Welcome to the Lake Cumberland Visitor Guide! Wow! are you going to enjoy this inaugural issue! The burckhard family has had a blast exploring the Lake Cumberland (LC) area and all of the fine marinas offering family fun and great fishing with LOTS OF WaTer. Lake cumberland is known for houseboating and all the great accommodations that are available around the area. In our marinas pages, we have been able to highlight each of the outstanding marinas on Lc (see pages C2, C3, 3-9, BC). You will find additional accommodations listings on page 16 for more great places to stay. Throughout the guide, we have highlighted some awesome destinations to visit when you have the desire to go exploring or to experience

some of “annie’s” travels and treasures.

Let’s talk a little about wonderful Lc. first of all, contrary to much of the media hype, there is plenty of water. Yes, the water levels have been lowered to accommodate the Wolf creek dam repairs; however, it is a huge lake with over 1,200 miles of shoreline, 50,000 acres of water, and in most places, it is very deep with over 100 feet of depth not being uncommon at normal pool levels, and still over 60-90 feet deep even at the reduced lake levels! No problem for your cruisers, houseboats, or pontoon boats on Lc! The marinas have all made provisions to make your summer vacation or weekend getaway enjoyable and pleasant. most marinas offer a shuttle service from the parking lots with a water taxi service from the dock to your houseboat. how sweet is this? Southern Hospitality at its finest plus service with a smile! Thinking about coming down with your family for a family reunion or any other special occasion? have we found the place for you! fort Wahoo cabin and boat rentals at Lc is a wonderful, spacious place with new log cabins, a picnic shelter, and a playground area. They’re just a stone’s throw away from cave springs marina. This is a great place to have several families rent the cabins or for a group of guys to come out during hunting or fishing season to kick back, relax, and do what guys do.

Looking to shop, explore, and enjoy some laid back living? Take a drive to the south fork mennonite community located just off of hwy. 127. enjoy the casey county Produce auction every Monday, Wednesday, or Friday to buy some of the region’s finest fresh produce. Take a stroll through sunny valley country store & bakery and see the wide variety of bulk foods, amazing selection of oils, herbs, and about a dozen naturally flavored honeys. “Annie”/ I was in hog heaven browsing through this store. south fork furniture offers handcrafted amish furniture built to last. They have everything from bedroom ensembles in hickory, oak, and pine to beautiful armoires, buffets, dining room collections, and one of my favorites - the beautiful wooden lazy susans - a perfect gift for a bride-to-be, birthday present, or for houseboat or cabin living. There are plenty of events to keep you coming back for more throughout the year.

Lake cumberland loves water events and the quest to beat the World record raft-Up on Lc will take place on august 14th, where over 2,000 boats are expected to take part. Go to their official website, www.lakecumberlandraftup.com to sign up and participate in this monumental and fun event! The Lc Poker run is also a blast whether you want to participate or just be a spectator. It’s a site to see these grand boats blast off and race around the lake to get their winning hand.

somersplash in somerset offers the biggest water adventure park in the area and is a favorite for families and kids (no matter the age). make sure to take a day and visit this exciting destination. While you are in downtown somerset, come see what their ardent volunteers have done to transform a historic turn of the century post office into a wonderful arts center - the Carnegie community arts center (ccac). The ccac offers monthly exhibits, art classes, and an artists’ guild with their juried art being displayed in the gift store, along with a wonderful french market gift store and bistro downstairs in this magnificent building.

There is much to do at Lc. The beautiful and deep waters of Lc are a perfect backdrop to a memorable vacation, family gathering, business retreat, or a special weekend getaway. Gas is around $2.60/gallon at press time, so, no excuses not to come out and explore this beautiful region. If you love history, explore Mills Spring Battlefield and see why this historical setting is one of the most visited areas depicting the trials and tribulations of the civil War years. When you visit the folks in this guide, let them know that you found them here. enjoy your visit to the Lake cumberland area!

