R ain did not deter the thousands of supporters who turned out at Speers Point on Sunday night to celebrate the start of the Lake Macquarie Interna-

tional Children’s Games. The wild weather caused some disruptions to

the opening ceremony, including the shifting forward of the scheduled 9:30pm fireworks, but Lake Macquarie Mayor Jodie Harrison said she was pleased to see so many residents welcoming young athletes from across the globe to the city.

“The ceremony opened with the parade of athletes, which was an incredible sight to see,” she said.

“Athletes from around the world show their excitement and passion for the Games as they marched in their team uniforms.”

14-year-old singer-songwriter, and winner of the International Children’s Games theme song competition, Mia Sifflet was the stand-out perfor-mance of the night as she belted out her song Never Give Up as heavy rain pelted the stage.

Christine Anu performed her hit, My Island Home, before surprise guests, ARIA award winners, Sheppard, closed out the night with their inescapable 2014 anthem, Geronimo.

The International Children’s Games are the larg-est multi-sport youth games in the world and a recognised member of the International Olympic Committee.

Sensible devlopment on the rail corridor can workThere was no real surprise in last week’s confirmation from NSW Premier, Mike Baird that land on the Newcastle rail corridor will be made available for development.

As I wrote in a previous column, I don’t feel that we need the whole corridor to be set aside for open public parks and cycleways.

While it would certainly look very pleasant, there is currently plenty of room to stretch your legs along the foreshore area without feeling too cramped with crowds.

In saying that, a line of multi-level apartment blocks or offices stretching for several kilome-tres would be a terrible outcome.

The best part of the announcement was that all developments on this land will have to be approved by Newcastle Council before they can proceed.

That should go part of the way to easing the fears of sections of the community that feel like this whole process has been decided upon in Sydney without much local input.

At least this will allow the Councillors, who have a feel for what the residents want and need, to put a stop to or alter any development that is not suitable.

It sounds like there will be more fun and games played out in the media before then with the Greens announcing they will oppose the selling of the rail corridor land.

The outpouring of grief surrounding the death of Phillip Hughes has been truly remarkable.

But after hearing all the stories about what a quality human being he was, you can under-stand why people all around the world went to great lengths to pay their respects.

I think the nation’s opinion of Australian captain, Michael Clarke has risen considerably in the past fortnight.

When a close friend dies suddenly, the last thing you would feel like doing would be stand-ing in front of a wave of cameras and micro-phones and reading out statements every day.

We all saw the footage of Clarke arriving at the hospital to be with his mate and staying there almost 24 hours a day, handling all of the media requests.

Clarke has always been a fairly divisive char-acter in the public’s eyes.

The drama surrounding his former relation-ship with Lara Bingle didn’t do his public image any favours.

As a cricket fan, I had my doubts when he took over as captain as to whether he was tough enough and mature enough to handle the job.

But he’s won me over with his tactical nous and the almost aggressive way he chases victory.

He’s also won over a lot of people with how he stepped up to honour his friend and support his family in their greatest time of need.

A n independent panel of plan-ners and architects has deemed the three high-rise residential towers planned to top the GPT/

UrbanGrowth NSW Hunter Street develop-ment too tall.

Addressing a meeting of Newcastle City Council last week, Dr Philip Pollard, a member of Council’s Urban Design Consultative Group, labelled the towers “excessive”, adding that the “highly intru-sive” height and scale of the development would likely impact on the city’s heritage and character.

Dramatic changes to maximum build-ing heights in the East End announced in March sparked a backlash from residents who claimed they weren’t given enough time to comment on the amendments before they were given the go-head by the State Government.

While Planning Minister, Pru Goward eventually conceded to reduce the maximum height of the development by 10 metres, so as to not exceed the height of the Christ Church Cathedral parapet, Dr Pollard maintained that the level of community consultation about the changes had been “inadequate”.

Councillor Tim Crakanthorp said he had requested a copy of the consultative group’s report on the proposed changes to the height limits in July but was told by Council’s general manger, Ken Gouldthorp that it was being kept confidential at the request of the proponents, GPT and UrbanGrowth NSW.

