibility for what the AFL considers to be asignificant transgression of those rules and for that,I'm very sorry," Trigg said.

He later added on his suspension: "it'sunprecedented and it's impossible to sit here withoutfeeling it's extraordinarily tough.

"Obviously, an example has been set."Chapman then spoke and clearly his top

priority was to say sorry."The first and most important thing that I want to

say tonight is to sincerely apologise to everyoneassociated with Adelaide," he said.

"I'm talking staff, coaches, players andmembers, supporters and importantly our sponsors.

"I am sorry on behalf of everyone involved."Trigg and football operations manager Phil

Harper, who is banned for two months, haveChapman's personal support.

But it will be up to the board to decided whetherthe Crows retain the two key officials.

Trigg has been Adelaide's chief executive formore than a decade and he also receivedendorsements from AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrickand chief executive Andrew Demetriou after theTippett hearing.

"This looked not like a systematic breach, fromour point of view," Fitzpatrick said.

"Clearly, Steven would like to have his timeagain.

"It's fundamentally the one transaction ... inother ways, Steven Trigg has been an exemplarychief executive."

Demetriou said he would gladly work again withTrigg, Harper and former Crows football operationsmanager John Reid, who also received a six-monthban.

"He knows he made a mistake, in many waysit's an act of stupidity, because it's not in keeping withhis performance and his character," Demetriou saidof Trigg.

"This is a very hefty sanction."He will learn from this and will be welcomed

    back into the industry."

    Dear Martha,

Congratulations on being sodirect & correct in yourresponse to Marvin in lastweek's column. The patheticindividual unfortunately isone of many in Bali who uses too many Bintangsas an excuse to mess up, lie or cheat. Some ofthese idiots lie for no apparent reason aboutunimportant stuff as well as causing problems forothers. It almost has become a way of life for oneguy I know. He needs to leave the Island & goback to the western country that he came from &have a reality check. So as well as what wealready know, we must also be aware of otherexpats who are likely to lie & cheat you. What

    motivates these idiots?Tiffany

    Dear Tiffany,

Sadly dear, it is a fact that when a lot of westernerscome to live in Bali they exchange their brains fora VOA, which somehow gets extended for monthson end. You can be anything you want to be from acook to a rocket scientist depending on thequantity of bintang consumed. They choose tohide in Bali from reality & given enough bintangsthey convince themselves they are infallible & gettotally lost in a delusional mind set.

Firstly it is a pretty controversial song, so already youhave something to talk about. At the start of the song,

when she sings "Let's pretend, we're just two peopleand you're no better than me" and at the end when shesings "Dear Mr. president you'd never take a walk withme" she is talking about how the president believes hisstatus makes him a better person and more importantthan other people.

"I'd like to ask you some questions if you can speakhonestly" is about how he has a tendency to lie."what do you feel when you see all the homeless on thestreet" and "what do you see when you look in themirror, are you proud" is about how he has let peopledown, and is responsible in some cases forhomelessness, and that he did nothing about it, andwhether he feels guilty when he looks in the mirror. The chorus "How do you sleep when the rest of us cry?How do you dream when a mother has no chance to saygoodbye? How do you walk with your head held high? Can you even look me in the eye and tell me why?" Is

the same, but also talking about how he should feelgrateful he is so lucky and has it better than most. It'salso saying he has let bad things happen to people andhis country, and how can he say he is a goodperson/president because of it and whether he i s manenough to own up to it."Were you a lonely boy? Are you a lonely boy?" is abouthow he is surrounded by people, but does he have anytrue friends?"How can you say no child is left behind, we're not dumband we're not blind. They're all sitting in you cells, whileyou pave the road to hell." Is about how bush said hewould provide equal opportunities for all children, whichwas a lie, instead he makes it harder for certain races, communities etc."what kind of father would take his own daughters rightsaway? What kind of father might hate his own daughterif she were gay?" is about how he is against abortion(taking away women's rights to make their own choicesabout their own bodies) and how is against gay people."I can only imagine what the first lady has to say" Isabout how the first lady must disagree with choices hemakes but has no power over them.

The bridge about "Let me tell you about hard work" Isbasically a shout out to bush, telling him t hat there areso many people out there, working there asses off andnot getting anything in return and he is doing nothingabout it , and he doesn't know the meaning of real work.

    The mission's planning

In 2000 physicist LeonardReiffel said that viewing the

Reiffel, now 85, directed theinquiry at the former ArmourResearch Foundation, now part of

the Illinois Institute of Technology. He later served as a deputy directorat NASA.

Sagan, who later becamerenowned for popularizing scienceon television, died in 1996.

The author of one of Sagan'sbiographies suggested that he mayhave committed a security breach in1959 after revealing the classified

Under the scenario, amissile carrying a small nucleardevice was to be launched froman undisclosed location and

Man jailed after trying to steal rhino headA Londoner was sentenced to18 months in jail after hisattempt to steal a rhino headworth up to 500,000 pounds($800,000) from a museumwas thwarted by staff andvisitors.

Patrick Kiely, 29, pleadedguilty to trying to steal the stuffedspecimen from Castle Museum inNorwich last February, because ofthe high value of rhinoceros horns, which are used in southeast Asianmedicine and now trade for morethan gold.

Kiely was part of a gang offour who smashed a glass casecontaining the rhino head whilean accomplice waited outsidethe museum in a stolen car.

"As they attempted toescape with the head, staff andvisitors stood firm and would not

let them leave. They dropped thehead, partially damaging it, andescaped," prosecutor Peter Gairtold Norwich Crown Court.

He said the rhino headdated from the late Victorian eraand was worth between 300,000

and 500,000 pounds. The museum has since

replaced the rhino's damaged hornwith a replica.

The use of rhinoceros hornsin Chinese medicine, as well as aspreading belief in Southeast Asiathat they may cure cancer, has

fuelled a surge in rhino poachingthis year and propelled the streetvalue of rhino horns to $65,000 akilogram, making them moreexpensive than gold, platinum orcocaine.
