Dear Best Friend,I often think of our donors as best friends. I have even called a first-time donor to Kentucky

Wesleyan College my new best friend. I realize some of us are just getting to know one another, butthink about it.

When someone shares our values, believes in our mission, supports our family and invests in ourvision for the future, is that not a candidate for “best friend?” As you share your friendship withKentucky Wesleyan College, as you attend campus events, volunteer your service and your financialsupport, we thank you for all you do for our students.

Let me tell you about some more of my best friends – our students. My excitement for the accom-plishments of our students could not be higher. I had the privilege of shaking the hands of 110 smil-ing graduates as they crossed the stage in Hocker-Hall Grove on May 13th. While many graduatingseniors are very composed and professional as they accept their college diploma, some can’t help butradiate a positive energy. I shake their hands in that instant after they’ve held their diploma for thefirst time and I absorb as much of that energy as I can.

I believe that our faculty and staff have provided those graduates with the knowledge and skills theyneed to make a positive difference in the world. And I believe our Class of 2006 will become contributing members of our communi-ties.

As you read this edition of KW Today, we have just welcomed a new group of friends – our incoming freshmen, the class of 2010.They are a little nervous, but they are energetic, they are eager, and they are large in number! With about 400 new students, we needyour friendship even more.

Included in this issue on page 22 is our 2005 – 2006 Honor Roll and Annual Report. Please take some time to read the names of allthe alumni and best friends who give so generously to Kentucky WesleyanCollege.

I want you to know that your gifts are being carefully managed and investedwell in the lives of our promising students, enabling quality programs of educationto thrive, and laying paths to the future.

On behalf of our students who may not have the opportunity to sit at the tablewith good friends and donors, please accept our thanks. You are wonderful and Iappreciate your giving. We count you among our best friends.

Under the leadership of Adam Shourds ’99, the Campus Ministriesprogram provides many opportunities for students to participate in thegeneral religious life on campus. An important and sometimes life chang-ing part of that program is student mission trips.

Moss Pointe, MississippiSpring break for most college students means the sun, the beach and the

ocean. However, for many KWC students, spring break 2006 involvedtraveling to other states, even other countries, to minister to the needs ofothers. One mission trip to Moss Pointe, Mississippi involved 26 studentsand seven adults who spent a week helping victims of Hurricane Katrina.

“We were welcomed by Green Pastures Christian Church and St. PaulUnited Methodist Church, both African American congregations,”Shourds said. “The students were overwhelmed by their hospitality. Thecongregation was so thankful that we were down there. It was a big dealto them that we were interacting with their church.”

The group began each day with breakfast and devotion. Lunch waseaten at the work site. Shourds said, “The students worked hard and werepassionate about the work. No one had to motivate them. They didn’twant to get off the roof to eat lunch.”

The students split into four groups each day, working on roofs, insula-tion and dry wall. Shourds said, “They learned some skills they neverknew.”

Maeghan Garrett, a junior from White Plains, Ky., said, “We did roof-ing and sheet rock. I’m afraid of heights, so I was proud that I could getup on a roof. The first day I just sat down and scooted around the roof, but I got over it.”

Worship was a large part of the mission trip. Garrett said, “Each nightwe had a worship service and sang. We then broke into small groups offive and talked about the day and had prayer. One of the best things aboutthe trip is that I got to know more people and I made good friends withinmy small group.”

Participating in the Katrina mission trip made a profound difference inthe lives of many KWC students. Nathan Cobb, a senior from Owensborosaid, “A mission trip is a different experience internally for everyone andit’s hard to express. On this particular mission trip, we were not witnessingthrough words, but by serving.

It was hard work and I didn’t see the final result of the work we did onthose houses. I was a small part of rebuilding a house but I still know whatI did will have a lasting impact on the community. It’s the same with God

– you don’t see results this day or the week after, but it has a lastingimpact.”

Both Maeghan and Nathan were overwhelmed at the destruction left byKatrina. “I thought it would be cleaned up because so much time hadpassed,” Maeghan said. “There were houses caved in and a car in a swim-ming pool. Houses were condemned because of the flooding.”

Nathan added, “It had been six months since the hurricane, so we hadno idea what it really looked like at the time of the hurricane, but peoplehave been working hard down there. They offered us the best of what theyhad – unconditionally, especially from the church where we stayed.”

Because of the rewarding experience they had in Mississippi, bothMaeghan and Nathan worked during June and July with Sun Teams.Nathan traveled throughout Eastern Kentucky participating in BibleSchools and sharing his faith and message with others. Maeghan worked inAmherst, Mass. with creative ministry, including sign language, art andmusic.