When questioned by Cr Crakanthorp about his authority to withhold the report from the democratically elected Council, Mr Gouldthorp said he would respond to the query at a later date.

Speaking of the GPT/UrbanGrowth NSW development, Dr Pollard said no amount of finessing of the design could overcome

the current height and bulk issues unani-mously identified by the panel.

“The only architects I know that are supportive of this proposal are those who prepared it,” he said.

He added that such dense development in the East End had the potential to “soak up demand” in other parts of the city.

H unter pensioners are avoiding using their air conditioners on hot days due to the cost of elec-tricity, NSW Opposition Leader,

John Robertson has said.Mr Robertson and Labor candidate for

Maitland, Jenny Aitchison met with East Maitland’s Hilda Walker, Max Ray and Ray Fairweather last week to discuss the Baird Government’s plan to sell 49 per cent of the state’s electricity network.

Mr Ray said that he had already seen the cost of his power bill skyrocket and feared it could go higher.

“My cost, in my estimation, has increased 50 per cent in the last 10 years,” he said.

Ms Aitchison said it wasn’t a case of using more power, but an increase in the cost of living.

“These people are on fixed budgets,” she said.

“Facing a long, hot summer, when you’re 80, is really a concern.”

Mr Robertson blasted the Government for its plan during a visit to Thornton, saying that in addition to price rises, the sale would leave a hole in the budget.

“That’s money that comes into the state every year from these assets and goes towards paying teachers and nurses - if those assets are sold that disappears,” he said.

C ardiff Fire Station has been given a major facelift.

The $2.4 million upgrade, ready just in time for the summer

bushfire season, means the station now has enough room for two fire engines, plus modern offices, kitchens, training and storage rooms and a gym.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Stuart Ayres said the work was the first major renovation to the station since it opened in 1971.

“Cardiff Fire Station was originally built in 1971, but with the expanded staffing requirements and new fire trucks, a major upgrade was required to bring the fire station up to the modern standards and meet the growing needs of the Lake Macquarie area.”

Mr Ayres said the improved facilities would allow firefighters to protect the local community from fires, accidents,

chemical spills and other emergencies. Fire & Rescue NSW Commissioner Greg

Mullins said the renovations at Cardiff were a drastic improvement on the old premises.

“With the delivery of a new fire truck earlier this year, that station is now well-equipped to service the local community well into the future.”

The upgrade of Cardiff Fire Station coin-cided with the opening of a new state-of-the-art station at Salamander Bay in Port Stephens, a replacement for the old Nelson Bay facility.

“Firefighters at both Salamander Bay and Cardiff fire stations play a vital role in the local community, responding to up to 1,000 fire and emergency incidents every year,” Commissioner Mullins said.

“Firefighters also undertake regular community safety education and engage-ment activities each year and the new and upgraded facilities will ensure that they can continue this vital work well into the future.”

H e is the spritely 84-year-old who has been recognised as the top volunteer in his community.

Albert “Alby” Roberts has been a staple of the Teralba Amateur Sailing Club since it was established in 1947.

As a past president and life member of the club, Mr Roberts helped build the original clubhouse and continues to assist the club in its regular activities.

Every Saturday morning during the sailing season, from September through to Easter, Mr Roberts opens the club and prepares the rescue boats. He buys the fuel, oversees the maintenance of the boats and takes care of the boat shed.

Up until two seasons ago, he was out on the water setting courses and manning rescue boats, but recent bouts of ill-health have kept him on dry land.

The sailing club has even named a training boat in honour of Mr Roberts.

Last week, on the eve of International Volunteer Day, Mr Roberts’ tireless work was rewarded when he took home the Long Term Commitment to Volunteering and Overall Volunteer of the Year awards at the Charlton Volunteer Awards.

Mr Roberts was nominated by members of the Teralba Amateur Sailing Club.

Linda O’Connor, a member of the club for 15 years, said Mr Roberts was “a treasure”.

