STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN 2018 “Transformed and Transforming”
October 29 – November 19
The theme of this year’s Stewardship Campaign
is “Transformed and Transforming.” This theme
catches several emphases of the Christian faith
at this time in history. God’s Spirit transforms
us, but the Spirit doesn’t stop with us. God
transforms us in order that we might
participate in the transformation of the world.
As Genesis 12:2 puts it, “I will bless you…so that you will be a blessing.”
This year’s Stewardship Campaign will begin on
Sunday, October 29 (which just happens to be Reformation Sunday!), and will run for four
weeks, with Stewardship Dedication Sunday taking place on Sunday, November 19. The
Stewardship Committee looks forward to talking with you more about your commitment
to generously support the mission and ministry of this congregation in 2018.

FROM THE INTERIM PASTOR Dear friends at Lewinsville, During the month of November, we
will be giving much of our attention at
Lewinsville to the annual Stewardship
Campaign. Stewardship is one of the important
ways that we talk about connecting our hearts
to God’s mission in the world.
The theme of the 2018 Stewardship
Campaign is “Transformed and Transforming.”
This phrase directs our attention to several key
points, all of which are pointing to the same
reality:
God has transformed us, so that we might participate in the
transformation of the world.
God has blessed us so that we might bless others (Genesis
12:3).
The gifts of God are not given to us to keep to ourselves.
The church does not exist for its own sake, but for the sake of
the world.
God is at work in the world – healing, correcting, rescuing,
reconciling, comforting, loving, teaching, leading, guiding, and saving.
We are summoned out of our small comfort zones to participate in
that work with God.
Recently the Session affirmed the following guiding principles
as a statement of Lewinsville’s mission priorities:
As we grow closer to Jesus, we:
Show HOSPITALITY to strangers
Pursue a THOUGHTFUL APPROACH to the Christian faith
Nurture MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS with other people
These three priorities – hospitality to those who are
different, a thoughtful approach to faith, meaningful relationships –
are profoundly needed in our world and are rooted in the character of
this congregation. All three are areas of life and mission in which we
can grow and do better. And we believe that all three are part of God’s
own purposes and mission in our community and in the world.
If you sense excitement and energy around these three
priorities, then we invite you to connect your own heart to these
aspects of God’s mission. We invite you to invest in God’s mission
through Lewinsville Presbyterian. We ask you to make a financial
commitment to this mission and to increase your commitment for
2018.
Friends, Lewinsville is entering a new chapter in its history.
God is doing a new thing at Lewinsville, and we want you to be a part
of it.
Many blessings for your journey, Pastor Scott
ALL SAINTS TAIZÉ WORSHIP Sunday, November 5 at 7:00 pm in the Chapel On All Saints Sunday we remember the
dead and those who are counted among the Communion of
Saints. It is a day to remember loved ones who know
fullness of life in the presence of our Lord. At the All Saints
Taizé Worship you are invited to bring a flat bottomed
candle to light in celebration and remembrance of loved
ones who have died. It may be 3 months, 3 years, 13 years or
30 years since your loved one has died, it doesn’t matter.
At the All Saints service we name those who have died,
light a candle in their memory and give thanks to God for
them. It is a quiet service with singing, silent reflection,
darkness, prayer and candles. Join us and invite someone you
know who may benefit by remembering their loved one in
silent prayer. Questions? Contact Pastor Emily
What is the Deacon Fund? On the first Sunday of the month when you see people
standing at the exit of the sanctuary holding baskets labeled,
“Deacon Fund” you may wonder where those funds go. If so,
know that the Deacon Fund is received to provide short-term
financial assistance to those in our community who have
emergency needs. Monthly at the Deacon meeting the
Deacons discuss Deacon Fund receipts and disbursements.
When there are no individual needs made known then the
Deacons disburse the Deacon Fund receipts to organizations
where a stated need has been expressed. So far in 2017
Deacon Fund disbursements have been made for the Summer
Mission Project, for school supplies at Second Story (formerly
Alternative House), for purchasing lockers for the Falls Church
Homeless Shelter, and for purchasing a food mixer for the
Christ House dinner team’s use. The November Deacon Fund
collection is designated for the Lewinsville Retirement
Residences (LRR) meal program. Residents at LRR are required
to pay for meals, yet for some residents this is a financial
hardship. The receipts received from the November 5 Deacon
Fund will go directly toward offsetting the cost of the LRR
meal program. Please give generously as we support our
neighbors at The Lewinsville Retirement Residences and as we
seek to provide short-term financial assistance to those in our
community with emergency needs.

The Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) continues to work hard in the search for
Lewinsville’s next Pastor. Besides the usual computer-matching system, the
committee has been continuing to reach out to contacts and organization within
the PCUSA world. This includes well-known symposiums and fellows programs
within the denomination, which has led us down some interesting and promising
paths. We also ran another ad in the October edition of The Presbyterian Outlook. An informational luncheon was held on October 15th, during which the status of
the search was shared with those in attendance. In a nutshell, we have begun phone interviews and are planning face to face meetings with
those candidates who have piqued our interest. In addition, we are calling references, listening to sermons, and delving into each
interviewee’s social media footprint in the attempt to get a full picture of each candidate. As always, please keep the PNC in your prayers.

A Great Way to Share the Bible Having attended the first two
storytelling group meetings, I fully recommend it to others. Rachel
Russell skillfully led a small group of us, first to understand the
meaning and context of a bible passage and then working together and
as individuals, to the point that each of us could remember most of
the same story. It was challenging but empowering, and surprisingly
stress free.
We read the same passage, “The Healing of Blind Bartimaeus,”silently
as individuals and out loud to one another. It was amazing how many
differences of emphasis and interpretation there were between one
reader and another. We took turns trying to remember and tell the
story out loud while others filled in missing pieces. It was similar to
telling a collective memory around a family dinner table when a family
member tells about an event and others fill in additional bits that they
remember.
Sometimes a group member will present a memorized Bible passage
for practice. This is a safe place to do that and we are each in charge
of the story we tell. The group may provide feedback at the teller’s
request.
We meet once monthly, usually on the fourth Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
The next passage will be the Christmas story from Luke. We welcome
others to join us in this enriching experience.