Wroclaw, PolandOther KWC students traveled much further than Mississippi for their

spring break mission trip – they went to Wroclaw, Poland. Six students, two alumni and one KWC staff member worked in the urban, inner cityslums of Poland where buildings are still damaged from WWII.

The group stayed at a Baptist church located in the middle of the innercity and helped with several church projects. They also worked with chil-dren and high school and college students, building relationships andteaching American culture.

Jeremy ’97 and Laura Sparks Vincent ’04 are missionaries in Polandand the KWC group worked with them at a Kid’s Club in the poverty areaof Poland. Alicia Kittinger, a sophomore from Hanson, Ky., said, “Weworked with high school students in small groups, talking about our cul-ture and speaking English with them.

With the university students we also met in small groups,” she contin-ued. “There is no talk of God in the classroom, so we would go out withthem and talk about God and Christianity.”

The students also had the opportunity to make side trips in Poland.“Auschwitz was an awesome experience – the museum, gas chamber, cre-matory – we didn’t say a word while we were there.

We learned about Polish culture and we heard all the American stereo-types,” Alicia said. “This trip taught me communication skills and to stepoutside my comfort zone. I would definitely do it again.”

Alicia Kittinger, above, worked with a Kid's Club inWroclaw, Poland, during spring break.

Working on roofs was a new experience for students like Nathan Cobb, pictured below, whotraveled with a group to Moss Pointe, Miss.

And she did. After a May training session in Louisville throughEdge Outreach, Alicia traveled to Costa Rica over the summer to helpwith water purification.

Mandeville, JamaicaYet another student mission trip during spring break included

Daniel Blandford, a sophomore from Owensboro, who traveled withfour students from Brescia University to Mandeville, Jamaica. Theywere accompanied by Dr. Suzanne Rose, KWC associate professor ofEnglish and Father Andy Gardner.

Before leaving for Jamaica the students collected toys, school sup-plies, medicine and non-perishable food items to take with them.Daniel said, “We all felt we were getting more out of the trip than wewere giving.”

Daniel is a member of Catholics in Action at Kentucky Wesleyan.“Mandeville is our sister diocese. We were able to teach at a Catholicschool and we also did some maintenance work. I hope to go againthis spring break. We want to get more students involved and raisemoney to help build a house in Mandeville.”

Summer MinistriesAlthough mission trips are a big part of the Campus Ministry pro-

gram, there is much more to offer the students. A Summer Ministryteam was organized at KWC for the first time and traveled through-out the state in June and July, working with churches, three BibleSchools, the Kentucky Annual Conference, the Conference YouthDiscipleship Retreat at Lindsey Wilson College, and the KWCMission Camp.

Thirty middle school students from Settle Memorial UMC inOwensboro and St. Paul UMC in Louisville attended the KWCMission Camp in June. The team included Brittney Yates, a sopho-more from Henderson; Ryan Brunson, a senior from Louisville,Tammy Woods, a senior from Covington; Ryan Adams, a senior fromShelbyville; Eric White, a senior from Madisonville; and Scott ’06and Jackie Stanley Newman ’04.

Brittney explained what she learned from the summer ministryteam. “It has really opened my eyes to the many, many different waysGod can work. Whether through Vacation Bible School, a worshipservice, a Celebrate Recovery meeting, Camp Loucon, or a youthlock-in, God is at work everywhere and in every single person. I alsolearned that everything we have in this life is not ours. Everything wehave belongs entirely to Christ: our time, our stuff, our relationships, and our gifts. What we do with all of these is our choice, but ulti-mately should be turned back over to Him.”

School Semester MinistriesDuring the school year students also have the opportunity to par-

ticipate with BASIC (Brothers and Sisters in Christ, a UnitedMethodist student organization), CIA (Catholics in Action), andCROSS (Christ Reaching Out Saving Students, a Baptist organiza-tion).

Shourds said he hopes to take another group of students back toMoss Pointe during fall break in October. “Early in the semester wewant the students to come together and serve and get to know eachother in a unique way.” Other plans call for an agricultural missiontrip to Central Mexico during winter break in January.

Adam Shourds is providing the leadership needed so KWC stu-dents can grow in their faith. The Campus Ministry program isreaching out and offering students the opportunity to “step out oftheir comfort zone” and serve others.

A KWC Summer Ministry team was organized andmembers of the team are shown above with middleschool students at the KWC Mission Camp. BrittneyYates is kneeling on the front row left.

