St Urho Club NightHosted by VFC’s Purpurit

on Friday EvEning, the 14th of March at the Scandinavian Centre we all had a good time

with lively irish music, good friends, time to enjoy chocolate and green beer, and to play a challenging word game of ‘Places in British Columbia’.

on the menu, we had tasty ‘grasshopper’ soup (need to get the recipe!) with ‘siskonmakkaroilla’. For dessert, we had pancakes with mixed berry jam.

Well, after that, we were ready to listen old St urho Erkki Saari (he had two years of service). He told us a little bit about the history of St urho.

“are you ready to call new St urho?” someone called. “Frank, Frank!” — he was honoured to do his best job. We all were very happy to sing ‘grasshopper, grasshopper go to #@!/’ and save our wine harvest this year. The evening continued with music and dancing. What else you could ask for?

VFC Sports Report2013 was a good year for vFC Sports. We continued to run events that we have offered in previous years, and built upon previous success. The Paavo nurmi run gained a new sponsor – lindome Structures – and had had the highest number of participants in many years. The Wife Carrying Contest was a big hit as always – drawing many spectators and media from all over the lower mainland & further afield.

We also held three ice skating events – one in March for the FinnFun students & friends, and two in the winter – Thanksgiving and Boxing day that were open to everyone.

looking forward to the upcoming year, vFC Sports will be working closely with the newly formed Scan-Sports Committee to bring a wider variety of sports and activities to the Scandinavian Centre. So far this year there have been several floorball evenings in conjunction with the vFC pub nights, a Scandinavian Centre Sunrun team, and Sunday morning runs at Burnaby lake.

So far in 2014 we’ve held the lumileikkipäivä - Snow Fun day at Cypress Mountain/Hollyburn Ski area and a sports club Pub night. We look forward to more events throughout the year, and as always, wel-come suggestions from members.

West Coast News ReportWest Coast news had very good year. one of largest articles was vFC British Columbia War veterans book and film project. it started fall of 2010 continued until July 2013. WCn have contribution writers aila asi-kainen from ‘aurinkoranta’, Jennifer Salokannel from ‘northern lights’, Eero Sorila and kalevi Sissonen, we had been getting a lot of articles from all different people and Finnish groups from Scandinavian Centre and Finnish Church’s, Thank you all.

income has gone up from advertising. Christmas greetings and donations did bring a little over $2000, that paid well of printing for the Christmas issue which was 24 pages. Finnish Society of Finland gave to WCn ‘Media donation’ $642.90.

Expenses have gone a little bit up, usual mailing gone up January 16th 2013, and Printing beginning of September 2013, this price included higher quality of paper (paper was quite ‘muddy’).

Mailing had been work well; usually customers get paper in the 2 – 3 days. West Coast news going to around Canada, uS, over Seas, and British Columbia about 700 copies, included free copies to advertisers. and this is good time to remind; please send your new address if moving.

all income was $29.336.57, and Expenses $28.147.20. Future of WCn is kind of open, we need new ideas, and that includes new editor.

FinnFun Report School year 2013-2014School year 2013-2014 started on September 03, 2013 and will end on May 24, 2014.

Board members are Selja nyberg (Chair), karoliina kotanen (Secretary), Tonya raworth (Treasurer), Edna alle (Parent rep), anne Bruin (Parent rep) and Johanna Mantsinen (Webmaster).

our current teachers are: Tuomo neuvonen and riitta kutvonen (adults), Marika Seager (principal te-acher), anne Tuppurainen, katja kortelainen and Tiia lustig. Taimi ahonen is our volunteer teacher.

Children’s classes This school year, FinnFun has 20 students. There is one class on Tuesdays with 12 students enrolled. The class is divided during the class for different assignments. The teachers are anne Tuppurainen and katja kortelainen. Taimi ahonen is volunteering on Tuesdays. Saturday has one class as well, with 8 students enrolled. With two teachers, anne Tuppurainen and Marika Seager (Tiia substituting Marika during december-March), the class is divided during class for different assignments.

Adults’ classes in the fall there were two courses: Beginner and non-beginner. Both courses met 10 times, two hours at a time. Beginner class had 13 and non-beginner 11 students. in the spring there are again the same courses, and they are same length. Beginner class has 8 and non-beginner has 10 students. all courses are taught by Tuomo neuvonen. new this spring is the adult conversation class. There will be three classes (March 11, april 8 and May 13) over spring term. Classes cost $10 each. The class is meant for (a) fairly advanced non-native speakers of Finnish who want to maintain their speaking skills and (b) speakers of Finnish who want to bring their speaking skills up-to-date. Focus is on every-day practical speaking skills. if the class turns out to be successful, there will be a full course next year.

