Cezary led a top heart and shifted to a club. Adamtook the ace and found a diamond shift, won by de-clarer in hand for a heart ruff (yes, he could have cashedout for minus 500 but he thought he could do better).

Now came a club ruff, a heart ruff and a club ruffwith the 6 – overruffed with the 7. Back came theJ, locking declarer in dummy. A club ruff with the Jsaw declarer exit with the Q to A.

This was the ending with the defense having fourtricks in and East on lead.

The A was the coup de grace. If declarer ruffedlow, West would overruff and play a heart, leaving Eastwith the long trump. If declarer ruffed high, he couldnot prevent the defense from scoring the last two tricks.

If declarer discarded, East would be on lead at trick12 for the trump promotion. Down 800.

South’s double of the opening preempt would notnecessarily be the majority choice, but when Northjumps to 6, it is clear for South to protect his K.Say West leads the J. Declarer wins and runs thehearts. East has to keep K-8-7 and the K. So de-clarer takes a spade finesse and then throws East inwith a club, forcing him to lead away from his K.

Beautiful!! The only problem is that South did NOTcorrect to 6NT, and the contract went down when Eastled a diamond through the king.

A few days ago I showed an excellent defense byDave Treadwell, where he passed throughout, followedsuit to every trick and claimed the last four tricks whenhe was thrown in.

Here is my variation on the same theme. I sat Westand was faced with a vicious problem on the secondround of the auction. My partner was Sharon Osberg.

I guessed to pass and Sharon led a trump. Declarerwon in hand and led a diamond, allowing Sharon towin the A and play a second round of trumps. De-clarer advanced the Q, covered all around, then cashedthe K, ruffed a diamond and led the A.

Had this held, he would have been in great shape. As it was, Sharon ruffed, cashed the A and the Qand led a spade to my jack. I could take my heart win-ners for down three and plus 800.

Well, I had passed throughout and followed suit(except to discard two low hearts on the clubs) andtaken my winners for plus 800. Bridge is an easy game,I suppose.

You may wonder about Shawn’s 1 overcall –probably you would have made a preemptive jump to2 – if you bid at all. Shawn was feeling a bit aggres-sive, so she chose the stronger bid. Mildred’s doubleof 2 showed cards, and Shawn went back to spades. But when West doubled, she changed her mind andwent to clubs.

East cashed two top hearts and switched to hersingleton spade to partner’s jack. West continued withthe A which Mildred ruffed with the 9 but Eastoverruffed. East led another heart which Mildred care-fully ruffed with the jack. Now she knew where thequeen was, and it fell when she cashed her top trumps.

Mildred wasn’t home yet – she still had to handle thediamonds. She finessed the 10 successfully and cashedthe king. Then she pitched a diamond on the K, cameback to her hand by ruffing a spade and claimed.

listen to the fight.“About midway through the second round, Kyle

came out. He had finished the problems and said, ‘Re-lax. I want to hear the fight too’.”

A few years later, Hamman was playing moneybridge at a club. “Some guy always wanted to orga-nize a team game and I was being somewhat critical,so the guy says he and (Paul) Soloway will take on meand the kid (Kyle).

“Kyle comes over to me and says, ‘How much ofthe action can I have?’”

Larsen, says Hamman, “was probably the best-everyoung bridge player.”

At the 1965 NABC in Chicago, Larsen and BonnieBrier won the Teenyear Pairs. Larsen was playingbridge, poker and backgammon -- “a little action,” hesays. “It’s always good for the soul, especially whenyou win.”

He became a Life Master at age 15, at that timethe youngest player ever to earn a gold card. In 1968his team -- Larsen, Erik Paulsen, Peter Pender, HughRoss and Howard Schenken -- won the ReisingerBoard-a-Match Teams. Larsen was 18, the youngestplayer to win a North American team title.

Other titles would follow but there were problems.“I’ve had some addiction problems through the years.I had a big problem with drugs and alcohol,” Larsensaid frankly. “I fought it a lot.”

He spent time at the Betty Ford Clinic in 1988 and1991 “and I’ve been clean and sober since the end of ‘96.”

There was a time, Larsen added, when “clean andsober” was not an option but “at least it seems pos-sible now. My team has been very supportive.”

The Meltzer team debuted in the Spingold Knock-out Teams at the 1999 Summer NABC in San Anto-nio, where they lost in the round of 64 to a Juniorteam: Samuel Ehrlichman, David Gurvich, AriGreenberg and Joe Grue.

Weichsel wasn’t discouraged. “I hand-picked Kyleto be Rose’s partner,” he said. “I thought of otherpeople, but Kyle seemed like a good fit and I’m surenow he was the best choice.

“Kyle has been a friend of mine for many, manyyears. He’s a very easy-going partner. Kyle is a towerof strength. He’s a very good partner for Rose. He’s avery good listener and a very good card player.

“They’re very supportive of one another. Theydon’t get upset at the table.”

Meltzer agrees. “Kyle is such a special partner, Ijust can’t tell you. He is just literally a perfect partner. You get from Kyle 100% support every minute of thetime. He is always at the table, always on his partner’sside.”

Meltzer plays with Larsen in team games and withWeichsel in some pair games. Her favorite? Larsen.“Kyle, by nature, brings out my best game. We feelvery fortunate to have found each other and feel weare a very strong mixed pair.”

