The Avro Vulcan 1s a strategic bomber operated by the Royal Air FOfce from 1956 to 1984 wtilch assumed the nuclear deterrence as one of "'JV" bombers The development began based on Spec1ficauon B35 46 issued by the MfllSt/y of Supply In 1947 Its prototype the Model 698 succeeded 1n rts wg,n fll(jlt in 1952 and was named Vulcan The next day she made a spectacu ar debut perfon11Jng a fly pass n the Farnborough Air Show 1n 1958 The first production type B 1 started lo be delr,ered to the RAF from 1956 after some vanous test flights The next year No 83 Squadron the first ope<abonal unit. fi111shed the orgaruzatJon ..,;u, the Vu ca,_ From 1960 the type B 2 wrth ECM and mod1f1ed v.,ngs v.ere deployed to tne unrts Up to ten air squadrons operated tne Vulcan. And the Vulcans participated 1n the OperatJon Skyshteld exeroses in 1961 as virtual eneme planes They ran through the US air defense network taking advantage of the ECM and succeeded in

mtrud ng upon the sky of New York In the Falklands Campaigi they partJClpated 111

the Operallon Black Buck as sole long-range bombels n the RAF They tOOk off from Ascension Island and made bomb attacks to the Port Stanley Allport and its radars which was the sole actual fight of the Vulcans Although the Vulcans were to reure from the RAF after the Falkland Conflict they continued to be operated as aenal tankers because the development of the next aenal tanker was delayed S1:>1 Vulcans were modified and added airborne refueling equipment and were operated unbl 1984 After that all the Vulcans retired from the RAF As a lot of fans felt regret about the rellrement the Vulcan XH558 received a restoration under thq 'Vulcan to the Sky'' proiect and made the first post-restorabon fl1!1lt 1n 2007 Even now she can be seen flying 1n some air shows