• Lumileikkipäivä/SnowFunDay,February15,2014at Cypress Mountain. vFC Sports Club is organi-zing this event with FinnFun. Cross country skiing, tobogganing and tubing.

• FamilyCampwillbeheldonSaturday,May31,2014at the Scandinavian Centre. all Finnish families are welcome. it's a fun-filled day with crafts and games and Finnish food.

• AttheMidsummerFestivalinJuneFinnFunisplan-ning to host the craft table in the Finland tent.

Kirjaston raportti kirjastolla oli jälleen hyvä vuosi. kirjoja hankittiin pit-kin vuotta melkein koko määräahalla eli $2.500 dolla-rilla. kuten aina ennekin, kirjaston ystävät ovat tuoneet kirjat Suomesta, joten postikuluihin ei ole käytetty yhtään rahaa. Suomi-Seuralta saatiin jälleen 20 uutta kirjaa lahjoituksena.

Library ReportThe library has had another good year. We kept bu-ying books all year, and spent almost the full budget of $2,500. as always, friends of the library brought the books in their suitcases, so no money was spent on shipping. We also got 20 new books as donation from the Finland Society.

Marja Hammond has volunteered for organizing and covering the books. Books with covers look much nicer and last much longer.

i would like to thank the club for its continued support of the library. The library has very many very happy readers.

Purpurit ReportPurpurit members continue to dance on Tuesday evenings at the Scandinavian Community Centre. Practices take place from January to december with a two-month break in the summer. our dance instruc-tor this year has been riitta Huttunen with help from Helena rutkowski and a few other members. The group continues to learn new dances while also practicing and performing previously learned dan-ces. We are helped in this endeavour by raul Segas who records our performan-ces and some practices for posting on youTube.

There were 21 paid members for the year 2013, although only six to eight couples were usually present at practices and for per-formances. in 2013 Purpurit performed at the kalevala celebration at the Finnish Manor and at the annual Midsummer Festival. all members of the group were involved in the March Club night with a St. urho theme. in november all of Purpurit were involved in the Scandinavian Craft Fair. This one-day Craft Fair is the group’s primary source of fund raising, and invol-ves many days of preparation prior to the event. The Scandinavian Craft Fair is a popular event, drawing large crowds to the centre. With the monies accumu-lated from several craft fairs, Purpurit is planning to attend nordlek-2015 in denmark.

due to multiple health issues, not all members of Purpurit are still able to participate in active dancing practices and performances. Everyone participates in the groups’ social and fund raising events and a gre-at time is had by all. Purpurit would welcome new dancers, young or old. Please come out on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm and get some EXErCiSE while having Fun.

Purpurit members help support the Scandinavian Centre and some members are active on the Board of the vancouver Finlandia Club (vFC). all members support vFC events. as required as a sub-group of vFC, Purpurit held its annual general Meeting on February 4, 2014. The group elected Erkki Saari as President, and reta Staley agreed to continue as the Purpurit representative to vFC meetings.

Suomalais-kanadalaisen dokumenttifilmin ensi-ilta Finnish-Canadian documentary film premiere

BlueShore Centre of the Performing arts -teatterissa. kolmihenkisen työryhmän, eli ohjaajan ja tuottajan Satu Bellin, kuvaajan ja editoijan ilkka uiton ja vastaavan tuot-tajan eli minun lähes neljän vuoden työ kulminoitui tähän tapahtumaan.

Sali oli täynnä kun david laulainen, vancouver Finlandia klubin puheenjohtaja, toivotti yleisön tervetulleeksi. koko suomalainen yhteisö oli saapunut katsomaan filmiä sankoin joukoin. Mukana oli myös paljon Skandinavian keskuksen norjalaisia, tanskalaisia, ruotsalaisia ja islantilaisia, sekä tietysti kanadalaista yleisöä. david lau-lainen esitteli ralph Sultanin, 80-vuotiaan West vancouver-Capilanon kansanedus-tajan. ralph Sultan yhdisti puheessaan mainiosti ruotsalaisen syntyperänsä ja tietou-tensa Suomen vaikeasta asemasta kahden suurvallan välissä toisen maailmansodan aikana. ralph Sultania seurasi Burnabyn kansanedustaja richard lee, joka luovutti Brittiläisen kolumbian hallituksen puolesta kunniakirjan illan isännille, eli Brittiläi-sen kolumbian sotaveteraaneille ja vancouver Finlandia klubille.

Brittiläisen kolumbian sotaveteraanien puheenjohtaja Esko kajander luki Suomen Sotaveteraaniliiton kanadan piirin puheenjohtajan reijo viitalan tervehdyksen, ja ojensi kanadan piirin kunniakirjan Satulle ja minulle.