I love being able to grab a cup of coffee after worship, spotting
someone new to speak with, or catching up with old friends. But,
coffee hour requires someone volunteering for an hour to make the
coffee and lemonade, and to fill the milk pitchers. It requires
someone to stay after coffee hour to clean up.
Thank you to all of you who have made coffee for years, and who
continue to serve. Thank you also to the people who have stepped
up in the last few weeks, but we still need YOU.
The coffee system is much easier than the old pots. You can sign up
for the dates that work for you--we still have a few blank spaces in
November and December. We are happy to assign an experienced
partner while you learn the ropes.
Go to the church website, click on the blue bar at the top for
“Serving”, drop down to “Volunteer at Lewinsville” and click on
coffee. This will take you to “Sign up Genius” where you can see the
available dates and times. If you would rather, we also have a paper
sign- up sheet at coffee hour. Any questions? Contact: Laury Bender
at [email protected] / 703-893-1260 or Alison Staeger at
[email protected] / 703-980-3781. Thank you.
Adult Education Module 2 November 19-December 10
Advent is a season of HOPE, a
hope centered on God’s
extravagant love for the world
revealed in the birth of God’s
Son, the Christ child. We will
explore this hope in a DVD series
entitled, “A Thrill of Hope: The
Christmas Story in Word and
Art.”
Each week we will examine a
portion of the nativity story as
told in either the gospel of Matthew or Luke. We will also be
guided by insightful commentary by some of America’s leading
biblical scholars from the Chandler School of Theology at
Emory University. In addition, each text will be illustrated and
interpreted by the stunning artwork of John August Swanson.
The class will be taught by The Reverend Daniel Thomas on
Sundays (Nov. 19, 26 and Dec. 3 and 10) at the 9:45 a.m.
education hour and also on Mondays (Nov. 20 & 27, Dec. 4 and
11) from 10:30 -11:45 a.m.
Come and explore how hope is revealed in the angel Gabriel’s
visit to Mary, the birth in a lowly stable in Bethlehem, the
adoration of the shepherds and the majestic visit of the Wise
Men. May exploring these timeless texts offer us a living hope
for our journeys of faith in Advent 2017.
Class Location: Library Get Their Name is a Sunday
morning class taught by Pastors
Scott and Emily using a book and
video with the same name.
Together we will discuss how to
move past the fear of inviting or
sharing faith with others in order
to move toward an active,
passionate missionary lifestyle.
According to the author of Get
Their Name, “We must recapture
our missionary soul as professing
Christians in America.” This is a
class to help us learn how to
overcome what we have been
afraid of or ill equipped to do concerning our faith. Sundays,
November 19 & 26, December 3 & 10 from 9:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.

Fair Trade Fair - St Andrews Hall December 3 Plan to purchase Christmas gifts for teachers, family and friends (check, cash or credit card). Handmade items from Amani ya Juu will be available for purchase. Amani ya Juu is a Swahili saying which means “Peace from Above”. Amani ya Juu is a social economic enterprise committed to peace and reconciliation for women from many African nations and cultures. They use beautiful African materials to create high quality fair trade home goods and accessories. Through their faith in God who provides a transcendent peace, the women who create the handmade goods heal from the past. Together we grow in dignity and respect for one another.
Presbyterian Women will host the Annual Advent Reflection and Dessert on Saturday afternoon, December 9 at
1:30 in Fellowship Hall.
Also, Presbyterian Women will again be filling Christmas Stockings for the Salvation Army.
You do not have to be a Circle member to take part in this mission. For further information for either of these,
contact Betty Yurkewitch or Jody Ransom.

Better Angels Skills Workshop: How to Talk with Loved Ones and Friends Across the
Political Divide November 19 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Chapel
There's a lot of stress these days among family members and friends
who are divided politically, and the current polarized public
conversation doesn't help. The Lewinsville Faith and Public Policy
Committee has invited Better Angels to present a Skills Workshop to help us learn skills for
having respectful conversations that clarify differences, search for common ground, and
affirm the importance of the relationship.
Better Angels is a bipartisan network of leaders and organizations whose vision is to
reunite America. Their method is to improve our society’s approaches to conflict. They
seek an America with less uninformed animosity between left and right, less separation of
upscale America from the rest of America, and fewer good reasons for the governed to
hold the governing in contempt.
Mark your calendars for Sunday afternoon, November 19, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in
the Chapel. Sandwiches and beverages will be provided. Grab friends and/or foes with
whom you need to better communicate concerning the difficult social and political issues
confronting our country and bring them along.
Sunday, November 26 9:45-10:45 a.m. Fellowship Hall Parents are invited to
join their children in
Godly Play (4’s & 5’s)
and in the Workshop
Rotation (grades 1-6)
for a morning of activities that will help us
PREPARE to welcome the Christ Child.

The Shepherd’s Center of McLean-Arlington-Falls Church is in dire
need of volunteers to take seniors to and from their medical and
therapy appointments, the pharmacy and grocery store.
During the past four months, the number of current and new client
requests has grown substantially and the Center has had to turn
down many requests due to the lack of volunteer drivers.
If you or someone you know has a heart for seniors and would like
to volunteer to help them, your services will be greatly
appreciated. To volunteer or to find out more about the
Shepherd’s Center, call
