Mission & GuidinG PrinciPles

La Lumiere School is a co-educational, independent boarding and

day secondary school for grades 9 through 12 and a post-graduate

year. Our rigorous education, personal relationships and focus on

values create a rich learning environment for students. They are

known by faculty, staff and other students from all grades. This

familiarity enables our students to make lasting connections, engage

in academics, participate socially, and define their path.

We connect. Arriving on La Lumiere’s campus, you are struck by its natural beauty – but what awaits you is a college-prep experience like none other. Our academic program combines with a strong family-like atmosphere fostered by an exceptionally talented faculty who are wholly dedicated to our students.

For almost 50 years, the core of a La Lumiere education has rested on four elements:• A family-like community where everyone knows everyone.• Rigorous academic and co-curricular offerings that help students develop their talents.

• An atmosphere of Christian ideals, grounded in the school’s Catholic heritage.• An exceptional faculty uncommonly committed to the students.

These four elements create a climate for students to be known and to thrive. A caring community encourages students to challenge themselves. Rigorous academic and co-curricular programs ensure that all students develop their gifts, participate in the life of the school, and build a family of lifelong friends. Christian ideals form the basis for the school’s culture and the moral context for its curriculum. Faculty members provide the knowledge and inspiration that help students excel.

COLLEGE COUNSELINGThe college counseling program, led by Dr. Peter Campbell, begins in ninth grade. Throughout the process, we emphasize match and fit in helping students choose the right college. During the college search, students benefit from meetings with Dr. Campbell and their parents using Naviance’s Family Connection, the leading web-based college planning tool. Additionally, each fall, colleges and universities visit La Lumiere’s campus to meet with students. Our graduates can be found at outstanding colleges and universities throughout the country. Our primary goal is to find the right college for each student, where they will meet their optimum personal success and fulfillment.

SCIENCE OLYMPIADSelect students compete on the School’s award winning Science Olympiad team. Through classroom activities, research and training, the team prepares for district, regional, and state tournaments. La Lumiere School has competed successfully at the state level for the last 21 years.

CO-CURRICULARSIn order to develop a well-rounded student, all La Lumiere students participate in one co-curricular activity per season. Our students’ academic experience is complemented by required athletic participation – choosing from fifteen varsity sports including: football, soccer, basketball, cross country, crew, volleyball, tennis, baseball, lacrosse, softball, track and golf. Students may also participate in drama, dance team, performance band, and other performing arts.

LEADERSHIP PROGRAMSThe La Lumiere Prefect System allows for appointed student leaders to serve their school by contributing in every phase of the school community — student life, admissions, service, spiritual life, residential life, and the overall quality of the school experience. In addition, La Lumiere has designed an innovative leadership curriculum where students explore leadership from every angle and take a “service learning” approach addressing a chosen issue. Students gain skills including improved public speaking, debate mechanics and procedures, and exposure to organizational behavior concepts.

INDEPENDENT STUDYFor qualified students in their final year, La Lumiere School offers independent study in each discipline. Students work with a team of faculty members in honors level study on a topic developed by the student and the faculty. Most projects take an inter-disciplinary approach.

COMMUNITY SERVICEAll students perform a minimum of 45 hours of community service as a requirement for graduation. Students are sensitized to the needs of others through first-hand work with the elderly, small children, homeless and other-abled persons. Students develop problem-solving skills, and learn compassion and understanding through this program.

TRADITIONS The La Lumiere experience is steeped in traditions including the Senior Bonfire, Morning Meeting, Taste of La Lumiere, Bookstore Basketball, Sixth Form Retreat, and the Headmaster’s Cup. We are a school where our traditions unite us in community and remind us that we are stronger together than apart.
