Editorial The Lake Grace Land Conservation District Committee is holding their AGM on Monday 30th April, we

desperately need more interest to keep this group going. If you would like to attend, it starts at 10am at the Community Resource Centre. Everyone is welcome!

A big thank you to those who have got in notes for their various sporting clubs for this fortnights Lakes Link, your hard work is appreciated.

Well done to Grant Medlen for winning the latest photo competition. It’s a fantastic photo which he persevered to get so thank you very much for sharing with us. Our next photo competition (closing on 14th June) is Transport. I’m hoping we get a variety of photos for everyone to look at and vote on. We will be hosting a youth photography competition for the next school holidays.

Quite regularly a customer will come into get something done and inadvertently find out about ‘other things’ that can be done at the CRC and will then state ‘I didn’t know you did that’. It’s always quite difficult to get the information out there about what we can do for you (word of mouth is the best) so on page 16 I have collated a list of what we do. I’m sure I have missed a few things but here’s hoping everyone gets a clearer picture of the facilities that are available to them at the Community Resource Centre.

We are hoping to get a chainsaw workshop off the ground, if you’re interested then please let me know; we do

need eight for this to go ahead, this workshop will be done through TAFE in Narrogin. We also have another Skippers Ticket for October and a second Forklift Ticket for July. If you can think of anything else that Lake Grace needs then please let us know and we’ll have a go at sourcing a trainer, we do need the numbers to run these workshops though.

Boating is the subject for Jane’s ‘Funny Farm Yarns’, if you have any stories that you’d love to share please ring us at the CRC or send us an email.

Also looking for anyone interested in talking about a part of their life with Jane for Jane’s Stories.

Well done to Tahryn Gray & Damien Trevenen who announced their engagement last weekend while celebrating Damien’s 30th birthday. All the best for a long and happy future to you both.

Sincere sympathy to Kristie, Derek, Tess and Alby Stanton following the recent passing of Kristie’s father, Trevor Hobley.

Andrology Australia Ambassador and former Test cricketer Merv Hughes will soon be on his way to Ravensthorpe in Western Australia, to encourage men to talk about their “tackle”.

Merv will be speaking at a men’s health day on Saturday, June 2, organised by Hopetoun/Ravensthorpe Medical Centre.

He will be joined by local GP Dr Manus Lochner who will talk in more detail about specific health issues. Several community members will also talk about their experiences with prostate cancer.

Merv, who has been an ambassador for men’s health organisation Andrology Australia since 2006, said blokes in general “don’t like to talk about the bits below the belt”.

“Let’s face it. Unless the subject is sport, men aren’t always the best talkers. And we really struggle when it comes to talking about problems ‘down there’,” he said. “But as you get older, it’s more and more important to address health concerns early while you’re in the best position to deal with them.”

Merv said reproductive health problems (like prostate disease) were common, and some issues were linked with more serious conditions like diabetes or heart disease.

“Basically, if you’re having problems with your ‘tackle’, the longer you say nothing, the less your doctor will be able help you. “Men all over Australia do have problems – so if you’re having problems, you’re not on your own.”

Event organiser and local practice nurse Julia Bell said she hoped the men of Ravensthorpe, Hopetoun and surrounding areas would stop and take notice of what Merv had to say.

“This is a great opportunity to hear Merv have a yarn about cricket, but also for locals to think about and take home some important health information,” Ms Bell said. Free men’s health resources will be provided by Andrology Australia at the events. For more information on male reproductive health conditions visit www.andrologyaustralia.org.

Safe Keeping As part of the 2012 WA Heritage Festival, the National Trust of Australia (WA) is hosting an exhibition “Safe Keeping” in the Perth Town Hall. The theme for the Heritage festival is Inventions and Innovations, celebrates Australia’s past, present and future heritage and the resourcefulness of its people. The Heritage Festival runs for a month from April 18 to May 18. Artists were invited to create an original piece of art for the “Safe Keeping” exhibition, which relates or responds to the Coolgardie safe. Thirty artists responded to the Coolgardie safe for this exhibition and 28 pieces were created. Two Lake Grace artists Kerrie Argent and Tania Spencer created their own artwork to exhibit in the “Safe Keeping” exhibition. The Coolgardie safe was created for keeping food and water cool in Australia’s hot climate. A Coolgardie safe is a rectangular metal frame with hessian sides. Water was poured into a galvanized iron tray on top of the frame and strips of flannel hung over the sides. Water from the flannel strips would drip down the hessian sides, keeping them damp. Coolgardie safes were positioned in an area where wind would pass through to evaporate the water and keep the interior of the Coolgardie safe cool. Opening night on April 18th saw around 100 people gather to see what artists can create using a Coolgardie safe as the basis of their artwork. Works were inspected and comments were made. Everyone who went to the opening of “Safe Keeping” found that the artwork was fascinating, interesting and quite unique. Kerrie Argent’s artwork is titled “Price Alone” and is made from wood, hessian, silk, cotton, jute, wool, natural dyes, rust and tannin. Kerrie Argent’s artist statement for the artwork is: “Shape and form Materials and function Protection and preservation When we shop do we look at where it comes from? Do we just shop on price alone? Sometimes we do not have a choice. Keep safe the seeds of an industry that is struggling to survive? Grown on our own land, fresh, healthy and clean, Or do we just shop on price alone. Protect what is ours Know the strict guide lines that are expected to be adhered to Or do we just accept whatever And shop by price alone. Is it accepted what is dumped on our shores sold cheaply just to get rid of it? Kept in cold storage for how long and shipped over

huge oceans. Of course we shop by price alone. Or do we protect our own industries? Some do and some don’t.” As one of the larger pieces in the exhibition, Kerrie Argent has used a hand-made Coolgardie safe and replicated the shape using gimlet trees. Square boxes were created from hessian and silk to give a way to save the seeds of food for future generations when there is nothing left.

“Asparagus (asparagoides) - A(veil)able from Your Garden”, another large artwork in the exhibition, is Tania Spencer piece for the exhibition. Made from galvanized wire, the statement for Tania Spencer’s work is: “The lacy delicate exotic green foliage, attractive white flowers and plump red berries of Bridal Creeper enticing you to plant it in the garden.

