SUISA Là, dove nasce musica nuova — Where the music is new 3
Xavier Dayer
tiva, mettere così in primo piano questi creatori
è una logica conseguenza. Quest’anno colpisce
creazione musicale in Svizzera è prodigiosa, i talenti
scoperto, sono ormai all’opera.
Eppure, il riconoscimento finanziario di questo
«oro artistico» deve essere ancora messo a punto;
Grandi talenti e forze riuniteRemarkable talents, pooled energies
We are pleased to present here the portraits of five
SUISA members. Putting these creators in the limelight
was a matter of course, since the composer’s work is
our Society’s very “raison d’être”. It is striking to discover,
this year again, certain of our country’s most pre-
stigious artists. We are extremely grateful to them for
accepting to testify to their art and to their special
ties with their rights’ administration society. Whether
it be in the field of contemporary classical music,
pop rock, children’s music, film music or popular music,
here are five of Switzerland’s indispensable creators.
We trust that these portraits will confirm what we
already know: Switzerland’s musical creation is pro-
digious, its talents remarkable and the pooled energies
on hand to ensure they flourish.
Yet economic recognition of this “artistic gold” needs
to be more firmly established; for this purpose, unity
is essential. In unity there is strength. United, we compo-
sers and publishers shall be able to defend our rights
and face the fundamental challenges of the digital age.
I wish you interesting and inspiring reading.

At his workplace in the sound studio, Adrian Frutiger
has the peace and quiet he needs to concentrate on his
acoustic patterns and sound tracks.
SUISA Where the music is new 5
The door to Adrian Frutiger’s studio is somewhat concealed at
the end of a backyard. “To be able to create, I need to be un-
disturbed”, says the film score composer. The importance of
concentration is reflected in the masses of equipment placed in
a horse-shoe around two office chairs facing several terminals.
“First, I run the film over in my mind and try to sense how it might
sound”. It sometimes takes him weeks to assemble the appro-
priate sounds. He then tries out ideas intuitively, groping with
up to 800 sounds for a sound pattern.
This process generally produces a number of motifs. “And I
realise that some also fit elsewhere. That is how I create a con-
nection between individual scenes. And so a specific musical line
starts to emerge for the film”. Adrian Frutiger believes it is es-
sential to underscore what goes on beneath the dialogue and
storyline. Then he coordinates the dramaturgy together with the
director – for feature films this is often Michael Steiner.
“If it weren’t for SUISA, I wouldn’t be able to do what I love
doing”, Adrian Frutiger emphasises. “Producers do not gener-
ally pay much for the music. So rights management accounts for
a large portion of my income”. Moreover, FONDATION SUISA,
SUISA’s foundation for the promotion of music, enabled him to
employ an orchestra for the sound track of the documentary film
“Freifall”. “That was much more moving than using samples”.
A sottoline-
In que-

Some very different places have marked Erika Stucky and her
music, spanning jazz, yodel, rock and performance. She grew up
on the American West Coast during the Flower-Power era, then
spent her teenage years in the strictly Catholic Oberwallis. “The
combination of these contrary influences was both cool and in-
spirational” she explains in the rugged Swiss German dialect of
the Valais which barely conceals her broad American English.
The composer, singer and actress now lives in Thalwil, near
Zurich, which has good connections to the city and is within walk-
ing distance of the lake.
Erika Stucky has established her headquarters in a tiny room.
“It’s quiet here. And a comfortable pressure prevails because
everything important for my work is concentrated in this room.
Everything is music here; there is nothing to distract me”. Musi-
cal ideas often hit her elsewhere – on her motorbike for exam-
ple. “When that happens I stop the bike and sing into my cell-
phone”. When she creates an entire piece, she sings the lines of
all the instruments one after the other with the help of a soft-
ware programme. She thinks less about stylistical direction than
about the musicians in the band. “I have the musicians in my
head like a film director who visualises a certain actress stomp-
ing about the moors”.
Erika Stucky is above all a live musician. But she thinks it’s
good and important to receive royalties for her composition
work too, thanks to SUISA. “I am always grateful to the angels
at SUISA who relieve me of tedious work and provide legal
guidance”.
nuscola senza luce naturale.

