Greetings to the faithful readers of La Voz Hispana. Our community is interested more every day through the various institutions on learning how they can improve their services, and for them to learn about our Latino culture and what we do in the community we live in.I was invited to two interesting activities in which I was asked to be part of a panel

on behalf of the Sioux Falls Spanish Speaking Community Association, where I serve as chair, at the Avera Health Rural Conference. !e topic in discussion was about how accepting diversity we help our community. !e other interesting activity I was asked to speak to an audience of professors and stu-dents at Augustana College about Puerto Rico and my participation within the Sioux Falls community.!e Latino community in the Dakotas has experienced accelerated growth; therefore, it is of high importance that institutions such as those that provide health services and education, like the ones in this example, take the steps to prepare for the changes this implies, as far as services, personnel, and learning about the needs and concerns our culture brings. Our Latino community is very loyal to those institutions which address it with respect and a digni"ed service - that which any other member of so-ciety expects. We are no di#erent nor require any special treatment, we just ask for treatment equal to the treatment others receive. I thank Avera Health and Augustana College’s invitation, two institutions concerned about the health and education of all of us who shape the Dakotas.

!"#$%&#'()&*+,%&#-./#(0 # $%& #-&.-From the beginning of time, man has felt the need to explain the mys-tery of life and death. Many civili-zations and cultures have created rituals to try and give meaning to human existence. To the indigenous peoples of Mex-ico, death was considered the pas-sage to a new life and so the de-ceased were buried with many of their personal objects, which they would need in the herea!er. From pre Columbian times, El Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead has been celebrated in Mexico, and other Latin countries. "is is a very special ritual, since it is the day in which the livings remember their

departed relatives. Sometimes, when people of other cultures hear for the #rst time about the celebration of the Day of the Dead, they mistakenly think it must be: gruesome, terrify-ing, scary, ugly and sad. Nothing fur-ther from the truth, Day of the Dead is a beautiful ritual in which Mexicans happily and lovingly remember their loved relatives that have died. Much like when we go to a graveyard to leave some lovely $owers on a tomb of a relative. "ey prepare “Altares” tables where they set all the food, beverages, alcohol, pictures, music, $owers, and cloths, that the loved relatives that have died liked or used before. It’s a big cel-ebration. So, Feliz Día de Los Muertos.

It appears that France has o!cially banned Muslim women from using the Muslim veil known as the burqa in public places. "e French see the veil as a symbol of women’s oppression, at the same time as the banner of fundamentalist Islam. French President Nico-las Sarkozy a#er heated debates in the French Parliament, amended the law and withdrew the word burqa, to avoid further controversy and the law only mandates the not being able to cover the face in public places like on the street public transport, shops, courts, hospi-tals, schools and government buildings. "e person that violates this law shall be $ned in the amount of approximately $ 190.00.

Many people were opposed to such a discrimi-natory law against certain ethnic and religious communities. Extremist groups including Al-Qaeda have sent messages through di%erent communication networks of threats to French leaders.

It is estimated by the French government that there are approximately 2,000 women who use or wear the burqa and the niqab. "e Muslim community is not happy with the law and rela-tions with the French leaders are not the best.

If we speak of oppression what the French gov-ernment is doing is not the best. You shouldn´t abolish and prohibit the use of a part of culture and religion with such a cultural meaning that have been part of this community for thou-sands of years.

Cancer changes things. And no matter how long you’ve known a person or how close you may be, it can be hard to know how to respond when cancer be-comes a part of their life. So from the organization that has worked closely with cancer pa-tients for over 4 decades, here are some American Cancer Society tips that can help you to be a friend to someone with cancer. 1. Be encouraging. One of the best things you can do is for a friend with cancer is to let them know you’re on their side and you’ll help in whatever ways you can. A shoulder to cry on, a sympathetic ear, even a smile can get past the barriers of the illness. Remember they are still the same person you know and love – cancer is a part of their journey, but it doesn’t de!ne them.

2. Listen.Let them talk. Rather than sharing stories about people you know with cancer, it’s more helpful to let your friend talk about what they are going through. Every experience is di"er-ent. Do let them know, however, that you’re familiar with cancer because you’ve been through it with someone else. Just let them pick up the conver-sation from there.

3. Respect their privacy. If someone con!des in you that they have cancer, don’t share the news with anyone else unless you have their permission to do so. It takes some people time to adjust to the diagnosis and share it with even their closest friends and family. Similar-ly, if your friend waited to tell you, don’t take it personally. Focus instead on how you can support that person now that you do know. 4. O!er assistance. Does your friend need someone to drive them to treatments? Watch the kids? Prepare meals? Run to the grocery store? Little things can help tremendously.

5. Don’t let cancer become the focus of every conversation. People with cancer do not always want to think or talk about their disease. #at can make them feel like their only iden-tify is as a “cancer patient.” Laughing and talking about other things are o$en welcome distractions. Let them take the lead.

6. Keep relationships normal. One of the most important things you can do is to treat the person with can-cer as normally as possible. Try to do as many things together as possible. If you used to play cards, play cards now. If you used to go to lunch, o"er to do that now, if they’re up to it.