Filmin vastaavana tuottajana kerroin puheessaan kuinka kaikki oikein alkoi. iso-enoni, ensimmäinen talvisodassa kaatunut upseeri antti nikula, oli innoituksena rintamalta länsirannikolle –projektille. Päätös tallentaa vancouverin suomalaisten sotaveteraanien tarinat tehtiin huhtikuussa 2010. Haastattelut aloitettiin heti, sillä aika oli käymässä vähiin. Projektin haastattelemista 30 veteraanista kahdeksan oli ehtinyt poistua keskuudestamme ennen ensi-iltaa. Haastatteluissa etsittiin myös vastausta kysymykseen, miksi niin monet veteraanit muuttivat pois Suomesta? vai-kuttiko sota siihen? vastaukset olivat hyvin yllättäviä.

ohjaaja Satu Bell mainitsi puheessaan, kuinka filmi oli hyvin pienen ryhmän työn tulos, ja kuinka jokainen veteraani olisi ollut filmin arvoinen. 66 minuuttia pitkä filmi kun on vain pieni leikkaus kaikesta siitä materiaalista, mitä haastatteluista kertyi. kirjassa on jokaisen veteraanin pitempi tarina. Satu kertoi myös, kuinka muu-tama päivä ennen ensi-iltaa hän soitti ilkalle, koska tarvitsi tämän apua tekstityksen suhteen. ilkka oli siskonsa luona denman-saarella, ja vastasi puheluun teltasta. oli sateinen päivä ja ilkka piti sadetta teltassa. Mutta teltan ulkopuolella hyrskytti generaattori, jotta ilkka pystyi lataamaan tietokoneensa ja editoimaan Satun tarvitse-mat tekstit.

Tilaisuus oli moneen otteeseen hyvin koskettava. yksi koskettavimmista hetkistä oli kun Eino kyynäräinen, 90-vuotias toisen maailmansodan veteraani, astui puhuja-korokkeelle kertomaan muutostaan Suomesta kanadaan 1950-luvulla – ilman englan-nin kielen taitoa, tuttavuuksia ja lähes rahattomana.

Mari Petznek esitti filmiä varten säveltämänsä tunnusmusiikin, ”näkemiin” –kap-paleen, joka pohjautuu Sakari kujansuun tarinaan. Mari esitti kappaleen englanniksi ja suomeksi kitaran säestyksellä.

itse filmi ei jättänyt kovin monta silmää kuivaksi, mutta yleisö sai myös nauraa moneen otteeseen: ”aivan mahtava elokuva ja tosi hienosti järjestetty ilta. onnitte-lut teille kaikille! leikkaus ja editointi aivan omaa luokkaansa, me katsojat elimme

veteraanien mukana; ilot ja surut. vanhat filmit arkistoista ja uudet luontokuvat nivoutuivat saumattomasti yhteen!” kommentoi yksi, ” rintamalta länsirannikolle -filmin esitys oli aivan mahtava. Se todellakin kirpaisi sydämestä. Mielestäni paras sodasta kertova dokumentti. Hyvin liikuttava kokemus…Mari lauloi ja soitti kuin enkeli. oli myös hienoa, kun annoitte veteraaneille kirjan muistoksi. Tätä filmiä pi-täisi päästä katsomaan uudestaan. Toivottavasti kirjoja on myös painettu runsaasti,” jatkoi toinen.

näytös sattui samalle päivälle kuin veteraani usko arvosen syntymäpäivä. arvo-nen oli myös ensimmäinen projektin haastattelema veteraani. koko sali lauloi Hap-py Birthday to you 89-vuotiaalle arvoselle Esko kajanderin johdolla.

Filmiä seurasi yllätysseremonia paikalla oleville veteraaneille. kirjoittamani Siirto-laisuusinstituutin julkaisema suomenkielinen kirja oli Suomessa saatu painosta vasta edellisen viikon lopulla. Siirtolaisuusinstituutin johtaja ismo Söderlingin nopean toiminnan ansiosta kirjat saapuivat jo kuutta päivää myöhemmin vancouveriin, ja olivat täten valmiina ojennettaviksi veteraaneille. Jokainen paikalla ollut haastateltu veteraani tai hänen leskensä sai oman kirjan mukaan.

Haluan kiittää kaikkia veteraaneja kaikesta. Ja kiitos kun kerroitte tarinanne meil-le. kiitokset myös sotaveteraanien puheenjohtajalle Esko kajanderille, joka hoiti osan lipunmyynnistä, järjesti bussinkyydin Skandinavian keskukselta Capilanon teatteriin, ja kirjoitti veteraanien kutsut yhdessä Petteri Mökkösen kanssa.