Jo Morse, a frequent Larsen partner, is also a fan.“Kyle is one of the best partners,” she said. “He’s sosupportive of his partner that you really want to playyour best. He’s low-key. He’s quiet. He’s just a reallynice guy.”

The really nice guy and his teammates played inthe Reisinger at the 1999 Fall NABC but didn’t makethe first cut.

The following year was different: the team finishedsecond in the Open Swiss Teams at the 2000 SpringNABC in Cincinnati, advanced to the semifinal roundof the United States Bridge Championships and wererunners-up in the Flight A Grand National Teams atthe 2000 Summer NABC in Anaheim -- where theyalso won the Spingold Knockout Teams.

“That (the Spingold win) seemed awfully good,”said Larsen.

The win was just the prelude: the team won therepechage final in the USBC and designation as USAII in the 2001 Bermuda Bowl.

The competition was originally scheduled for Bali,Indonesia and moved to Paris. “We went over there afew days early,” Larsen recalled. “Once we got there,it was like it had been the plan all the time -- it went sosmoothly.”

The team qualified easily and defeated France inthe quarterfinal match and Poland in the semifinal. Nextup: the Norwegian team in the final.

The match wasn’t pretty early on. “We were just

getting crushed,” said Larsen. “We had lost every set.The dirt was just about covering us up, you know?”

Meltzer remembers set five: “We were down about80-something IMPs and Kyle said, ‘Come on, babe, let’s get some of this back.’”

Larsen took up the story: “Norway went down in agrand slam. Chip and Lew stopped in six, which wasenough on that hand. They kind of took the low road.”

That was the turning point as the Meltzer team wenton to claim the Bermuda Bowl.

According to Martel, Larsen is “a terrific partnerand teammate in terms of an upbeat attitude. Youcouldn’t ask for anyone better. He’s always supportivewhen things are going well or not.”

As for the future, “we’re hoping to keep this teamtogether for a long time,” said Larsen.

West led the J and East won his ace to return aspade. Winning with the K, declarer’s only problemlay in trumps.

The percentage play for no losers was to cross todummy and play a heart to his queen, but our declarercrossed to dummy in clubs and led the 10, a seem-ingly irrelevant play.

East rose with the K. Declarer ruffed, then laiddown the A, hoping for the singleton K to appear.

What had happened to cause him to play againstthe odds? Do you think this was a good play?

The key to declarer’s play on this thin 6 slamwas a negative inference he had picked up from thebidding. East, who had passed as dealer, had turned upwith the A and Q — assuming East’s lead of thejack denied the queen.

Declarer’s clever discovery play in diamonds re-vealed that East also held the K. If East had startedwith the K in addition to the A Q and the K, hewould have had 12 good-looking points and would

The scandal led to two major books on the sub-ject. In his book, Alan Truscott listed all the detailsthat convinced many around the world of the guilt ofSchapiro and Reese. In reply, Reese authored a bookthat attempted to explain away a lot of the charges madein the Truscott book.

Reese never again played in world championshipevents, but Schapiro continued to play, reaching theapex of his career with that victory in 1998.

Schapiro was born in Riga, Latvia on August 22,1909. His family emigrated to England at the time ofthe Russian Revolution. He was playing cards formoney by the time he was 10 years old.

His first major tournament was the 1929 WorldAuction Bridge Pairs, where his partner was OswaldJacoby. He won his first world title, the World Pairs, in1932, again with Jacoby.

Schapiro’s mental powers seemed to increase withage – at 90 he claimed he had never played better bridgein his life.

In 1955 he led Great Britain to victory in the Ber-muda Bowl. He won the World Mixed Teams in 1962. Heplayed a major role as Great Britain won European cham-pionships in 1948, 1949, 1954 and 1963. He placed sec-ond in the first World Team Olympiad in 1960 and in theMixed Pairs in 1962. He was victorious in the SundayTimes Invitational Pairs in 1964, and three years later hebecame the newspaper’s bridge columnist.

He won Great Britain’s Gold Cup 11 times – thefirst time in 1945 and the last in 1998.

was non-playing captain of the gold medalist team inthe 1996 World Women’s Olympiad Teams.

He has won 12 North American championships, including all four majors (Vanderbilt, Spingold,Reisinger and Grand National Open Teams), and has“at least at many second-place finishes.”

Wold is a full-time pro whose business interestsinclude several companies in the Houston area. There’sa real estate brokerage firm, a property managementcompany and a pipeline company. In addition, he sup-ports several AIDS foundations and charities. He is afounding sponsor of the Wellness Center, a Houston-area health resource for HIV-positive individuals.

He enjoys tennis, golf, bowling, in-line skating andskiing. He’s also a table tennis player – in fact, he andEddie Kantar will play a match Thursday at the Phoe-nix Civic Plaza. “I used to be a nationally rankedplayer,” said Wold. “I even tried out for the nationalteam but I got frustrated because I just wasn’t goodenough. So I just quit table tennis cold and took upbridge.”

He and Kantar have been practicing and “I thinkthis is going to be a fun match. We’re pretty evenlymatched.”

Wold expressed thanks to all his partners and team-mates with “special gratitude to long-time friends andpartners Paul Soloway, Mike Passell, Mark Lair andGeoff Hampson.”

He also thanked Malcolm Brachman – “many tri-umphs and great times” -- and his life partner, BobMorris, “for all his love and support.”
