So this is the month that we all have to submit our taxes. It is hard to believe that the first revolution in this country was fought over taxation without representation, but today, we are taxed at every move.I am taxed when I fill up for gas,

taxed when I buy food or other products, taxed on my phone, taxed on my television and taxed for schools my children no longer attend – the list goes on and on.It used to be, before government

grew out of control, that I would wonder how much I would have to pay in taxes. Today, I often wonder how much the government will allow me to keep. With the constant growth of government and a debt of over $17 trillion, there is no place for taxes to go but up. There is only one problem. We have approximately 48 percent of Americans paying no taxes. With fewer people actually working since the Great Depression, government programs are out of control and spending is going up, which guarantees higher taxes.The tax structure is unfair because

they just keep changing the rules and punishing those who do work

hard and save. The richest counties in the world are those that surround the nation’s capital. We are quickly becoming slaves to the government, and the middle class is shrinking and losing financial stability.This loss of the

middle class is because those who really control power are large cor-porations and government. The corpora-tions buy influ-ence through lobbyists and campaign dona-tions, and the politicians gladly take this money and pass laws that only the big corporations profit from.Meanwhile, the

middle class is paying so much

in taxes that each day more and more families are living from day to day.As bad as this is, it actually gets

worse. If what we sacrificed in taxes actually went to help people, build infrastructure or make our community better in general, I could see some justification, but this is not the case. Each day, we hear about abuses of our tax dollars, like the millions spent in 2013 by the Environmental Protection Agency who flew first-class, rather than coach like the rest of us. There was a $150,000 bar bill for Nancy Pelosi’s airplane for one year when she was Speaker of the House. Just look how many senators and congressmen leave government as very rich people. It is not just their lavish pensions, it is all the connections they make while creating corporate welfare.

Tax Suggestions

• Ban paid lobbyists.• Ban any politician from being a lobbyist in any field in which they were in a committee.• Create a flat tax where every

one pays. That is right; rich, poor,

middle class and corporations all pay a flat tax with no deductions. We want to end corporate welfare. Just think about it – last year, General Electric paid no federal taxes. This kind of favoritism must end. Everybody should be treated equally.

• Demand the Federal government balance the budgeteach year.

• Limit the terms that someone can stay in Congress.

Las empresas compran influencia a través de los grupos de presión y las donaciones de campaña, y, los políticos con mucho gusto toman ese dinero y aprueban leyes que sólo benefician a las grandes empresas con fines de lucro.Mientras tanto, la clase media está

pagando tantos impuestos que cada día más y más familias están viviendo el día a día. Tan mala es la realidad que

empeora la situación. Si lo que hemos sacrificado en impuestos en realidad fuera para ayudar a la gente, se construirían infraestructura o en general haríamos de nuestra comunidad algo mejor, pude ver alguna justificación , pero este no es el caso. Cada día, escuchamos sobre los abusos de los impuestos contra nuestros dólares, al igual que los millones gastados en el año 2013 por la Agencia de Protección Ambiental los mismos que volaron en primera clase, en lugar de entrenador como el resto de nosotros. Había una Factura con 150.000 dólares por el avión de Nancy Pelosi por un año cuando era Presidente de la Cámara. Basta con observar como senadores y diputados que abandonan el gobierno salen como gente muy rica. No son sólo sus pensiones de lujo, son todas las conexiones que hacen para crear bienestar corporativo.

Sugerencias de Impuestos

• Prohibir el pagó a los mediadores.• Prohibición de cualquier político o mediador que se encuentre en cualquier campo o comité. • Crear un impuesto de tasa única,

donde todo el mundo paga. Es correcto que tanto ricos, pobres, clase media y todas las corporaciones paguen un impuesto de tasa única sin deducciones. No queremos bienestar corporativo. Sólo piensa en ello. El año pasado General Electric no pagó impuestos federales. Este tipo de favoritismo debe terminar. Todo el mundo debe ser tratado por igual.

• Demanda al gobierno federal a equilibrar el presupuesto de cada año.

• Limitar los términos para que nadie se puede quedar en el Congreso.