77 Bombay Street develops the song in
the rehearsal room from one brother’s melody
and lyrics.
SUISA Where the music is new 9
To reach 77 Bombay Street’s rehearsal room, you have to go
through a labyrinthine car park that could be anywhere –
Adelaide, Basel, Berlin, London or – precisely – Chur. All these
cities have marked the music career of the four brothers com-
prising the band: Esra, Joe, Matt and Simri-Ramon Buchli. Matt
regards the two years in Australia as having been especially
important. “I realised there that you don’t always have to follow
the set path. So we gave up our jobs and broke off our studies
to focus on music”.
Rehearsing under a shopping mall is practical says Simri-
Ramon with a laugh. “But we chose the location because it had
daylight and was bigger than the rehearsal room we had before.
Our instruments and equipment can be placed exactly how we
have them on stage”. Their songs are born in the most various
ways. Esra: “I have noticed that there is no recipe or how-to for
a hit – that’s the cool thing about it”. One thing is clear, however:
the basic framework of a song – mostly the melody and a few
lines of lyrics – always only comes from one brother. “He is then
the leader for that song, and the singer. Then we develop it to-
gether in the rehearsal room”.
The settlements from SUISA are an important supplement
to their direct income from music sales and concerts. “We are
lucky that a few of our songs are played a lot on the radio, even
in the USA”. Thanks to their royalties, the band can afford adven-
tures like the recording of their last album in Australia.
appunto a Coira.
Joe, Matt e Simri-Ramon Buchli.
complemento molto importante agli incassi diretti derivanti dai
addirittura negli Stati Uniti.»
ni dell’ultimo album in Australia.

It is quiet in the Bruderholz neighbourhood in Basel although
the main train station is not far away. “When I’m composing, I
need peace and quiet and the right atmosphere”, Heinz Holliger
explains from his unpretentious home. Otherwise the oboist,
composer and conductor, who was born in Langenthal in 1939,
can compose music anywhere – because he does it in his head.
“I only write down a piece when it’s finished”. When you com-
pose there is always the risk of self-deceit. “Once something is
on paper, it is suddenly very convincing”.
For Heinz Holliger, the creative process means testing one’s
limits to see how far one can go. “An idea flashes through your
mind and disappears like lightning, planting a seed that starts
to grow. And then you watch to see where it stops”. Since he
plays many instruments himself, he can take their individual fea-
tures into account when he composes. “When I’m writing the
violin part, for example, I tap the fingerings on the table”.
“Basically, I earn my money with wind – blowing and con-
ducting”, Heinz Holliger says thoughtfully. “I could only eke a
modest living from the royalties I receive from SUISA for my
compostitions”. He learnt early on that “contrary to recreativi-
ty, creativity is miserably disregarded”. He first joined the music
scene as a soloist in 1967. “When I performed ‘Siebengesang’,
my concert for the oboe, my fee as an oboist was about 20 times
higher than the royalties I collected as a composer”.
sta molto dall’affaccendata stazione FFS.
desta», afferma Heinz Holliger.

Sonia Grimm practises dancing and singing
with children age 3 and older to the songs she
composes at home.
SUISA Where the music is new 13
The magnificent view over Lake Geneva is not the reason why
Sonia Grimm composes her children’s songs in Arzier-Le Muids.
“I feel really comfortable here; it’s so peaceful and I can work
undisturbed”, explains the singer and composer from the Can-
ton of Vaud. Not least because in her flat she can work at any
time without having to drive elsewhere. “That’s important be-
cause I can only compose when I am inspired. And my inspira-
tion fluctuates quite a bit. Sometimes I write three songs in a
week and then none for six months”.
Sonia Grimm writes the music and the lyrics at the same time
“since words come to me mostly with a melody”. When she then
sits at the piano, she already has the song in her head and only
needs to find the matching chords. Afterwards, an arranger fin-
ishes it “but the song has already got its soul”. She often imagi-
nes how children will sing and dance to it. She then teaches the
songs in her classrooms, currently to about 250 children. This in
turn leads to shows with which she manages to fill locations as
large as the “Arena de Genève”.
Sonia Grimm has been living off her music for ten years now
thanks to significant sales of sound recordings, and to royalties.
“I think it is very important to have an organisation like SUISA
ensuring that song rights are properly managed”. But she also
sees SUISA as a voice for music creators. “Our life here is tough
because we do not have the same support as in other countries”.
partamento può lavorare in qualsiasi momento senza dover an-
dare da qualche altra parte. «Questo è importante dato che
compongo solo quando sono ispirata. E l’ispirazione varia mol-
to.
Sonia Grimm scrive musica e testo allo stesso tempo, «dato
niera toccante nelle sue scuole a 250 alunni.

