Solar Nexus
This is the image: At the physical center of the human body--in the abdomen, just below the heart--a complex cluster of nerves coalesces into a network called the solar plexus. The equivalent place on the body of Kyiv is called Venetsianskyi Island, one of the pearls of the Dnieper River, but this emerald heart is not yet connected to the city.
This project forms a nexus from the vast series of networks already present around the islands by coalescing the ecological, cultural, and recreational vitality around the heart of Kyiv.
This is the situation: How can Kyiv activate the functional value of its islands while preserving their sensitive cultural and ecological conditions? The first objective brings more people, endangering the second.
This is the project: Solar Nexus extends the surface of the islands with a flexible, modular, floating landscape. This floating landscape accommodates new recreational program without adding recreational loads to the islands themselves. Simultaneously, the infrastructure of the islands is consolidated into interlocking networks ringing the islands, concentrating human traffic into a controlled barrier zone while leaving the interior ecologies cohesive, unbroken, and undisturbed.
This consolidated infrastructure becomes like a nervous system, activating, serving, and protecting both human and ecological activities on the islands. These ganglionic loops of infrastructure accommodate floating dachas for a tourist trip or weekend getaway, off-island space to grow plants used to repopulate damaged sections of island, or floating habitat for endangered fish and bird species.
Solar Nexus integrates the urban conditions of Kyiv with the unique ecological conditions of the Dnieper islands. It is an innovative, amphibious, landscape typology that equally serves, protects, and unifies the citizens and ecologies of Kyiv.

How can we resolve the missions to: 1) add recreational development that will draw and accommodate increased visitation, while2) limiting the amount of visitation to the islands for the sake of environmental protection?
Zoning regulations set a hard limit to the number of visitors the islands can accomodate, which concentrates visitors into two zones of fixed recreation.
To keep the island environments undivided as “a single complex,” all island infrastructure is consolidated into a barrier zone around the outside of the islands, just inside the coastal protective border.
C o n s o l i d a t i n g infrastructure allows for wide programmatic variation in a single strategic move. These channels accommodate everything from hotels & restaurants to walking trails and research stations, depending on requirement.
The border is multiplied and distorted, stretched in places to float in the water, functionally extending the ground plane of the islands without impacting their ecological limits. These floating portions provide recreational services or ecological support as needed.

the self sustained modular structure enables the floating landscapes to be positioned in any corner of the Dnieper corridor
enables public spaces, including swimming, amphitheaters, cafes, scenic views, botanic gardens, foraging, and much more
