1 INTRODUCTION

This investigation was carried out on the instructions of Royal HaskoningDHV on behalf of

Lafarge Tarmac.

This report details the work carried out both on site and in the geotechnical and chemical testing

laboratories; it contains a description of the site and the works undertaken, the exploratory hole

logs and laboratory testing results.

The ground investigation has been carried out using techniques, in general accordance with the

recommendations of BS5930: 1999 Code of Practice for Site Investigations. Whilst every

attempt is made to record full details of the strata encountered in the exploratory holes,

techniques of hole formation and sampling will inevitably lead to disturbance, mixing or loss of

material in some soils and rocks.

The investigation has also been carried out in accordance with BS10175 Investigation of

Potentially Contaminated Sites: Code of Practice (2011).

A comprehensive desk study, other than an inspection of geological maps, has not been

requested or undertaken as part of this investigation. Nor has a preliminary risk assessment been

completed.

All information given in this report is based on the ground conditions encountered during the site

work, and on the results of laboratory and field tests performed during the investigation.

However, there may be conditions at the site that have not been taken into account, such as

unpredictable soil strata, contaminant concentrations, and water conditions between or below

exploratory holes. It should be noted that groundwater levels usually vary due to seasonal and/or

other effects and may at times differ to those measured during the investigation.

This report was prepared by Structural Soils Limited for the sole and exclusive use of Lafarge

Tarmac in response to particular instructions. Any other parties using the information contained

in this report do so at their own risk and any duty of care to those parties is excluded. No

liability will be accepted after a period of 6 years from the date of the report.

2 SITE DESCRIPTION

2.1 Location and Topography

The site is located to the south of Holwell Hyde Lane, approximately 4km south-east from the

centre of Welwyn Garden City (see Site Location Plan in Appendix A). The British National

Grid Reference of the site is TL 264 106.

The site is a roughly L-shaped plot covering an area of approximately 66ha. Adjoining the plot

to the northwest is a 94ha area of land which has been subjected to mineral extractions then

backfilled with various types of waste before being capped and landscaped. The ground

investigation is on land that has not been subject to mineral extraction or landfill.

The site consists of four large fields which are currently used for agricultural purposes by tenant

farmers all of which can be accessed from two tracks which run north-south across the site. The

fields on the west of the site are surrounded by mature trees up to 10m in height and ditch drains

running southwards. There are two isolated areas of woodland in the southern area of the site.

The site generally slopes 1m for every 40m towards the south-south-west.

Further access to the site can be gained to the north from Holwell Hyde Lane and from a locked

gate off the A414 to the south. A small lake is present to the north of the site.

2.2 Geology

Information on the geology of the site was obtained from the following sources published by the

British Geological Survey (BGS):

BGS map (sheet 239, scale 1:50,000, published 1924).

The BGS digital geology map, which utilises the most up to date names for geological

units (www.bgs.ac.uk/data).

The BGS Lexicon of Named Rock Units, which provides typical descriptions for most

geological units (www.bgs.ac.uk/lexicon).

Information on geology obtained as part of the desk study, which is drawn from the BGS

digital map.

The site is shown to be underlain by the following descending sequence of strata:

TABLE 1: SUMMARY OF EXPECTED SITE GEOLOGY

Geological Unit Name Description

Lowestoft Formation Formally known as Lowestoft Boulder Clay and Lowestoft Till Formation shown to be Quaternary in age. It is described as chalky till, together with outwash sands and gravels, silts and clays.

Kesgrave Catchment Subgroup Shown to be Quaternary in age and described as fluvial moderately sorted sands and gravels.

White Chalk Subgroup Formally known as the Upper Chalk Group and consisting of the Lewes Nodular Chalk Formation and the Seaford Chalk Formation (undifferentiated). Shown to be Cretaceous in age. It is described as chalk with flints. With discrete marl seams, nodular chalk, sponge-rich and flint seams throughout.

Note: Information obtained from BGS digital records © NERC. The British Geological Survey website shows the south-west site to be underlain by the

Kesgrave Catchment Subgroup. The rest of the site is shows to be underlain by the Lowestoft

Formation.

The Kesgrave Catchment Subgroup and Lowestoft Formation are underlain by the White Chalk

Subgroup.

2.3 Hydrogeology & Hydrology

The Environment Agency (EA) website has classified part of the site’s Drift Deposits (Kesgrave

Catchment Subgroup) as a Secondary ‘A’ Aquifer (variably permeable) and the site’s solid

geology (White Chalk Subgroup) as a Principal Aquifer (highly permeable).