Junior Golf starts

Sunday 29th April 9:30am start

Juniors can be 7 years or older Golf clubs available if needed.

Everyone Welcome!

It may have simply looked like people lolling about on lawn chairs but it was actually volunteers hard at work encouraging drivers to stop, take a break, stretch their legs and have a coffee. Following on from the Blessing of the Roads ceremony held on Thursday 5th April, the driver reviver van was in position with volunteers encouraging drivers to have a free coffee and take some time for a chat. Fire Brigade, Lions and Ambulance volunteers manned the van on Easter Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday; with drivers encouraged to fill in a little questionnaire with a simple but tricky question to put themselves in the running to win a $30 Dymocks voucher. Comments made by the drivers were very positive with one declaring that Lake Grace’s van was the ‘friendliest stop they’d ever made’. There was also a ‘nice cake’ comment so once again someone was baking. Of the 57 who had filled in the questionnaire only five had never heard of Driver Revivers and a further 22 had never before stopped for a free coffee. Naturally they all thought it was a great idea with many thinking there should be more of them. With 252 drivers stopping, the van is a phenomenal success. Positioned at ‘The Shed’, a popular stop off for tourists in the main street of Lake Grace it is perfectly placed to catch as many drivers as possible. The question for the drivers this time was; ‘What is the current number of hours that learner drivers have to complete for their logbook before they are able to progress toward becoming a probationary driver?’ Roadwise secretary, Suzanne Reeves, thought this question could be a little tricky as there had been plenty of conversation about change and that there is a change scheduled for 2013. However the bulk of the participants (40) were correct with their answer of 25 hours. Well done to Clayton White of Narrogin who won the Dymocks voucher. Grateful drivers were very supportive of the RFDS donation tin with $281.85 being slipped in. The Roadwise committee would like to thank the many volunteers who put in the time to take part in manning the van, if you would like to give a few hours of your time over a long weekend to drink coffee and chat then the Roadwise committee would like to hear from you.

Easter Holiday Traffic

For obvious reasons we were out on the roads for the entire Easter Long Weekend from Maundy Thursday until Easter Monday. Thanks to all those involved in the ‘blessing of the roads’ and for including our safety in those prayers because we certainly covered a multitude of kilometres over the five days. Thanks also to those who manned the Driver Reviver Van, - you will never know if your efforts averted an injury or worse. And finally thanks to all in our local communities for driving so responsibly which resulted in no tragedies locally. I make the point because in our travels Steve and I attended at the scene of the fatal caravan crash just outside Ravensthorpe and saw just how quickly it all went wrong for a family of five. The husband / father died at the scene and a little boy, a twin, is fighting for his life on life support in PMH.

Back to School Safety

The Great Southern District Office is highlighting road safety for the return to school week. Please be conscious of the kids returning to school and be advised that we have been ordered to give our schools some attention. We may well be operating radar or laser in our school zones and issuing infringement notices to any drivers caught speeding.

Found Property with a Twist.

I was the only officer working last Monday when a mature gentleman came into the police station and said he wanted to hand in some found property. Moments later he reappeared with his wife in tow carrying a lamb. I said, wait, wait, wait a minute, what the?

But we found it all alone on the side of the road, he says. He’s beautiful, wife says. Come on, I said, does this look like an animal shelter to you? Well what are we supposed to do we’re from Victoria travelling Aus in our caravan. Fine, into the Courthouse waiting room until one of the local farmers can throw this orphan in with his own lambs. So I call on Chris C for help and he comes down to the station. After laughing at me for having put down a saucer of milk, he says the lamb is only 2 days old and starts talking about baby bottles, special powdered milk and 4.00am feeds. This to me, a born and bred city boy who had his own children convinced that milk and eggs really did come from the shop until school teachers exposed me as a fraud. Anyway his advice, con, I mean ‘convince’ a family with small children to take this orphan as a project. Enter Melissa, Jamaine and Syrahn Ratana who are now the proud surrogate parents to the said lamb who now apparently thinks it’s a dog. Along the way I’d also like to thank Rhiannon Wallace at Landmark for writing out some helpful instructions and Karel Walker at Elders for donating the special powdered milk to the Ratana family for being good enough to take the orphan in. If anyone is wondering why I haven’t mentioned Max in the equation it’s because according to daughter Syrahn “Dad just calls him dinner”. Mother Nature’s Skyshow was the winner of the Lake Grace CRC’s most recent photo competition. Well done to Grant Medlen who was in the right place at the right time to get this glorious photo that not only displays Perth’s CBD nightlights but also what Mother Nature can supply when she’s in the mood.

Both Grant and Trish Medlen were at this years Skyshow taking images of the fireworks when they got an even grander display of lightning. With two cameras set up on tripods, and photographs being taken every minute for a couple of hours it was a game of chance for the Medlen’s as to whether they were going to get the photo of a lifetime!

Although there were only seven photos entered in the competition, the standard of photography was excellent; with rainbows, clouds chasing clouds, lightning with unusual light colour and some very threatening looking rain clouds.

The competition remains very popular with the voters, with all entries receiving votes. There was plenty of positive comments, not just for the spectacular lightning shot but also for those that depicted the Lake Grace landscape. This is why popular choice remains the best way to choose a winner!

Two hundred and forty votes were recorded with Mr

Medlen receiving 106 of these. Well done to Grant! The CRC will be running another photo competition that will close on Thursday 14th June, the subject this time will be TRANSPORT. Could be trains, planes, automobiles, boats, bikes, trucks or even the original mode of transport Shanks’s Pony.

The CRC will also be running a youth photo competition that will close in July of this year. We will have more details in coming editions of the Lakes Link News.

That’s Striking!

PINGARING GOLF CLUB

We often talk about the dangers of stress in our lives but perhaps we need to remember that it is stress that actually gets us through the day. What we would be better to talk about is excessive stress or having too many things that are stressful in our lives; this can then lead us to a point of “Distress.”

Most people will experience “Distress” from time to time and it is important to recognize how we react to these situations. Very often we unwittingly cause significant damage to those closest to us because of our behaviour when in “Distress.”

