Earnings of the Stewart - WarnerCorp., this city, for the quarter endedMarch 31 amounted to $656,010, aftertaxes, equivalent to 50'/2 cents pershare on the 1,298,919 outstandingshares of common stock, C. B. Smith,president, reported yesterday.

The 600,000 shares of the old stockoustanding early in 1929 were ex-changed for 1,200,000 shares of newstock which has been increased by thedisbursement in the past twelve monthsof four 2 per cent. stock dividends,Mr. Smith stated. This accounts forthe outstanding 1,298,919 shares abovementioned.

A cash dividend of 25 cents a sharewas authorized for this quarter, pay-able May 15. This is the sixty-ninthconsecutive regular quarterly cash divi-dend paid by the corporation.

Mr. Smith made the following state-ment with reference to the dividenddeclaration:

"We are quite sure that the stock-holders whose names have been on ourrecords for any considerable length oftime are aware that the board has longpursued a policy of authorizing divi-dends commensurate with earnings, thedistribution being liberal in periods ofgood business and disbursements beingmade at a lower rate when the trendof general business is such that opera-tions yield less profits.

"No exception is being made to thispolicy at this time and the decision topay to the stockholders in the form ofcash dividends on this occasion, one-half of the earnings of the first quar-ter was reached after careful weigh-ing of all facts and conditions and withthe full realization on the part of theboard of its responsibilities to thestockholders. The matter of dividenddisbursement rates is subject to con-sideration at each regular quarterlymeeting and the rate announced fol-lowing any meeting applies to thatquarter only, unless otherwise stated."

MAJESTIC SET PRICES

Effective June 1, all models in theMajestic line will be advanced in price,it was stated by a Grigsby-Grunow Co.executive last week.

Reports insuring the biggest and bestconvention and trade show at AtlanticCity during the week of June 2 werereceived by the RMA board of direc-tors at their final meeting at FrenchLick Springs, Ind., recently. Finalplans for radio week in Atlantic Citywere approved.

Special radio trains and cars fromall parts of the country and also Can-ada, together with advance hotel reser-vations in Atlantic City, assure a biggathering of the radio industry, accord-ing to the report of Chairman Jess B.Hawley of the show committee. Manynew lines and products will be exhibit-ed to the trade for the first time, Mr.Hawley said. Exhibit space reserva-tions already total 35,200 square feet,the largest exhibit ever made in theRMA trade shows, and applicationsstill are coming in.

Chairman Ben G. Erskine, of theRMA convention committee, reportedthat advance reservations for the an-nual RMA banquet, Wednesday night,June 4, in the Grand Ball Room of

the Atlantic City Auditorium, insurethe largest banquet ever held by theassociation. There are accommodationsfor 2,500 at the banquet, which will beserved by Louis Sherry, Inc., of NewYork. A program of nationally knownentertainment stars will be provided bythe R -K -O organization.

At the annual meeting of the RMAmembership in Atlantic City, June 4and 5, a plan for creation of associatemembers of the association with mini-mum annual dues of $200 each, will bepresented, by a decision of the boardof directors. Lester E. Noble of Spring-field, Ohio, chairman of a special com-mittee which considered the question ofcreating a new associate membershipgroup, reported and the board approveda plan to submit to the entire RMAmembership. It is proposed to give theboard of directors of the associationauthority to choose associate membersfrom companies which manufactureproducts widely used in the radio in-

Every big fight in the annals of popu-lar radio has swept dealers' stocks bare-of sets, of tubes, of speakers-andnever before has as much advance no-tice as this been available for the trade.Solely due to THE TALKING MA-CHINE and RADIO WEEKLY's beingin touch with the situation is the newsavailable now.

As matters stand, the mingling ofLithuania's pride and the Terrible Teu-ton will be reported over the NationalBroadcasting Co.'s countrywide hook-up as, it is stated, a "non commercialprogram." That is to say, it will haveno sponsorship other than that of theNational Broadcasting Co. The bout is

the main attraction in a card presentedfor benefit of the Free Milk Fund forBabies, a philanthropy originated byand conducted under the patronage ofMrs. William Randolph Hearst, wife ofthe newspaper publisher. An attend-ance producing well over $1,000,000 isexpected. The Yankee Stadium has ac-commodated as many as 80,000 people.The Free Milk Fund for Babies boxingcard-which in the past has includedsome exceptional matches but never be-fore a heavyweight championship-thisyear will be put before a national, in-deed an international, audience of lis-teners for the first time. Rights forthe German and hence European broad-cast of the battle have been assignedto other persons.

Shocking insinuation against the selling ability of thehome entertainment business is made in a tabulation of re-ports just available for 306 corporations covering their oper-ations for the first quarter of the year. It shows an averagedecline of 18.6 per cent. in their earnings generally but a gainof 86.4 per cent. in amusements.

What is significant in the situation is that entertainmentinvariably increases in demand when general business is atrifle dull. The decline of nearly 20 per cent. in mass opera-tions is not horrendous. Twenty per cent. less business than1929 will still show a comfortable accretion over 1928 receiptsin most lines. It is testimony to the enormous prosperitypowers of the country that so little as one -fifth decrease froma roaring first quarter of a previous year is now exhibited asfact. The lucky escape from more serious and protracted con-sequences in a financial readjustment over four months of lastautumn when "twenty billions in security values were de-stroyed" is something to smile at rather than cry over.

But the radio business and its collateral branches fail torealize that when temporary reverses are in effect, peoplewant to be amused. Whenever times have been dull, the pooland bowling lines have prospered inordinately. So did, in aby -gone day, the saloons. Comparative unemployment fills thevariety shows and moving picture houses, notably at after-noon performances and so being in the nature of plus business.A man or woman in ordinary circumstances upon losing a jobdoes not ponder suicide, as many in radio seem to believe butnever think of doing themselves. In idleness more than inoccupation average human nature seeks the solace of recrea-tion.

Of course, the unit of purchase involved in a radio set isconsiderably more than the cost of a talking movie ticket.There is also the prevalent distaste of the radio -music mer-chant at selling on installments to a buyer who is out of a job.But all people who are temporarily idle are not bad creditrisks, any more than all who have income are good ones.Whether a radio set is a more liquid asset standing in thestore or operating in the home of a decent, thrifty familysome one or all of whose gainful members may be footloosefor the moment, it should not take transcendant merchan-dising genius to decide.

For years there was a bete noir, carefully nourished inthe talking machine field's sales intelligence, that music wasthe last thing to be given up by a family in adverse circum-stances and the last thing to be resumed when economic skiesbecome clearer. The theory was that an installment purchaserkept up his dole as long as he could and, should an opportunityfor re -purchase occur later, postponed it as long as he couldwhile overtaking more essential past -due bills. Possibly thethought was a sound one when unemployment was more cru-cial and extended among numbers of people than it now is.

Commercial and industrial conditions and habits and prac-tices have changed a lot within recent years and to be out ofa job is not the long-term sentence for most that it was once.The jobless plasterer of today is the moneyed hot-dog standproprietor of tomorrow.

