From the editor 1 Shamrock Gardens 3 Monitoring bores 3 What’s happening in La Grange 4
The final year for the La Grange project brings the outcomes, tasks and tools to fruition.
The depth to ground water App developed and recently completed by DAFWA’s Nick
Wright is one such task that we have highlighted in this edition. We are also pleased to
announce that the installation of the monitoring bores is about to commence, which will
ensure continued ability to monitor the health of the groundwater into the future.

The Federal Government recently released two White Papers involving the agriculture
industry; the White Paper on developing Northern Australia which is the vision to
unlock the potential and opportunities of the north and the Agricultural Competitive
White Paper being the government’s $4 billion investment in farmers and plan to grow
agriculture. Both have websites to navigate through topics of interest.
We look forward to unveiling the tools, information and outcomes in this final
year of the La Grange Agriculture project and sharing the stories of the
wonderful region that is the La Grange. Don’t forget to follow our Face book
page. Cheers, Felicity Brown

Depth to groundwater interactive map App DAFWA’s Nick Wright has developed the project’s interactive groundwater map App which will soon be live as a tool to identify depth to the groundwater in La Grange. The map is a combination of two data sets, the surface topography and the top of the Broome aquifer. The topography was taken from the NASA SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission), which has a catalogue of topography data for most of the world. The top of Broome aquifer was generated by a combination of the water levels that Bob Paul recorded two years ago and remote sensing data. These two layers together form a depth to water map. The map will be viewed online in a google maps type way and stored locally on iPhones and
iPads, which will allow anyone with one of these devices to browse the map or show their current
location. We look forward to launching the map App and congratulate Nick on his innovative work.

Installation of monitoring bores to commence

Shamrock Gardens propagate their own seedlings
The project legacy of monitoring bores to watch the health of the groundwater into the future is about to commence with the first bores to be installed on Roebuck Plains station. The project is working closely with Yawuru and the station surrounding the installation of the bores on Roebuck, which will commence late July. Country Managers and Ranger Programs will include groundwater monitoring in their Healthy Country plans and landholders and relevant departments will also be able to keep a good eye on the water’s health into the future.
Shamrock Gardens visit DAFWA staff were invited to visit local horticulture business, Shamrock Gardens, owned by Galwey Horticultural Pty Ltd and situated 150km south of Broome in the La Grange. Shamrock Gardens primarily produces watermelons and supplies to markets Australia wide. The irrigation system used by Shamrock Gardens is a sub surface trickle system which, along with the nature corridors retained as windbreaks surrounding each field achieves great water use efficiency, virtually eliminating water loss through evaporation. Thanks to Angus for an informative site visit to another impressive business currently operating within the La Grange.

Karajarri welcome visitors with new permit system
Over the past 12 months the Karajarri Rangers, Frazier Downs station and the Healthy Country team have undertaken an investigation and consultation into tourism access on northern Frazier Downs Station and subsequently developed a tourism strategy. As a result they have created a brief visitor management guide providing some basic information and protocols for visitors, with a map showing areas accessible for enjoyment and areas that are restricted. Revenue raised by fees will go directly into the operational budget for the Karajarri Rangers who manage the land. The Rangers and Healthy Country team are working under the direction of the Karajarri Traditional Lands Association which is the native title holder and pastoral lease holder of Frazier Downs Station. For a copy of the brochure, contact Sam Bayley [email protected]. and with any queries contact Sam and the Healthy Country team or the Karajarri Ranger group.