This month, the small, historic town of Gettysburg welcomes the Nicaraguan Ambassador to the U.S., Francisco Obadiah Campbell, to lecture at Gettysburg College. Ambassador Campbell will address the audience on political issues, with regional and state officials invited as guests. A potential topic for discussion during his visit will be a program encouraged by President Obama entitled “100,000 Strong in the Americas.” According to the State Department’s website, this “program underscores the critical relationship between broader educational opportunity and greater regional prosperity. Expanding study abroad opportunities for students, future leaders and innovators, strengthens bi-national relations and better prepares young people for the 21st century global workforce.” This program would surely benefit such places as Adams County as well as the country of Nicaragua. Imagine the possibilities.In our “Face to Face” column this

month, you will meet Carlos H. Perez III, an entreprenuer with a “failure-is-not-an-option” spirit. The article can be found on page 8. In this issue's “Gallery Space” department (page 14), we introduce you

Some cells die and others grow; it is just a reflection, on a small scale, of the greatness of life’s evolution. We must accept that body and mind become vulnerable to degenerative diseases as our immune system declines. Nonetheless, we should consider healthful choices and use preventable approaches to reduce painful and lethal diseases.To enjoy our whole life and find physical and emotional

stability, we should take appropriate care of ourselves. René Descartes in his Discourse on the Method taught us, “To be possessed of a vigorous mind is not enough. The prime requisite is rightly to apply it.” Whatever our choices, the most important thing is to follow and apply them consistently. That includes, but it is not limited to, giving love, sharing solidarity, procreating and taking care of your own body and environment. If you add to these basic guidelines the important components of faith and emotional/spiritual confidence, then you can commit yourself to a trustful relationship with God. Be grateful for what you get, express gratitude for what you have and live your life in a holistic way so you can enjoy a rewarding and meaningful life.

Nicaraguan Ambassador to the United States Set to Visit GettysburgApril 22-14

In a much-anticipated visit, Ambassador Francisco Obadiah Campbell Hooker of Nicaragua and his wife, Miriam Hooker, will travel from the Nicaraguan Embassy in Washington, D.C. to Gettysburg on April 22 to 24, participating in a wide range of activities while there.The ambassador’s first major event will be his presentation

as the invited speaker for the 2014 Blavatt Lecture, an annual event at Gettysburg College organized by the Blavatt family and the Eisenhower Institute. The Blavatt Lecture is designed for noted speakers to address political issues, with regional and state officials as invited guests, according to a Gettysburg College news release. On Wednesday, April 23, Ambassador Campbell will participate

in several events on and off the Gettysburg College Campus, including a guided tour of the battlefield and a formal dinner. Thursday, April 23 will feature an excursion to upper Adams

County to see farms of the Young Grower Alliance and a visit to the Rice Fruit Company. The ambassador and his wife will also meet with teachers and staff of the Gettysburg Area Schools. The day will conclude with a dinner meeting of the Executive Committee of Project Gettysburg/Leon, administered through

the Gettysburg College Center for Public Service. According to the college, one

potential topic for discussion during the Ambassador’s visit will be a program encouraged by President Obama, “100,000 Strong in the America’s,” an initiative that can benefit from cooperative efforts between citizens in places such as Adams County and Nicaragua.A noted foreign service professional, Ambassador Campbell’s

diplomatic career began in 1982 when he served on the staff of the Nicaraguan Embassy in Washington, D.C. Since then, he has had an extensive and influential career, including serving from 1997 to 2010 as an elected Nicaraguan member of the Central American Parliament. In addition to heading Nicaragua’s diplomatic mission to the United States, he is also president of the Center for Human, Civil and Autonomous Rights (CEDEHCA) in Nicaragua.

When Carlos H. Perez, III decided he was going to chase his American dream, his journey followed the road less traveled. When Hurricane Irene struck the East Coast in August of 2011, Guatemalan-Puerto Rican decendant Perez hopped in his car with his family and drove from Trenton, N.J. to Chambersburg, Pa.

“I wanted to get to safe shelter for my family. We arrived in Harrisburg, however every hotel and motel room was booked, so I kept driving and eventually ended up in Chambersburg at the La Quinta Hotel.” He’s never looked back. Perez is a self-starter in the truest sense of the word and a testament to the phrase, “Success is when preparation meets

opportunity.” After attending community college in Trenton, Perez was given a jewelry and music business by his uncle, which he grew into a successful venture. With

$1,500 given to him by his uncle and a “failure’s-not-an-option” entrepreneurial spirit, Perez ran the business and performed as a disc jockey, where the music mixes generated worldwide sales. “I played at concerts in Trenton and Philadelphia and had a blast. People really enjoyed the mixes I made, and it was successful. The key is having a passion for what you do.”