Cave Springs MarinaCave Springs Marina is a special marina tucked away on one of the prettiest areas of Lake cumberland. owners ed and estelee slusser and son dale have endured many challenges since buying the marina a few years ago. only months after buying the marina, they were told that the corps of engineers were lowering the lake levels and they had one week to move. With determination and grit, they pulled together (slip customers included) and moved the former alligator I down the lake about five miles. Today, cave springs marina is nestled in deep waters of 90 feet - great for large boats and folks coming to have a meal at the popular Sadie’s Sunset Café. There are plenty of mooring spots to come in and have an ice cream, get a cold drink, refill your gas tank at the fuel pumps or pick up a bag of ice. sunset café has great food and is known around the lake for their deep crust brick oven pizzas loaded with fresh ingredients. It is a favorite among slip customers and boaters coming in off the lake for lunch or dinner. They have inside and outside dining. The outside deck area is equipped with large, green umbrellas to shade you from the sun. sunset café has wonderful salads (with homemade salad dressings) and the best wings on the lake. They also serve some great appetizers like grouper fingers and homemade potato chips - oh, are these

delicious! This is a very kid friendly marina and restaurant. ed and estelee’s grandchildren spend most of their summers at the dock and entertained the burckhard brothers, Grant and blake, while we were there. Grandsons carson and Kade took them out on their first paddle boat ride. They had a blast. Now our sons have been asking us for a paddle boat. cave springs marina is a full-service

marina with plenty of boat slips available to accommodate lots of boaters. They welcome any new customers. ed, estelee, and dale provide outstanding service, know you by your first name, and have very competitive rates. several of the current slip customers that we spoke to along the way said that they were very loyal to ed and estelee, and loved the marina because of the service, the location, and the ambience. They also offer quick and courteous shuttle

service from the parking lot to the boat dock in a comfortable, air conditioned van with a very happy and professional driver. come and experience the grace of cave springs marina, have a meal, and make plans to spend your family vacation or weekend getaway with the slusser’s. cave springs marina can be visited online at www.cavespringsmarina.com or by phoning 270-866-3634.

Jamestown Resort & Marina (Jrm) is a beautiful marina sequestered within the very heart of picturesque Lake cumberland between Jamestown and russell springs, KY. Jrm’s new helmsman, bill chamberlain, loves his new marina and enjoys meeting the boat slip customers and the families that are vacationing - looking to have a great time on the waters of Lake cumberland. Jrm offers over 800 boat slips, and houseboat

and pontoon rentals including the Grande dame - the first Lady houseboats that sleep 12 and the deluxe houseboats that sleep 8. What a great way to spend a relaxing time on the lake with family and friends. Lake cumberland, a recreational paradise, is why boat name brand “danzi” has been coming to Jrm for many years now to host their midwest Gathering with people coming from all over the midwest, and some from New York. This event and get together is a great prelude to the memorial day Weekend, when thousands of families and visitors descend upon Lake cumberland for the beginning of summer fun, relaxation and enjoyment. Jrm offers convenient shuttle service from the parking lot and a water taxi that will help you load your belongings onto your boat or houseboat. They have some fantastic choices of accommodations including their Lodge which offers different types of rooms, from a super suite to those suited to individuals with a handicap. They also offer chalet condominiums, fishing cabins, and authentic log cabins. Jrm takes pride in offering clean, comfortable accommodations and have a variety to choose from. They are a full service marina with pump outs, a convenient fuel service pier, and a very nice ship’s store. They have a wonderful restaurant called the Mariner’s Café with an excellent menu including several fish dishes, grilled steaks, vegetarian dishes, burgers, reuben’s, salads, and so much more. What caught my eye was their vegetarian dishes like their veggie wrap and veggie burger. This is a great place for vegetarians or those seeking something light. They also serve a full breakfast seven days a week, with such favorites as biscuits and gravy, delicious omelets, and my kids’ favorites - pancakes and french toast. come on down to Jrm and have a meal, take a walk around, and enjoy the beautiful lake views. State Dock has upgraded their boat slips over the last few years and offer very spacious slip areas. some are built with entertainment patios that offer outside room at the slip area for gathering with friends. some even have custom built kitchen areas for cooking meals and lounging at boat side. This is a unique platform to enjoy the wonders of boat living and is a great way to meet your neighbors. for many of the boat slip customers and houseboat owners, boat living is a way of life and many stay at state dock all summer or on the weekends. This is their marina home, filled with all the amenities, entertainment (if wanted), and a friendly, hospitable atmosphere. mr. bill Jasper, President of state dock is very proud of the neighborly environment and is welcomed by the boat slip owners as he takes his daily strolls or rides down the dock on his bicycle. boat life at state dock is wonderful with the welcoming waves and friendly conversations. There are many services at state dock; including valet car service and water taxi to take you and your belongings to your boat, an unbelievable ship store with the largest selection of sperry shoes and summer boat clothing that I have seen at any marina, a fitness center, brand new slip customer restrooms and shower facilities, entertainment patio for live bands, karaoke, flat screen TV’s showing the daily sports events, and Chub’s Dockside Grill. There is entertainment nearly every weekend and chub’s offers lunch and dinner with some of my favorites not found anywhere in the region – “original Kronos Gyro” sandwiches! Yum! These are delicious and I had to top mine off with dessert by trying their amazing funnel cake fries. chub’s menu offers a very nice selection of appetizers, including everybody’s favorites - chicken tenders, cheesy fries, sweet potato fries, and JUmbo chicken wings. They also offer a nice selection of salads, sandwiches, and cheeseburgers. The state Dock offers more than just houseboat rentals and has a full fleet of pontoon boats, ski boats, and even kayaks. come experience and maximize your fun at state dock and have a one-of-a-kind vacation. visit the state dock website for more information, www.statedock.com or call toll-free, 1-888-sTaTe-docK.