A helpful revolution of credit and selling thought amonghome entertainment vendors would incline toward greateracceptance of credit risk among those affected by quiet gen-eral conditions. If the landlord, the garage, the butcher andthe druggist take a chance on families whose income is curbedbut shows likelihood of regaining normal, why should not theradio -music merchant? He has, in fact, a surer creditor posi-tion. The thing he sells is not consumable, carries a fair mark-up and involves less eventual loss under ordinary good judg-ment than a commodity account.

The "amusement business," by which is meant mostlytheatre attendance, is showing great gains because the fellowsin it know by experience that dull times mean more sales forthem. Suppose they cut out several performances a week,fired the big stars and hired bush leaguers, quit advertisingand eliminated free programs 'in the interests of economy,'withheld talking and colored films 'until things pick up' andgenerally comported themselves like men who don't knowwhat it is all about characteristically do? But they don't. Theyput on extra steam when the habit of the public's mind morethan ever craves a good time. That's what the home amuse-ment interests from top to bottom ought to have learned howto do. That's what every home amusement seller ought tobe doing now.

Statistics show that the lines of trade least adverselyaffected just now are the agricultural implement and aircraftindustries, food (except meat), railroad equipment and print-ing and publishing, including advertising. Hundreds of thou-sands of persons are employed and occupied in these greatspecies of undertaking. The lines reported duiiest are auto-mobiles, motor parts, chemicals, copper and coal, householdproducts and office equipment, paper and I .troleum products,tobacco and railroads. Building and real estate, electricalequipment, leather, rayon, public utilities and general machin-ery are not so bad off. Every dealer and retail sales personwho can carry these facts in the back of his head will knowwhether to put on more steam, or less, as he finds by inquirythe nature of the business of each prospect.

$1,300,000 Offered by

Syndicate for AssetsOf United Reproducers

Rochester, N. Y., Monday.Abner J. Stilwell, W. S. Quinlan and

H. I. Shepard, representing a syndi-cate, have offered receivers for theUnited Reproducers Corp., this city,$1,300,000 for the assets of the cor-poration. A good -faith deposit of$125,000 has been made, it is reported.

The parties represented by the syndi-cate managers are all creditors of theUnited Reproducers Corp., except one,whose interest in the syndicate is lessthan fifteen per cent., it is said.

It is believed that the presenting ofthe offer to the Court will bring up thequestion of the sale of assets, and thesyndicate feels that if such a staywere initiated, others contemplatingpurchasing the assets would come for-ward.

Creditors are asked by Mr. Stilwellto urge the receivers to authorize asale.

Thanks for the boost you have given a good cause on Page 7 of the May 14issue of the "Weekly" by publishing the letter of Mr. C. A. Van Doren. Of allthe unnecessary waste of money in connection with radio matters, my idea of themost unnecessary is a big blow-out at the time of the Trade Show. Those of uswho have given this matter considerable thought for a number of years are ofthe unanimous opinion that an excessive expenditure of money means that themanufacturer making the expenditure finds it necessary to attract attention tohis line through other means than good merchandise and distribution methods. Itreally looks like a smoke screen to cover up defects. We arc further firmly ofthe belief that such a smoke screen does not fool the distributor for long.

You may be interested in knowing that we have again this year taken a verydefinite public stand on this matter. I have sent two letters to the membership,one of which asked them to curtail expenses in connection with the Trade Showexhibition, and demonstration, and the other to curtail entertainment. While wehave no desire to restrict suitable and legitimate entertainment, excess that canhe called nothing but a debauch is very repulsive to the industry as a whole.

UP -STATE MERCHANT ASKS INDUSTRY FOR`SALES HELP' STATING TELEVISION SITUATION

Your timely article on television which appears in this week's TALKINGMACHINE and RADIO WEEKLY struck a responsive chord in me. Among thegreatest creators of resistance to radio sales are newspaper articles and rumorson inventions relating to television. These articles and rumors are always inter-preted to mean that television instruments will be part of the coming season'sradio receivers. The result tempted to wait untilthey can have television with their radios.

Manufacturers of radio would earn the undying gratitude of the retail tradeand would enhance their own business if they set about to spread the facts ofthe present status of television as a medium of home entertainment. I feel thetime is ripe to suggest a means of accomplishing the education of the public.

There is little doubt but what many exhibitors are scratching their headson how to outdo the other fellow in the way of entertainment and souvenirs atthe coming show at Atlantic City. A souvenir to be kept would be an articlesetting forth the reasons why television is not yet practical as a home enter-tainer. Such writeup could be framed so that the dealer could take it home andtack it up in his store. There the buying public could read it and as a resultwould more readily buy that which the trade has to offer. Copies of such sug-gested material should be mailed to every dealer who does not attend the show.

Concerted action is in line. I hope your publication and every other tradepaper will work toward the carrying out of public education on television's pres-ent status.

national convention of Brunswick dis-tributors to be held May 24th to May29th, according to A. A. Trostler, salesmanager of the radio and Panatropedivision of the Brunswick-Balke-Col-lender Co.

Representatives from the sixty pointsof Brunswick distribution will convenein Dubuque, Iowa, on Saturday morn-ing, May 24. After a morning spent ininspecting the cabinet plants, luncheonwill be served at the factory.

Remaining in the factories until eve-ning the party will leave in a specialtrain for Chicago. The train will bemet the following morning by cabswhich will transport the party to thedocks where a privately chartered boatwill carry the party to Muskegon,Mich., arriving there late Sunday after-noon.

Monday will be spent looking overthe Brunswick properties in Muskegonwhich include factories for the manu-facture of the Brunswick radio chassis,and records. In the evening a hugebanquet is planned to be followed Tues-day with a business convention for thepresentation of sales and advertisingplans.

Among the speakers at this meetingwill be R. W. Jackson, general man-ager of the Brunswick company; A. A.Trostler and Paul S. Ellison, advertis-ing manager.

On Wednesday morning, May 28, theparty will leave in a special train forthe R. M. A. convention in AtlanticCity where on the evening of the fol-lowing day a Warner Bros. executivedinner will be held with H. M. Warner,president of that corporation, as theprincipal speaker.

This will be the first national meet-ing of Brunswick distributors since theBrunswick -Warner merger, and accord-ing to Mr. Trostler, no effort is beingspared to make this an event whoseinfluence will lend impetus to what heanticipates to be a record year for thosehandling Brunswick merchandise.

The distributors will be guests of thecompany from their arrival at Dubuqueuntil the day after their arrival atAtlantic City.

A series of meetings for Colonial job-bers and prospective jobbers is beingheld in this city, and will continue untilthe opening of the RMA trade show,under the auspices of Colonial RadioCorp., here. The meetings are beingheld at the Seneca Hotel, where thenew Colonial line is on display.

The setswill include the latest developments ofthe art, and it is not the intention ofthe company to enter the competitivemarket on a price appeal.