FroM THE FronT To THE WEST CoaST: the recollections of the War vete-rans in vancouver had an amazing premiere on March 9 at the north vancouver

BlueShore Centre of the Performing arts Theatre. The premiere was the culmina-tion of four years of hard work by three people: director and producer Satu Bell, director of photography and editor ilkka uitto, and myself, executive producer leena kelly.

The Chair of the vancouver Finlandia Club, david laulainen, greeted the audien-ce. The whole Finnish community had come to watch the film. among them were also many of the norwegians, danes, icelanders and Swedes of the Scandinavian Centre, and of course many Canadians. david laulainen introduced ralph Sultan, the 80-year-old West vancouver-Capilano Mla. in his speech, ralph Sultan very nicely integrated his Swedish ancestry and his knowledge of Finland’s difficult po-sition between two superpowers during World War ii. ralph Sultan was followed by Burnaby Mla richard lee, who, on behalf of the British Columbia government, presented a certificate to the two hosts of the premiere, the Finnish War veterans in BC and the vancouver Finlandia Club. Esko kajander, Chair of the Finnish War veterans in BC passed on the congratulations of the Canadian district of the Fin-nish War veterans’ association to Satu and me.

in my speech, as executive producer, i went back to how it all started, how the spark for the film was the speech i gave at Finland’s independence day dinner, at the Scandinavian Centre, in december 2009. The speech was about my great uncle, who became the first officer to die in the Winter War. Finland was the only count-ry to bring its soldiers home. yet, my great uncle never returned home – his body was never found.

inspired by the story, Satu Bell wanted to collect the stories of the Finnish war veterans in vancouver. Satu would interview and take the photographs, and i would write the book. When Satu found ilkka uitto, our director of photography, we suddenly became a film crew.

We had to start shooting straight away, to capture the veterans’ stories as soon as possible. Eight of the veterans on the film have since passed away.

director Satu Bell mentioned how small the crew of the film was, with just three people. She felt that each of the veterans would have deserved a film of their own, and that the film, at 66 minutes, is but a snapshot of all the interviews. However, the book contains just about the entire interviews.

it was a touching afternoon, especially when World War ii veteran, 90-year-old Eino kyynäräinen took the podium. He talked about his move to Canada in the early 1950’s – with no English, friends or acquaintances and hardly any money.

Mari Petznek performed the theme song Farewell in Finnish and English. She wrote the song and lyrics specifically for the film — in two hours.

The Film itself made the audience live with it, the griefs and the sorrows. Some of the comments were: “… amazingly beautiful, educational and emotional docu-mentary…in honour of the Finnish veterans of WWii who are and have been living in the vancouver area. Beautiful scenery, clips of wartime accompanied by moving interviews from a cross section of Finnish men and women who defended their homeland against all odds against russia. The stories were from the hearts of those

who fought for their country and it was an extraordinarily emotional and moving 66 minutes accompanied by a beautiful song with guitar music written and sung especially for the film. This was an extremely professional production in Finnish with English subtitles with leena, and three others creating a memorable educa-tion for us all…With awe and humble thanks.” and “irja and i have never been so touched with any documentary or a movie than what you three have done. We were so impressed with your documentary… We laughed and cried all the way through with our hearts. What also made this special was the fact that the theatre was full!”

The screening happened to be the same day as veteran usko arvonen’s 89th birt-hday. He was the first veteran interviewed by the project. Esko kajander conducted when the whole audience sang Happy Birthday to you.

The film was followed by a surprise ceremony. Copies of the Finnish book, writ-ten by me and published by the Finnish institute of Migration in Turku, Finland, had been sent straight from the printing press to vancouver. The books arrived on time for the premiere. Each veteran, interviewed by the project, and present at the premiere, got a hard cover book to take home.

i would like to thank the veterans for all they have done, and for telling their sto-ries and opening their homes to us. Thank you to the Finnish War veterans in BC, and its chair Esko kajander. it has been a pleasure to work with you. Esko kajander and Petteri Mökkönen sent the veterans’ invitations, and Esko sold tickets and orga-nized a bus from the Scandinavian Centre to the Capilano Theatre. i would like to thank ilkka uitto, who unfortunately could not be at the screening, for filming and editing. Thank you for vFC Chair david laulainen for hosting and taking care of the invitations. i would like to thank the Finnish Canadian rest Home and Manor and their staff, for getting many of the veterans ready for their interviews. The rest Home bus also brought its resident veterans to the screening. Thank you, Mari, for composing and performing. Thank you to Marja-liisa Hassinen for the photography.

i would like to thank the whole Finnish Community for all the help we received. it was truly a community effort and absolutely amazing. My Canadian neighbour told me: ”That was incredible support you received!” and he was right. Thank you to EvEryonE who took time out of their busy lives and came to support us on a sunny afternoon. you made this event what it was. Thank you!