Maeghan Garrett traveled to Amherst,Mass. during the summer with the SunTeam and participated in creative ministry, including sign language, art and music.

Sororities and fraternities have come a long way since the founding of The Flat Hat Club(FHC) on November 11, 1750, by six students at the College of William and Mary. FHC hasthe distinction of being the first in a long line of Greek-letter fraternities and sororities found oncollege campuses today.

In the same fashion, sororities and fraternities at Kentucky Wesleyan have evolved since theywere first established as local chapters on the Winchester Campus. One thing that has notchanged is the diversity in the women and men who belong to sororities and fraternities andbond together to form life-long friendships.

“The best part of joining a sorority is knowing you’re never alone. When you come to collegeand don’t know where to go, there is a group of women there for you no matter what.” saidJackie Arnold, a senior from Louisville who is a member of Sigma Kappa.

“Joining a sorority,” said Cathy Meeks Bishop ’78, was a wonderful part of my collegeexperience. Kappa Delta provided me an arena to meet some wonderful women who wouldinfluence my life, then and now. Many of us were in eacher others’ weddings, we rejoiced in thebirth or adoption of our children, and have remained ‘sisters’ throughout the past 30 years.”

Sally Allen Crenshaw ’67 echoed those sentiments. “I joined AOPi for the camaraderie andwanting to have a connection.”

Membership numbers have always fluctuated within the Greek system at KWC. AlphaOmicron Pi and Phi Delta Theta, both a big part of campus life in the 60s and 70s, had toclose their doors during a period of decreasing enrollment and membership. Bishop said therewere only eight members when she pledged Kappa Delta in 1976.

Bryan Hill, a sophomore from Hopkinsville and a current member of Sigma Nu, said, “Weare a small group but we’re trying to get our numbers up. We work with alumni and they helpfinancially.” Hill’s father, Phil Hill ’77, was a Sigma Nu at KWC. “I heard him talk about hisgood times, so I accepted an open bid. It’s a good way to meet new people. I don’t know whypeople don’t join fraternities. I think it’s the mindset. Parents think fraternities party a lot.”

“The perception at Kentucky Wesleyan is, you are either an athlete or a Greek,” said RyanBrunson, a junior from Louisville. “Many who play sports feel their team is to them, what a fra-ternity or sorority is to the Greeks.” Arnold agreed. “Students don’t join because of sports, prob-ably more guys than girls because it’s a time management thing.”

Athletics didn’t get in the way of Lance James ’93 joining a fraternity. He played both soccerand baseball when he was a student at KWC. “Sigma Nu provided a place to meet and developfriendships with people I might not otherwise have known. I keep up with a number of theguys and about 15 – 20 meet every summer for a reunion.”

Students have other reasons for joining a fraternity or sorority. Brunson, who is president ofSigma Phi Epsilon, said, “I had no interest in joining when I came because of the stereotype. Iwas influenced by Scott Newman ’06 and Jeremy Vincent ’97, both good Christians, so I fig-ured if it was good enough for them, it was for me. Living in Deacon gives me a spirit of com-munity and family.”

The three fraternities have chapter rooms in Deacon where they conduct meetings, and thetwo sororities have recently moved their suites from Massie Hall to the second floor of theBarnard-Jones Administration Building, to allow for renovation of Massie into residence hallsuites. That wasn’t always the case.

According to Don Schmied ’69 who was a Sigma Nu, the fraternities had houses in the 60s.“Sigma Nu was located on Allen Street and I think Phi Delts were on Scherm Road and Sig Epswere located on Frederica. Probably due to low membership the fraternities couldn’t afford ahouse and moved back on campus.”

Sigma Phi Epsilon members recently renovated their chapter room, with the help of BradPhelps ’02, Josh Davis ’03, and Mark Luckett ’95. Phelps said, “Through national headquar-ters we found out we could create an Alumni and Volunteer Corporation to make upgrades.

We put together a proposal and it was approved,” Phelps explained. “We repainted the roomsand installed wood flooring in the chapter room and carpet in the study room. Furniture waspurchased, along with lighting, a television and computers for the study room.”

Providing community service is an integral part of fraternity and sorority life. In addition tocommunity service, each chapter sponsors fundraising events for local and national philanthro-pies.

Jeremy Johnson, a senior from Munfordville and a member of Sigma Alpha Mu, said, “Wedo Bounce for Beats for the Heart Association, and trick or treat for Pediatric Aids and last yearwe had a pie-in-the-face contest to raise money for Alzheimer’s. We also sent school supplies toJamaica with the KWC mission trip this spring.”