With experience in manufacturingand merchandising musical instrumentsfor almost three-quarters of a century,with more than ample finances, with amanufacturing and sales departmentthat recognizes the possibilities in radiofor years to come, as well as the neces-sities of the immediate present, andwith an experienced radio engineeringpersonnel, the new company should soonoccupy a position of outstanding im-portance in the industry, it is said.

At Cost of $1,500,000Chicago, .Ill., Thursday.

The main operating plants of theMajestic Household Utilities Corp., thiscity, were constructed some time agoadjacent to the Dickens avenue andArmitage avenue factories of theGrigsby-Grunow Co. here.

These plants were constructed at a.cost of considerably over $1,500,000,and will provide adequate space for themanufacture of several thousand Ma-jestic refrigerators daily, and for thehousing of the necessary machinery andtaking care of more than 5,000 em-ployees who will be needed as soon asactive production begins.

According to unauthorized and er-roneous reports which found their wayinto the public prints several days ago,it was stated that a $100,000 ware-house plant, which has recently beenenlarged, was to be the main MajesticHousehold Utilities factory, and that100 persons would be employed. This,officials of the company said, is entirelyerroneous.

stay," said Grant Layng, sales mana-ger of the 20th Century Radio Corp.,Crosley metropolitan distributor, in aninterview last week. "Crosley's new-est product, the `Roamio,' has now beenon the market about a month, and byits daily increasing sales has proved tobe one of the staple items in a stapleline.

"The average radio store, during themonths of May and June, is far frombeing a hotbed for activity. Regard-less of how good a dealer's propositionmay be, or how fine his merchandisein appearance, if he only had threepeople a day walking into his store, hischances of selling are in proportion tothe daily number of callers. If throughsome promotional activity he can in-crease his daily number of prospects,and get thirty to fifty people in hisstore, his chances for selling themsomething are materially improved.

"The 20th Century Radio Corp. isarranging to provide the dealer witha list of automobile owners and themakes of cars that they have, in anygiven territory. Through a system ofcircular letters which we have devel-oped, it is possible for the radio dealerto contact an immediate group of pros-pects, who as automobile owners un-questionably have some means and whohave probably not been customers ofthe radio dealer. In other words, itopens up to the radio store, a new fieldof prospects.

"Although, all the dealers are look-ing forward to the refrigerator asbeing the great life saver, we believethat we are very conservative in say-ing that there will be nothing avail-able in the line of refrigerators in suf-ficient quantities until at least July andAugust. That in, the meantime, theradio dealer must live and if he willlet the future take care of itself andworry about the immediate present, hewill accomplish a great deal more thansimply sitting tight and feeling thatthe refrigerator is going to be the 'Potof Gold at the End of the Rainbow'."

At the first meeting of creditors ofthe Buckingham Radio Corp., this city,Frank McKey was appointed trusteeunder bond of $60,000 and will proceedwith the administration of the estateunder order of the court. Mr. McKeystated today that the cash in his pos-session amounts to approximately $63.-000 and that he hopes to realize at leastan additional $10,000 from accounts re-ceivable and notes due the estate. Theliabilities of the Buckingham companyare scheduled at $273,081.

with the radio -music industry for manyyears, has been appointed eastern dis-trict sales manager for the Johnson -burg Radio Corp., this city, manufac-turer of JRC radio tubes. Mr. Haring's activities in the radio -music field date back to 1919, when hejoined the Columbia Graphophone Co.in the Baltimore territory. His suc-cess in this position brought him thebranch management of the company'sNew Haven office, and he was then pro-moted to the management of the branchat Buffalo, N. Y. His activities in thisposition were recognized by his appoint-ment as eastern regional representa-tive, giving him supervision over allColumbia branches east of Chicago.

In 1923 Mr. Haring joined the Son-ora Phonograph Co. as eastern districtsales manager, and in 1928 was appoint-ed assistant general sales manager ofthe company, becoming general salesmanager in October, 1929. On Febru-ary 1, 1930, he resigned from the Son-ora organization to become associategeneral manager of the New York zonefor the General Motors Radio Corp.resigning from this position to becomeeastern representative for JRC tubes.

Mr. Haring's past experience wellqualifies him for his new activities.Mr. Von Der Leith was also formerlyidentified with the Sonora PhonographCo. and was with the General MotorsRadio Corp. since February 1.

Washington, D. C., Wednesday.

An anti-trust suit was instituted yes-terday by the government in the Fed-eral court at Wilmington, Del., to test"the legality of the arrangements ex-isting between the Radio Corp. ofAmerica, General Electric Co., Westing-house Electric & Manufacturing Co.,American Telephone & Telephone Co.,and six other corporations." The suitwas started following demands fromthe Senate and from other quarters.

Attorney General Mitchell announcedthe filing of the suit under the Sher-man anti-trust law. According to theDepartment of Justice, the other com-panies involved in the suit are thWestern Electric Co., RCA Photophone,Inc., RCA Radiotron, Inc., RCA VictorCo., Inc., General Motors Radio Corp.and the General Motors Corp.

Following receipt of informationthat suit had been brought by thegovernment against the Radio Corpor-ation, Owen Young, chairman of theexecutive committee of the Radio .Cor-poration of America, made the follow-ing statement:

"The Radio Corporation of Americawelcomes the suit of the governmentof the United States to test the validityof its organization which has now ex-isted for more than ten years, and inevery step of which the Governmenthas been advised.

"In 1919 when the company was or-ganized, no one concern in the countryhad the necessary patents to enable itto develop the radio art and create abusiness. Each of several had some, andeach could block the other. The purposeof the organization of the Radio Corp.was to release the art by groupingpatents enough in one place so as toenable sending stations to be createdand receiving sets to be built. Thatthis was accomplished is shown by therapid development of the radio busi-ness.

"In order to promote competition inthe art and in the business, and toavoid patent litigation which wouldhave prevented development, licenseshave been issued to thirty-four concernsto make radio sets and to fourteenconcerns to make radio tubes. Betweenthem, as the public knows, competitionis severe. These licenses provide aroyalty payment, which was intendedto represent the fair contribution ofthe licensees to the expenses of theresearch and the cost of the originalpatents. It was intended to be lessthan the royalty payment would havebeen had the patents remained in scat-tered hands. All these licensees arelicensed under all new inventions andhave the benefits of all existing re-search of the Radio Corporation and itsassociated companies in the field whichthe licenses cover.

"This arrangement seemed wise. Asa result an industry was born, thous-ands of people were employed, and mil -

Louis Cohen, of Piser & Co., per-emptorily denied the story last week,stating that Charles Buchner, managerof the Piser music -radio interests forthe past fifteen years, is still in fullcharge and going strong. "I cannotunderstand how any such report couldreach 'The Trade's Only Weekly'," saidMr. Cohen, "for Mr. Buchner's recordentitles him to the long-distance cham-pionship in radio buying, as there arefew if any other managers with de-partments as large as ours who haveheld the post uninterruptedly over 15years. In fact, there are few men inany branch of the radio business whohave held the same jobs one -fifth thatlong. Mr. Buchner is proud of hisrecord and we are proud of Mr. Buch-ner and we would like the radio indus-try to know it."

