What is a simulated patient?
• Person who portrays a patient• Designed to improve skills for:– Undergraduates– Registered clinicians
What do simulated patients do?
• Realistically model a client’s interaction• Simple to complex simulations• Improve Communication skills• Basic assessment skills
Why do we want simulated patients?
• The aim is to improve the health of clients in all healthcare settings
• SPs shown to improve communication skills– Undergrads to registered clinicians
Who are we looking for?
• People interested in helping:– Health consumers be better cared for– Clinicians being better clinicians– Students being better clinicians
• SP skills– Excellent listeners– Focus on educational goals– Playing a role not an academy award performance!
What are the conditions?
• Hours• Locations• Pay: Varies from $25 - $33.12/hour for
contact time• No personal examinations involved• Some simulations require hospital gown
Training
• Specific training for individual roles• Coaching before exposed to clinicians• Only play roles that you’re comfortable with
Where to from here?
• Fill out application form• Successful applicants will be contacted in a
couple of days• Be ready for a training and rehearsal session
