Population Growth

• This rapid growth is due mainly to rural-urban migration.

David’s Story

• This is my home. I live here with my parents, four brothers and two sisters. I am the eldest; I am fifteen years old. We pay £25 a month rent for our house.

• It is made from corrugated iron, which we were able to buy, and mud and wood, which we found.

• We don’t have our own toilet; we share one with 10 other families. This gets very stinky, and many people go elsewhere.

David’s Story

• Outside our house there is sewage running down the mud street. It smells very bad.

• We don’t have running water in our house; we have to queue up and buy it from the man who lives three houses away. We cook outside using charcoal. We buy this from the woman next door.

• I go to school when our family can afford to pay school fees, but often I can’t go as we are too poor.

How to build David's House - Instructions

In pairs, you are going to build a scale model of David's family home.•1. Carefully cut out all the house pieces on Activity Sheet 12. There are two sides made from corrugated iron and one side each made from mud and wood.•2. Make David's home. The house pieces fit together to make a house. Just like real houses of this type, there are no tabs to help you put the house together, so you must use sticky tape to join the pieces as best as you can. The house does not have a roof (although the real one does!).•3. Organise the pieces to fit onto the base map on Activity Sheet 12. The house could be as big as you can make it. There is no right way of building the house, though some designs are better than others.

How to build David's House - Instructions

• 4. Cut out and make the furniture on Activity Sheet 12. There is one bed, a mat that some of the children sleep on and a storage unit. To make these cut out the shapes along the solid lines and fold along the dotted lines. Use glue to join them together. Organise these in a logical way in the house.

• 5. Cut out the people in David's family on Activity Sheet 12. Think about where the members of David's family will sleep. They can either sleep in the bed or on the mat. Make sure they all have a place to sleep.

• 6. Now think about where David's family will sit during the day. Fold them on their dotted lines and arrange.