Some common reactions to “Distress” are temper outbursts, lack of sleep, excessive alcohol consumption, feeling alone and isolated and a strong sense that no one cares. Our reactions to “Distress” attribute to people avoiding us and so the sense of loneliness escalates. The unfortunate consequence is that if we are suffering from “Distress” it is probably the most important time when we need family and friends for support.

It is often said that “a problem shared is a problem halved” have you ever considered why that may work? Talking about the problem can create a word

picture and may create additional ideas, provide clarification and help gather perspective to come to a resolution.

At this time of year, with budgets and bank reviews occurring, keep in mind the importance of clear thinking. Don’t let personal reactions to “Distress” push friends and family away. We need to know our particular reactions to distress and guard against the negatives they may create. We also need to be patient with the people who care about us, even if they don’t understand our problems specifically, talking it over will help put things in perspective and may create solutions.

Remember our slogan …before it all gets too much…TALK TO A MATE and know who your mates are!

Have a good day. Regards Julian Tel: (08)96 902 277 Email: [email protected]

It’s wiry resilience, establishing its stranglehold on the environment, twisting, tangling and climbing its way, further expanding the infestation. Unseen, underground tubers and rhizomes link together, a dense mat endlessly multiplying. The seed dispersal by birds, foxes, and rabbits giving rise to new patches of these insidious weeds. The creeper drapes and veils native plants. Native plants, no longer there. Safe Keeping, a medium for proliferation of information.” Tania Spencer stated that the “Bridal Creeper was introduced into Australia in the late 1850's and became very popular as a foliage plant for bridal bouquets. By 1920 it was naturalised and became a major pest in

forests and waterways. This plant wipes out every native plant where it grows and is very hard to kill once established.” All work made by the 30 artists is completely different. Artists have worked inside, outside, next to or around the Coolgardie safe in a variety of mediums and subject matter. Drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, audio and jewellery making are some of the techniques used by the artists to create their artworks. “Safe Keeping” is open from April 18 to May 17 in the Perth Town Hall foyer and is open from 10am to 4pm daily.

The 39 Steps Laughter was heard from the start to the end of “The 39 Steps”. Around 60 people arrived at the Lake Grace Shire Hall to enjoy a live comedy performance. “The 39 Steps” was presented by the South West Academy of Performing Arts and Bare Naked Theatre Company. There for the show to run smoothly was Director Michael Taylor, Terry Thompson as Co-producer and Stage Manager and the actors performing “The 39 Steps” Russell Chandler, Kylie-Maree Bywaters, Craig Williams and Emily Brown. The script allowed the actors to maintain non-stop action to keep the audience breathless, as you might see in an Alfred Hitchcock movie, with the dashing hero caught up in the thrill of the chase with the law and a dastardly villain and then entwining that with the romantic thread of the hero and a trio of beautiful heroines to keep your hearts a-flutter. “The 39 Steps” was clever, lots of physical comedy, a little bit tongue-in-cheek, naughty but also family friendly. To keep the tickets inexpensive, the audience was asked to bring a plate of food to share at interval time. There was a delicious spread of yummy food to enjoy and gave the audience the chance to have a chat to the director Michael Taylor and co-producer Terry Thompson. During this time people made comments that the show was fantastic, wonderful and wondered as to why more people weren’t there to also enjoy it. Producers Russell Chandler and Terry Thompson stated that ‘ “The 39 Steps” is

our travelling show for 2012 and this year we take in a number of new destinations including Lake Grace, Gnowangerup, Beverley and Narrogin. Wherever we travel, we always receive a warm welcome and we always hope to return in future years bringing entertainment and positive experiences as we go. Our sincere hope is that you have a joyous experience witnessing this show and then travel home with a night to remember.’ The Lake Grace Multi Artspace hosted “The 39 Steps” and hopes to bring another show to Lake Grace next year.

Sit back Lake Grace and enjoy the story of Lake Grace businessman, Steve McPherson. Anyone wanting to tell their stories please contact the CRC on 9865 1470 I was born on the 23

rd of October 1954 in Dunedin, NZ.

Along with my 3 brothers and 2 sisters I grew up in the small town of Alexandra in the middle of the South Island. It was a cold place made worse by the fact that I had to go to school in short pants. In 1970 aged 15 I left school and went to work as a Roustabout, the money was huge we were on $1 an hour. At the same time my dad was earning 85c an hour as a mechanic. I started shearing full time at 17 and shore my first 200 in 1972, the day before my 18

th

birthday. For the next five years I shore all through the North and South Islands. In February 1978 I came to Australia with my then two year old daughter, Lisa, with the intention of shearing for 6 months, that was 34 years ago. Shearing around Western NSW and South Western Queensland back then was very primitive with no electricity and very little refrigeration. The union culture in the shearing industry was very strong, there were a lot of rules and you voted on everything. If shearers didn’t like the sandwiches they would take a vote and sack the cook. If there was a race meeting somewhere they decided the sheep would need a vote. They hated Kiwi’s with their wide gear and willingness to work. A wet sheep in NZ being very different to one in outback NSW. Taken from The Eclipse of Mateship: The 'Wide Comb Dispute'1979-85 by RORY O'MALLEY In the early 1980s the Australian shearing industry was torn apart by the 'wide comb dispute'. This occupied the Arbitration Commission for over four years, while intimidation of 'scabs' and woolshed arson ensured it caught the urban public's imagination. The rich mythology of the 1890s and the mystery of why shearing equipment aroused such passions seemed related. An intriguing dimension was that the offending combs had been introduced by New Zealanders. The deeper cultural issue was the New Zealanders' weak unionism. The core dispute, however, was between the newly formed National Farmers Federation, energised by new ideas of how Australian society should be organised, and the Australian Workers Union (AWU). Living in Mudgee in Central NSW during the big union dispute I was one of the main scabs. I was branded a scab because I had a family and I wanted to go to work and I could see no reason why we couldn’t go to work. There was a lot of violence towards those who wanted to work, we had our house smashed up, a wool shed was bombed, death threats and cars burned. We put up with that for a couple of years.