!"234%5-)66'27)$'5

7. Be yourself. Most of all, be yourself and try not to worry about whether you are doing things the right way. Let your words and actions come from your heart. Your compassion and genuine caring are the best things you can express to your loved one right now.

We don’t usually think of cancer as a lifestyle disease. We think a person is unlucky if they have can-cer, and o!en we have a fatalistic outlook toward news that someone has developed cancer. “It’s in their genes,” we say. Or “stu" happens – the luck of the draw.”But only approximately 10% of cancers are based on genetics. #e vast majority of cancer cases are very much related to how we live our lives – our environ-ment, the food we eat, whether we exercise regularly, and the quality of our relationships. Within the last ten years medical researchers have been learning of the strong correlation between overweight/obesity and a person’s likelihood of developing cancer. It seems that fat cells are not merely passive storehouses of excess energy in the form of fat. Fat cells are metabolic fur-naces that spew out a wide range of chemicals, includ-ing hormones and in$ammatory agents that may o!en cause normal cells and tissues to become cancerous. Most people and even some physicians are un-aware of these facts. #e connection between lifestyle and heart disease, and between lifestyle and type 2 diabetes, seems obvious. But cancer, too, is a lifestyle

disease. #e very good news is that by creating the willingness to make healthy lifestyle choices, you’re making positive long-term changes in your health and well-being.Additional good news is that these choices are in your hands. Every day you get to choose a healthy lifestyle or not. Of course, some days or even some weeks just seem to go by without a real opportunity to do things that are healthy. You might be on a business trip in a country where it’s di%cult to &nd good, nutritious healthy food. It might also be di%cult to &nd the time to exercise when you’re on a travel schedule. #at’s OK, though, because lifestyle is a lifetime project. If you’re eating healthful nutritious food most of the time and doing daily exercise most of the time, you can take a week o" or even two weeks o" here and there. #e main goal is to be on a healthy lifestyle path the vast majority of the time.

Saving for retirement can be dif-!cult. Saving for your retirement while also funding your children’s college education may seem im-possible. If you didn’t start saving for tuition the moment your kids were born—and retirement is just around the corner—you might feel a bit overwhelmed about your !nances. But make note: if you haven’t or can’t set aside money for both tuition and retirement, it’s critical to secure retirement !-nances before funding your child’s education expenses. Financial as-sistance options to pay for school, including scholarships, grants and loans are available. Unfortunately, when it comes to funding retire-ment, these options don’t exist. AARP o"ers the following !ve tips to help you plan for these impor-tant !nancial decisions.

-."/#0&1&234$&*"+$5&6"'

1. Do the mathStart by understanding when you might retire, how much money you’ll need for retirement, and then crunch-ing some tuition numbers. To get a better picture of your !nancial future, use AARP’s retirement and college savings tools:www.aarp.org/readyforretirementwww.aarp.org/retirementcalculatorwww.aarp.org/socialsecuritybene!ts www.aarp.org/money/budgeting-sav-ing/

2. Talk to an advisorDecisions about retirement and col-lege are too important to leave on the back burner, so consider talking to a

!nancial advisor. Online bene!ts cal-culators can give you an idea of what your monthly retirement income will be, but an advisor can help you chart a course to establish and reach retire-ment goals, plus determine how much you can reasonably put toward your children’s education without damaging your retirement resources.

3. Turn to a College Funding Expert. In addition to a !nancial advisor, col-lege funding experts can identify well-known and little-known avenues to pay tuition and give prudent advice based on your circumstances..

4. Investigate Savings Options.Whether or not you’ve spoken to ad-visors yet, make sure your student completes a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), then inves-tigate savings options like your state’s

529 plans and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (ESAs). Don’t over-look custodial accounts, U.S. savings bonds and municipal bonds. Addi-tionally, Traditional IRAs allow you to withdraw money for your children’s education without a penalty, but never consider this option !rst – IRAs are for your retirement.

5. Put Your Kids to Work.Encourage your teens to work part-time to save for college. "is will pro-mote personal investment in their ed-ucation and give them a greater sense of value for their college experience.

Remember: retirement savings should always the top priority, followed by saving for education. With the help of !nancial experts, and your future col-lege student, you’ll be able to plot a course that you can stick to!

I give thanks to God always for all, and thanks to everyone who has trusted me and gave me his hand and told me, Mary you can do it.

What kind of music do you play? I love dance music, Merengue, Ba-chata, Cumbia, Pop Ballad, Maria-chi.

How did the growth of the Latino community in Sioux Falls? Great, we grow and our presence it’s a positive one, I am amazed when I hear an American speaking Spanish, or asking questions about our language, or di"erent kinds of Latin foods, they know that we are hard working people, and #ghters, unfortunately there are those who discriminate and see us di"erent, but we are many and will be many more.

What are your future plans related to music and singing? My future plans in music and singing, have my own band, I want a record, I want to get all

What other singers and mu-sicians are your favorites, or admire and have in!uenced your career? My favorite singers and I admire very much, Juan Gabriel, Marco Antonio Solís, Rocio Durcal, Selena, Olga Tanon, $alia. $ese artists have greatly in%uenced me with their voices and beautiful songs. I want to take a bit of mu-sic from each of them in my pre-sentations and other singers too.