recollections and anecdotes to brighten these essential little moments in the lives of our Finnish World War ii veterans here in British Columbia. Please acknowledge them now — leena and Satu, if you’d please stand. Thank you.

at this international premier of From the Front to the West Coast: The Recollections of the Finnish War Veterans in Vancouver we have a unique opportunity to under-stand what our veterans as young Finns faced during this traumatic time and ap-preciate how and why they left Finland after the war to start a new life in Canada.

i aM HonourEd to be asked to say a few words about Finland and its connecti-on with British Columbia, in connection with the documentary movie “From the

Front to the West Coast,” which we are about to see.Canada has always been welcoming to persons from Finland, and in particularly

to those veterans who endured the travails of World War ii. a work such as this documentary is a great tribute to the experiences many Finnish Canadians shared, and of the support Canada gave them in their time of need.

i am proud to be part of the legacy of Scandinavians in British Columbia, and have visited those countries quite often over the years.  With regret, i cannot claim to be Finnish by background; since my parents were Swedish. However, my mot-her grew up in norrland, just across the gulf of Bothnia, and accessible to Finland when the gulf froze over with a good pair of skis. So i was close!

i have been around this world for so long, i can – just like your veterans – re-member when russian decided to invade Finland in the autumn of 1939. i had just started grade one at Florence nightingale School in Mount Pleasant, and war in Europe broke out five days after i started classes – to be followed by five years of war. and only a few weeks after that first class at school, russia invaded Finland because of its refusal to hand over large chunks of their country. For six year old boys such as myself, it was all very exciting – i made myself a toy rifle out of a pie-ce of wood – and was only later that we came to realize the true horrors of war.

The russians invaded with 45 divisions of army troops, an air force many times larger than Finland’s small air force, and believed it would all be over in a week or two. They did not understand the stubbornness and bravery of the small Finnish army which defeated them in the Winter War! Even Josef Stalin, i understand, grudgingly admired the Finns for being much better fighters than his own soldiers.

But the russians learned from their mistakes, and next time, invaded with overwhelming force and forced Finland to surrender. They had learned somet-hing about winter war, and i suspect this had something to do with their defeat of Hitler’s army when germany invaded russia a couple of years later. So you might say that by teaching this lesson to the russians, Finland helped decide the final

ja leena kellyn kirjoittama kirja ”Suomen rintamalta kanadan länsirannikolle” ovat valmiit. dokumentti esitettiin ensimmäistä kertaa maaliskuun 9 päivä, 2014. Tapahtuma paikka oli Blueshore Financial Centre Teatteri, Capilano university. Esityksen jälkeen haas-tateltut veteraanit, taikka heidän puoliso tai perheen-jäsen saivat kovakantisen erikoispainoksen kirjasta tekijöiden allekirjoituksineen.

kolme nuorta suomalais-syntyistä henkilöä ovat täy-sin vastuussa, että hyvin liikkuttava, historiallinen ja kultuurisesti erikoinen dokumentti ja kirja on tuotu päivänvaloon. nämä henkilöt ovat: leena kelly, Satu Bell ja ilkka uitto.

dokumentti on hyvin ajankohtainen varsinkin vete-raanien ja lottien ikäpolvea ajatellen. Työ oli energiaa ja aikaa vaativa. Ensiesitys oli mahtava todiste, että tä-käläisessä suomalaisessa yhteisössä vielä elää veteraaneja ja lottia kunniottava henki!

Suomalaisen Sota veteraani yhdistyksen puolesta kiitän tuottajia leena kelly, Satu Bell ja ilkka uitto vä-symättömästsä työstä dokumentin tuotannon suhteen, ja leena kellyä kirjan kirjoittamisesta. Molemmat osoit-tavat kunnioitusta veteraaneille, kiiToS!

outcome of World War ii.i worked alongside Finnish workers at the atlas

Copco factory in Stockholm in 1959. i learned that they worked hard and played hard! it was sometimes hard to keep up to them in schnapps.

There was another connection: my father, a house painter, employed a man named Bjorklund, , who had left his wife and young family behind in Finland when the war came. My mother sent food parcels to that family, and after the war when i worked in Stockholm, my mother joined me and we arranged for her to visit the family she had assisted during the war. They drove many miles down to Helsinki to see her and thank her for this much-needed food.

