LAITH N. AL-EITAN SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Al-Eitan is an Associate Professor of Pharmacogenetics and Human Genetics in the Department of

Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) with a Ph.D. in

Pharmacogenetics and Human Genetics from the University of Western Australia. At JUST, I have also served as

the Director of the Princess Haya Biotechnology Center, where I was the project manager for a number of biorisk

and molecular biology workshops, in collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories and the Canadian Department

of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Development, that were offered to Egyptian, Iraqi, Jordanian, Libyan, and Yemeni

professionals.

In terms of the ability to build internal and external partnerships, I have recognized the invaluable role those multi-

disciplinary partnerships on both the national and international levels can play in scientific research. As a

Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) Biosciences Fellow, I am currently on sabbatical leave in the United

Kingdom, where I am part of an international team that is investigating lyssaviruses and other bat-borne viruses as

they manifest in our region. Moreover, most of my research was carried out in collaboration with internal and

external partners at JUST, King Abdullah University Hospital, King Hussein Medical Center, Hashemite

University, University of Jordan, and King Khalid University (Abha, Saudi Arabia). As a principal investigator, my

research has attracted more than JOD 300,000 (~ USD 423,000) worth of grants from JUST and the Scientific

Research Support Fund of the Jordanian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

My participation in research events is diverse and consistent, and I have received training in a number of technical

and theoretical areas from JUST’s Academic Development Center, the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural

Organization, the Jordanian Royal Scientific Society, Los Alamos National Laboratory (New Mexico, USA), and

Sandia National Laboratories (New Mexico, USA).

I am a staunch supporter of young and upcoming scientists, I have supervised and co-supervised 37 master’s

students in the field of pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics. As a credit to the strength of the research, the

vast majority of my graduate students have published papers from their theses in reputable journals. My research

work aids in improving the understanding of the genetic basis and pharmacogenetic approach of several diseases

among the Jordanian population. Research has been focused on exploring the genetic susceptibility and differences

of certain conditions including breast cancer, lymphoblastic leukemia, epilepsy, autism, schizophrenia, multiple

sclerosis, alopecia areata, diabetes type 2 and asthma in Jordanian population in addition to the responsiveness

status of their prescribed pharmacological drugs based of the genetic variability. I made several contributions with

national and international scientists and facilities to conducts research work and workshops. I considered as one of

the first researchers concentrated on the arena of pharmacogenetics research at Jordan University of Science and

Technology, in addition, to be the founder of Advanced Pharmacogenetics and Drug The safety course is given to

M.Sc. students at JUST University. Regarding publications, I have published 50+ papers in the field of

pharmacogenomics in the past 5 years alone. Finally, my research also focuses on elucidating the pharmacogenomic

and pharmacogenetic characteristics of the ethnic communities within Jordan, with the aim of facilitating the

country’s journey towards a system of personalized healthcare.

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

As I got further into my scientific career, I continue to belief that teaching combines knowledge,

skill, fun, exciting, passion and compassion. I always dedicated and committed to improve myself

as well as my students. In order to be an effective instructor, I must use different strategies to

provide a safe and caring environment to assist the students to express themselves and speak their

minds in order to embrace the differences of each other. I believe that all students are unique, and

they shouldn’t be learnt in the same manner. Therefore, to assess their learning abilities, different

type of assessment was performed. Teaching of graduate and undergraduate students give me the

chance to ensure that they understand basic concepts for their campus life and even more for their

own real life after the college to become stronger, confidant and effective individuals in their

families and community.