U.S. Congressman Hal RogersU.S. Congressman Hal Rogers is the visionary and granddaddy of the Lake cumberland region and other destinations in his 38 county, 5th congressional district. since 1981, hal rogers has been implementing tourism and educational strategies that are helping his constituents in southern and eastern Kentucky. a firm believer in tourism and the natural assets that southern and eastern Kentucky share, he has set up a number of initiatives (TOUR SEKY for example) that have joined counties across his district to share what so many vacationers visiting Lake cumberland and the surrounding

region have reveled in for generations. born in rural Kentucky, his tireless effort has created thousands of jobs, brought additional publicity to the region, and created new complimentary tourist destinations, such as SomerSplash in somerset, and the Hal Rogers Family Entertainment Water Park in Williamsburg, Kentucky that are a big hit among families and children of all ages. he is a strong believer that the millions of tourists that come to Lake cumberland and other destinations within his district cannot find a county line in the road and just want to enjoy the beauty, the sites, and attractions around the destination that they have come to visit. he has encouraged the many counties within his

district to work together, pool resources, and to share their many assets. With this great cooperation, he has brought millions of dollars of funding through grants and appropriations to promote these attractions, to create economic development, and jobs for these rural counties. congressman rogers’ favorite saying is “a vision without funding is a hallucination!” his incredible foresight and vision have brought scenic corridors into this majestic region, along with scenic byways, improved trails and maps, the Red Bud Festival in the spring with over a half a million red buds planted in the last year throughout cities and along scenic highways, plus the grand event of 2010 - the World Equestrian Games. This is the first time that the bluegrass state has held these prestigious international games. hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world will come and partake in these world class games and enjoy the many facets of the state of Kentucky. born and raised in Wayne county, this honorable statesman wanted to make a difference in his home county, beautiful Lake cumberland, and the region by promoting this awesome destination’s assets – beautiful national forests, state parks, hiking, camping, sightseeing, antiquing, water recreation, fishing, and hunting, as well as foster education and technology to support this ever-growing industry in the state of Kentucky. congressman rogers believes in showing our guests - the potential retiree, or family looking to relocate, the many assets, southern hospitality, and the graciousness of the Lake cumberland region in hopes that they will tell a family member or friend about their pleasant stay in his home state. Y’all enjoy your visit and come back soon! http://halrogers.house.gov • 202-225-4601

Fort Wahoo Cabin & Boat RentalsFort Wahoo Cabin and Boat Rentals at Lake cumberland is an awesome new resort area that offers rustic log cabin rentals in beautiful Nancy, KY - just down the road from cave springs marina. owners daniel and cecelia bates fell in love with this piece of property many years ago while vacationing at Lake cumberland. They used to ride their aTv’s and sit under the pear tree, envisioning what they might do with this wonderful piece of land. as business owners in eastern Kentucky serving the coal industry, they pondered, planned, and eventually bought these lovely 21 acres and developed fort Wahoo. This is truly a family business with daughter erica Phillips managing cabin reservations and maintenance at the resort. her husband billy and daughter Zoe play an active role in helping with the business. Zoe loves to welcome guests when they come to “her” fort Wahoo. fort Wahoo got its name from when daniel was a little boy and used to play ball. after swinging the bat and striking out or hitting the ball, the fans and family would shout “Wahoo” – giving him this nickname. This is a family paradise with three modern log cabins. each cabin has 3 bedrooms – 1 queen bed, 1 full bed, and a loft with 2 twin beds – and still plenty of room for a few more children in sleeping bags. They also offer a fully stocked kitchen, satellite Tv, and soon, wireless internet throughout the resort. There are grills and fire pits outside the cabin perfect for roasting marshmallows and making smores. Yummm… we enjoyed several one evening while visiting with our welcoming hosts. fort Wahoo is just minutes (less than a mile) from cave spring marina (formerly known as alligator I), and is a nice walk down to the marina. There are plenty of activities for the family, including a