“A lot of out members are busy with work so the club really couldn’t do with-out him,” she said. “He’s just a gem of a person.”

NBN update

Work on the final stage of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass took a step forward last week with the contract for the concept design and environmental assessment being awarded to Aurecon Australia.

The $280 million 3.4-kilometre road link, to be primarily funded through proceeds from the lease of the Port of Newcastle, will connect the existing Shortland to Jesmond in the north to the Rankin Park to Kotara bypass in the south.

The bypass will be built to the west of John Hunter Hospital and a rear entrance to the facility is being considered as part of the project.

Construction is expected to start in 2017, pending planning approval.

Six suburbs across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie will be included in the next phase of the rollout of the National Broad-band Network (NBN).

Construction of fixed line broadband technology will begin in Belmont, Boola-roo, Charlestown, Hamilton, Mayfield, New Lambton from this month, with an additional 1.9 million Australian house-holds and businesses expected to be able to connect to the network by June 2016.

Maitland was also included in the latest rollout plan.

CEO of NBN Co, the firm responsible for the rollout, Bill Morrow said construction was taking place as quickly as possible.

“We’re committed to bringing fast broadband to all Australians as quickly as possible,” he said.

I t has been dubbed a “house of hope” for the Hunter community and will provide invaluable support to the thousands at risk of suicide across

the region every year. Last week, Lifeline celebrated the

opening of its brand new purpose-built regional headquarters at Islington.

The new site, built on land previously owned by Railcorp on Maitland Road, will act as a regional hub for more than 60 staff and 400 volunteers and Lifeline’s face-to-face counselling services

The facility also houses a state-of-the-art training centre funded through a $55,000 grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation.

Lifeline Newcastle and Hunter CEO, Kay Chapman said the new site would help boost the service’s visibility in the community.

“For the first time since Lifeline was established in Newcastle in 1966, our operation has its own purpose-built premises,” she said.

Ms Chapman said even though Lifeline had moved into a new venue, it was still in desperate need of community support.

“Many may view the building as a sign

of prosperity and assume that we no longer need local support,” she said.

“Nothing could be further from the truth.

“Our operations funding and building funds are two very separate funding pools and ne’er the twain shall meet.

“Lifeline Newcastle and Hunter is 81 per cent self-funded and the downturn and demise of Hunter industries this year has

a substantial impact on our funding and ability to offer services.”

Opening the new building last Thurs-day, NSW Premier Mike Baird praised the work of Lifeline volunteers and staff, call-ing them a “collective group of heroes”.

“This is not a hospital but you are defi-nitely saving lives,” he said.

I could not be more proud of the community of Lake Macquarie for embracing our national and international visitors who came to experience the 2014 Lake Macquarie International Children’s Games.

It was unfortunate that the weather didn’t play its part on Sunday night and we had to shorten our Opening Ceremony but this change didn’t dampen the spirit of our athletes, coaches, supporters or the community, who truly stood by this historic event.

The significance of the Games was acknowledged by the attendance of Guests of Honour, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of New South Wales and his wife Mrs Linda Hurley.

The passion and enthusiasm on the competitors’ faces as they competed in their respective sports was inspiring as we saw them strive and achieve their goals.

Presenting the first medal of the Games was a highlight in my time as Mayor of Lake Macquarie and I am appreciative that I had this opportunity.

As the Games draw to an end, it is wonderful to take stock of the achievements made for our City, the Hunter Region and the state of NSW by hosting this prestigious International event. The lifelong friendships that have formed between our young athletes, supporters coaches and our volunteers are priceless, and I am sure they will all cherish these bonds for many years to come.

The ideals of the Games to promote cultural acceptance and understanding were truly established by all involved.

I would like to thank the 600 volunteers who gave up their time over this past week to help Council deliver the world’s second largest International Children’s Games and ensure it was a successful event. We couldn’t have done it without you.

F our students from Swansea High School will soon embark on the trip of a lifetime.

Ruby Rizk, Cody Henderson, Emma Boertje and Jayde Robertson will join 100 high school students from across the state in representing NSW at the Centenary of ANZAC Dawn Service at Gallipoli in April next year.