So the histories of British Columbia and Finland are intertwined and we have much to learn and admire about the accomplishments of the Finnish people. Thank you to vancouver Finlandia Club and to the Finnish War veterans in BC for helping to preserve these important memories for future generations in Finland, Canada, and the world.

aFTEr SoME Four yEarS of hard work and effort, “From the Front to the Wescoast” docu-

mentary and a book authored by leena kelly, “Suo-men rintamalta kanadan länsirannikolle” are finished. The premiere for the documentary was on the 9th of March, 2014 at the Capilano university’s Blueshore Financial Centre Theatre. after the showing each of the interviewed veterans received a special edition hardcover book autographed by the author.

Three Finnish born young people, leena kelly, Satu Bell and ilkka uitto are totally responsible for produ-cing a very moving, historically and culturally signi-ficant documentary. also leena kelly authored the companion book.

The documentary is very timely when considering the advanced years of the veterans. The production required a lot of energy and time. The premier provi-ded irrefutable proof that, within the Finnish Commu-nity, there still exists the respect and gratitude for the sacrifices made by the veterans.

on behalf of the Finnish War veterans in B.C. i wish to express our gratitude to leena kelly, Satu Bell and ilkka uitto for producing the documentary and to lee-na kelly for authoring the book. THank you!

The second world war touched our grand-parents directly as they were adults with small children at that time. Their way of thinking and managing life was passed onto coming generations, still affecting my generation one way or another. kummemmin mietiskellä, kunhan se on väriltään musta. ongelmia tulee vain jos on tarkoitus tavata ensimmäistä kertaa tunte-maton henkilö. laittamalla kutsuviestiin kuvaus ”miula on mustat vaatteet, siniset silimät ja vaaleet hiukset” aiheuttaa vain hilpeyttä. niinpä iloisen värikäs Marime-kon olkalaukku olikin tuona keikkailtana tarpeen, jotta vFCn arpomat pääsylippujen voittajat löysivät minut. Sari, 40 vuotta vancouverssa asuneena, ja Christina, täällä syntyneenä alta kolmikymppisenä nuorena naisena, olivat onnekkaat voittajat. illan

VFC Children of bodom keikalla Commodore ballroomssa 25 helmikuuta 2014

aikana tapasin myös muutamia muita metallimusiikin suomalaistaustaisia ystäviä. vaikuttaa siltä että menemällä kunnon möykkämestaan löytää niitä suomalaisia, jotka harvemmin käyvät vFCn tapahtumissa.

itse keikka koostui kolmen eri bändin seteistä. Ensimmäiseksi lämmitti niskalihaksia Fär-saarten Tyr melodisella viikinkimetallilla. Seuraavaksi väkeä liikutti thrash metallia soittava death angel uSasta, josta parhaiten jäi mieleen hyväkuntoinen ja –hiuksinen basisti. Ei kaikesta musiikista tarvitse tykätä, mutta ulkomusiikilliset arvot on joskus huomioitava. illan pääesiintyjänä suomalainen Children of Bodom pisti porukan vellomaan ja letin heilumaan. olihan kiva nähdä miten suomimetalli edelleen myy, vaikkakin tässä joogapöksyjen luvatussa maassa näiden konserttien määrä on valitettavan vähäinen. — Heviletti heiluen, Anita Kapanen

aMong THE oTHEr 800 black-dressed people it would have a challenge to find person you never have met. giving a description of having black clothes, blue eyes and long blond hair would not have separated

me from any other female from the crowd. This is where brightly coloured Marimekko-bag comes handy, and the vFC raffled ticket winner Sari and Christina found me to say Hello. Sari has lived past 40 years in lower Mainland, and Christina was born here some 25 years ago. during the evening i met other Canadians with Finnish heritage.

The gig itself started with gorgeous warm up by Tyr from Faroe islands. They were followed by a thrash metal band death angel from uSa. not my kind of metal but have to give points to the hair of the base guitarist. The head liners, Children of Bodom, clearly was the long-waited and expected guest. Crowds were very pleased with the set they played and the black mass of metal-graving Canadians (or Finns) moshed to their hearts liking. as a Finn i was proud of the metal exports that do not come often enough to these yoga pant shores.

lauTTa kulkEE vajaassa tunnissa vancouverista langdaleen, joka on

mannermaalla ja sijaitsee vastapäätä vancouverin saarta. vuoren rinteeltä, missä Satu aila asuu, näkee merelle ja vuorille. luonto hänen kotinsa ympä-rillä on kanadalaista sademetsää. Satu on menettänyt vuoden aikana kolme kissaa, sillä puumat ja ilvekset liikkuvat lähimaisemissa. Joskus osuu pihaan karhu ja kojootit ulvovat öisin. Mai-semista tulee mieleen vanha elokuva kultaisen lännen Tytöstä, jossa laulava nelson Eddy esitti punatakkista kanadalaista ratsupo-liisia.