Kim and son Trevor, born in 1978, came from Orange. Kim had never set foot in a shearing shed before she met me. Kelly was born in 1982. Tired of the trouble in NSW we moved to Lucindale in South Australia in 1985. A very green place just like NZ we really loved it. While living there I worked at Commonwealth Hill Station, a two and a half million acre property. At that time it ran 92 000 sheep taking 8 shearers two and a half months to cut them out. I ran fourth and averaged 196 sheep a day for the shed. Kim and Kelly stayed in the caravan park at Cooper Pedy. I would shear all week and go to Cooper Pedy for the weekend. While we were there I bought Kim a really expensive ring with a big opal but she was never game to wear it, she hung on to it for 17 years and gave it to Kelly for her 21

st.

When Lomas was born in Narrocorte in 1988 I was shearing round the South East of SA and Western District of Victoria and Broken Hill for 5 years. Then in 1992 I did a season on Kangaroo Island and worked at Roxby Downs in SA. Kim cooked at times for 18 people with the same contractor. It was at Echo station in 1984 that Steve made it into ‘This Fabulous Century’ for shearing 426 sheep in one day when 200 was a big number. Women’s Weekly were doing an article on the next door property when news came thru that Steve had shorn all these sheep. Women’s Weekly went out to Echo Station the next day only to find all the sheep had been shorn. Somehow they managed to round up a couple for Steve and his brother to shear for a photo. Steve was a bit reluctant to tell me his best shearing tally for a day but persistence paid off. His biggest tally was 550 done in NZ aged about 20 In the winter of 1992 I came to Narembeen to shear. When I left Kim had a little belly, when I got back she had a big belly, Amber was born in Kingston, South Australia in 1993. That same year we all came to Narembeen going back to SA in 1994 and making the decision to move here in 1995. We could see there was more opportunity for the kids.

I shore for Joe Duff at Newdegate, I knew him from my shearing days in NZ. At the same time Kim lived in the caravan park with the kids and cooked for Willy Henry’s shearing team. Before long I moved to LG and shore for John Griffin, Kim roustabouted and cooked. I always maintain you need to be good friends with the bloke penning up, the bloke counting out and the one feeding you. By 1998 I was getting sore and the bones were wearing out so I bought a crutching cradle and built up a crutching run. In 2010 we bought the mobile sheep dip. Nowadays Lomas does all the day to day hands on running of the business, Kim and I want to spend time with and spoiling our 12 grandkids. We try to get back to NZ most years. One thing we don’t hanker to do in our retirement is go round Australia in a caravan. We spent 15 years doing that. Shearing stories While shearing in Western NSW this shearer came running into the shed, claiming while he had been in the long drop he had been bitten on the bum by a snake. The Wool classer had a look and confirmed he could see the puncture marks so the RFDS was called. A couple of blokes took a shotgun to the long drop to

identify the snake; They got in there only to find a chook stick its head out. Shearing out at Quambone I stuck the tooth of a comb under my fingernail, it was bleeding a bit so I went to the cook house for the first aid kit. I walked past a couple of long drop dunnies on the way. I noticed the door wide open and sitting on the seat was the cook peeling spuds for tea. He didn’t last long that bloke!

We also have a phone that customers can use to call the Call Centre.

Other Training: The CRC also sources training workshops for Skippers Tickets, Responsible Service of Alcohol, Licensed Managers Ticket, Chemcert, Agrimaster, Forklift and Chainsaw. These courses are reliant on the needs and wishes of the local community.

Photo Printing: Glossy photos of 4” x 6” (standard) and 6” x 8” are able to be printed on the photo booth. The photo booth also prints calendars, images with borders and collages. We can also shrink the photos down to print smaller however the images would have to be trimmed.

Scanning: The CRC has an excellent scanner that can scan negatives, slides, photographs and documents. These can then be burned to a CD or DVD and/or printed. We also have a scanner that can convert a scanned document into word text, or we can scan a multipage document into a single pdf document.

Photocopying: We can photocopy anything up to A3 (twice the size of this page) in both black and white and colour. Items can be increased in size or decreased (very handy for the crafty people).

Community Housing The Shire is currently reviewing the management of its housing stocks. In all, the Shire has 26 community housing properties which has become too difficult for it to manage and is no longer cost effective. Council has resolved to look into handing the management of these properties over to a community housing growth provider who has the capacity, financial resources and expertise to manage these properties. Such a growth provider will be able to: Maintain the properties to the required standard; Offer 30% of the housing stocks to key workers throughout the Shire. At this point the Shire can only offer a

community house to a single person on an annual income of $22,500. The growth provider can offer the same house to a single key worker with an income of $55,160 or a couple on $76,258;

Set up a joint management committee between the growth provider and the Shire regarding the selection of eligible tenants.

Further information is available in the minutes of the March Council meeting with information to the public to follow.

SCP Activities

The State’s Local Government Reform Program

(Integrated Planning and Reporting Framework, 2011).

requires local governments to undertake ‘integrated

strategic planning’ which includes the engagement and

partnering of local residents to identify and work towards

a Strategic Community Plan (SCP). While Strategic

Planning is not a new concept to Local Government, the

Reform has stipulated that transparent and accountable

community engagement is essential to ensure a whole

of community outcome. This plan will then be activated

into a Shire Corporate Business Plan.

In the next couple of months the Shire of Lake Grace

communities will be invited to participate in the SCP

community engagement activities; the aim to have as

many people engaged to share their vision and

aspirations for the Shire and its communities and to

actively be involved in diverse conversations on how to

achieve those aspirations.

This project will be overseen by the below Community

stages encourage a democratic outcome for all.

Boggle We invite you to play a game of boggle with us each fortnight. Words need to be 4 letters or more and in (Suzanne’s)

Collins dictionary. Your list needs to be emailed, faxed or dropped into the

CRC by 4pm Friday 4th May. No swear words, plurals, names or hyphenated words. Letters can be randomly selected and used but word must

contain the middle letter. The person who has the most (legitimate) words will win a bag of snakes (not the bitey ones) and their list will go in next fortnight’s edition of the Lakes Link News. We have succumbed to the pressure...all words must use the centre letter. For this fortnight every word must have an ‘R’ in it.