Revised classification on radio setsand radio - phonograph combinationfreight rates, which has been under dis-cussion between the official classifica-tion committee and the traffic commit-tees of the Radio Wholesalers Associa-tion and the Radio ManufacturersAssociation for more than a year, willbecome effective June 15, Francis E.Stern, this city, chairman of the trafficcommittee of the R. W. A., reportedtoday. Mr. Stern is head of Stern &Co., Inc., local distributing firm.

An agreement was reached in Octo-ber with the official classification com-mittee to make these changes, but itwas impossible to include these changesin the supplement to classification No.5, Mr. Stern declared.

This agreement will result in a con-siderable saving to manufacturers anddistributors in every section of thecountry.

The Van Ashe Radio Co., a pioneerradio distributing organization of thiscity, has been appointed exclusive dis-tributor in this territory for the Cros -ley Radio Corp., Cincinnati. The VanAshe company recently moved intoelaborate headquarters at Tenth andWalnut streets.

Van Ashe dealers in this territoryare unusually enthusiastic over the newCrosley "Companionship" line, whichincludes the Buddy, Chum, Playmate,Comrade, Crony and Partner. Screengrid tubes are used in each of thesemodels. Battery operated sets are alsomade by Crosley.

W. W. Van Sickle, president of theVan Ashe Radio Co., reports that thesale of the Roamio, the Crosley auto-mobile set, has been on the increaseduring the past two weeks. The VanAshe company plans to make installa-tions of the Roamio for dealers whoare not equipped to do this work. Offi-cial Roamio installation stations will beopened in various parts of the State.

J. H. Burke, president of the J. H.Burke Co., distributor of Atwater Kentradios, recently returned from a threemonths' visit to Europe. The manyfriends who have greeted him since hisreturn have expressed an interest inradio conditions across the pond andhe has therefore made the followingobservations for the readers of "TheTrade's Only Weekly."

According to Mr. Burke, we are farahead of European countries in themany phrases of the radio art. Ourapparatus in construction, appearanceand performance are not to be com-pared with those across the sea. Thiscondition can be attributed to the taximposed on receiving sets in most coun-tries, making the cost of the set toohigh for the average individual. Theclass of programs is also far inferiorto ours.

Crystal sets with ear -phones are stillthe most popular set, due to the absenceof a tax, and to the fact that they areeasy and inexpensive to build. Theelectric set, using screen grid tubes anddynamic speaker, is found in very fewhomes. Though European programs aregradually improving, they have not asyet attained the high quality education-al and entertaining value of Americanbroadcasts.

Mr. Burke says he had a most pleas-ant and interesting trip, but is glad toget back. He is more enthusiastic thanever over the future of radio, particu-larly the Atwater Kent products.

Mr. Ferry is one of the pioneers in

radio merchandising, and is in his sev-enth year with the May interests. Heformerly sold Philco automobile batter-ies and automotive accessories, withD. W. May, Inc., at Newark, and grad-uated into radio when the May com-pany entered the radio field about sixyears ago. Shortly after the first ofthis year, the May companies became100 per cent. Philco, adding the Philcoscreen -grid -plus line to the standard.The firm is now handling the Philcoline for northern New Jersey, Man-hattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island andthree counties in Massachusetts, adja-cent to Boston.

A selling -showmanship feat to Mr.Férry's credit is the inauguration ofradio merchandising by the jobberthrough theatres. He pioneered the firstradio six years ago by theatre tie-upand it was with the Fox moving picturetheatre in Newark, placing the radiodisplay in the theatre lobby and givingaway a radio set to the theatre pa-trons. He followed this by putting dis-plays in 350 other theatres in NewJersey, the campaign being the fore-runner of the present Philco Para-mount picture tie-up and numerousother like exploitations in Publix-Para-mount theatres and also in Brooklyn.

Prior to his advent into New York,Mr. Ferry was sales manager of boththe D. W. May, Inc., and May RadioCorp. of Newark, and handled five linesof radios at one time. His friends inthe trade are legion and to all of whomhe is "Walter."

SHOW GAIN OVER 1929;

RECORD SEASON SEENThe belief that the sale of quality

radio has suffered during the generaldepression appears to be shattered onceand for all, according to reports givenout last week by Herbert A. Brennan,of Cross -Brennan, Inc., Eastern districtsales representative for the Stromberg-Carlton Telephone Manufacturing Co.,Rochester. Mr. Brennan's statementthis week reveals that Gross -Brennansales for the first quarter of 1930 showan increase of 76 per cent. over thecorresponding period in 1929.

"The figures at hand show that aperiod of depression and unemploymentsuch as many industries have experi-enced in the past few months do notretard the sale of quality radio," saidSir. Brennan.

Stromberg-Carlson's figures for Jan-uary, 1930, show an increase in volumeof SO per cent., according to 11ír. Bren-nan. February and March show in-creases of 40 per cent. and 30 per cent.respectively, which is very satisfactory,considering the fact that the radio busi-ness invariably reaches its peak volumeshortly after Christmas. The figuresshow an average increase of 50 percent. over last year's first quarter.

"It appears perfectly definite fromthe figures of the last seven monthsthat the buying public appreciates theentertainment and educational value ofradio more today than ever before,"said Mr. Brennan. "The buyer realizesthat in purchasing quality radio appa-ratus he is making a permanent in-vestment and guaranteed value, over aperiod of years of a modern high gradeset, that is boosting the sales of qual-ity radio in the face of the depressionwhich many lines of business are ex-periencing. I believe that with thewealth of broadcast entertainment nowavailable, and with the idea of perma-nent value firmly entrenched in thebuyer's mind, that the average man ofthe street invests in radio not as aluxury, but as necessary entertainmentand diversion."

At the annual food show and domes-tic science school held at Washington,Pa., the Ben Reynold Co. music mer-chants, furnished an Edison combina-tion radio to supply music for theaudience.

Word was received here of the deathof John F. Renner, one time presidentof the Ohio Piano Merchants' Associa-tion, at Sandusky, Ohio. He was 59years of age and was widely known inOhio and western Pennsylvania. Mr.Renner was a musician of exceptionalability and retired from active busi-ness about a year ago.

The Tri-State Radio Co. was grant-ed a West Virginia charter with acapital of $50,000. The incorporatorsare E. T. Edmonds, Sr., E. T. Edmonds,Jr., Gertrude Edmonds, Mabel G. Ed-monds, and F. F. Tomkies, all of Hunt-ington, W. Va., where the offices arelocated.

In the court of common pleas atHarrisburg a jury returned a verdict infavor of the Lykens Music Storeagainst Robert Zimmerman, for $266.-00. The sum was due on a radio soldat $356. Ninety dollars was paid onaccount and then the buyer refused topay, claiming that the radio was un-satisfactory. The jury did not givecredence to his story on the stand.

