LA RABIDA – TOGETHER 2
Together is betterFiscal year 2009 was one of change – and new beginnings.
After 25 years on the Board of Trustees, Allen Kanter
completed his tenth year as chairman. We are deeply
grateful for his wise leadership and thank him for his service.
Succeeding him is Peggy Gann, who began her term July 1.
In keeping with our partnership strategy, we renewed our
affiliation of more than 50 years with the University of Chicago
Medical Center. In addition, we formed a partnership
agreement with Children's Memorial Hospital.
We launched the second phase of our inpatient renovation
plan, a $5 million makeover. The new unit – with 12 beds in
eleven rooms – will increase our inpatient capacity.
Also in 2009, we welcomed Michael Cleavenger (Vice
President, Development) and Kevin Rath (Associate Vice
President, Business Development and External Affairs) to our
executive team.
Together – within and beyond our hospital walls – we are
working with medical providers, our community, and our
donors to ensure children with special health care needs
and their families have access to the resources and services
they require.
Paula Kienberger Jaudes, M.D., President and CEO
LA RABIDA – TOGETHER 3
Together with our partnersLa Rabida has distinguished itself as a specialty hospital for
children with medically complex needs. The only hospital of
its kind in Chicago, we are dedicated to the treatment of…
• Chronic illnesses like asthma, diabetes and sickle cell
disease and children who are dependent on medical
technology
• Developmental disabilities, such as cerebral palsy and
Down syndrome
• Trauma induced by catastrophic injury, violence or abuse
Our inpatient services include transitional care for children
requiring rehabilitation following injury or surgery.
Partnering with leading medical institutions enables us to
offer a wealth of resources and expand our outreach to
young patients. Board-certified pediatric physicians from
the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital staff
our hospital and clinical programs.
Complementing this relationship is the partnership with
Children’s Memorial Hospital, effective July 1, 2009.
Pediatricians from Children’s Memorial – specially trained to
treat children with chronic conditions – staff our five-bed
treatment room and provide 24/7 coverage.
Working together, our provider partners are pediatric
professionals specializing in the treatment of children with
medically complex conditions.
Outpatient visits neared 32,000 during fiscal
year 2009, including 6,391 visits to our treatment
room for urgent care.
LA RABIDA – TOGETHER 4
La Rabida offers hospital- and community-based
TRAUMA services that address the psychoso-
cial issues of children who have experienced
catastrophic injuries, witnessed violence or
endured other types of trauma.
Together withthe communityLa Rabida’s mission extends to the seven counties of
metropolitan Chicago and northwest Indiana.
Some of our many services are available at satellite
locations. For example, trauma- and abuse-related services
are offered at the Joli Burrell Children’s Advocacy Center in
Park Forest and at the Chicago Child Trauma Center (CCTC)
in the South Shore neighborhood.
The CCTC is the only agency in Chicago specializing in
trauma-focused assessment and psychotherapy for children.
Within a safe, child-friendly environment, we serve children
who have experienced medical or psychological trauma.
We reach out with programs for clinicians, advocates,
parents and children with special needs. In June 2009, La
Rabida hosted “Tackling Diabetes,” with featured guest
Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler making his debut
public appearance in Chicago. Diagnosed with type 1
diabetes, Cutler provided inspiration to our young patients
and those from Children’s Memorial Hospital, John Stroger,
Jr. Hospital of Cook County and Rush Children’s Hospital.
Working together with referring physicians, hospitals and
agencies across our extended community, we strive to be a
place of hope for all children with special needs.
LA RABIDA – TOGETHER 5
Interdisciplinary teams plan, deliver and monitor
care for both inpatients and outpatients. In fiscal
year 2009, La Rabida admitted more than 1,000
inpatients, serving 9,000 children and their
families overall.
Together with ourinterdisciplinary teamsAt La Rabida, we’ve created a unique environment that helps
children meet the challenges of living with a complex medical
condition. We deliver extraordinary care that addresses the
total well-being of our young patients and promotes peace of
mind for their families – all under one roof.
We start by assembling an interdisciplinary team for each
patient. This team dedicates itself to developing a plan that
manages and monitors the patient’s care against short- and
long-term objectives.
Our scope extends beyond medical management. We focus
on what is necessary to optimize a child’s health and
independence at home, school and at play.
Teams typically include a board-certified pediatrician, nurse,
dietician, psychologist, infant developmental specialist, case
manager, social worker, child life specialist, physical
therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, nurse
educator and other pediatric clinicians as needed.
At the center of this team are the patient and family.
Working together, we identify what a child needs today to
maximize his or her health and well-being in the years ahead.
LA RABIDA – TOGETHER 6
Home is where patients are most likely to
THRIVE. We tailor our caregiver education
program to equip parents and others to care for
their child with confidence after discharge.
Together with our familiesPutting the family first: it’s an important aspect of La Rabida’s
compassionate, state-of-the-art care.
Why family first? Because we know that a child’s illness or
disability touches the entire family. As we attend to a young
patient’s medical needs, we also work to help the family
manage the child’s condition, both inside and outside the
hospital.
Even in the best situations, managing a family member’s
chronic or medically complex condition is a challenge for a
family. Often, families need help learning how to be at-home
health caregivers, finding in-home nursing care or homemaker
services, or obtaining the equipment and resources essential
to their child’s well-being.
We ease the burden by providing the training, education and
support that families need so that they can confidently bring
their child home to thrive.
That’s important, because at La Rabida, we believe home
is where a child’s physical and emotional needs are best
nurtured.
Working together with our patient families is an integral part
of every treatment plan.
LA RABIDA – TOGETHER 7
Donor gifts help La Rabida BRIDGE the gap
between our cost of healthcare delivery and
third-party reimbursement of medical services.
Together with our donorsWorking together during 2009, we have accomplished much.
But we could not have come this far without the continued
support of our donors – people and organizations who give of
their time and treasure to help La Rabida provide its unique
brand of care to children with medically complex conditions.
We rely heavily on you, our donors and volunteers, to help
us achieve this important mission.
We thank you for your generosity. Today, only a fraction of
the cost of many La Rabida services is reimbursed; your
contributions help us bridge the gap.
In 2009, La Rabida received with gratitude a $1.33 million
bequest from the estate of Robert and Mary Ann Gloh. This
represents the single largest gift from a private donor in our
113-year history.
We are also grateful to actor and former La Rabida patient
Joe Mantegna, who lent his name to our campaign to grow
our patient alumni network.
Working together with our donors and volunteers we have
additional resources to acquire new equipment, enhance
facilities, introduce new programs, and provide extra special
attention to patients and their families.
