But the company says the reopening of the line could be delayed by the discovery of additional damage to the bridge or weather-related in- terruptions to the repairs. Since the derailment of a GWA goods train on Decem- ber 27 — in flood waters cau- sed by Cyclone Grant — the company’s train services have been terminating at Katherine, where the freight has been forwarded to Dar- win by road. ‘‘The majority of the de- railed rolling stock and freight containers have been removed from the site, and GWA’s environmental re- mediation of the site is ongo- ing,’’ the company said yes- terday. ‘‘Crews are focused on restoring the abutments to the north and south ends of the bridge, where a de- tailed inspection of the bridge structure has re- vealed unexpected damage that will require additional restoration work. ‘‘It is now anticipated that freight operations will resu- me on February 14.’’ The Ghan will also resume its complete Adelaide-to- Darwin train journeys on that date. The interruption has meant passengers have been required to complete the final three hours of the jour- ney by bus — from Kather- ine to Darwin — but Great Southern Rail spokesman David Smith said ticket sales had been unaffected. ‘‘It’s been a fantastic feat on their (GWA) behalf to get the bridge rebuild done the way they have,’’ he said. Ban on ute passengers POLICE yesterday warned Territorians that it is il- legal to carry passengers in the trays of utes. This followed the arrest of a 45-year-old man who had allegedly been carrying five passengers on the tray of his dual-cab ute at Mandorah, on Thursday night. The man, a learner driver, returned a blood- alcohol reading of .180 — more than three times the legal limit. Carrying passengers in ute trays was banned in the late 1980s after seven people died in a crash in Alice Springs.