wonderful wooden Noah’s ark playground that kept my nine year old sons and Zoe happy all morning, swinging, playing tag, and ascending the climbing wall. volleyball, corn hole, and (soon) basketball are available for the fort Wahoo guests. There are many trails from the resort for aTv riding, hiking, and trail riding. This is

a perfect place for a family reunion, girls’ getaway, family vacation, or for the guys’ hunting and fishing trip. Fort

Wahoo also offers hunting and fishing packages, including an expert hunting or fishing guide, like Dan Chappel - one of the popular fishing guides at Lake cumberland. This is a very affordable way to spend a weekend of fun and relaxation. split the cost between four friends and this is an inexpensive spring, fall, and even winter getaway. fishing is great on Lake cumberland

in the winter months and wildlife is abundant at fort Wahoo with plenty of rabbits, squirrels,

turkey, and deer. fall is my favorite time of the year with blankets of color hugging the contours of the rolling

hills surrounding Lake cumberland. There is nothing better than sitting on the front porch of your cabin at fort Wahoo, sipping a cup of your favorite hot beverage, and watching the birds and wildlife across the fields. They also offer boat rentals with a new fleet of pontoon boats with hard top decks and water slides. These can be reserved by the day or week, or put into a package deal by calling scheduling coordinator, erica. fort Wahoo is a remarkable, family friendly, safe, and truly enjoyable resort area with clean, modern, and new log cabins. visit fort Wahoo online or give erica a call to arrange your vacation now. They can be visited at www.fortWahoo-Lakecumberland.com. (Tel: 859-314-3786)

Wolf Creek National Fish HatcheryThe Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery is a must visit while you are in the Lake cumberland area or planning a visit to the region. This premier facility is one of seventy hatcheries in the U.s. and one of the newest with a new multimillion dollar visitor center constructed in 2008. This class a hatchery offers fantastic interpretive exhibits that promote a better understanding and appreciation of the natural history, resources, and the aquatic habitat in Kentucky. Their emphasis is on promoting the environment and recreational fishing to the public, plus highlighting the different species of fish, wildlife, and habitat found in our waterways. This is the largest fish hatchery in the state of Kentucky and the third largest in the country. When the Wolf river Dam was constructed for flood control and energy production, and Lake cumberland was created, the federal government realized that they disrupted, and in some cases eliminated the native species of the river and totally changed the fish habitat. In order to mitigate this, the fish hatchery was built to provide healthy trout species - including rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout and others - to supply the cumberland river and other waters across Kentucky. The Wolf creek National fish hatchery raises over a million fish every year and releases them at various stages of development. They receive over 2 million eggs, which take about sixteen to eighteen months to reach optimum size for release. The 64 raceways that they have separate the fish into different stages of their growth. visitors may visit the raceways to observe the development. If you come at the right time, you might be able to assist them with feeding. They release the fish when they are around 9-10” long and transport them all across Kentucky in special custom made trucks. The cumberland river, just below the