The Turner Radio Shop has beenopened at 34 South avenue, Bradford,Pa., under the management of T. V.Held. The firm operates similar storesin Warren, Pa., and Jamestown, N. Y.The Majestic and Stromberg-Carlsonradios are handled.

The Berger Hospital at Circleville,Ohio, has been given a contribution of$350 by Ted Lewis, band leader andentertainer, to be used in furnishinga memorial room in the hospital inmemory of his father.

Majestic radio dealers to the numberof about a hundred from northern WestVirginia points were guests at a dinnerand business conference at the Fair-mont Hotel, Fairmont, West Va. Thecolotura tone test of the Majestic radiowas given and the new Majestic mer-chandising plans were also presented.

W. Harry Hamilton, general managerof the C. C. Mellor Co., Steinway,Victor and Philco dealers, left forChula Vista, Calif., his former homewhere he will spend several weeks.

Arthur E. Winter, well known headof the Winter Music House of Altoona,Pa., Steinway and Victor dealers, waselected governor of the 34th districtof the International Rotary Clubs atthe annual convention at Hagerstown,Md.. The district includes the Rotaryclubs in Pennsylvania, Maryland, WestVirginia and District of Columbia.

Harold Goldstein has been appointeda distributor for the Colin B. KennedyCorp. with general offices in Pittsburgh.Mr. Goldstein is widely known in radiocircles in the Tri-state territory. Hewas a recent visitor to the Kennedyfactory at South Bend, Ind. Mr. Gold-stein predicts a very satisfactory sea-son for the Kennedy line in this section.

John Schoenberger, aged 73, a direc-tor of the Lechner & Schoenberger Co.,music merchants of Pittsburg, died re-cently. He was one of the foundersof the firm in 1881 and a director since1904. He was president of the NewJerusalem (Swedenborgian) churchfor many years. His widow, eight sonsand a brother, survive. The latter isJacob Schoenberger, president of thecompany.

The Westinghouse Electric & Manu-facturing Supply Co., formerly H. C.Roberts Electric Supply Co., Eleventhand Race streets, is preparing for agood season on the new Westinghousesets. Manager J. H. Fisher is lookingfor a broad distribution of these re-ceivers through dealers. The line willhe on exhibit at the RMA Trade Show.

The General Electric Supply Corp.,with distributing headquarters at 429N. Seventh street, will introduce thenew General Electric radios in August.

R. E. Tongue & Brothers, Inc., Alleg-heny and Amber streets, have beenenjoying an active demand for the fullline of Crosley radios for automobiles,motor boats and for household pur-poses. The "Roamio," for automobileinstallation, has been going over withexceptional results. The firm is mak-ing heavy shipments of the Crosley toprominent manufacturers of yachts andmotor boats in this location. There are

many such concerns along the waterfronts of the Delaware River.

There arrived in Philadelphia recent-ly the first carload of the Norge re-frigerators to be shipped here to thedistributors, Trilling & Montague, atSeventh and Arch streets. These al-ready have been disposed of to dealers,and more are due shortly to take careof unfilled orders. David M. Trilling,of the local firm, visited the NorgeDivision of the Borg-Warner Corp. inDetroit recently and was shown overthe factory by President Howard E.Blood, Advertising Manager and SalesPromotion Director A. H. Taylor, andSales Manager Dinsmore, and wasmuch impressed with the precision andperfect engineering of the Norge. An air derby was alsoheld as part of the opening ceremonies,and this was also announced to andfollowed by the crowds over the A -Kset.

The Kieselhorst Company, which hasbeen operated here for 51 years by theKieselhorst family and is said to beSt. Louis' oldest musical instrumentfirm, plans to discontinue its businessbefore July 19, when its lease at 1007Olive street will expire.

The business was established in1879 at 10 South Fourth street by thelate John A. Kieselhorst, father of thecompany's present officers. The elderKieselhorst was well known in musiccircles and was considered the city'sbest flute player. His business pros-pered.

That was when pianos were calledpiano -fortes and most of Kieselhorst'strade was in old-time square pianos,reed organs, harmonicas, fiddles andSwiss music boxes. In nearly everyparlor, together with the family album,the wood stove, the sofa and the kero-sine lamp, was the center of familylife, the piano. In those days, "TheMaiden's Prayer," "Listen to the Mock-ing Bird" and "O, Susanna" were stillpopular.

In 1891 Edwin Kieselhorst, then ayouth of 17, entered the business as anodd job man. The square piano wasgoing, player pianos of the cabinettype, and three-legged grand pianoswere coming in. The business wassuccessful. Then in 1896 the elderKieselhorst died.

Edwin Kieselhorst continued. He soldthousands of music rolls of "DaisyBell" (You'll look sweet upon the seatof a bicycle built for two), and "TheBand Played On" while Casey waltzedwith a strawberry blond) and "Afterthe Ball," the first great hit of moderntimes.

In 1808 the firm was incorporatedand in 1901) Henry Kieselhorst cameinto the business. Those were the daysof the "coon song," and "Under theOld Apple Tree."

Then came the. movies, the automo-bile, the war, the talking machine andthe radio. Meanwhile, the Kieselhorstcompany had grown from "almostnothing" to a corporation capitalizedat $150,000.

But the Kicselhorsts are getting out.Edwin Kieselhorst's three sons are in orwill enter some other business. Thetwo brothers have invested their moneyelsewhere.

J. J. Horan & Son, Oriel building,has been appointed factory representa-tives for the Gulbransen Co., of Chi-cago, makers of radio sets.

During the recent showing of thetalking picture "High Society Blues"at the Fox theatre an Atwater Kentscreen grid radio stationed in the lobbybroadcast musical numbers from theshow. According to Tom Kopplin, ad-vertising manager of the Brown & HallSupply Co., Atwater Kent distributors,the display proved effective from aninterest and publicity creating stand-point.

Lew Harris has joined the E. J.Straus Co.'s sales force, to travel theIllinois territory for that firm. The

change was made by Harris followingthe establishment of the Sparton lineof radio sets with the Straus companyas exclusive distributor in the St. Louisdistrict. Gene Straus, president of thecompany, has announced that in keep-ing with the general interest in auto-mobile radio reception his company hastaken on a line of auto radios knownas the O -E line.

The Van Ashe Radio Co., pioneerradio wholesale distributors of St.Louis, has been appointed exclusive dis-tributors in this territory for the Cros -ley Radio Corp. The Van-Ashe Co.recently moved into its new building atthe northeast corner of Tenth and Wal-nut streets, where it has greatly en-larged facilities, and now offers theradio dealer an unusually completewholesale service. One of the newCrosley models now in production isthe "Roamio" automobile radio. Thisset can be installed on almost any car.Van Ashe Radio Co. plans to make in-stallation of these sets for the dealerwho is not equipped, but in additionintends to appoint official installationstations in different parts of the terri-tory. The service department of thecompany will take over the repair ser-vice on Crosley apparatus and has beenenlarged. The latest type of serviceequipment is being installed.