Funny Farm Yarns - Public Transport Rush hour A group of Lake Grace friends met at the Baileys in Perth, they had purchased tickets months ago for Phantom of the Opera’ and were looking forward to the show. It was the intention of the group to ‘unwind’, get dressed and head for the train station in plenty of time but some took longer preening themselves so the party was later setting off than anticipated. The usual 15 min leisurely walk was accomplished in half that time as the urgency became realised. As one the group stopped to view the train route. A train came into view going ‘our way’. Two of the party took off thinking the rest of were following. Puffing audibly they boarded the train and found a seat expecting to see the rest doing the same. The doors shut and the train began moving. “Oh well, we will wait for the others at the Burswood” they decided. Only when the train didn’t stop at the next station did they realise they were on the express to Armadale!!! Jane Bushby

Train Hold up Lynnette and I had been shopping together in the city one day, and as there were things we each still wanted to do, we arranged to meet at the underground railway in an hour, for our trip home. As I arrived at the station, I was aware that a train was in and it was almost time for it to leave, and as I observed Lynnette sitting waiting, I raced to the doorway and called Lynnette, while spreading my arms to hold the doors open. After we were seated, a voice came over the intercom, "To that person who held the doors open, you can expect a $200 fine coming your way!" I knew that person was me, but wondered how would they know it was me? As the train journeyed on to our station, I was expecting a guard to come and take details from me for my misdemeanor, to collect the fine. By the time we arrived at our station, no one had come, so at the office there, I dobbed myself in, telling them what I had done, and where was I to pay my fine? The lady there said she knew nothing about it, and thought I would hear no more about it - "The drivers get pretty cranky at times when people do things to hold up their schedule, and I think it was just a warning to you, " she said.

Allan Zweck. Recovered Treasure I had had a good day at the Battye Library, and as I walked quickly to the underground station, I was holding in my right hand, a roll of nine copies of coloured lithographs, in A3 size, of early Pingrup. As I came down the escalator to the train, I knew it was soon to depart, so I ran to the carriage door, but as I stopped to board, eight of the litho's on the inside of my roll kept going! They slid out, hit the carriage, and dropped down onto the train track. I only had a split second to decide, - that I would remain, and see what chance there was of recovering my valuable documents.

After the train pulled out, I could see them all below on the track, so I quickly went to an official and told him of my plight, asking if there was any chance of recovering them. His answer gave me much hope, and as he went to get a gadget to recover them, I watched my documents, as another train pulled in - which scattered them further along the line!

It was rush hour, with hundreds of passengers lining the platform; however, oblivious to the crowd, the man recovered all but one, by lying on the platform, and reaching as far as he could, under "my supervision." The last one was right over the other side of the track. He was about to go and get a longer tool, but I suggested, "Why don't we wait for the next train, the wind it creates may bring it closer?" And sure enough, it did, though there were two wheel marks across one corner. Surviving four trains passing over them, and hundreds of passengers watching the debacle, of myself and an assistant, my treasured documents were rescued.

Seeding 2012

The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder which means seeding will soon be upon us. We have a large range of H.I.D and L.E.D work lights in various spread patterns to suit most applications. LED lights are better

suited to closer range flood type situations, whereas HID lights have greater penetration and are better suited to distance applications. LED technology is moving rapidly and will soon overtake a lot of HID worklights. Here are some

specials below.

Apprenticeship

I have extended the application time for an Automotive electrical apprenticeship until the end of September 2012. this will allow any prospective

applicants time to organise some work experience should they so wish and finish their year 12 studies. So if you are serious about an apprenticeship,

please get a resume together and pop it into the store or post it. I need you.

Things are progressing well with the Men’s Shed - maybe a little more slowly than we would have liked, but progressing all the same. At the moment we are busy gathering local support by means of sponsorship, which we hope will be matched with grant funding in the not too far away future. We are also conducting a battery drive, for which we would greatly appreciate any old or unwanted batteries (please see below for details).

Many thanks to everyone who has shown their support for the Men’s Shed. It has been a great project and we look forward to having the project completed later this year. This is what has happened so far: The block has been surveyed out so we know the exact boundaries; The Public Transport Authority has confirmed they have no objection to the development proposal—great news; The Bureau of Meteorology have confirmed that they support the site development plan—

also great news; The site development plan was approved by Council last year; and the project will be presented again to Council, once the we have more specific working drawings; Sponsorship is currently being sought . We are now looking to have more detailed and specific working drawings completed, which will then pave the way for the issuance of the building licence. If you are interested in supporting the Men’s shed or interested in a sponsorship opportunity, please contact Phil Clarke 0427 651 155, Allan Duckworth 0427 651 567 or Stephanie Clarke-Lloyd on 0408 949 759. We will keep you updated as things progress. We look forward to seeing you at the shed very soon! The Lake Grace Community Men’s Shed Committee.

********************************************************************************* The Men’s Shed in conjunction with the Lions Club of Lake Grace is continuing with their battery drive. Batteries can be left at Farm Works or call Phil Clarke on 0427 651 155 or Allan Duckworth on 0427 651 567 if you require them to be picked up. We thank you for your ongoing support.