True to form, Perez had the same passion the day he decided that the wireless industry would be his next lucrative venture. “Someone came into the shop and was talking about the mobile phone business, and I had a ‘light bulb’ moment. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it, but I knew this would be my next chapter.” However, before he could blaze a trail in Trenton

with his new idea, Mother Nature had her own agenda, which detoured, but didn’t derail, Perez’s plans.

“The morning after we arrived in Chambersburg, I opened the phonebook, pointed my finger to the Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce and decided that I was not going back. My new chapter was going to begin here.” By August of 2012, Chambersburg Wireless had gone from dream to destination. Perez now resides in Chambersburg, and the business is thriving. “I love it here, the community, the people, the slower pace, even though I’m a fast-paced kind of guy, this suits me well.” Perez has since become involved heavily within his community, volunteering with various organizations, fundraisers and raising awareness among the Hispanic population as well as others. His message is simple: “Never give up, and never let anything take you away from your dream. With perseverance, it will happen.”

In the month of April, our Pennsylvania farmers have started plowing their farmland so that it can produce fruits and vegetables for us to consume all year long. This is important because fruits and vegatables are our primary

source of essential vitamins, minerals and fiber that help protect us from chronic diseases, like diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

Fruit & Vegetable IntakeAccording the PA Department of Health’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) data, only 24 percent of adult Pa. residents 18 years and older reported eating the recommended five or more fruits and vegatables each day. Worse yet, only 22 percent of adult PA Latinos and 19 percent of rural residents do a good job of eating their fruits and vegatables each day. I decided to compare the fruits and vegatables daily intake

of adult residents in these particular states. As shown in Table 1, in 2009, BRFSS Fla. and Ky. residents had similar fruits and vegatables intake patterns as Pa. residents. To no surprise, low fruits and vegatables daily intake is a national problem where three out of four adults in the United States are not eating the recommended five or more fruits and vegatables daily.

FiberThe usual intake of dietary fiber in the United States is 15

grams/day, much less than required. Generally speaking, adults need an intake of 25 to 35 grams of fiber per day. However, talk to your doctor about your specific fiber needs as well as the best way to meet your needs, especially if you have food allergies that prevent you from consuming certain foods. Three potential strategies that can help you increase your daily

fruits and vegatables intake: (1) consume adequate amounts of dietary fiber from a variety of plant foods. Why? Because each fruits and vegatables has its own unique characteristic, texture, flavor and health benefits; (2) eat more high fiber foods; and (3) shop at your local farmers market.

In my opinion, visiting your local farmers markets is an awesome place to start learning about more fruits and vegatables. First, local farmers markets are more likely to allow you to taste the fruits and vegatables prior to purchase and also offer favorite local recipes. This means that you don’t have to wait to get home to find out that the fruits and vegatables was “bad” and toss it in the waste basket. Second, farmers markets will allow you to have access to the freshest crop possible although frozen form is OK, too. Third, buying your fruits and vegatables at farmers markets helps support our local farmers and their businesses which helps generate money for our local community, keeping jobs in the U.S., particularly in Pa. Lastly, buying locally allows you to “meet” the farmers who grew the crops and even ask questions. That is, you know exactly where your food comes from as well as the person who planted the seeds and tended to that crop until the moment you purchased it. Some general

Previously, I wrote an

article to the readers of La Voz informing them that there was a new law, which changed and affected the rights of Pennsylvania citizens to vote. This law was called the Pennsylvania Voter ID Law. In March of 2012, a new law was enacted in Pennsylvania, which changed the rules that allowed a citizen to vote. The Pennsylvania Voter ID Laws were enacted with the intention to prevent voter fraud, and they would require individuals to present formal identification, such as a drivers license or a Pennsylvania Photo ID Card issued by PennDOT as well as other approved documents, before the individual would be allowed to vote. In the spring of 2012, as well as the Presidential election of 2012 and the primary of 2013, the volunteer staff at the voting booths were allowed to either request or inform voters of the change of law, which was going to require this additional identification.The law was appealed and, after

18 months of litigation, including three trials and a Preliminary Injunction preventing the new requirements from going into effect, a Commonwealth Court Judge, Bernard L. McGinley, ruled on January 17, 2014, that the new requirements for the State’s 8.2 million voters was unconstitutional. This law was passed by the Republican controlled legislature and signed in 2012 by Governor Tom Corbett. The law would have required voters to show their identification before casting a ballet, and it is no longer in effect. In the decision, Judge McGinely

said that the state had failed to present a convincing case as to why the new requirement was needed. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which argued for the law, could not point to any type of wide spread fraud.

