Lili is working as a casual hooker in Monbijou Park. Sheis cheated out of her money by one of her suitors, a drugdealer named Mike. Shortly after, Mike seduces an asy-lum-seeker from Ukraine. This Ukrainian girl has a clea-

ning job in the house of a concert manager whose sonattempts to romance her. The son later seduces a marriedwoman, an acquaintance of his parents. The married wo-man has to overcome this affair with her dentist husband.The dentist dreams of revenging his wifes in delity byhaving an affair with his cute assistant. His cute assistant

irts with a celebrity photographer. The photographerhas an intimate connection with an actress. All charactersmeet once again at the photographers private showcase.

At this event, the actress seeks out the showcases spon-

sor, a sensitive heir of a wealthy industrialist family. As isthe nature of the round dance, the heir nally ends up onthe dingy living room sofa of Lili, the casual hooker.

R EALISATION

The movie Berliner Reigen is a collaborative effort of students in acting and screenplay atthe HFF. The dramatic design is based on Arthur Schnitzlers play Reigen, a chain of amorous

liaisons in Viennese society at the turn of the century.

Inspired by Ophls lm version of the play, the actors began inventing characters in con-temporary Berlin who would t the original concept. They improvised scenes. The screenplaystudents watched, commented, and continued developing the scenes. In the end, the director

coordinated the various plots and added the frame an outdoor skating arena.

The screenplay development took place in the summer of 2005. The movie was lmed at ori-ginal locations in Berlin and Brandenburg during 25 days in the winter of 2005/06. The budgetwas only a total sum of 40 000 Euro, added to by an enormous portion of idealistic commit-

ment.

The climax of the movie is an art showcase, which brings all characters together. Berlin pho-tographer Joachim Gern (who also created the cover photo) kindly provided his photographsfor this scene. Its lming took place in the Palast der Republik [former East Germanys parli-

ament building] literally a few days before the demolition began.

In post-production the crew utilized the supreme technical standard at the HFF. The sound, forexample, was mixed on the most modern mixer in Europe.

D IRECTOR

Dieter Berner was born in Vienna in 1944. After studying lm science, philosophy, and acting at Max-Reinhardt-Seminary in Vienna and Berlin, he founded hisown group, the Theatre of Courage. The group devoteditself to contemporary authors, created its own plays andsoon became the starting point for lm projects.

Alpensaga was created in the Eighties in collaborationwith Peter Turrini (this TV-miniseries received a numberof international awards). It was followed by about 40 mo-vies for cinema and television, amongst them Lenz oderdie Freiheit, Die Verlockung (Berlinale 1989), Ich oderdu, Mllomania, Die Verhaftung des J. N. Nestroy,

Sonnen nsternis (Tatort 2006).

Dieter Berner is professor for acting at the HFF in Babels-berg since 2004. He is the recipient of the Silver Nymph

of Monaco, the Austrian Volksbildungspreis, the ErichNeuberg Award, the British Academy Award, the GoldenRomy and several other festival honors.

Felix Leiberg was born in Dresden in 1978.He studied camera at the HFF Potsdam from 2001 to 2006.He worked as a cameraman and director of photography for a number of short lms anddocumentaries, such as the 15-minute My Redeemer (Mein Erlser), which was shownin competition at the Berlinale Festival in 2003 and received awards for Best Movie, BestDirector, and Best Camera at the Capalbio International Film Festival in Italy.In addition he has worked on commercials for Marlboro and BEWAG, as well as musicvideos for Kid Alex, Westbam, Die Toten Hosen, Toni Kater, Die rzte, amongstothers.

Martin Lischke was born in Berlin in 1980.He has been studying at the HFF Potsdam since 2004. For two years prior he has workedas a production assistant and unit manager for ORB/RBB, a German regional televisionnetwork. Furthermore, he has supervised several student movies at the dffb and the HFFas producer and 1. AD. He also worked for a number of TV-movie productions, most no-tably as location manager on two RBB Tatort productions.

Mark Chaet was born in Kramatorsk (Ukraine) in 1970.From 1988 until 1993 he studied classical violin at the music conservatory in Donezk. Heafterwards played in the chamber orchestra of the Donezk philharmonics, before coming toBerlin in order to complete a second program of studies at the Hans Eisler School of Music.He works as a composer and musician, such as in the project Trio Bravo.