Hi and Congratulations to all members - Lake Grace Camera Club has now officially been running for two years and what an awesome two years it has been. As you are aware I started off this year as Vice and moved into the Presidency role when Michelle Dunham unfortunately put in her resignation, I felt I had big shoes to fill as it was a new club that Michelle and Cheryl Chappell took on, and I didn’t want it to slip into a non-existent state. I have given this club everything I could and look forward to a new exciting year full of adventures. Our photo cards at the Visitor Centre continue to grow and are selling extremely well - we have sold 130 cards during 2011 - it’s a fabulous display and promotion for the club. You never realise how much has been achieved until you start writing an annual report like this to when you realise WOW we have achieved so much! We started with a trip to Marshall’s property where we rambled around an old homestead; many photos were taken there as well as around the shearing shed. We then ventured to another venue on Marshall’s property where we strolled around an amazing garden that was surrounded by old machinery - add a dark sky for atmosphere and the setting was perfect as we waited for sunset. Thanks to Marshall’s for their support. A highlight would be when our “Master of Inspiration” Snapper Bill returned “home” for the weekend - it was full on from a Friday evening catch up and award ceremony, to the early morning sunrise shoot across the lake. We travelled to Argent’s farm and were inspired by the retro car graveyard; the afternoon was spent learning more about post production in Lightroom. We finished the evening with a sunset shoot on the Main Street and tea at the Hotel. Sunday was another exciting day with a shoot at the AIM hospital where we concentrated on various objects of all sizes from every angle possible! After lunch was spent in front of our laptops learning more on Lightroom and Photoshop and our new favourite HDR program with its fabulous enhancements effects that created plenty of reaction amongst its members. The weekend ended with a trip to the White Cliffs to watch as “Magic Hour” set in over the cliffs. It was a weekend totally enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Argent’s, Stephanie Clarke-Lloyd, FORM and of course Snapper Bill for a weekend of learning and tonnes of fun. The Newdegate Machinery Field Day was also held and the LG Snappers contributed many photos to the display and the group won seven prizes in total - what a fantastic effort!

Tom Dobranski ventured to Lake Grace for the afternoon on a sunny winters day to teach us a few tips and hints about landscape photography. The afternoon was spent at Rhynie and we started with basic knowledge of our cameras and various settings and the importance of balancing your photo with rule of thirds, leading lines, angles etc. All elements to help capture the perfect landscape photo. The afternoon finished with a sunset shoot. Many thanks to Bennett’s and of course Tom - whom we hope to see back in LG one day! Peter Dines took us on, as a large group of eager participants (all at various levels) and taught us the basics of where to start in Photoshop. Over two nights we learnt many techniques some being the Magic Extractor tool and Layers - what are they and how to use them. Many thanks to Peter and LGDHS. The biggest project of the year would have to be the centenary project of capturing ‘People in front of their house’. I don’t think anyone would have realised the challenge that was in front of us when this topic was first bought to the table. However with Cheryl’s constant encouragement we kept at it with members walking the streets to snap families in front of their homes. Before long we tackled businesses as well! With great support from the community we had over 250 photos. A sponsorship was received from the Williamson’s and we were able to print these photos for a display at the Village Hall over the Centenary Weekend. For myself it was a buzz to watch everyone as they poured through the doors to view the display. Huge thanks to Cheryl for her determination and to all members and the community for their support. This project though didn’t end there - we had a fabulous collection of photos and with determination and team work we compiled the photos together and produced a book which to date has sold 55 copies. Again massive thanks to all and the book is still available if anyone wants to purchase a copy. The display also reappeared at the Artspace for the LG Harvest Festival where it stayed in the window for several weeks getting lots of views and tonnes of positive comments - Thanks again to the members and the LG Artists Group. We also braved the elements and ventured to Dingo Rock for the afternoon where we strolled around the rock and throughout the bushland at the base, finishing with afternoon tea. We kick started 2012 with a relaxing catch up BBQ at the Swimming Pool which was enjoyed by all - how often can you buy an ice cream half way through a meeting!

Flickr is something that has kept the group going in between photo shoots. Many laughs from various photos and comments have been had as well as we challenge ourselves to display our latest and best photo. Again what a buzz when you log on to not only see that someone has viewed your photo but acknowledged it with a comment (all constructive and positive of course!). The biggest highlight for the year would have to be our trip to Karijini National Park where a small group of us have just returned from. After a long drive and battling the humidity, we climbed down various steep gorges, and at times just sat there in a complete awe of the fabulous view in front of us. The further through the gorges you went the more you kept seeing the beauty of it all unfold before us. Whether it be the bright and deep colours that seemed to jump out at you, the flowing waterfalls, the cool refreshing pools we swam in at the bottom or maybe it was just that huge sense of accomplishment knowing that you conquered at times a difficult journey of climbing, (with camera’s, backpacks and tripods in tow) sliding and swimming to get to the end where we relished in taking heaps of photos. It was a great week

and I personally wish to thank Grant, Peter and his family, Snapper Bill and our newest recruit Snapper Don for making this a trip of a lifetime that I for one will never forget. Thanks needs to go to many people, firstly Debbie Clarke from the LGDA for not only the associations support but her personal support especially with the People and their Houses project. To Michelle Dunham for helping to get this year off to a fabulous start, Cheryl Chappell who has not only done the job of compiling newsletters, minutes and answering my emails at all hours of the day and night but for her dedication she has put into the club. To Jayne Argent for keeping our financials in good order, to my hubby Grant for the moral support when projects took priority over housework and last but not least every single one of our members for your support and encouragement you have not only shown me but the club. THANK YOU Trish Medlen President - Lake Grace Camera Club

Lake Grace Pingrup Football Club The annual footy club jumper presentation which included the announcement of the netball and hockey teams was held last Thursday night, 19th April.

Present was one of the largest number of players and supporters seen for many years and included school holiday kids taking advantage of the occasion.

The football club had already had two football events prior to this, the first being the annual mini carnival held in conjunction with the Pingrup Races day, which was a huge success. All the teams indicated that they would be back next year. This carnival certainly adds to the success of the race day with the extra numbers it attracts.

A scratch match was held against Kukerin at Kukerin on Friday evening on March 30th and was a great night by all accounts.

Back to the present and the first game of the year which was at home against Jerramungup with Lake Grace-Pingrup being fortunate to have the services of Mark Pinney as our league coach again and Nick (tricky) Smith as our A Reserve coach.

With some 56 players to select two teams from the Resies were well represented with older and young players including the school boarders who are always welcome to participate when home. Gives the old guys a break with the old wounds that most of them carry.

LGPFC A Reserves The Resies game commenced at 11.15 am on Saturday April 21st as a rather scrambly affair as both teams were intent on being first on the scoreboard.

LGP was the first to have that pleasure with a goal from Karl Fleay. The game settled down with both teams playing good football and LGP had 3 goals on the board before Jerry got a major through Jackson Brown.

Quarter time saw the scoreboard with LGP in front with 5-3 and Jerry at 2-1.