PENNSYLVANIA VOTER IDENTIFICATION LAW STRUCK DOWN BY COMMONWEALTH COURT JUDGE BERNARD L. McGINLEYBy: Mark J. Kogan, Esq.

The ruling, which will be appealed to a higher state court, does not strike down the entire law, but it prohibits the enforcement of its central portion, the identification rules. Enforcement had been blocked by an earlier court, pending the resolution of the Constitutional issues. Pennsylvania has become one of the key states on the issue of voter identification laws. There are similar laws going on now in Texas, North Carolina and Arizona. In general, individuals who argue against voter identification state that the law limits participation, particularly among elderly, minorities and those with limited mobility through illness, as well as the poor, all individuals who would have a difficult time getting such identification. Following the change of the law

in January, Pennsylvania has now raised the actual cost of getting a Pennsylvania Photo ID Card issued by PennDOT. As of April, the cost has risen to approximately $28.00. It is your responsibility to be an

informed citizen. I am asking for your cooperation to spread the word and to use your voice to make sure that you and everyone you know is prepared to cast their vote, either in the primary or the general elections. ¡“Piense en la seguridad” y planifique para que el 2014 sea un año muy seguro! La seguridad es para todos. Padres y encargados del cuidado: debemos esforzarnos en crear un ambiente seguro para los que amamos y cuidamos. Aquí hay algunos consejos de seguridad de “sentido común.”

Seguridad para dormir: para bebés menores de 1 año de edad.Si su bebé es menor de 12 meses de edad, usted puede ayudar a

prevenir el SIDS (Síndrome de muerte súbita infantil), el ahogamiento y la estrangulación al seguir estos tres consejos:1. Coloque a su bebé boca arriba para dormir. 2. Retire toda la ropa de cama suave de la cuna.3. Ponga a su bebé a dormir en una cuna segura. Su bebé no debe dormir en una cama para adultos, en un sillón o en una silla solo, con usted ni con alguien más.

5. Los niños mayores que pesan más de 80 libras deben usar el cinturón de seguridad y viajar en el asiento de atrás.

6. Los niños menores de 13 años de edad deben permanecer en el asiento trasero, lejos del riesgo de lesión por la bolsa de aire del lado del pasajero.7. Los adultos deben usar siempre cinturones de seguridad cuando

Molly Barker often found inspiration on her runs. It was the kind of self-healing that would only come from miles on her feet.In 1996, Barker went one step further,

launching Girls on the Run (GOTR), a grass-roots, non-profit program to inspire young adolescent girls through running. Aimed at third- through fifth-graders, Girls on the Run, along with, Girls on Track, teaches girls to be healthy, inside and out.Girls on the Run is a simple idea:

Help young girls with self-doubt become strong, independent women. Running is incorporated, but the real momentum comes from the coaches and volunteers who impart wisdom.By 2011, the organization oversaw

188 individual councils in the United States, including one in the Capital Region.Twice-weekly 90-minute meetings

are a mix of discussion, question-and-answer time, team-building games and, of course, exercise through running. The girls prepare to participate in a non-competitive walk-or-run 5K held this year on Saturday, May 17 at the Milton Hershey School campus to celebrate their achievements and raise awareness for the program.Discussions include healthful eating

habits, gossiping, bullying and body image. Lessons are designed to give girls the tools to steer clear of “risky behaviors,” including drug or alcohol use, early sexual activity and a sedentary lifestyle. GOTR’s goal is to instill confidence in the next generation of young adults.Locally, Capital Area Girls on the

Run began in 2010 in two Dauphin County schools, with the financial support of PinnacleHealth as the founding sponsor. The mission, to inspire girls to become joyful, healthy and confident, closely

supports PinnacleHealth’s mission to improve the health and quality of life in Central Pennsylvania.Since then, Capital Area Girls

on the Run serves 37 teams in 33 local partner schools in Dauphin, Cumberland and Perry counties. More than 400 girls will participate in the third annual 5K in May.The true success of the program,

however, is not in the numbers, but rather in the words of the girls who participate.The most important thing I learned

from Girls on the Run is…

The month of April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) – a time to raise public awareness and to educate communities and individuals about how to prevent sexual violence. Last year, the YWCA Greater Harrisburg served over 1,500 individuals impacted by sexual violence who live in Dauphin and Perry counties. As part of this month’s

national awareness initiative, the YWCA Greater Harrisburg will host several events, including “Denim Day,” on which community members, elected officials, businesses and students are encouraged to wear jeans as a way to protest against myths that encompass sexual assault.