dam, is known to be a premier trout stream - one of the best east of the mississippi. many folks come from all over to catch these healthy fish. One of the biggest events at the Wolf Creek National hatchery is their annual CATCH A RAINBOW Kids Fishing Derby day. This is a free event with lots of activities centered on catching rainbow trout. one of the largest events of its kind in the country, this event is a real hit! over 1,650 children participated in the event last year, with activities, fishing assistance, and prizes for all. everything is free due to the generosity of their many sponsors and The friends of Wolf creek National fish hatchery, Inc. The non-profit Friends group is an integral part of the programs at the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery. Its mission is to promote fishing and environmental education through various activities and programs. They also operate a very successful gift shop with t-shirts, books, souvenirs, and fishing licenses, fishing tackle, along with the widest assortment of environmental educational materials in the region. This is a great facility to bring a school or church group, women’s club outing, the family, or to hold an educational seminar. With over 100,000 visitors per year, this exceptional fish hatchery offers a great environment for learning, helps us to appreciate the habitat around us, plus take responsibility of protecting our future and the environment that we live in. admission to the Wolf creek National fish hatchery is free and they are open year round – only closed on christmas day. The hours of operation are January to april from 8:00 am-4:00 Pm, may to october from 8:00 am-5:00 Pm, and November to december from 8:00 am – 4:00 Pm. They can be contacted at 270-343-3797. Mill Springs Battlefieldon January 19, 1862, General felix K. Zollicoffer and his confederate forces faced off against General George h. Thomas’ federal troops on a cold, rainy sunday morning near Logan’s crossroads in Kentucky, a sleepy little community about nine miles north of the cumberland

river. during the fall of 1861, Zollicoffer moved his army to mill springs. This action resulted in the combining of federal forces at Logan’s crossroads (now present day Nancy, Kentucky). realizing that the southern defensive line was threatened, Jefferson davis sent General George b. crittenden to take over command of Zollicoffer’s army. What transpired on that fateful day resulted in Zollicoffer’s death and the first major Federal victory of the war.

The rain, smoke, and fog caused visibility to be minimal and against the advice of his aids, Zollicoffer rode up the mill springs road. Unknowingly, he rode up to a Federal Officer from Danville, Kentucky named speed fry. realizing his mistake, Zollicoffer tried to bluff his way to safety and ordered Fry to stop firing on his own troops. Zollicoffer might have gotten away, had not one of his aides rode up shouting “General, they are the enemy” and fired upon Fry. The jig was up. Fry and his regiment opened fire. Zollicoffer and his two aides fell mortally wounded on the battlefield. After a bitter

fight along the split rail fence and bayonet charge by the 9th Ohio, the confederates retreated in disorder and crossed the cumberland river.

The confederate defeat had far reaching results during the following months. The Southern defensive line across Southern Kentucky/Northern Tennessee was weakened, which gave Union General Grant the chance to attack forts henry and donelson that led to the devastating battle of shiloh. The battle of mill springs became a footnote in history, being overshadowed by the larger battles of the civil War that followed.

It wasn’t until 1992 when the Mill Springs Battlefield Association was formed that the battle’s significance was brought back to life. since then the msba, with the help of the civil War Preservation Trust, the American Battlefield Protection Program, and other local, state, and federal funds, has acquired nearly 500 acres of battlefield land, restored two historic houses, created two walking trails, placed numerous interpretive signage, and built a 10,000 square foot visitor center. The visitor center, located in Nancy, Kentucky, acts as the information hub for the entire battlefield, including a museum. The visitor center receives thousands of visitors per year, many of them drawn in from the highway. The msba holds several annual events each year, including Living history Weekend and Ghostwalk, both held at Zollicoffer Park. for more information call 606-636-4045 or visit www.millsprings.net. Horse & Buggy Country InnHorse and Buggy Country Inn Bed and Breakfast is located in the rolling hills of the south fork mennonite community in Liberty, Kentucky. This great weekend getaway or overnight lodging is a rustic, log cabin bed and breakfast that has delighted many coming to enjoy the Lake cumberland region. It was founded by becky martin, daughter of sandra Tucker, matriarch and visionary of the Galilean Children’s Home.

sandra told her daughter about a dream that she had about becky opening a bed and breakfast. becky is very humble, like the rest of her family; however she knew if mamma was suggesting it, it had to be God’s plan for her. Today, becky and her family enjoy the many guests that come to this beautiful four bedroom log cabin that is nestled in pastures with cows, horses, and wildlife. becky’s cousin, Joey Tucker, co-owns and operates Woods Creek Outfitters, which offers hunting trips on their 2,500+ acres of managed land. If overnight lodging is desired, they can create packages that include overnight lodging, hunting trips, meals, and lots of fun. This is a perfect place to hunt for deer and turkey. spring, fall, and winter are perfect times to enjoy the bountiful hunting in the area and these hunting excursions have been a huge hit with outdoorsmen around the country. There are plenty of places to walk, hike, or take day trips to the many attractions