La SUISA – chi siamoSUISA – who we are
SUISA is a non-profit cooperative society for music authors,
composers, lyricists and publishers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
SUISA has over 35,000 members representing all musical walks
of life. SUISA also represents the world music repertoire of two mil-
lion authors in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. We negotiate
tariffs for all music usages with the associations of music users and
deliver licences to about 90,000 clients and users for perfor-
mance, broadcasting and mechanical rights. We act as an interface
between music authors and publishers and whoever uses music
outside the private sphere. We invoice royalties on behalf of authors
and publishers, collect the proceeds and distribute them to the
authors and publishers whose works were used. SUISA develops,
runs and licenses technical solutions for the management of
authors’ rights.
Our organisationThe cooperative belongs to the composers, lyricists and publishers.
The General Meeting elects the President and the 14 mem-
bers of the Board; the Board appoints the Executive Committee.
Since July 1st 2010, the Executive Committee has consisted
of Andreas Wegelin, Vincent Salvadé and Irène Philipp Ziebold.
SUISA employs some 209 persons in all, corresponding to 177
full-time employees. With offices in Zurich, Lausanne and Lugano,
SUISA is present in Switzerland’s three main language regions.
sono state utilizzate.
SUISA Where the music is new 15
I nostri associati percepiscono
tariffa applicata è notevolmente maggiore rispetto a quella
annoveriamo:
– Organizzatori di concerti
– Emittenti radio e TV
– Discoteche
– Club
– Albergatori e ristoratori
– Organizzatori di feste
– Negozianti
– Produttori di supporti sonori
– Produttori di film
– Importatori o produttori di hardware
– Digital Service Provider (p. es. iTunes, Spotify, ecc.)
Our members SUISA is a cooperative society which belongs to its members.
At the end of 2015, 35,381 rightholders of which 33,235 authors and
2,146 publishers entrusted the management of their rights to
SUISA. Authors and publishers of music receive money when their
works are broadcast, reproduced or performed in public. More-
over, we maintain a Pension Fund for authors and publishers to
supplement our members’ income from authors’ rights after
they retire. Our members are
– Composers or arrangers of musical works
– Writers, arrangers or translators of the lyrics of musical works
– Authors’ heirs and successors
– Publishers of musical works
Our clientsAnybody using music outside the private sphere is required to
declare the use to SUISA. SUISA will then issue a licence for the
relevant usage. Licence fees are set in tariff schedules which
are regularly negotiated with representative associations of users
(e. g. Gastrosuisse, SWICO, etc.). The greater the role of the
music in the relevant use, the higher the fee. Thus the licence fees for
concerts are higher than those for background music in stores.
Our clients include
– Concert organisers
– Radio and television broadcasters
– Discotheques
– Clubs
– Hotels and restaurants
– Organisers of events
– Shopowners
– Record producers
– Film producers
– Hardware importers and manufacturers
– Digital Service Providers (e. g. iTunes, Spotify, etc.)

SUISA Where the music is new 17
Da dove provengono i nostri introitiWhere our revenues come from
na parte delle entrate vengono poi riversate all’estero. Viceversa,
musica viene usata all’estero.
SUISA’s revenues come from licences for mechanical rights,
performance and broadcasting rights, online usages and
from fair compensation (such as the blank media levy for private
copying).
In Switzerland, the music of foreign composers generates
the greatest turnover. Therefore, a great part of the revenues col-
lected in Switzerland are distributed abroad. Conversely,
our members receive royalties from abroad when their music
is performed and broadcast in other countries.

Lo scopo del nostro impegnoOur mission statement
Our daily activity is dedicated to ensuring that composers, writers
and publishers of music are fairly and adequately remunerated
for the use of their works in public. In addition, we support Swiss
musical creation through our foundations and sponsoring activities.

The fund grants eligible members a contribution to their retirement