Satua voisi sanoa villin lännen tytöksi, mutta hä-nen miehensä Peter Brampton ei ole ratsupoliisi, vaan opettaja, joka kulkee lautalla toimeensa kaupunkiin. lapsia heillä on kolme, samoin kissoja, koiriakin pari ja kaneja.

Satu aila syntyi Torontossa. isänäiti oli kanadan-ranskalainen ja isoisässä on ojibva – intiaaniheimoon kuuluneen louis realin verenperintöä. äiti on suo-malainen ja Sadun kolmessa lapsessa on englantilaista syntyperää. ”Tunnen itseni etupäässä kanadalaiseksi”, sanoo Satu,” mutta iso osa sydämestani ja juuristani on Suomessa. olen käynyt siellä sukuloimassa ja koko ikäni täällä kanadassa olen asunut lähellä suomalaisia isovanhempiani, jotka muuttivat tänne rannikolle vuonna 1978. vaikka en puhukaan suomea, olen jo lapsena oppinut muutaman suomalaisen kansanlau-lun ja ”mummi” pitää huolta siitä, että ne eivät pääse unohtumaan.”

Sadun suomalainen äiti on aina ollut niin suomalais-mielinen -kuin kielinenkin ja suomalaisuus on ollut hänen ja isovanhempien kodissa ja elämässä tarkeitä.

”kun olin 4–vuotias”, sanoo Satu,” muutimme ensin vancouveriin ja sieltä tänne länsirannikolle. Siksi olen tavannut vain harvoin isäni sukulaisia, jotka kaikki asuvat tuhansien kilometrien päässä. Tiesin omaavani intiaaniverta isäni puolelta. Ehkä se tuli minussa esiin piirustuksissani, sillä jo lapsesta alkaen piirsin vain

hevosia ja myöhemmin minulla oli oma hevonen, jolle annoin nimeksi indiana.”

Satu kertoo, että alkuperäisväestö on häntä aina kiinnostanut ja että hän nuorena tyttönä lahti kerran Monta-naan, missä pidettiin eri intiaaniheimo-jen kokoontuminen, pow-wow.

”Suurimman osan elämästäni olen saanut asua lähellä merta ja myös lä-hellä Secheltin, SHiSHalH, heimon alkuperäisväestöä. Secheltin intiaanit ovat bisnesmiehiä. He ovat rakenta-neet paikkakunnalle elokuvateatterin

ja ostokeskuksen ja heidän lentokoneensa liikennöi-vät niin vancouveriin kuin vancouverin saarellekin. Heillä on myös taiteellista kykyä tehdä totem paaluja ja erilaisia muistoesineitä. naiset kutovat ja punovat koreja.”

Ehkä verenperintönä hän on esi-isiltään saanut it-sekin käsien taidon, sillä pari vuotta sitten hän halusi tehdä omille lapsilleen, Byronille 11, ailalle 10, ja anna Sofialle 5, pehmoleluja itse, koska hän ei halunnut ostaa heille muovileluja. näin syntyi Sadun käsistä ensimmäi-nen kala, sitten niitä tuli lisää kai-kenvärisiä ja kokoisia. kaloja seurasi merenneidot , merihevoset ja meri-tähdet. ystävien ja omaisten kehoituk-sesta hän lähti niitä myymään kesän markkinoille, crafts fair’iin. Sieltä hänet kutsuttiin vancouverin messu-jen suureen käsityönäyttelyyn, missä kokeneet artistit esittelevät tuottei-taan, käsitöitä, lasi- ja saviesineitä. Mikä yllätys olikaan, kun seuraavan aamun vancouver Sun-lehdessä oli etusivulla suuri kuva Sadun kalasta. Hän oli saanut ”Excellence of craft” palkinnon! Työt on valmistettu 100 %:sesti ympäristö ystävällisistä ma-teriaaleista, kokovillatäytteestä, huovasta ja non-toxic aineista. Materiaali on kallista eikä tuote ole tehdas-tavaraa, silla jokainen ommel- ja neulanpisto on tehty

itse. rakkaudella, hän sanoo. leluiksi ne ovat kalliita, mutta monet arvostavat laatua.

Mikä sinut sai valitsemaan juuri kalojen valmista-misen? ”no, niitähän ei aikaisemmin ole nähty mark-kinoilla. lapsenahan vietin paljon aikaa vanhempieni kanssa merellä. kävimme purjehtimassa georgian salmella ja keräsimme aina merikurkkuja meritähtiä,” sekä simpukoita ja ostereita. Suomalaisella vaarillani oli mökki vuonon varrella Mökissä oli sauna ja sau-

nakamarin seinällä porontalja ja tuo-hikontti, pöydällä iittalan lasia. vaari vei minut usein ongelle kanssaan. Saimme red snappereita ja rockcodeja, joskus lohiakin. Teki pahaa, kun vaari hakkasi niitä kapulalla päähän. Säälin niitä kovasti, koska mielestäni niillä oli sielukas katse. Joskus ruokimme pikkukaloilla valkopääkotkia, jotka tarkkailivat meitä puiden latvoista ja syöksyivät mereen heti kun heitimme niille kalan. Ehkä nuo aamut kalassa yhdessä suomalaisen isoisän kanssa vuonon perällä ovat osasyy inspirati-oon ja ehkä ojibva – heimon puolelta olen saanut kiinnostukseni käsitöihin.