in casey county, including “annie’s” favorite, the south fork mennonite community. continental breakfast is provided at the horse and buggy country Inn and there are plenty of restaurants in the area, including the Bread of Life Café - their family restaurant that offers a scrumptious buffet with a fresh salad bar, delicious desserts, and much more. Bread of Life CaféBread of Life Café is a destination restaurant located

in Liberty, KY, of the Lake cumberland region. They feed thousands of hungry visitors every week. Their signature homemade yeast rolls - for which they are well known, hot buffet with mouthwatering country fried chicken, ham, catfish, hushpuppies, fresh vegetables, desserts, and their popular endless country breakfast bar on saturday mornings keep the diners coming back for more. Tour buses love this stop. even though it looks a lot like cracker barrel as you walk into the gift

store; you instantly know that it is different with its wide variety of merchandise, much of which is

handcrafted - includes candles, quilts, homemade fudge, fresh baked sourdough breads - all hand picked

by the owners/sisters, Becky and Jessica. However, all of this isn’t what makes the bread of Life café so unique. The restaurant is an outward testimony to the love of the late sandra Tucker and her husband, Jerry “dad” Tucker. The couple, for over forty years, worked selflessly giving and caring for less fortunate children. Dad and the children continue in this mission today. The children, some of whom had been abandoned, disfigured, disabled, or mentally challenged are given a safe and loving home offering them shelter, hope, faith, and love. In the early 1970’s, the then young couple (Jerry & sandy) wanted a large family. They started out by adopting a few children to add to their two biological daughters. all this grew into an abounding love and compassion for these “lil’ lambs” that need a place to call home and a family to love them. The saying “faith, hope and room for one more” takes on special meaning in this family. This amazing couple and family have cared for over 800 children from all over the world. They have adopted over thirty of them at their expanding home - the Galilean Children’s Home in Liberty, KY. Jerry and sandy traveled to Washington, d.c. in 1992 to receive the prestigious Points of

Light foundation volunteer service award from then President George h. W. bush. The Galilean children’s home has also been the recipient of a recurring grant from the honorable order of Kentucky colonels Good Works Program for their outstanding efforts on behalf of these children.

mrs. sandra Tucker passed away on June 18, 2007, but her legacy is carried on by the love of her life, husband Jerry, and her family. her vision and grace created the Galilean children’s home. she is referred to by many as a modern day mother Teresa in this part of Kentucky - and this part of the country for that matter. daughter, Becky, says that she can’t fill her Mom’s shoes, but she can try and walk in them. The family has done just that. The bread of Life café is a gathering place for great food and excellent service. It also gives many of the children that they have nurtured and loved a place to work if they are able. The family loves to meet people. The common occurrence of the tour buses that stop at the restaurant to enjoy the good ole’ country home cooking and atmosphere give them great pleasure. The freshly washed and rolled cloth napkins are an example of the attention to detail and to sandy’s desire to offer exceptional service and abundant, excellent food. The bread of Life café is located in Liberty, casey county, KY - known as the “farm Gate capital of the World” with the well known gate manufacturer, Tarter, employing over 600 people. The bread of Life café is also located near a small mennonite community with many shops, crafts, cheese, fresh produce, hand-made furniture, leather goods, and a greenhouse - all of whom love to have visitors. come experience a beautiful part of Kentucky, where freedom and love have a true significance, and you can see an example of God’s unconditional love through this amazing and steadfast test of faith with the Tucker family and The bread of Life café. The bread of Life café and the Galilean children’s home can be visited online through www.galileanhome.org.

Annie’s Travels and TreasuresManner’s Café & Soda Shop is a treasure in downtown Jamestown, KY. This 50’s style diner is the place to be for a homemade milkshake, juicy cheeseburger, sandwich, onion rings or an annie’s favorite - a good country breakfast. This historic building, which was built in 1921 in downtown Jamestown, has significant

meaning for many of the citizens of Jamestown and those who have visited the area. The diner was formerly known as Tanners, where folks congregated at the hometown diner for delicious food, piping hot coffee, and fellowship. This significant building sat empty for about twenty years, before ricky mann found a “for sale” sign on the property several years ago. he decided to buy the building and restore it to its original glory. ricky felt like it was his duty and it became his mission to reopen manner’s and offer tasty food and excellent service. Their slogan is “because nice matters”. The original black potbelly stove brings out the reds and yellows in the diner and compliments the lively atmosphere. come by and treat yourself to an old-fashioned milkshake or soda and sit on the stools at the original diner counter or one of the original booths from the 50’s. manner’s café & soda shop also does carry out and can be reached at 270-343-maNN (6266).