The group was selected over 16 of their peers by a local panel, which included principal Robyn Leggatt, Swansea MP Garry Edwards, and Swansea RSL sub-branch secretary, Barney Blundell.

As part of their application, students were required to submit a written or visual piece inspired by the Centenary of ANZAC.

Cody and Jayde both submitted essays on the ANZAC legacy, while Emma wrote a

moving short story about the experiences of a young Digger serving on the front line, which brought the panel to tears.

Ruby painted a striking portrait of a solider, which will be hung, along with two other artworks submitted by Swansea High School students, at Swansea RSL Club.

Ruby and Emma both described the trip as a “once in a lifetime opportunity”.

Jayde said she was looking forward to sharing her experiences with others on return to Australia.

Cody said with family members currently serving in the Defence Force, he would relish the opportunity to stand where so many fought and died for the freedoms Australians today enjoy.

Swansea High School teacher Bruce Eyre, who will supervise the students on the nine-day tour, also had a family connection to the ANZACs.

His grandfather served as a light horse-man at Gallipoli from the age of just 15.

“He had a note signed off from his mum and dad, his application was accepted and off he went,” he told the Post.

“Spending his formative years at war had a profound effect on him.

“He was lucky enough to have come back intact physically at the age of 19, but there was a lot of emotional damage done.”

Mr Eyre said he never met his grandfa-ther but he expected to feel the presence of family when standing on the shores of ANZAC Cove.

Swansea High School was selected to attend the Centenary commemorations through a ballot process, which was drawn in September.

Mr Eyre and the students will depart on April 19. lo

L ake Macquarie City Council has taken out the top gong at the Local Government Excellence in the Environment Awards.

Council was recognised for its commit-ment to embedding sustainable practices in its work and significantly reducing Lake Macquarie’s ecological footprint.

“Lake Macquarie’s Sustainability is Core Business initiative has enabled us to reduce our overall ecological foot-print, including a 3.3 per cent reduction in residential electricity usage and a 2674-tonne-a-year decline in Council’s greenhouse gas emissions, and prevented 150 kilograms of waste per capita going to landfill,” Council’s sustainability manager, Alice Howe said.

Council also received the award for Natural Environment Policies, Planning and Decision Making, as well as an Organics Recovery Award, for the intro-duction of its green waste service.

Local Government NSW president, Keith Rhoades commended Council on its community-wide approach to sustainability. “Effectively engaging and educating the community has been key to Lake Macquarie City Council’s success, having reached over 13,000 households with their sustainability engagement programs.”

Crash Investigation Officers are appealing for information to help locate a man wanted on an arrest warrant.

Joshua Uicich, 27, is wanted on an outstanding warrant in relation to a serious collision on Tuesday 3 June 2014, at Cams Wharf in the Lake Macquarie area, where he failed to stop.

Officers have conducted extensive searches to locate the man, but he has not been located.

They are now appealing for information from the public in an attempt to locate him.

Uicich is described as being of Cauca-sian appearance, 170-175cm tall, thin build, and with brown hair.

It is understood he may have a beard or moustache.

If members of the public see Joshua Uicich, they are urged not to approach him but to contact Triple Zero (000) immediately.

The incident happened about 3.30pm on Tuesday, December 2, when the 15-year-old girls were walking along Dumaresq Street, Hamilton, and saw a man performing an indecent act outside a block of home units.

The girls fled when the man began walking towards them.

Another person witnessed the incident and called police.

Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command searched the area without success, and they are now appealing for anyone with information about the man to contact them.

They have issued a description of man they believe can assist with their inquiries.

He is described as being about 45 years old, of Caucasian appearance, about 173cm tall with a solid build and a ‘pot’ belly.

The man was said to have short brown

hair and was unshaven with stubble; at time he was topless and wearing blue trousers. Anyone with information about this person or about the incident is urged to contact Newcastle Police or Crime Stoppers. blue trousers.

