Laboratory Safety
Mr. Reierson, Chemistry Lab
Use the lab only when directed by the teacher.
ChemicalsOnly use chemicals when directed by the teacher.
Make sure to read the labels carefully. Many containers will look the same.
Never taste anything in the lab. You must assume that everything is contaminated or toxic.
Accidents
Place broken glass and waste chemicals in appropriate and labeled containers.
Report all accidents, spills, and unsafe behavior to the teacher.
HairPull your hair back in the lab if it is hanging in your lab equipment – especially in the chemicals or Bunsen burner!!!
Hair may burn by fire and chemicals.

Pet Peeve #1: No body products
DO NOT SPRAY COLOGNE, DEODORANT, OR USE STRONG SMELLING LOTION IN THIS ROOM.
This is not your bathroom!We all have to share this room and some people have allergies!
Pet Peeve #2: Make-up
Absolutely NO makeup application in this room!!!
This is NOT your bathroom and products can become contaminated!!!
Absolutely no horseplay in the lab.
That includes:Wrestling movesFootball movesBasketball movesDance or cheer movesDemonstrating what someone else has doneTagPutting feet or legs on countersPicking up another studentThrowing anything (even if asked to throw it by another student)
EquipmentLocate this equipment in the room.
The drench shower is used for large amounts of chemicals, which we do not use in this class.
Depending on the injury:•Band aid/cold water•Trip to nurse•I call 911
The first aid kit on the wall contains band aids.
Consequences
Failure to follow all the previous safety rulesmay result in one or more of the following(depending on severity and number of offenses):• Removal from lab and loss of points for the
day• Removal from lab for remainder of the unit• Removal from lab for remainder of quarter• Removal from science class