Carnegie Community Arts Center, “The Grande dame of somerset” is located in the old post office building in downtown somerset. a group of volunteers and visionaries set out to turn this beautiful three-story building, constructed in 1913, into a community arts center, studio, and gallery. The carnegie community arts center (ccac) opened in

december of 2008, a home for resident artists and their studios, art classes, events, and the Sheltowee Art Shop - a group of 75 juried artists in their guild who co-op to offer their juried works for sale in this beautifully laid out gift store. visiting the ccac in may was a special treat for me, as the traveling exhibit was a fantastic collection by split personality shirley mason, also known as sybil – for who’s life the book and movies were based. There were hundreds of pieces of her signed art projects and others unsigned (by her other personalities) at the gallery for visitors to admire. director diane Giddens and assistant director Laura coffey take pleasure in taking guests around the ccac and showing them the highlights of each exhibition. another place of interest is the wonderful Yellow Umbrella Bistro, a fine French market offering kitchen and bath furnishings and accessories, as well as authentic fine Kentucky Arts and Crafts. The Yellow Umbrella is a wonderful space with delightful crafts, delicious homemade cheeses, sauces, gourmet coffees, cappuccinos, hot chocolate, teas, and snacks. Located in the lower level of the ccac, many brides-to-be have their wedding showers/teas here or you can find girlfriends spending time together sipping on tea and enjoying the beautiful and invigorating atmosphere. The bistro area is a charming room decorated with old world flavor that is available for luncheons, parties, or meetings (with WIfI accessibility). come on over to ccac and visit their resident artists or partake in their classes that include art, music, yoga, dance, language, and theatre. visit ccac’s website for up-to-date information on events, visiting artists, and exhibitions: www.carnegiecac.com. They are open four days a week, Tuesday through fridays, 11 am – 5 Pm eastern Time. bon Journey! Tel: 606-677-0333.

Key West Boat Storage is a new luxury boat storage owned and operated by steve and Trish sauter of Louisville, KY. avid Lake cumberland boaters, this dynamic duo set out to build high end boat rental facilities that would allow them to enjoy their hobby, maximize their retirement, and to offer their

clients spacious, clean, well maintained boat facilities. steve has a landscaping business back home, and has worked to make the grounds at the facility inviting. as you drive up, you can see the beautifully manicured lawns, landscaped gardens, and walkways with a nautical feel around the property. This clearly differentiates their boat storage units from others around Lake cumberland. They wanted to build and create boat storage units that were bigger, better, and cleaner than what they had seen and once you see theirs, you will understand. They have 69 units with plans to expand and offer up to 200 units in the next few years. They believe in friendly, personal customer service, and preventive maintenance to their storage units to keep them in immaculate condition. They adjust the tension on the rollup door yearly and grease the springs and tracks to keep the doors gliding up and down easily. They also clean out the bays every year and power wash them to keep them neat and tidy. They pride themselves in having a lot of room, over 90’ of space, between buildings, so boaters have plenty of room to back up a larger vehicle, like a suburban, and their boat with no problem. They call Lake cumberland the “caribbean of Kentucky” and have raised their two girls, samantha and hailey, here. The family has spent countless hours of fun, relaxation, and quality time through the years. Trish says it is their way to detox after a hectic work schedule with the family business. They enjoy cooking and steve’s culinary skills surface while cooking for his wife and daughters. The day that my family and I were there, Food Network was on in the background while they were preparing “alaskan King crab”, some side dishes, and listening to some island music. Need a safe, secure place to store your boat, give Key West boat storage a call and let them spoil you! They can be contacted at 502-639-1277.

