    Background

    Early in the 1980s Dr. de Bono invented theSix Thinking Hats method.

    The method is a framework for thinking andcan incorporate lateral thinking helpspeople lay out all views side by side in

    parallel and then design a way forward.Separate out different aspects of thinking focus together on risks, then benefits thenfeelings.

    We can ask a person to put the hat onor take a hat off It is a polite way toencourage thinkers to apply each

    thinking process with equal effort & inthe same mode (same color of hat).

    Organizations such as PrudentialInsurance, IBM, Federal Express, BritishAirways, Polaroid, possibly the world'slargest company, use Six Thinking Hats.

    6Thinking HatsRepresent six modes of thinking and aredirections to think rather than labels forthinking.

    Separates ego from performance".

    The whole group wears the same color hat atthe same time (i.e. everyone does the sametype thinking at the same time) and allparticipants change hats at the same time(i.e. everyone changes thinking from onemode to another at the same time).

    The Hats Concept Why Hats?

    The Six Hats method is a convenient way ofputting into practice Parallel Thinking, which

    is so very different from argument. The hatsand colors are designed to make thinkingprocess practical, easy to remember and putto use.

    Lets all put on the yellow hat and see if wecan find some benefits to this idea.

    (Everyone wears the same hat at the sametime.)

    There is a traditional link betweenthinking & hats.

    Put on your thinking cap

    The hat is also a piece of clothing thatyou can easily put on or take off. This isan important part of the image becauseit is necessary to be able to switch from

    one thinking process to another easily.Are there anymore green hat ideas? Ifnot, lets switch to the white hat.

    Hats also indicate a certain role. Wetalk about wearing different hats toindicate our roles or responsibilities.

    Wearing my parent hat, I do not like that

    idea.

    In the same way, wearing one of the

    thinking hats is a sort of role-playingbecause you carry out the role indicatedby the hat.

    The Hats Concept The Six Hats

    There are 6 imaginary thinking hats, each hathaving a different color. Each of the six hatsrepresents a different type of thinking.

    When you put on one of the hats, youoperate exclusively in that mode of thinking.

    When you change from one hat to another,you change from the thinking mode indicatedby the first hat to the thinking mode indicatedby the second hat.

    The Hats Concept Why Six?Fewer than six hats would not adequatelycover the different types of thinking

    required.

    REMEMBER the hats are not categoriesor descriptions of thinkers.

    Each hat specifies a direction and focusfor thinking.