W. E. Fuetterer Co., 2123 Locuststreet, becomes the St. Louis represen-tative for the Sentinel line of radiosets produced by the United Air Clean-er Co., of Chicago. The deal was con-summated through the offices of Mel-ville S. Cohen, factory representativeof the United Air Cleaner Co., of Chi-cago who has St. Louis offices at 3117Washington avenue. -N. B. Co.,this city, who states that many havelearned by unpleasant experience thatthere is a great deal of difference inthe quality of such speakers of differ-ent make False economy must not bepracticed in the construction of such aloud speaker, he maintains, if best re-sults are to be obtained.

"The electro -dynamic," Mr. Mansonstates, "requires more careful designand an almost lavish expense in manu-facture if it is to fulfill its real mis-sion-the production of abundant vol-ume and the correct reproduction of thelower three and a half octaves of thepiano scale."

Thoughts of the talking machine andradio dealers are now turning towardbeach sets. This is a business of grow-ing volume here. With the opening ofthe Buffalo - Fort Erie, Ontario, peacebridge and the sale of hundreds of lotson the Canadian side of the border forSummer home development, opportunityis afforded to sell literally thousandsof battery sets for beaches as most ofthe homes in the beginning are notwired for electricity.

There also is a fine outlook for talk-ing machine portables and dealers arecultivating this trade to the greatestpossible extent with prospects of anexcellent year.

While the season which has justclosed was disappointing in many re-spects, because of depressed industrialconditions, dealers as a rule have verysmall inventories and are not in theserious condition which would havebeen the result of overstocking. Thetrade here is looking forward to ex-cellent business in the Autumn andmany expect to finish 1930 with actualgains over the sales of 1929, when the

The Artizan Factories, Inc., of NorthTonawanda, manufacturers of musicalinstruments, filed a voluntary bank-ruptcy petition in the U. S. DistrictCourt at Buffalo. Liabilities were list-ed at $74,000 and assets were estimatedat $57,000. Milton E. Praker of NorthTonawanda was appointed trustee forthe bankrupt.

"Majesto" has been here for severalweeks appearing in stores dealing inMajestic sets and has attracted muchattention by his unusual mental tele-pathy act.

Another Majestic promotion in thisdistrict was the presentation at theopening game of the InternationalLeague baseball season here of a com-plete set to the first member of theBuffalo team making a home run. Theset was presented ton the field to 011ieTucker, Bison outfielder in the presenceof more than 15,000 fans.

Norman Wesley Williams, 60 yearsold, proprietor of a large radio store inNorth Main street, Niagara Falls, diedin a hospital in that city recently fol-lowing an illness of three weeks. Hehad been engaged in musical instru-ment and radio retailing in NiagaraFalls for nearly 25 years.

Hhe H. L. Conrath Co. has added aradio department to its big store inWest Ninth street, Erie, Pa., and isfeaturing Atwater Kent sets in a fineopening display there.

William E. Hill has been appointedsales promotion manager of the radiodepartment of the Clawson & WilsonCo., Buffalo wholesale house which re-cently became district distributor forKennedy radio. He will work in con-junction with Harry Shaprow, salesmanager.

The C. E. Campbell Music Co., ofNiagara Falls, filed a bankruptcy peti-tion in the U. S. District Court at Buf-falo in which it shows liabilities of$7,400 and assets of $4,100. The com-pany has been engaged in a generalmusical instrument and radio businessfor several years.

Chester E. Campbell has been ap-pointed manager of the radio depart-ment of the Rohrer Electric Co. ofNiagara Falls. RCA and Majestic setsare being featured in the new storewhich this company has just opened inthat city.

National music week was observedin the city schools as well as in thesuburban schools with music festivals,concerts and operettas. Primary andintermediate grades assisted by gradeorchestras and harmonica bands pre-sented versions of well known composi-tions. In the high schools music clubs,orchestras, glee clubs and the choralclubs conducted festivals. In all of theseevents music merchants had a part byassisting in popularizing the eventsthrough store, window and newspaperpublicity and by providing assistantsfor the successful presentation of theprograms.

On account of the continued warmweather here dealers have carried onpromotion campaigns on portableswith marked success. Many believethat the small machines offer thephonograph merchant the best oppor-tunity now for increasing record sales.Radio set sales are going forward withthe assistance of low price and cleanup merchandise. It appears that near-ly everyone,er, jobber and retailer is determined togo to the RMA Trade Show at AtlanticCity free from last year's sets and ina position to take advantage of the newmodels and give them wholeheartedsupport.

Electric refrigeration will play alarger part than ever before in thesales plans of the music merchant thissummer. At least one-half of the re-tailers in this market will deal in elec-tric refrigerators during the next sev-eral months, it is said.

Almost one-halfof the large radio section and recorddivision will be devoted to refrigerators.Listening booths have been moved tothe rear of the store and the music rolldepartment consolidated with the rec-ord section in order to give as muchspace as possible to the new depart-ment. The models will be upon thefloors in a few days and then an ag-gressive promotion campaign will belaunched to draw the attention of theGreene company's following to a radi-cal departure in the policy of the house.Portables are shown to attract atten-tion to the call of the outdoors. Tied -in with this portable drive is the recordexchange of Victor discs. The follow-ing post card mailed to the store's mail-ing list produced a good volume ofsales, Miss Helen Baumgardner re-ported:

"What has spring house- cleaninggot to do with getting new Victor rec-ords free? Just this: If, in goingthrough your household this month,you come upon some old Victor records,bring them to us and we will allow you7,I! cents credit for every one. We willaccept all your old Victor records, re-gardless of age, size or type and willgive you any black label Victor recordyou choose in exchange for every tenof your old ones. The only conditionsare these: We will accept Victor rec-ords only. The records must be un-broken and must be defaced by a largeX scratched across the lable. The offerremains in effect until May 31.

At the Lion Store Music Rooms andRadio Shoppe, May sales are in pro-gress. Manager Lawson S. Talbertstated radio sales in volume are abovelast year and cost of sales has beenreduced, mainly through the use ofnewspaper space and exploitation ofmerchandise of the type that people canafford to purchase at this time. Theoutside sales force has been materiallyreduced. A recent drive on portablesproduced sales which in turn assistedrecord business. According to MissZoa Osborn, "Cottage for Sale," "Danc-ing to Save Your Sole" and "Home isHeaven and Heaven is Home" are lead-ing records here.

The Cleveland Talking Machine Co.was host recently to the Victor recordgirls of the city at a dinner at the Com-modore Perry Hotel. Norman H. Cook,in charge of the local branch of thecompany, looked after arrangements.The purpose of the dinner was to in-troduce Miss Fleming of the Victor Co.to the girls who are on the record fir-ing line. Seated at the table were MissFleming, Miss Mary Bauman, of Grin-nell Bros.; Helen Baumgardner, of theJ. W. Herbert Grinnell, manager of theradio and phonograph departments ofGrinnell Bros., reports radio sales asbeing nominal. The Victor line is fea-tured. He believes Summer talking ma-chine sales will be much improved. Inaddition to portables, the store will fea-ture other models suitable for Summercottages and home dancing. Youngfolks enjoy dancing and nothing is quiteso satisfactory to them as the phono-graph. They do not hesitate to buyrecords and machines and other thingswhich will add to their pleasure andare not given to the desire for moneyas are their elders. Therefore, the ap-peal this Summer will be directed toyoung folks here, Mr. Grinnell stated.Radio volume, however, will not be neg-lected, but the appeal here will be di-rected to the family man and to theolder members of the household.