Page 15: KW Today Summer 2004

KENTUCKY WESLEYAN TODAY 1133

Kappa Delta also has several projects. Hope Hamilton, a senior from Versailles said, “Ournational philanthropy is Girl Scouts and our local is Girls Incorporated and Prevent ChildAbuse America. Each year we have a Shamrock project to benefit both. We also had a GirlScout slumber party for 35 girls.”

Sigma Kappa’s main philanthropy is the Spring Rock Fest that benefits Alzheimer’s. Arnoldsaid, “We also work with Inherit the Earth where we go to nursing homes and visit the residentsand we hold a Memory Walk every year for Alzheimer’s.”

Philanthropies have always been a part of the Greek system at KWC. Laura Warren Bassett’93 said Sigma Kappa worked with Alzheimer’s when she was a student. “We visited a localnursing home and did an annual walk-a-thon to raise funds for research.”

James remembers Sigma Nu supporting the Boys and Girls Club of Owensboro through carwashes and other fundraisers in the 90s. Crenshaw said AOPi provided service to the RockportOrphanage and the Arthritis Foundation when she was a student.

Fraternities and sororities also provide leadership opportunities for members. Bassett said sheserved in a leadership role during her three years as a member of Sigma Kappa. “I was presidentmy senior year. My leadership experience certainly helped to prepare me for my current job, working with and serving the general public daily in a healthcare capacity.”

In her second year as president of Kappa Delta, Hamilton said, “Learning how to deal withpeople and different issues and preparing reports will help me once I get out of college.”

As president of Sigma Phi Epsilon, Brunson said, “I have to stay on top of things and there’salways something that needs to be done. It’s a challenge and ultimately what doesn’t get done, you have to do it as president. It’s a leadership role where I feel I have the opportunity to affectchange.”

In addition to leadership, all sororities and fraternities stress academics. Johnson said “At onepoint the Sammies went from last to first in academics and we’ve won the Community ServiceAward the last two years.”

Hill said everyone in the Sigma Nu chapter works hard on keeping their grades up. “If some-one needs help, we study together.”

Grades are an important criteria to join a sorority or fraternity. “We look at the students’GPA before they join,” said Hamilton. “Kappa Delta members must be in good standing orthey can’t attend social functions. We had the highest scholastic standing of all Greeks this year.”

Alumni play a big role in every group. The Sammies have a chartered alumni group inOwensboro. Johnson said, “John Glover ’02 is president and Rob Kedenbury ’96 is chapteradvisor. We have an alum at every meeting. They share ideas, help with rush, plan parties - theyare extremely important to our chapter. Our alumni are knowledgeable and push us forwardand keep us on track.”

Traditions! Through the years, the Greek system at KWC has enjoyed special traditions.James said, “The most significant tradition within the Sigma Nu chapter was White Rose week-end, our annual spring formal, where we would go out of town for the weekend.”

Crenshaw remembers events like May Day and Homecoming. “We had a lot of activities thatincluded other Greeks, mostly parties as you might imagine.” Bishop described her personalfavorite. “When a sister was lavaliered, pinned or engaged, she got thrown into the showers inthe bathroom in Massie!”

Rob Brankamp ’84 served as president of Sigma Alpha Mu. “When I was a student, Greekswere the center of the on-campus social life. There was a party or dance every weekend in some-one’s chapter room. No one went home. The fraternities worked together in a spirit of coopera-tion so the parties didn’t overlap.”

He continued, “We might have an ‘odd sock’ party and flag football in the Quad was alsobig. We came up with our own entertainment.”

Today at Kentucky Wesleyan, Greek Week is a tradition, with events like the roommategame, water wars, Mr. KWC and powder puff football, each sponsored by a different Greekorganization.

The Greek system at Kentucky Wesleyan College continues to focus on philanthropy, aca-demics and fun, but the one constant in every chapter is friendship. Those special memoriesand close friends will last a lifetime.

If you would like to reconnect with your chapter and get more information, please contactCatherine Sherrard who serves as KWC Greek advisor. You can reach her at 270-852-3287 oremail [email protected].

When you start out teaching in a self-contained classroom at 18 years old, youmight not imagine that one day you’d be the chair of the education department at awell-respected college. Work hard enough, though, and it’s certainly possible. Forproof, look no further than Dr. Yvonne Taylor ’58, Kentucky Wesleyan College’s dis-tinguished professor of education who retired this spring after 16 years of service tothe college.