South Fork Furniture is a magnificent store offering authentic handcrafted amish furniture. The store is nestled in a quaint valley of south fork - a mennonite community settled in 1975. sipke and his wife, fay, hiemstra moved from the hustle and bustle of just outside of atlanta, Ga several years ago. They felt that

God was directing their family to a simpler life. both had thought about Kentucky and after prayerful consideration, landed in the beautiful casey county region where they bought a furniture store. They now have a very large selection of furniture, home accessories, baskets, candles and howard miller clocks to furnish your home, vacation cabin, or houseboat. If you can’t find what you are looking for, it’s no problem. They can handcraft custom furniture to your liking. one of my favorite pieces was a dual maple and walnut bedroom ensemble in a contemporary style, built with the fine craftsmanship that is expected in Amish furniture. Their slogan is “… Today’s quality furniture becomes tomorrow’s family heirloom…”, so you know they take great care with their work. The drawers were engineered to pull out completely and lock-in place for ease of use. It reminds me a lot of my cousin frank. Using his ingenuity and craftsmanship, he builds “umweltfreundlich” (environmentally friendly) furniture in southern Germany, in our multigenerational family trade which he has helped carry on after my Uncle Werner passed some years ago. The hiemstra family takes pride in offering quality furniture and pleasure in helping each visitor find their perfect piece, or bedroom or dining room furnishings to finish off their vacation home, houseboat, or family home. They have a wide variety of

Annie’s Travels and Treasuresdining and bedroom furniture in many styles from farmhouse, traditional, and country to contemporary. There are matching buffets, armoires, end tables, hutches, desks, and some really neat Tv stands with built-in dvd and video cabinets. They also have some gorgeous handcrafted baskets that will rival any Longenberger basket for less. These baskets are handmade by the Gingerich family and are all one-of-a-kind masterpieces signed by the individual family member that created it. another of my favorite items is their handcrafted wooden lazy susan that is made out of different woods and sizes. They would make a great gift for any occasion. I plan to present one to my mom, Gisela, as a 70th birthday present. They also have children’s furniture and toys, and precision howard miller clocks with cases handcrafted in the Us with German movements. stop by and visit sipke and fay and let them assist you in finding the furniture you desire. Make sure to say “dag” to sipke and fay and tell them that “annie” sent you. visit them online at www.southforkfurniture.com or give them a call today at 606-706-7722. happy shopping!

Hillside Greenhouses & Nursery, LLC is a premier greenhouse in southeastern Kentucky offering a wide, wide variety of plants, produce, and fresh fruits. They have one of the most extensive assortments of peppers, herbs, and tomatoes that I have ever seen; delighting many customers from near and far - over 80 different tomato varieties and some of the coolest peppers this side of the mississippi! during my visit they had in stock peppers such as super chili peppers, Tabasco, sweet havana peppers, and pimento just to name a few. They also carry what is probably the broadest selection of herbs in the region, including anise, stevia, roman chamomile, patchouli, lemon verbena, curry, and

so many more. Casey County Produce Auction is where you want to be on any monday, Wednesday, or friday throughout the year. If you are a home canner or put up food for the winter by another method, you won’t want to miss this stop! The farmers in this and surrounding communities bring their fresh produce and flowers to auction off to the highest bidder for a fair price. The energy at these auctions is infectious. everyone has a great time and feels like they are getting a great bargain in the best produce, flowers, and other sundries. merv hoover started out as a farmer in this beautiful valley many years

ago. Today with his son Paul and large family (11 children, all but 2 live and work in this community and pitch in to help with the variety of family businesses), they have several enterprises to serve the community, the visitor, and the many folks traveling for miles to buy the best produce, flowers, plants, and merchandise. You can’t get any fresher than what the casey county Produce auction has to offer and they strive to be fair to everyone. anyone can sell merchandise and anyone can buy. They have the tradition where every buyer and seller keeps their number. That way if you are a regular/loyal patron, you will get to know some of the other loyal merchants and traders - just like the dutch traders many centuries ago. The casey county Produce auction is hopping during these three days and they take pride in selling to roadside markets, restaurants, landscapers, individuals, and to folks canning or making jellies and jams. In the winter months, the auction sells hay and farm supplies to the farmers around casey county and the surrounding area. on October 16th, come experience a new event - a consignment auction where anything will go, such as farm implements, tractors, merchandise, furniture, boats, and whatever you can bring down. This is sure to be a huge event at a beautiful time of the year when you can also experience the blanket of fall colors. come enjoy the colors, smells, sounds, and sights of the casey county Produce auction and make sure to tell Paul, the apprentice auctioneer, “hello from annie”. You can reach them by phone at 606-787-5158. happy sales!