The Harold G. Miehls Co. recentlypresented the new General Motors radioto the citizens of the city. HaroldMiehls, head of the house, stated thathis company will have the downtownagency for the line. Eventually therewill be five franchises awarded to deal-ers in Toledo, each will have exclusiveterritory. Much interest was manifest-ed by people attracted to the store bythe advertising, both local and national,and a few sales were recorded.

Entire CeCo Line to Be

Exhibited at RMA Showl'rovidence, R. I., Friday.

Edward T. Maharin, vice-presidentin charge of sales of the CeCo Manu-facturing Co., stated today that theCeCo exhibit at the RMA trade showin Atlantic City will comprise the entireCeCo line.

"Each tube in the CeCo line," hestated, "has been redesigned during thepast year. New improvements havebeen made in construction details.Many of these improvements are ex-clusive CeCo features. The new lineof CeCo tubes has unusual, uniformcharacteristics. Improved constructiongives them mechanical strength un-equalled anywhere before."

The CeCo exhibit will occupy spacesin booths 11 and 12 in section B; alsoin demonstration room 23 in sectionC -C. Offices will be maintained in theHotel Ambassador.

Included in the CeCo exhibit will bea detailed showing of the various stagesentering into the development of theAC pentode, from its beginning to itsfully developed use in a modern pen-tode set. The new CoCo power pentodealso will be shown as will the 866 half -wave mercury vapor rectifier.

Announcement of the appointment ofthe Kruse Radio, Inc., here as Indianadistributor for RCA Radiolas and Radi-otron tubes has been made by C. J.Kruse, president of the organization.The company is one of the oldest radioretail and wholesale companies in theState. For the last eight years it hasbeen distributor for Crosley and Amradradio sets. Several branches will beopened throughout the State and thesales force will be augmented.

J. II. Sunderlin, formerly of Elk-hart, but for some time president ofthe Goodlin Radio Co., Inc., South Bend,has disposed of his interests in thatcompany and will become associatedwith his father, Fred A. Sunderlin, asmanager of the Radio Equipment Co.,of South Bend. The latter company isdistributor in that section for Majesticradios. The father also lived here sometime, but has been connected with radiopractically since the inception of theindustry.

Thelast qualification he places specialemphasis on, because he firmly believesthat to sell well a set should be welladvertised; and the manufacturer mustbe financially able to care for this endto the limit.

R. P. Van Zile, formerly districtmanager for F. A. D. Andrea, Inc.,but who will handle radio sales for theGeneral Electric Co. in this territory,has already taken temporary head-quarters in the General Electric Co.'soffices here, being domiciled at the mer-chandising department at Suite 1033,230 S. Otto N. Frankfort, radio sales mana-ger for the Story & Clark Piano Co.,spent a day or so this week at the fac-tory in Grand Haven, Mich. He ex-

pects the new Story & Clark receiversto cut a big swath just as soon as theyare introduced to the public. Announce-ments, he says, are going out to thetrade this week, and new distributorswill be named shortly.

L. J. Johnson, president of the Kim-berly Radio Corp., will take seven ofhis men to the Brunswick factory con-vention at Des Moines, but only he andMr. Bradley will complete the tour toMuskegon and on to Atlantic City. Mr.Johnson is well pleased with the newmerchandise he is handling and espe-cially with the manner in which theBrunswick organization, through Ar-thur Trostler, is lending its assistance.

The Dearborn Radio Supply Co. hasleased store space at 220 West Madisonstreet and will shortly open up therefor business, handling a general lineof radios and supplies.

T. L. Clarkson, district manager forthe Triad Manufacturing Co., of Paw-tucket, R. I., is out hustling for busi-ness these days, and his activities keephim out of his office most of the timevisiting the trade in Chicago and near-by cities. -ALEXANDER.

Funeral services were held on Thurs-day morning for Frank Roberts, formany years secretary of the BlackmanTalking Machine Co., New York, andwell known in the industry, who passedaway the day previous at his home inJamaica, L. I., at the age of 80.

Mr. Roberts was a member and PastGrand of Mechanics' Lodge No. 113 ofthe Independent Orders of Odd Fellowsof New York, and of the Royal Arca-num, Council No. 1229, of Rutherford,N. J.

The deceased is survived by hiswidow, Clara Roberts.

dustry and which are closely affiliatedto the industry but not complete radioproducts. The present RMA member-ship is now slightly under 250, accord-ing to the report of Nat P. Bloom, ofLouisville, chairman of the membershipcommittee.

Wider exchange of radio industrystatistics between RMA members wasreported by George Furness, chairmanof the statistics committee. Monthlyreports regarding sales and stocks onhand are being exchanged betweenmembers through the RMA central bu-reau and are of increasing value to theassociation's members, according to Mr.Furness. Further development of thestatistical service is planned in the nearfuture.

Many radio merchandising problemsare being studied to assist members,according to a report of Major H. H.Frost, chairman of the merchandisingcommittee. The merchandising commit-tee now has under consideration thefollowing subjects:

Standardization of manufacturers'policies on freight allowances to job-bers; analysis of manufacturers' costof distribution; establishment of a cen-tral warehouse in Philadelphia; estab-lishment of sales training courses fordealers and salesmen; maintenance ofmailing lists of dealers and jobbers foruse of members; merchandising analy-sis of country, section by section; es-tablishment of uniform guarantees onvarious radio products.

Eighty-one foreign countries now arebuying American radio products invarying quantities, according to a re-port submitted to the board by H. H.Pollock, chairman of the foreign tradecommittee. Canada still is the prin-cipal foreign purchaser of Americanradio products, whose exports have in -increased greatly during the past year.

An export questionnaire sent recentlyto the RMA membership developed thattwenty-four companies maintain exportdepartments, while ninety - seven usecombination export managers, salesfactors, and similar export sales agen-cies. Many requests regarding Ameri-can radio products are received by theforeign trade committee which recentlyhas been reorganized to become moreefficient in developing export trade forRMA mmbers. A governing committeehas been appointed by Mr. Pollock.

Radio legislation in several Statesand cities is receiving the attention ofthe legislative committee which is head-ed by C. C. Colby, of Canton, Mass.Reports on pending Federal and Stateas well as some municipal legislation,were received by the RMA board atthe meeting. In Congress a bill of sub-stantial interests to broadcasters andbroadcasting, sponsored by ChairmanWallace White of the House MerchantMarine Committee, has already passedthe House and may pass the Senatebefore adjournment, according to a re-port received by the board from FrankD. Scott, Washington legislative coun-sel for the RMA.