‘Principal’ Aquifers are layers of rock or drift deposits that have high inter-granular and/or

fracture permeability - meaning they usually provide a high level of water storage. They may

support water supply and/or river base flow on a strategic scale. In most cases, principal aquifers

are aquifers previously designated as major aquifers.

‘Secondary’ aquifers include a wide range of rock layers or drift deposits with an equally wide

range of water permeability and storage. Secondary ‘A’ Aquifers are permeable layers capable of

supporting water supplies at a local rather than strategic scale, and in some cases forming an

important source of base flow to rivers. These are generally aquifers formerly classified as minor

aquifers.

Page 7: LAFARGE TARMAC - Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council

Report on Ground Investigation – Cole Green Lafarge Tarmac

561259r Page 7 Structural Soils Limited

The EA defines zones around groundwater abstractions used for public water supply as being

Source Protection Zones (SPZ). The Zones are defined by the estimated travel time of potential

contaminants to the abstractions. This travel time can be influenced by factors such as the

underlying geology or the volume of groundwater being abstracted. Source Protection Zones are

therefore areas that may be particularly sensitive to groundwater impact.

The site is located within a SPZ I (inner), SPZ II (outer) and SPZ III (total catchment). The

public water supply abstraction associated with the Source Protection Zone is located at the

100m south of the southern boundary of the site. Therefore the groundwater beneath the site is

likely to be flowing in a southern direction. From BGS borehole logs in the area the estimated

groundwater level is approximately 9.00m below ground level.

3 FIELDWORK

3.1 Scope of Works

The following works were completed between 5 and 9 December 2013, 6 and 10 January 2014

and 6 and 14 May 2014 at locations shown on the Exploratory Hole Location Plan in Appendix

A:

TABLE 2: SCOPE OF INTRUSIVE WORKS AND IN-SITU TESTING

Number Exploratory Hole or In-Situ Test Type Hole / Test Numbers

23 Cable Percussion Boreholes. BH1 to BH7, BH9 to BH24

10 Machine Dug Trial Pits. TP1 to TP10

2 Falling Head Permeability Tests. BH3, BH21

The machine dug trial pits were completed between the 5 and 9 December 2013, cable

percussion borehole locations BH3, BH4, BH16, BH18-BH22 were complete between 6 and 10

January 2014 however very poor ground conditions caused by bad weather caused the remaining

site work to be postponed. Works were completed between 6 and 14 May 2014 completing

cable percussion borehole locations BH1, BH2, BH5-BH7, BH9- BH15, BH17, BH24.

The positions were selected by Lafarge Tarmac and set out by Structural Soils Limited in

conjunction with Royal Haskoning DHV and adjusted where necessary to take account of buried

or overhead services, or other restrictions.

The exploratory holes were logged by an engineer in general accordance with the

recommendations of BS5930: 1999 (2010 Amendment 2, which incorporates the requirements of

BS EN ISO 14688-1, 14688-2 and 14689-1) and CIRIA Report C574 Engineering in Chalk.

Detailed descriptions, together with relevant comments, are given in the logs included in

Appendix B.

Prior to the commencement of any exploratory hole or intrusive test a cable avoidance scan was

carried out using a cable avoidance tool (CAT).

Inspection pits were hand dug at cable percussion borehole locations where noted on the relevant

exploratory hole logs or in-situ test results.

On completion of the works, a survey of the exploratory hole locations was undertaken using

specialist Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment. The coordinates of each exploratory

Page 9: LAFARGE TARMAC - Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council

hole were measured relative to British National Grid, and the level relative to Ordnance Datum.

These are shown on the exploratory hole logs contained in Appendix B which have been printed

with a reduced level column.

3.2 Cable Percussion Boreholes

The boreholes were drilled using a cable tool percussion drilling rig and were 150mm diameter.

The depths of the boreholes were 3.00m to 10.5m and they encountered variable geology

generally consisting of topsoil and made ground over sandy clay and diamiction over sand and

gravels over chalk.

100mm diameter undisturbed samples were recovered from the cohesive strata in the boreholes

using a thin walled UT100 sampler compliant with the specification for thin walled samplers

contained in BS EN ISO 22475-1.

Bulk soil samples were taken from the boreholes at regular intervals and every change in strata.

3.3 Trial Pits

The trial pits were excavated using a mechanical excavator and were approximately 1.50m x

6.00m in plan area and up to 5.00m deep. The trial pits encountered ploughed topsoil over sandy

clay or gravelly sand over diamiction (Lowestoft Formation) or sand and gravels (Kesgrave

Catchment Subgroup).

Bulk soil samples were taken from the trial pits at regular intervals.