When the second quarter commenced Jerramungup booted the first three goals until the Marshall boys, manning the half back flanks and Kelvin Holmes in the centre organising the troops stemmed the tide and the game settled down to a tight affair. Goals from Fergus Downey and Brayden Reynolds late in the game gave the Bombers a lead of 14 points. Half time scores were LGP 7-4 leading Jerry 5-2.

The 3rd quarter saw Brayden goaling first for LGP and then following up with another three along with three from other Bombers during the quarter. Jerramungup only scored two goals during the term. Homers' influence in organising the centre zone had a big impact.

Scores at three quarter time were about LGP 14-6 Jerry 8-3.

The last quarter commenced with some room on the scoreboard to be creative, it was good to see the older players deliberately including the younger guys in the action with Cent (could not wipe the smile off his face) Amores, Shaye Bowron and Fraser Hunt booting a goal each along with Jon Callope, Brayden and Karl Fleay adding to the score to give a final score of LGP 20 goals 9 (129) Jerramungup 10-3 (63) Jerry kicking just two for the quarter. A good and entertaining game of footy with the mixture of youth and wise old heads. Well done.

Awards: Best on ground for the Bombers was The Old Veteran Darren Clifford, BOG Runner up Peter Roukens and coaches award shared between Cent Amores and Jack Trevenen. Top goal scorer was Brayden Reynolds with 8 goals.

League match Lake Grace Pingrup vs Jerramungup The much heralded clash with the league leaders, Jerramungup had arrived and with LGP having players return to the fold in Dennis Gittos, Daniel Trevenen, Tyson Prater and Justin Carruthers, there was anticipation about how the Bombers would match up with Jerry.

The first quarter commenced under the captaincy of Luke Bairstow with Jerry having early control but only kicking three points for their effort. The first goal of the game was a LGP goal from Benn Tomkins. Gittos was doing a great job in organising the back line making it difficult for Jerry to organise their setup. Jerry then goaled through Hislop followed by a goal from Gittos from a set shot in front of goal. Bill Parker (110 goals last year for Jerry) finally opened his account. The first quarter was a tight contest and at quarter time the scores were LGP 2-1 (13) to Jerramungup 4-5 (29).

The second quarter saw the Bombers peg Jerry back a bit but big Jaiden Brooks was winning the ruck knocks making it difficult for the Bombers to take control of the ball. But LGP kicked the first two goals to get within five points of their opponents but then Brent Bailey kicked straight to widen the margin. The Bombers booted the next three and just prior to half time LGP was in a good position but Brooks booted a goal on the siren to give Jerry two goals for the quarter. LGP seemed to have their opponents' measure and the half time scoreboard read LGP 7-3 (45) Jerry 6-10 (46).

The third quarter started with the Bombers supporters optimistic about their chances of overhauling Jerramungup but after a goal to Clint Pocock followed by two more from Jerry and with LGP failing to score a major the match swung in Jerry's favour. Three quarter time scores LGP 7-6 (48) Jerry 10-12 (72).

The final term started with an early goal from Parker of Jerramungup followed by the Bombers only goal of the quarter. Jerry then took control of the match and followed through with four more giving them an easy win by 49 points. The Bombers seemed to lose their game plan during the last half, perhaps some players not having played together last year and Jerramungup were impressive to the end with Brooks dominating the ruck and around the ground. Bill Parker moving well in the forward line setting up goals and the Jerramungup team always having options both in attack and defence. A lesson to be learnt if the Bombers aspire to winning a flag later in the year.

Final scores Jerramungup 15-18 (108) LGP 8-11 (59).

Award winners for LGP: Best on Ground Marcus Trevenen, BOG runner up Luke Bairstow and Coaches award Justin Carruthers.

Round 1 – V’s Jerramungup – April 21st Taking a good part of the game for our team to get warmed up; fortunately it took a goal from Jerry to do just that. We became alive and quickly evened the score. Well done Mitchell! Shortly after scoring Mitchell along with some great team work almost scored a second. All in all a pretty good effort for our first game of the season, it was a big learning curve for our new players. Welcome to Kyle Harradine, Brock Argent and Katie O’Neill. Although Katie has filled in for us before it’s great now to have her on the team full time. These three new players are showing early promise.

Awards: Best on Ground – Imogen Taylor – Solid in defence and clearing the ball out Top Effort – Anna Hunt – Great confidence with getting her stick on the ball

Narrogin Supa Clinic On Saturday 14th April eight team members and three teens along with four mums travelled to Narrogin to attend their Supa Camp. The clinic involved coaching from 2 Hockeyroo players; Bianca Greenshields (HB) and Rachel Lynch (Goalie). There were also two “sissy” Yoga sessions – just ask the boys which sessions cause the most pain!! We stayed the night at Beryl Watson’s B & B “Bushalla”.

It was a terrific start to the season;

the kids all had a great time and came home all enthused for hockey, (results showing already in Saturday’s game)

Thank you to the parents for their support in backing this camp, also the Lake Grace Pingrup Hockey team for their support and to Beryl for accommodating us all. It was a very worthwhile event for the club.

Lake Grace / Pingrup Netball Notes – Sat 21st

April

Lake Grace / Pingrup hosted Jerramungup for the Season 2012 opener.

B Grade B Grade this year is a very young side with a lot of potential. Unfortunately this meant that they were missing 3 players on Saturday, due to them being chosen in the Regional Development squad.

The girls however played really well together as a team for the entire 4 quarters and beat Jerry by 8 goals.

Best Player: Kathleen Naisbitt Coaches Awards: Bianca Kennedy

A Grade A Grade kicked the season off with a re-match of last year’s Grand Final straight up. It was a different team to the one who lost to Jerry in Nyabing with several new players taking the court but the whole team rose to the challenge. It was a hard fought game with both teams having their share of the lead.

In the end Lake Grace / Pingrup narrowly went down to Jerry 35 -37. Thanks to Chloe Bairstow, Mel Naisbitt & Carrie Taylor for filling in and we look forward to having Lauren Duckworth & Kristie Stanton back next week. Best Player: Shannon Morton for taking on the GK position and defending well. Coaches Award: Chloe Bairstow for the strength that she brought to the Team, right across the court Juniors Lake Grace / Pingrup had a big win: 24 – 5. Good start to the season and great to see the girls having fun & enjoying their netball. Latisha McGlinn & Kaitlyn O’Neill both played their 1

st

game of Junior Netball, well done girls.