FinniSH HEriTagE SoCiETyn perinteinen kalevalan päivän vietto oli Finnish Manorilla. viileä, räntäinen sunnuntaipäivä selkeni ja varmaan yleisökato johtui osittain myös tästä syystä. Juhani Saarinen toivotti vieraat

tervetulleeksi. Puheessaan hän mainitsi seuran alkuvaiheista sekä upeasta perinnetavarakokoelmasta, josta seuran arkistot ja tavarat on kuvattu ja luetteloitu. Tällä hetkellä suurin ongelma on vakava jäsenkato, ja jos emme saa nuorempia jäseniä, niin todennäköisesti seuran toiminta joudutaan lopettamaan. Hän toivoi, että vanhemmat seu-ran jäsenet kertoisivat sukulaisilleen, ystävilleen ja tuttavilleen, josko sitä kautta löytyisi kiinnostuneita tuomaan uusia ehdotuksia ja toimintamuotoja. Nordic Spirit 2014: The Home Front

THE SCandinavian CulTural SoCiETy presents Nordic Spirit 2014: The Home Front april 12 and 13 at the Scandinavian Centre. our local Scandinavi-

an-Canadian community contributed their recollections and family stories of civili-an life during and around World War ii. The stories are summarized and displayed in print together with images. They bring to life the resilience and resourcefulness of people living under the stress of wartime conditions. This display is free.

Enjoy a two hour dramatic reading of these tales -- inspiring, hair-raising, or hu-morous – with musical interludes by the nordic folk band “Sammenspil”, Saturday april 12 from 4 to 6 pm. Entrance is by donation. Coffee is included.

This 2014 nordic Spirit show continues the Cultural Society’s program of heritage collection and preservation. The past seven nordic Spirit shows displayed primarily unpublished photos from our members’ private collections together with some text documenting their immigrant experience. our new show begins a change in direc-tion. We will continue to collect and preserve our shared history, but now we will examine its various aspects primarily by audio recordings with text presentations and publications. – Carolyn Thauberger

Born in ÅBo (Turku), Finland on July 29, 1923; died at lions gate Hospital on January 30, 2014

after surgery due to a fall. Married to ulf “uffe” Henrik Mathias Fagerlund on July 29, 1950 in Åbo, Finland (deceased, September 17, 2013). Mom to 5 children, Mormor/Farmor to 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, she is survived by:– katherine (Paul Warwick) and their daughter

rachel; anne davis (Paul) and their children Erika Mackay (kevin),

– karl and ava (fiancé Craig o'Connell); Marie lucas (dave) and their children Jamie (Stuart Jergens) plus their son

– Sean, and Caraline; John (yvonne), his children allecia and Brooke, and their daughter Melody; and Paul (Stella)

– and their children aaron, Stephen and Tor.

Mom was also an accomplished artist, a past member of the West Vancouver Sketch Club, and instilled in her family a love of art, crafts and music. With failing eyesight, she turned her creative energy and intelligence to translating Swedish and Finnish prose for the Runeberg Society. Though medical complications in Mom’s later years left her with physical challenges, her will to continue experiencing life to its fullest remained strong and she was a vital force in our midst to the end. Always positive and welcoming, she will be remembered longingly by family and friends both here and abroad. The family laid her ashes beside Dad’s in North Vancouver Cemetery on February 16th 2014. We invite those who wish to remember Mom to join us at Capilano United Church Hall at 2260 Philip Ave, North Vancouver, on March 30th 2014 from 2pm to 5pm. A collection of her art will be displayed. Mika Kaurismäki’s best films have dealt with music or road trips. Road North combines both elements with plenty of heart becoming a family story when Leo (Vesa-Matti Loiri), an absentee

father, returns to Helsinki to reconnect with his son Timo (Samuli Edelmann) he abandoned 30 years earlier, when the son was a toddler. The father convinces Timo to go for a day trip which turns into a journey through the landscapes of the country. There is something Leo wants to show his son, but he won’t say what. More family is also discovered during the road trip. The overall tone is lighter than usual for Kaurismäki but still has substance. Road North was a great success at the Toronto Film Festival in 2012.