3.4 Backfill, Monitoring Wells and Installations

On completion 50mm diameter gas/groundwater monitoring wells were installed in all

exploratory boreholes, the design having been decided by Royal HaskoningDHV with exception

of BH21. The installation details are shown on the exploratory hole logs in Appendix B.

The well details are also summarised below:

On completion around the instalation all exploratory holes were backfilled with arisings, gravel

and bentonite pellets. The trial pits were backfilled with arisings, compacted in layers by the

excavator bucket.

The client or site owner should ensure that the monitoring wells (and their protective covers) are

not damaged or covered until such time as information is no longer required from them. Extra

costs would be incurred if it were necessary to reinstate damaged wells.

3.5 In-Situ Testing

2 no. falling head permeability tests were undertaken in selected monitoring wells in accordance

with BS5930: part 4 (1999). The test results are present in tabular and graphical format in

Appendix C.

3.6 Monitoring and Post Fieldwork Environmental Sampling

The wells were purged of three well volumes of groundwater (unless indicated otherwise on the

monitoring results) on the 28 May 2014.

561259r Page 12 Structural Soils Limited

4.2 Topsoil, Made Ground and Fill

The topsoil was up to 0.60m thick where present and consisted of soft to firm friable orangish

brown sandy slightly gravelly CLAY.

The made ground comprised slightly silty gravelly SAND with cobbles. In BH20 and BH22 the

made ground comprised of soft to firm slightly gravelly slightly sandy CLAY/SILT with low

cobble content. Anthropogenic (man-made) components of all the made ground included fine to

coarse subangular to angular brick and concrete.

The fill comprised slightly clayey very sandy GRAVEL. It was only encountered in BH4 at

0.45m depth and was 0.25m thick.

4.3 Lowestoft Till Formation

The Lowestoft Till Formation comprised of firm to hard sandy slightly gravelly CLAY with

occasional thick to very thick beds of medium to coarse SAND/GRAVEL. The Lowestoft Till

Formation was encountered widely throughout the site however notable exception in the

exploratory holes along the southern boundary of the site – BH6, BH7, TP3, and TP6.

4.4 Kesgrave Catchment Subgroup

The Kesgrave Catchment Subgroup comprised of clayey slightly gravelly medium SAND to

clayey sandy medium to coarse GRAVEL.

4.5 Chalk

In BH6 and BH7 the Kesgrave Catchment Subgroup was underlain by Chalk generally

composed of sandy slightly gravelly silt. The CIRIA Report C574 Engineering in Chalk

classifies this chalk as Grade DM.

4.6 Groundwater

Groundwater was encountered during the investigation in BH1, BH3, BH4, BH9-14, BH16-

BH24, TP1, TP2 TP5, TP9 at depths ranging from depths of 0.30m to 7.5m below ground level.

On encountering groundwater in the cable percussion boreholes, boring operations were

suspended for a period of 20 minutes and any rise in groundwater level recorded, as detailed on

the borehole logs.

Page 13: LAFARGE TARMAC - Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council

Report on Ground Investigation – Cole Green Lafarge Tarmac

561259r Page 13 Structural Soils Limited

The boreholes had water added to them to aid drilling due to ground conditions, therefore

groundwater strikes may not have been observable, and/or any standing water levels recorded

may have been influenced by the addition of water.

Groundwater levels in the monitoring wells installed on site were measured (see Section 3).

Standing ground water levels of 0.30m to 5.04m were recorded. The monitoring results are

contained in Appendix C.

5 SUMMARY

5.1 Works were undertaken to access the possible ground gas contamination due to the

site’s close proximity to disused waste site.

5.2 The site is present at Cole Green, Welwyn Garden City and contains a collection of

large plough fields separated by access tracks, small patches of woodland and open

drainage ditches.

5.3 The investigation has revealed the general geology to be firm to stiff orangish brown

sandy clay with unconformable beds of gravel/sand over stiff dark grey clay with gravel

over structureless cream chalk. The chalk was encountered in the southern most

boreholes of the site.

5.4 The sites lies on a Secondary ‘A’ Aquifer as well as a Principal Aquifer due to the site’s

Drift and Solid geology. The site lies within a SPZ I (inner), SPZ II (outer) and SPZ III

(total catchment) zone.

5.5 An intrusive investigation comprising twenty three cable percussion boreholes and ten

machine-dug trial pits were carried out along with geotechnical and chemical analysis

of soil samples in the laboratory.

5.6 50mm diameter gas/groundwater monitoring wells were installed in all exploratory

boreholes.

5.7 Groundwater level varied significantly over the site with the exploratory holes in the

northern area of the site encountering groundwater at approximately 66m to 71m

relative level, and no groundwater encountered in the majority of exploratory holes in

the southern area of the site.