Coaches Award: Anna Hunt for good 4 Quarter effort Good luck to all 3 teams for next week when we travel to Borden.

Lake Grace Hockey Club Notes The first game of the season saw Lake Grace face Kukerin at home. Kukerin have not entered a B grade side into the competition this year so only C and A grade played.

The kids put in a good effort for their first game with some excellent work through the centre of the field by Fletcher Taylor and Tayah Medlen among others, but unfortunately Kukerin came out on top.

A Grade was a good game with both teams putting in 100%. Lake Grace scored the first goal and had a couple more opportunities through short corners to no avail. Kukerin responded and scores were equal at one all by half time. A couple more good opportunities for Kukerin saw them slot two more goals away and finish on top. This time.

Thank you to our weekly sponsors, Lake Grace

Sportsman’s Club, Sab’s Fish & Chips, Narelle Duckworth and Walkers Hill Vineyard. Your support is very much appreciated. BIG THANK YOU also to the C Grade mums who helped out organizing afternoon tea this week.

We have our Mother’s Day Raffle on at the moment, tickets are available through Lake Grace Health & Beauty. First and second prizes, could get you out of trouble with your mum.

Lake Grace was well represented recently at the U17 State Championships in Perth. Phoebe & Chloe Robertson, Jordy & Shaylah Medlen, Jade Cameron, Maddy Walker, Elizabeth Spencer and Beth Curtin attended and played in the Roe Districts team. The girls finished ninth overall in B Grade with a 3-1 win sealing the deal. Thanks to John Curtin for undertaking some of our umpiring duties and to the parents for allowing the girls to attend.

This Saturday we play Narembeen in Narembeen. A, B and C Grades. Following week, 5th May is versus Bruce Rock at home. All grades.

Regards, Danielle Robertson

It was a great opening day of golf with 33 players coming along to enjoy some good company in good weather on not quite green fairways. Nice to see some new faces turn up to enjoy the afternoon.

Well done to Kevin Eggers, who in his Vice President role had to do the opening tee shot as President Chad was away on other business. With everyone watching it was a great relief to Kevin as his driver made contact with the ball and the ball went a considerable distance down the edge of the fairway. Not bad considering no summer golf, no practise and not even stretching exercises had been on Kevin’s agenda.

The competition was a 3 person ambrose, sponsored by Fyfe Transport. Thank you to David and Christine for their continued support of the Golf Club. Winners for the day, with an incredible nett score of 52 1/6, having a 68 off the stick (which included 6 birdies and a couple of bogies) were Sam Stubberfield, Cameron Slarke and Derek Stanton.

Runners-up on a respectable nett score of 57 1/3 were the 3 M’s, Martin Harrop, Brett McKenney and Marcus Owen.

Warmer than average weather saw participants of Lake Grace Riding school a few shades browner despite liberal coatings of sunscreen.

Lake Grace Pony Club hosted riders from Narrogin, Ravensthorpe, Newdegate, Pingelly, Mandurah, Perth, Albany and Kojonup, in an intense week of equine learning.

Club rooms and facilities sparkled with the concentrated efforts of powerful cleaners (high strength liquid applied by dedicated volunteers). All was in readiness for Easter Sunday and the arrival of more than 40 horses, riders and their support crew.

Horses were settled into yards and caravans, campers, trucks and floats turned into temporary homes. Just before dark, willing volunteers turned their attention to jump course building and were rewarded with a sausage sizzle for their efforts.

Monday’s arrival was a welcome relief for folks who don’t sleep well the first night away from home. We began as usual with a Monday morning meeting to establish the rules, preview entertainment and introduce our instructors. Inspired and ready to ride, riders raced off to saddle up for the first lesson. As always Monday morning can cause parents to grip their seats as fresh ponies cooped up all night can show uncontrolled and exuberant behaviour. This year everyone kept their seat, giving our ever ready Medical Officers Anna Taylor and Kate Furphy nothing to do.

On Tuesday horses showed none of the exuberant properties of the previous day and settled into work easily. Instructors kept things moving and like sponges our riders soaked up information. That night Anna Taylor entertained us with a quiz; riders tested their knowledge and had lots of fun.

Wednesday saw jumps go up to dizzy heights entertaining support crews. Our well attended steak night run by Joe and Diedre Trevenen was a sumptuous feast, exactly what hungry riders need. With instructors

and volunteers thanked in a speech that didn’t go on too long we celebrated the 11

th birthday of Kojonup rider

Kate Trezise. Kate shared a magnificent cake before Joe Trevenen brought out his guitar and treated us to some country music.

Thursday came around quickly, the warm weather and hard work teamed with a huge learning curve was starting to take its toll on energy levels. Our younger riders finished their Lake Grace Riding School experience with a mini gymkhana, smiles and a ribbon . Other groups went out on a trail ride in the afternoon. The end of lessons signalled the start of gymkhana set up which was completed as the sun set.

Friday’s gymkhana is about thundering hooves, ribbons, smiling faces and trophies. Then tired riders load trusty ponies up into floats and are both taken home for a well-earned rest.

Again this year we added the Parelli Natural Horsemanship component to our school. Two star Esperance Instructor Shana Walters gave a wonderful display of finesse, riding a dressage test on her horse Yogi that wowed the crowd. Parelli students were in the saddle and playing with horses all day every day, Shana pushed us hard and was thoroughly impressed with the way students stepped up.

Thanks to Coaches Alana Chircop, Capel; Christine Panting, Katanning; Judy Rose, Bindoon and Shana Walters, Esperance. Thanks to our wonderful volunteers Christine Fyfe, Kelly Gooch, Anna Taylor, Michelle Dunham, Glen Day, Joe and Diedre Trevenen. A big thanks to Kim and Michelle Slarke for the grounds and sourcing the hay; Danielle England for running canteen, and everyone who helped made the camp a great success.

Remember: Horses don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