Charge follows arrest for explosive devices

A man has been charged after an improvised explosive device was alleg-edly found in a bin at Shoal Bay, near Port Stephens, earlier in the year.

About 3:40am, Monday 29 September 2014, police attached to Port Stephens Local Area Command were patrolling the area when they saw a small fire in a car park on Government Road.

The officers went to investigate and allegedly located an improvised explo-sive device in a garbage bin.

Police extinguished the fire while the explosive device was examined and declared safe.

The bin and the device underwent forensic testing which led investigators to speak with a 35-year-old man.

About 10:50am last Thursday, the man attended Nelson Bay Police Station where he was spoken to by investigators and arrested.

He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station where he was charged with possess, supply or make explosive for unlawful purpose and granted condi-tional bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 5 January 2015.

F ive new pedestrian crossings will open up across the rail corridor in Newcastle’s CBD by early next year.

Visiting the city last week Transport Minister and Minister for the Hunter, Gladys Berejiklian said the crossings, to be located at Steele Street, Kuwumi Place, Worth Place, Perkins Street and Wolfe Street, would assist in the State Government’s plan to open up the CBD.

“These are just the first few connec-tions between the city and foreshore that will be possible when the rail line is truncated on Boxing Day,” she said.

“These five new pedestrian-friendly crossings, together with the opening of the Stewart Avenue and Merewether Street level crossings, will help kick-start the revitalization of this great city and get people moving more easily between Hunter Street and the fore-shore while the detailed planning work for urban renewal is completed.”

Ms Berejiklian said more crossings would be announced next year, including more vehicle crossings to cut congestion.

Pedestrian rail crossings featured prominently in the Opposition’s revi-talisation plan for Newcastle, released ahead of the October by-election. Under Labor’s plan the heavy rail line would be retained and beautified and six pedestrian rail crossings constructed between Steel St and Wolfe St.

K otara’s Amanda Butler has been recognised by Fitness First’s New You Achievement Awards

for her life-changing achievement of losing more than 40 kilograms over the past nine months.

Ms Butler said constant pain in her joints and difficultly in completing basic tasks such as tying shoelaces had provided the inspiration for the transfor-mation that has seen her drop from a size 26 dress size down to 12.

“I also had trouble breathing when I slept and I couldn’t run around and play with my two young boys,” she said.

“I didn’t want them growing up being teased for having an overweight mum.

“I wanted to be a role model for my children to show them that whatever you put your mind to, you can achieve.”

“My two little boys would yell at me on the treadmill to ‘go faster, Mummy’ and stop me if I was trying to sneak a chocolate.

Ms Butler said the support of trainers Jason Cooper and Nathan Gillius from Fitness First at Kotara had been crucial in her success.

“Having people around you that have the knowledge and know-how to make you achieve your goals is what I sought

out at the beginning,” she said. “I was petrified to walk into the gym. I couldn’t fit into cool gym gear, I had no idea what to do.

Inspired by her progress, Ms Butler has begun studying for a Certificate III and IV in Fitness and hopes to support others on their journeys.

“I would never have thought of even joining a gym let alone working in one, but I want to keep training myself to see how far I can go and inspire and motivate people to do it with the right support and encouragement behind them.”

Dinosaurs have been extinct for millions of years, but they’re alive at the Austral-ian Reptile Park these summer holidays.

The mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Spinosaurus will meet and greet visitors from Boxing Day, right through to the end of the Australia Day long weekend. The T-Rex is probably the most popular dinosaur of all and was found in North America over 66 million years ago.

The Spinosaurus is bigger, and thought to be the largest carnivorous dinosaur.

This giant was found in North Africa around 110 million years ago. There will be photo opportunities for kids throughout the day with these enormous beasts.

Our most famous living dinosaur, Elvis the saltwater crocodile, will thrill crowds when he leaps for his lunch at 1.30pm every day of the holidays.

Nuts - are they healthy or fatty? Well, the answer is both! Nuts are a very healthy food. They are full of lots of

healthy nutrients including dietary fibre, several B vitamins and vitamin E, minerals such as iron, zinc, potassium and magnesium, antioxidant minerals (selenium, manganese and copper), plus other antioxidant compounds (such as flavonoids).

