The Middle Atlantic PGA (MAPGA) Hall of Fame has selectedGeorge Diffenbaugh for their 2013 class, and he will be honored atthe their Hall of Fame Banquet March 9, 2013.
George was our PGA Head Professional from 1938 until his retire-ment in 1976, and Professional Emeritus until his passing late in1977. The Hall of Fame honors Section PGA members and otherswho have made outstanding contributions to the MAPGA and tothe game of golf.
Born in Baltimore in 1901, Diffenbaugh started as a caddie atBaltimore Country Club and worked his way up to AssistantProfessional. He worked at several Baltimore courses and also in
Saranac Lake, NY and Miami, FL before coming to Kenwood from Indian Spring in 1938.
In his 38 year tenure here, Diffenbaugh was noted for his success in creating the futureof golf through his junior golf program. He worked with elite juniors such as BobbyBrownell, winner of eleven DC Amateur Championships, but his great joy was introduc-ing young people of all abilities to golf. As Brownell said in 1960, “The thing about Georgeis he treats you like an adult – not a kid.”
Diffenbaugh’s philosophy was to keep things simple for juniors and improve their currentabilities. He said “You shouldn’t force a kid into golf; he’ll resent it, won’t play well, won’tenjoy it. He’ll probably catch on later.” Even today, many of Kenwood’s top players areproducts of “Mr. D’s” junior program (though most of them are now senior golfers).
Organizationally, Diffenbaugh served as President of the MAPGA in 1937 and was namedMAPGA Professional of the Year in 1957. In 1958, he was asked to chair the newly-formedMAPGA Junior Golf Committee. Working in conjunction with Frank Emmet he helpeddevelop a legendary junior program in the Washington area.
Competitive golf was a highlight in Diffenbaugh’s 57-year golf career. He won the 1935District of Columbia Open and competed in the 1937 and 1946 PGA Championships andthe 1940 US Open. He had high finishes in other championships, including four runner-ups in the Maryland Open. Walter MacCallum in the Washington Star wrote that “he is thesmoothest piece of golfing machinery on the East Coast.”
He had no children of his own but married Jean Peterson late in his life and “inherited”three stepdaughters and ten grandchildren, who he enjoyed and doted on. JeanDiffenbaugh also loved Kenwood and was an active participant in golf, bowling, and socialactivities for the rest of her life.
Kenwood is very proud to have “Mr. D” as our first MAPGA inductee.

KWGA
By Ann Pelham
FF or the KWGA, March brings the first official event of the 2013 season, but
there’s a catch: it’s indoors. The annualSpring Meeting is set for 9:30 am,Wednesday, March 20. Coffee will beserved (china teacups only; no mugsallowed!). Please bring your suggestions, questions, and any concerns.
The Spring Meeting will be themorning after the annual Kenwood TeeParty on Tuesday, March 19. Do stop bythe KWGA table, and then put your armaround those potential new members whomight be in the room. Both events are agreat chance to catch up and look ahead towarmer days.
By then, the full KWGA schedule willbe in hand, but a couple of dates are firmnow:
• KWGA Opening Day is set forWednesday, April 17, and will probablybe a shotgun start. Remember, walkingis permitted for events other thanshotguns. Just indicate your preferenceat sign up.
• KWGA Member-Guest will beWednesday, June 5 (the rain date is stillbeing worked out at press time). Thanksin advance to the three co-chairs: JudyPerry, Roseann Rafferty, and EllenSchiller. Let your guests know now toSave the Date: June 5. More detailscoming soon.
This year’s event schedule will againoffer at least 16 tournaments and specialevents, plus Open Play on those Wednesdayswhen more formal events are not scheduled.
A benefit of KWGA membership isthat no participation fee is charged for halfof the 16 events, including favorites such asthe Board of Governors, the ThompsonFour-Ball, Dames & Babes, and Women onthe Weekend. (Note for those consideringthis beneficial membership: The onlyrequirement for joining the KWGA is aUSGA 18-hole handicap of 45 or below forKenwood; that means an index of 40.4.)
In 2012, the KWGA saw participationin its events increase by 42 percent over2011. When asked about the reasons,President Harriet Moss cited a number offactors:
• The promotion of Lynne Hunter to headpro, which gave an overall boost towomen golfers.
• Several new KWGA members, including Niners who opted for dualmembership in both women’s golfgroups (the KWGA, which emphasizes18 holes, and the Niners, who focus on9 hole rounds). This new dual categoryended an era when a player was notallowed to join both groups.
• New or tweaked formats for severalevents.
• Heightened attention from theprofessional staff to all aspects of eventmanagement, plus their warm andfriendly support (such as gladly wearinggoofy hats in keeping with an event’stheme).
Harriet, who continues as Presidentthis year, worked with returning VicePresident Carrie Lin (who also serves asTournament Chair) and with HeadProfessional Lynne Hunter on the 2013schedule, which will be presented in full at
the March 20 KWGA Spring Meeting.Handbooks should also be available then.
Before we look ahead to InterclubCompetition, a look back at year-endawards:
• Hats off to Ellen Schiller, honored asMost Improved Woman Golfer at theGolf Awards Banquet on November 10.In 2012, Ellen dropped her handicap by 6 points, almost a 30 percentimprovement.
• In the year-long Ringers competition,Sally Seawright nailed the top prize. The results were announced by KerryMurray, chair of the Ringers, at theDecember 5 holiday luncheon, anannual joint affair for KWGA and theNiners. (Special thanks to Kim Chesterfor providing the festive tabledecorations.) Sally, who diligentlyrecorded her scores on the inside backcover of her orange KWGA handbook(and submitted tons of paper slips toKerry), put together a gross score of 59.Fortunately for the rest of us, there arealso Ringers prizes for net scores, andthe top winner in that category wasJoanie Golden, with a 39. Here are otherwinners, in flights by handicap:
– 1st flight: Camilla Rothwell won,with a net 49, and Harriet Moss tooksecond, with a net 52.
– 2nd flight: Jen Taylor was first with anet 45, followed by Helen Freemanwith a net 48.
– 3rd flight: Cynda Wilcox won with anet 48, with Livia Johnson second, net 52.