The board authorized the necessaryaction to protect radio interests in con-nection with a new law passed by theSouth Carolina legislature levying atax on set owners, the proceeds to goto a war veterans' hospital. The con-stitutionality of the South Carolina lawis questioned and appropriate steps willbe taken by the RMA.

The Gar-den management raised a question ofits having a prior contract for Nation-al Broadcasting service upon its bouts,on an annual basis. A statement fromMr. Grunow yesterday said he regard-ed the representations made on bothsides in connection with his broadcastof the bout as being in good faith andthat he would have no objection tomaking his broadcast available to theNational company as well as the Co-lumbia company, without charge, ifthose managing the charity would re-consider the matter and accept his do-nation.

Preparations by the trade from oneend of the country to the other forexpeditious service of the public withradio facilities for hearing the June12 attraction will undoubtedly be rush-ed. The fight is the first since theDempsey-Tunney battle in Chicago thatis credited with having enormous 'kick'for the great body of the public. Shar-key, present champion, has had severalfairly good fights in the last threeyears. His latest was a defeat of PhilScott. British champion, at PalmBeach, a contest marred by charges offouling and more or less recriminationon both sides. Sharkey is rated as afighter of great capabilities and con-siderable power but his temperamentalattitude during important engagementshas attracted knocks as well as boostsfrom devotees of the leather -pushingart.

"Der Maxie" Schmeling has come outof Germany within the last year anda half to bid for something of the color-ful position in fistiana held by JackDempsey. He resembles Dempsey mark-edly in appearance and manner and theboys are beginning to rate him as a"killer." Schmeling's principal Ameri-can victory has been over Johnny Risko,the Cleveland 'India rubber man.'

All in all, the Sharkey-Schmelingmatch has all the ear -marks of pro-ducing a champion whose subsequentperformances will keep the public gluedto box-office lines and radio loud speak-ers during his matches over the nextfive years. It may be remembered thatneither Dempsey nor Willard werehighly regarded among those who meas-ured by Johnson, Jeffries Corbett andJohn L. Sullivan at Toledo. Yet Demp-sey became a sporting magnifico aboutwhom they will talk for many a yearafter he has departed into the champValhalla.

However and wherever the forth-coming bout is broadcast, the fact thatit goes on the air denotes a new andenlightened view of radio by the powersthat be in the boxing business. Theyhave awakened to the shrewd knowl-edge possessed by the late Tex Rickardthat radio advertises boxing with directbenefit to all phases of the game.

CLEVELAND, OHIO, Friday.

Trade interest is centered on newmodels that are to be exhibited at theRMA trade show at Atlantic City, andalso the fact that there is to be anadvance in prices on some makes June1. Those dealers who have outsidecrews working reported that businessshows a continued improvement. Rec-ord sales have been holding up well.Portable phonographs are beginning tomove better due to hot weather and theapproach of vacation season.

Distributors of electrical refrigera-tors report that business is increasingand that the hot weather has been adecided help in making sales. The vari-ous concerns are busy recruiting sales-men for their house -to -house crews. Thecity and suburbs are being canvassedintensively and a large number of in-stallations are being made daily.

General Motors radio sets made theirhow to the Cleveland public this week.The local zone headquarters are locatedat 3030 Euclid avenue where the com-plete line is on display for the inspec-tion of the trade. The five cabinetstyles, Ileppelwaite, Sheraton, LateItalian, Queen Anne and Georgian,have aroused much admiration. Author-ized dealers are now being appointedthroughout the territory and the yellowand black dealer signs are beginningto appear in the various localities. Thecompany's showrooms are spacious andattractively fitted up, and a large num-ber of the trade have been in to viewthe new line. The local newspapershave all given editorial mention tothese newest additions to radio. Thetone control adjustment feature iscreating a lot of trade as well as publicinterest.

The notice of advance in price on thepresent Majestic models effective .Tune1 has caused dealers to stock up at theprevailing prices. A number of localMajestic dealers are planning on at-tending the radio show at Atlanticcity. The Majestic savings hank andclub idea which was iai red need .woweeks ago into this territory by theCleveland Majestic Distributing Corp.is proving to be the best sales stimu-lator yet tried. In order to prove itsefficacy, R. R. Meyers, general mana-ger of the company, made a personalcanvass of six homes on the Heights,which is admitted to be the hardestterritory in the city in which to sell,and put in three banks. These accountswere turned over to the dealer in thatsection. Since then retailers have beengiving the idea a thorough test and arevery enthusiastic over it. It appealsvery strongly to their canvassers as itmeans money for them each night. Itcreates prospects when other meanshave failed to interest them in sets, andalso gives the dealer the opportunityto sell Majestic tubes by the same plan.

The new Majestic refrigerator mod-els are expected some time in June andthey will .be handled from Majesticheadquarters at 4608 Prospect avenue.

The Cleveland Music Trades Asso-ciation held its monthly meeting and

dinner at the Winton Hotel on Mondayevening. Anthony L. Maresh, presi-dent, was in the chair, and there wasa good attendance present. It was de-cided to invite the Music Merchants'Association of Ohio to hold its 1931annual convention in Cleveland and thisinvitation will be extended when theorganization meets in September.

President Maresh will entertain themembers of the local organization ata picnic on his farm, the date to beannounced later. There will be no moremeetings until Fall.

The general meeting of the OhioRadio Trades' Association, scheduled tohave been held on May 12th, has beenpostponed until Tuesday evening, May20. It will be held in the Euclid roomof the Statler hotel. Artists from Sta-tion WHK will furnish entertainmentand there will be light refreshmentsfollowing the business session.

Eldon D. Lewis, secretary of the OhioRadio Trades' Association, has movedits offices to 1003 Guarantee Titlebuilding, Superior avenue near EastNinth street.

The Metropolitan Opera Co. closedits annual weekly engagement at Pub-lic Hall last week. There were capa-city audiences at each performance.The opera created considerable businessin records and also sheet music of thattype, as well as arousing a great dealof public interest in music generally.

Sixteen bands from Cleveland andnorthern Ohio high schools took partin the annual contest at Berea lastweek. Local small goods dealers aremuch interested in these contests as itcreates interest among music studentsand creates a demand for band andorchestra instruments.

The Cleveland Distributing Co., At-water Kent distributor, is installing anumber of model 48 battery -operatedreceivers in autos of various makes.The model E speaker is used in connec-tion with it. The outfit lists at $120.The company has just concluded agroup of dealer meetings in Youngs-town, Akron, Canton, Mansfield andToledo, all of which were well attend-ed. Much enthusiasm was shown. A. C. Benjamin, formerly field rep-resetnative for the Atwater Kent Mfg.Co., is now traveling for the ClevelandDistributing Co.

An exposition is to be staged by theHumphrey Co., at Euclid Bach Park,August 23 to September 7, and whichwill include a large radio and refrig-erator exhibit. 'There will be two hun-dred portable booths erected and thelog cabin and colonnade will also beused for exhibition purposes. Merchan-dise of all description will be on dis-play. The Majestic Distributing Co.will show its new refrigerator.