Nuts are also quite high in fat. There are two main groups of fats - saturated fats and

unsaturated fats. Saturated fats have been found to increase blood choles-

terol level and can therefore increase your risk of heart disease.

Unsaturated fats however, have been found to be good for your heart, as they can help to keep your cholesterol good or in some cases even lower it.

Nuts are high in unsaturated fats, so can be very healthy additions to your diet.

All fat, whether it is saturated or unsaturated, can increase your weight.

So, although nuts are a healthy snack, include small portions (approx. ¼ cup) each day only.

When you’re choosing nuts, the best options are the raw and unsalted varieties.

Peanut butter is a form of nuts, however choose the natural variety that does not have any added sugar, fat or salt.

An even better option, is the nut spreads that are available in the health food section of the supermarket.

They are based on healthier types of nuts like cashew, almonds and brazil nuts, and don’t have any sugar or salt added like most peanut betters do.

Well summer is finally here! The warmer weather and the longer days give us more opportunity to be active, but we also need to be aware of the consequences of heat exhaustion, especially on days of extreme heat, which seem to be happening more often these days.

The very young and the elderly are most at risk of heat stress, but anyone can succumb to the effects, especially if they exercise strenuously during the hot and humid weather.

Becoming dehydrated, getting sunburnt and drinking alcohol effect your body’s ability to cool itself down.

The symptoms of heat stress include thirst, reduced urination, and feeling dizzy, faint or weak. Some people sweat excessively, develop headaches or develop muscle cramps or nausea.

If you experience these symptoms you should contact your GP. It is also important to be aware that some medicines that you

can buy over the counter or are prescribed by your doctor can effect the way your body responds to heat.

Talk to your GP if you are taking medications for blood pres-sure, cardiac or mental health conditions, medicines for seizures, incontinence, pain and especially fluid (diuretic) medications.

How you store your medication is also important to think about because the heat can change the effectiveness of some medica-tions. If you have a good pharmacist they would be able to give you some storage advice. If you are on fluid tablets or have a fluid restriction advised by your doctor it can be a good idea to talk to them about a plan on how to manage the hot weather.

One of the best ways to avoid heat stress is to keep your fluids up. Water is best. This is important, especially for the elderly whose sense of thirst lessens as they age. Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol as they can make you urinate more and lose fluid.

If it is hard to keep your home cool consider going to a cool place like your local shopping centre, library or cinema.

Thirdly, keep yourself cool. Wear loose clothing, use wet towels to wipe your face and neck, avoid the heat of the middle of the day and exercise in the cool of the morning or the evening.

Enjoy summer, but stay safe from heat stress.

Shingles is an infection caused by the chickenpox virus (herpes zoster). Shingles can only develop in a person who has already had chickenpox. After an episode of chicken pox, the zoster virus lies dormant in nerve cells near the spinal cord. The dormant virus causes no harm or symptoms, but can reactivate later and cause shingles.

The majority of the Australian population is at risk of developing shingles, as over 95 per cent of adults over 30 are exposed to the chicken pox virus.

150, 000 Australians suffer an attack of shingles each year. It is estimated that by the age of 85 one in every two Australians will develop shingles.

Shingles may occur at any age, but is more common in people over the age of 50. Fortunately most people have shingles only once. Shingles affects nerve fibres, causing a painful, blistering skin rash in the area of the affected nerves. Shingles often starts with a burning, tingling, itching or sensitive feeling on an area of skin. A painful red rash with fluid-filled blisters appears a few days later. The blisters slowly dry up and heal.

Treatment for shingles includes anti-viral medicines, pain-relieving medicines and soothing creams, gels and dressings. Anti-viral medicines stop the virus growing. Early treatment with anti-viral medicines can speed healing, as well as reduce pain.

Lenient action on pollution

Recent investigations into the legacy of toxic waste and heavy metals from the Pasminco Lead Smelter in Boolaroo are deeply concerning.