FROM THE FITNESS CENTER
By Laila Linden
BB etween the weather, the 24 hour news cycle, jobs, family and the DC area
traffic, it is hard not to be a stressed outmess! The good news is that virtually anyform of EXERCISE from yoga, swimminglaps, tennis to working out with a personaltrainer, can act as a stress reliever. Anothercritical reason to fit exercise into yourstress management plan and weeklyroutine!
Here are some reasons why exercisereduces stress in your life:
Exercise can decrese “stresshormones” like cortisol and at the sametime pump up those “feel-good”neurotransmitters called endorphins.Physical activity increases the productionof these chemicals in the brain. You mayhave heard it called a “runner’s high” butyou don’t have to be a runner to experienceit. A rousing game of tennis or a BootCamp class can create this sensation!
It’s mediation in motion. Movementand physical acitivity can take your mindoff your problems and redirect it on to theactivity you are involved in. Exercise can“clear your head” and help you focus onmore positive things.
Exercise usually has the added bonusof socialization with friends. Whether youare taking a class, working out with abuddy, or playing a tennis match the socialsupport you receive helps the stress-relief.
Exercise can help you become moreresilient to future stress. Physical activitymay be linked to lower physiologicalreactivity toward stress. It may help youbuild some immunity to future stress whilehelping you cope with current stress.
These are all great reasons to getmoving and be more active! So hopefullywe will see you soon at the Fitness Center! ★

EE very few months I receive in the mail a reminder from the garage I get my car serviced at to come
in for my regular oil change. Like aresponsible owner of a thirteen year old car,I take it in and try to stay ahead of majorrepairs by taking a proactive approach. Sofar it has allowed me to avoid breakdownsand unplanned trips to the mechanics. Iknow that there will probably come a daywhen something happens that requires meto call AAA to get my vehicle into myfavorite garage, but so far my plan isworking. Why do I mention this, well ourbodies are very similar to our cars. Unlikemany who lease a new car every few years, avoiding most vehicle repair issues bytrading it in on a new model, our bodiesdon’t work that way. There are no trade-ins! Since we are our body’s only owner itmight make sense to have a HealthMaintenance Plan just as we have a VehicleMaintenance Plan.
At Kenwood we are very lucky to haveaccess to wonderful equipment andfacilities to stay active and develop our ownHealth Maintenance Plan. There areopportunities for all ages and ability levelsto find the right group exercise class, rightpersonal trainer for help creating orfollowing through with a exercise plan, aswell as pros from swim, tennis and golf tohelp with technique and proper gearselection, but one of the best servicesKenwood has (in my opinion of course) isthe Spa. We have therapists trained in allstyles of bodywork to customize eachsession for your individual needs. We havethe ability to work with your body the sameway a highly trained auto mechanic does.We have worked on many bodies withmany different problems and have studiedwhat style of massage, stretching or othermodality such as heat, ice, cupping, kinesiotaping, etc. is best utilized in eachsituation and we are eager to share ourexpertise. We want to be part of yourHealth Maintenance Plan.
The Benefits of Regular Massage
Massage therapy is increasinglyregarded as a legitimate and important partof one’s health maintenance plan. Massagetherapy can alleviate stress, significantlyreduce pain and muscular tension, and canhelp achieve better body awareness. Inaddition to a healthy diet and exercise, massage can help prevent common physicaland muscular ailments caused by age, repetitive motions, and stress.
Since stress is estimated to beresponsible for over 90 percent of alldisease, one of the best preventivemeasures you can take is to reverse theeffects of the stress cycle. “The benefits ofmassage are cumulative. This being thecase, it only makes sense that those achesand pains you see your massage therapistfor might disappear faster, stay awaylonger, or even go away altogether withmore frequent visits. Stress might neverreach those physiologically detrimentallevels where the immune system issuppressed or the nervous system is sentinto an alarm state.” (Osborn, Karrie.“Massage Multiplied.” Body SenseAutumn/Winter 2009: 11-12)
NEWS FROM THE SPA
Benny Vaughn, sports massage expertand owner of Athletic Therapy Center inFort Worth, TX, said that “consistentmassage therapy can increase flexibilitybecause structured touch stimulus enhancesthe nervous system’s sensory and spatialprocessing capacity...That is, the personbecomes more aware of their body’smovement in space and of tightness or painlong before it reaches a critical point ofmechanical dysfunction.”
As with most things, massage therapycosts money. It seems in our society that wehave trouble justifying expenses related tolife’s intangibles; namely personal well-being and maintenance. However, for thoseclients that have already experienced thebeneficial effects of massage, they willagree with me that the benefits oftreatments far out weight the monetarycost. Remember: an ounce of prevention isworth a pound of cure.
Don’t wait, Schedule your Massagetoday and let us help you develop orenhance your Health Maintenance Plan!
