LAKE HAVENA family’s dream for a waterfront paradisecomes to fruition with remarkable results.

HOMESALLYCROXTON

This brilliant white house appears tofloat in its dazzling waterfront setting. The illusion is created by the design and

height of the elongated residence, one metreabove natural ground level, so the main open-plan living area gives the impression ofmerging into the shimmering waters of LakeMacquarie at the rear and flowing into the24-metre heated lap pool running alongsidethe two-storey structure.

Huge grey porcelain tiles are used in theroom with the same outside in non-slip form, adding to the inside/outside connectivity.

A house to drool over, it is sleek and modernand comes with a host of high-tech functionsand recreation options to pamper, entertainand relax its five-member family and theirguests.

As well as the light-flooded main livingspace, there is an intimate media room withleather recliners and thick purple velvetcurtains, a well-equipped gym, a C-bus systemwhich remote-controls functions fromoperating blinds to winching the water toys (ajet-ski and tinnie) from the bay into thedouble-length boat shed, a study with enough

workstations for all five members of thefamily, a big rumpus plus a four-car garageaccessed from two streets.

Completed in March, the residence built byBruce Keevers sits on an absolute waterfrontblock in the heart of Valentine, in a cornerposition which affords almost every roomnorth-east or north-west water views.

Owner Maxine Poole says she and herhusband were living in Eleebana when theybought the 60-metre long, 15-metre wideblock about three years ago. The land had a1950s cottage on it which was owned by

LAPPING IT UP: The pool along the side of the house adds to the floating feeling. The north-west outlook provides plenty of light and warmth. PICTURES: RYAN OSLAND

Forget the 1970s padded vinyl drinks bars. Here the curved wet bar overlooking the pool is sleek and integrated into the main living area.

retired David Jones regional manager FrankBaxter and his wife Joyce and before that byactor Pat McDonald (who played Dorrie Evansin the television series Number 96).

But like many older homes, the house failedto take full advantage of the views, a featurethe current owners were determined tomaximise in any design.

Maxine says: ‘‘We knew what we wanted, but we didn’t know where to start. Wewanted to make the house flow on to thewater.’’

They approached a couple of architects butsoon decided on Mark Lawler of Mark LawlerArchitects, told him the accommodation theywere after and then left the design andfinishes to him and his team.

‘‘Everything you see around you is prettymuch his from the door handles on,’’ Maxinesays, although she takes credit for the choiceof modern furnishings. They complementLawler’s design, which has been nominatedfor a Landcom 2009 Lower Hunter UrbanDesign Award.

As well as the sleek elegance of the renderedbrick and Colorbond house with its outsidesteel structure supporting aluminium screensand panels and the home’s neutral palette ofwhites and taupes through to charcoal greys, there are a host of practical features thatMaxine loves.

These include the automated vacuumsystem, especially the dust outlet in thekitchen with its CaesarStone benchtops andglass splashbacks, and underfloor heating tothe tiled living room, which, coupled withinsulated double layer glass and a designthat floods the room with winter sun, hasmade their other heating optionsredundant.

She also finds handy the laundry chute whichspeeds the linen down from the bedroomfloor to the laundry, the extent of storagespace and the choice of five bathrooms/showers, one outside to sluice off salt waterbefore entering the main house.

Because the views are superb from bothlevels, for practicality main living areas arearranged on the ground floor. A huge rumpusand the five bedrooms, two with their own

waterside decks, are on the top level up theopen-tread blackbutt timber stairs, which area feature of the entry.

The main living area opening to rear andside decks is large but not so cavernous as tolose the homey feel, important for the familywith three children aged from 15 to 21.

Maxine says the wall to the side street andthe home’s angled louvred screens serve togive the family privacy and are angled to cutsummer glare. ‘‘You can still see the lake butno one can see in,’’ she says.

Lawler says the house is large so his designaimed to break up the form so it looks morethan just one giant lump. To this end the entryis obvious from the street and the house andgaraging are in separate but connectedbuildings with roofs sloped in differentdirections.

Now they have settled in Maxine says she isreluctant to leave to go on holiday: all shewants is at home.

‘‘We just wanted to have a family house,’’she says.