Newcastle is an area that has grown from industry. Industries like Pasminco brought jobs and prosperity to the region, but the harmful legacy of this industry is not one the community should be forced to bare.

For too long governments have been willing to let polluting companies off lightly and let residents face the consequences.

Australia’s industrial history features a number of companies that made large profits from their prod-ucts, but were not willing to accept responsibility for the damage their product caused.

The James Hardie asbestos case is perhaps the most well known, but companies such as Pasminco and others have been allowed to profit from the damage they caused and leave residents to face the uncertainty of whether they can live safely in their own homes.

This is not just a historical issue. This year the NSW Environment Protection Author-

ity fined mining company Santos a pathetic $1500 for allowing uranium from a CSG project to enter a nearby aquifer.

For a billion dollar company like Santos a fine like this would be paid from petty cash.

Until governments force companies to leave an area in a comparable state to how they found it then companies will continue to avoid cleaning up their mess, and let taxpayers fund the eventual costly cleanup.

You may remember a tragic incident in late 2008 where local boy Ben Parkinson, sustained a terrible brain injury when he fell from the roof of the old Newcastle Post Office building. Ben was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury and requires full-time care for the rest of his life.

Six years later and Ben has only just received a small amount of compensation through the early release of his superannuation. Although the law allows for early access to superannuation in cases where someone is permanently incapacitated, by no means was this straightforward!

Ben’s parents Cheryl and Gary, on top of the fight for their sons survival, caring for him full-time, campaign-ing awareness about Traumatic Brain injury and fund raising, have had to go head to head with Ben’s super fund in a painstakingly unsuccessful attempt to receive an early release on his super money.

After over five years’ of attempting to get the super fund to release Ben’s money, Cheryl was referred to us to get assistance. Five months of persevering and applying technical knowledge, financial skills and determination in coordinating the complex paper work and chasing up of Ben’s doctors, we were finally able to get Ben his superannuation payout last month.

This really highlights that an accident can happen at any time and how important it is to have proper insur-ance cover and the right financial advice and support during claim times. The Raymond Terrace “Jets” and East Cessnock “Comets” have advanced to the Grand Final of the BCIB Challenge with contrasting major semi-final victo-ries last weekend.

Minor Premiers Ettalong Memorial “Eagles” were defeated 10/5 by the Jets, losing the Pairs and Triples rubbers.

premiers Merewether at Townson Oval. Defending a mammoth total of 371,

As the Newcastle Jets continue to lose touch in the race for the finals, coach Phil Stubbins has again been left disappointed by his players’

mental attitude after the 3-1 loss to Welling-ton Phoenix at Hunter Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was the fifth occasion in nine games this season the Jets have held a lead but been unable to win. Newcastle held the lead into the final quarter of the match after Joel Grif-fiths scored in the 24th minute.

But three goals in five minutes saw the Phoenix depart with a comfortable victory.

“We can keep challenging the group and keep challenging them mentally but you know at some point you have to say are we mentally tough enough and then I have to challenge what we are trying to achieve tacti-cally,” Stubbins said.

“We are certainly good enough to go and get goals as it’s been proven but to get ourselves in a situation where we are questioning ourselves, do we have a fear?"

Stubbins also lamented the number of

times his team had managed to hit the post in attack this season, pointing to Griffiths and David Carney doing so against the Phoe-nix and preventing a more comfortable lead.

There were further injury concerns for the Jets with Billy Celeski straining his groin and leaving the field after only eight minutes.

The Jets head across the country to play the ladder leaders Perth Glory at nib Stadium at 9.45pm on Friday night.

The Jets’ W-League team’s season came to an end after a 2-2 draw with Sydney FC.

Newcastle needed to win the match to make the finals and looked on track to do son after goals to Rhali Dobson and Tara Andrews had them up 2-1 with 12 minutes remaining. However, a penalty to Sydney FC tied the match with the Jets unable to break the deadlock.

The Jets’ Youth League side were defeated 1-0 by Adelaide United on Sunday afternoon.
