A Summary of LMI and Labour Market changes
Article 29 Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.
What is Labour Market Information (LMI)?
The Labour Market is the nominal market in which workers find paying work, employers find willing workers and wage rates are determined.
Article 34 Governments must protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation.
Information is gathered relating to the Labour Market. That information is collated both regionally and nationally.

• In Leeds, the number of jobs in advertising and media is 40% higher than national
average
• Use of innovative technologies is driving sector forward
Financial Services
• Leeds City Region = largest financial and professional services sector in UK outside
London• Very broad sector – how many roles can

Professional and business services
• Includes solicitors, accountants, auditors, architects, sales, recruitment, management
consultancy • Employment in this sector has grown from
152,000 in 2011 to 222,000. • Jobs forecast to rise by 30,000 by 2024
Hospitality, travel and tourism
• Includes hotels, pubs, bars, restaurants, holiday parks and passenger transport
• Rapidly growing sector for our region, enhanced by high profile events such as Tour de Yorkshire, MOBO awards and
British Art Show• Restaurant and bars scene in York, Leeds and Bradford
growing at greater rate than London• Expansion of Leeds Bradford Airport and increasing number
of rail routes into West Yorkshire aiding growth

Health and Bioscience
• The Leeds NHS Teaching Hospital Trust is the largest of its kind in Europe
• Biosciences = diverse group of industries and activities . Apply knowledge of the way plants,
animals and humans function• Includes manufacturing (e.g medical
instruments), working in prosthetics and developing new technology for online health
services
Low Carbon Industries
• Key growth sector for West Yorkshire – expected to continue rapid growth due to UK Government policies to tackle climate
change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure sustainable energy supplies
• Employment in so called “green jobs” expected to double by 2020
• In Leeds City Region, highest employment in low carbon industries outside South East of England.
Other important growth areas include….
• Education (accounts for almost 10% of employment in West Yorkshire)
• Construction (don’t be put off by Carillion!) Covers over 150 professions, and an increased demand for “sustainable”
construction skills• Health and social care – particularly due to needs of ageing
population• IT and Telecoms – demand for tech specialists expected to
grow by 30% by 2024• Transport, warehousing and logistics – e.g. LBA, Logic Leeds
distribution centres (Amazon and John Lewis Supply)
What about Retail? • Still the largest private sector employer in the UK
• Retail downturn – squeezed incomes, online shopping, rising overheads for retailers
• Store closures outstripped new openings in Yorkshire in 2017• Some retailers doing well but trends changing constantly
• Forecast – 105,000 vacancies in next ten years
Key factors that will impact on careers in the future
• Increased pace of digital and technological change = more demand for STEM skills. Some operative jobs may disappear
due to automation• People living longer – health & social care; technology to
enable independent living• Globalization – the world becoming more inter-connected
therefore marketplace more competitive• Environment – energy saving and efficiency
• Social changes and values – more time and money to spend on leisure and luxury
