hank you for attending the 13th annual Laughing Wa-ters bluegrass festival. After all this time, a little his-Ttory is in order. The first festival was organized to,

well, give the Middle Spunk Creek Boys a chance to play at the Minnehaha Falls bandshell, and we brought in some other bands (friends in the Minnesota bluegrass scene) to make it a bigger event. No city, park board, state, federal or other money has ever been involved (other than the Minne-apolis Park Board’s staff performing its normal duties.) All of the festival expenses are paid for by the businesses taking out ads in the program, by vendors paying a fee to present their goods, by the “Tip Jar” at the front of the stage, and in a couple of cases by some nice individuals making unsolicited donations. It’s always been a free concert! Bluegrass has always been a tough art form to define. It’s part 1930's Country with elements of folk, jazz, blues, Cajun, swing, gospel and who remembers what else thrown in from time to time. And despite the powerful musicianship dis-played, it’s also defined by the tight vocal harmonies. Un-like other musical genres, a large percentage of the average festival audience plays bluegrass too, at one level or another. The pickers on stage are always aware that the chances are good there’s someone watching who plays better than they do! In the Twin Cities area, you can bluegrass regularly on Fri-day and Saturday nights at Dulono’s Pizza (see their ad in this program). And on Saturday mornings, tune in to KBEM’s “Bluegrass Saturday Morning” show (88.5 FM). Also check out MBOTMA, the Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association.

ountain Heart is the band that has been fearlessly revolutionizing the way acous-Mtic music can be presented and played.

The band’s name has been synonymous with cut-ting-edge excellence in acoustic music circles since the group's creation in 1999. Widely known throughout the music industry for continually rede-fining the boundaries of acoustic music, the band has gained legions of loyal fans both as a result of their superlative musicianship, and more notably, their incomparably exciting live performances. Mountain Heart, or members of the band, have either won or been nominated for Grammy’s, ACM, CMA, and multiple IBMA Awards.

emember the name Nora Jane Struthers, because you’ll probably be hearing it in the near future in Rconjunction with bluegrass awards for best emerg-

ing artist and top female vocalist. Her self-titled debut CD is, simply put, a marvel that combines brilliant songcraft, a sultry yet honey-hued voice, and an inspired sense of per-sonal musical style.

Nora Jane and the Bootleggers won the band contest at Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 2010.