Taylor came to KWC in 1989 after 29 years as a middle school reading and lan-guage arts teacher in the Hancock County public school system. She also spent sixyears as a supervisor of instruction in the central office there. “It was an absolute god-send for me,” Taylor said about the KWC job. “It was just a capstone for my career. Iwasn’t ready for retirement. I intended to stay five years – I stayed 16.”

Taylor’s background gave her a unique perspective as she trained future teachers.“That’s probably what made her most effective for us,” said Jeanette Campbell ’01,who teaches seventh grade reading and writing at College View Middle School. “Weknew she had been in the trenches.”

“She wasn’t just talking from a textbook,” added Ben Arnold ’06, who coachesfootball and teaches at Warren East Middle School in Bowling Green. “She had amillion stories about things she went through that we would eventually face.”

For Taylor’s part, the students made her time at KWC worthwhile. “They reallyseemed to want to make the world a better place,” she said. “To be able to teach themis a pleasure. We have such strong graduates in classrooms all across the area. It’s reallygood to see the contributions they’re making.”

As Taylor’s career shows, teaching is the perfect way to influence others. She can’teven count the thousands of students she’s affected, students who have found theirown way into education and are now passing on the ideals they learned from Taylor.“She’s made a significant difference in the lives of the students with whom she’sworked,” said Martha O’Bryan, the current chair of KWC’s education department. “Ithink that’s reflected in the high regard that they express anytime her name is broughtup.”

“She was wonderful,” Campbell said. “I liked how she pushed you. She made youdo more than what you thought you could do.” “She really made you work,” Arnoldsaid. “When you teach, you can’t be lazy – she wouldn’t let you be lazy either. Sheinstills a work ethic in her students.”

At the same time, “To me, she was like a grandma,” Arnold said. “You could goand talk to her about anything. She’s a great cook. She had us over to her house. Shetook care of us.” “She related very well,” Campbell said. “She’s retired three times, been around a long time, (but) she’d get right in there with us. She knew the coolstuff on TV. She just knew everything. She’s an amazing woman.”

Taylor served as chair of the education department for several years at KWC andthen retired, but was lured back with the promise that she could just teach and leavethe administrative work to someone else. Not that she wasn’t good at it – she revisedthe entire education program, building much more of the all-important classroomexperience into the program and aligning classes to meet the state’s ever-changing reg-ulations for qualified teachers.

But her heart was with the students. “Teaching is what she loves,” said O’Bryan, who has known her since they both worked in public schools. “In every experience, Ihave found her to be a dedicated professional with an excellent sense of humor wholoves people first and learning is such a close second, it’s hard to even separate.”

Taylor studied for two years of her college degree at KWC and has maintained aconnection to the college through her church (Lewisport United Methodist) and herprofessional work. “Wesleyan has been sort of a rudder in my life,” she said. Now thatshe has retired for good, she’ll stay busy with her church, her family and her seat onthe Lewisport City Council.

Taylor earned her doctorate from Vanderbilt University almost on a whim, takingclasses with two former students while working full-time. “(We) said, ‘this would befun,’” she said of the decision she made to pursue an advanced degree while only fiveyears from retirement.

It’s to Kentucky Wesleyan’s everlasting benefit that Yvonne Taylor did earn thatdoctorate and return to her undergraduate roots to pass on a lifetime of knowledge.“She sets the bar for the type of employee KWC needs to look for,” Arnold said. “Shewas always there, she worked hard. She was a good, moral, Christian example of whatyoung professionals should strive for.”

By Benjamin Hoak ’97

At her retirement party in May, Dr. Taylor talks with formerstudents Amy Hegwood Crabtree ’05 and her husband,Eric Crabtree ’03, who both teach in Madisonville, Ky.

Dr. Taylor is shown with KWC President Anne CairnsFederlein and Dr. Billy Horrell at her honorary inductioninto Oak & Ivy in 2006.

MMiinneerrvvaa SSoocciieettyy (($$110000 ttoo $$224499)) honors the spirit of giving, symbolizedby Minerva – the decorative sculpture from the Administration Building onthe Winchester campus. This building, destroyed by a fire in 1905, wasrebuilt by generous donations from residents and friends. Today, Minervaresides on the current campus reminding us of this generosity.

HHeerriittaaggee SSoocciieettyy proudly recognizes persons who include the collegein their estate plans. Through this society, members express today theircommitment to strengthen Kentucky Wesleyan College in the future.
