Lake Munmorah Public School Newsletter Page 1 Friday 26th February 2016 Principals Report Stop Press - Parents as Teachers (PAT) Program - Dr John Irvine Guest Speaker I am very excited to inform you that the next presenter at our Parents as Teachers program will be Dr John Irvine, Child & Family Psychologist B.A. PhD, M.A.C.E., M.A.P.S. I am assuming that everyone knows of Dr John as he is one of Australia’s most heard, seen and read child psychologists. He is currently a consultant child psychologist at the READ clinic in Gosford and has written several books, including “Who’d be a Parent”, “A Handbook for Happy Families” and “Thriving at School”. He will speak on the topic of ‘Supporting your Child’s Wellbeing’ and will be formally launching his new program called ‘Worry Woos’ which addresses anxiety issues in children. This is a tremendous opportunity for our families to listen to the ‘guru’ and expert in this area. Attached to the newsletter you will find all the details about this next session. It will take place on Tuesday 15 March immediately after school and free child minding is available. Please try to join us. School Working Bee 8:00am Sunday 6 March – Also Clean Up Australia Day This year we have several grounds projects that we would like to complete. In particular we are endeavouring to create a community bush tucker garden to the eastern end of the wooden classroom block adjacent to the oval. The first project, however, is to attend to the existing fenced off garden area outside this same block which has been built with stone edging. Whilst good intentions prevailed when it was constructed a couple of years ago, the end result is that it is unsuitable for students to use as it presents considerable risks to them. This play area has been closed to students of the multi-cat and early intervention students for quite some time. It would be an excellent play area for these students if it was safer. As such we would like to remove the rocks and create a usable play area for them. So on Sunday 6 March we will be holding a school working bee for this purpose. It will commence at 8:00am. Please come along and give us a hand – with some good muscle from many hands, I believe we should be able to get this job done in a few hours. P&C Matters – School Canteen As you would be well aware by now our school canteen is being taken on by the P&C from next week. A newly formed canteen committee has been very busy undertaking the necessary preparations to commence business from this coming Monday. You should not see too many differences to the canteen service with it still operating five days per week. However, there is a new canteen menu that can be found attached here. It is also available on the school website at http://www.lakemunmor-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/home . The committee is very keen to build a successful service that continues the good will that has been established by Sharon over the last few years. We are looking for volunteers to work in the canteen so if you have some time through the week please let Kristy (temporary canteen manager) know or complete the note that was sent home and return to the school. Again we thank Sharon for her hard work and commitment to the children of our school. I know she will be missed by many.

School Activities for the Year Also attached to this newsletter is a sheet listing all the anticipated activities as we know them that will incur costs for families throughout the year. The purpose of publishing this list is to assist families in managing their expenses and budgets in relation to school activities throughout the year. It details most things that will be offered to the students, but there may be some unforeseen opportunities that arise which we will also offer. You will be given plenty of notice if this is the case. I would suggest you detach this sheet, highlight the activities that your child/ren will be involved in and stick it up on the fridge or noticeboard. Notes for each activity will still be sent home but this sheet serves as a ready reckoner of foreseeable, planned activities scheduled for the year ahead.

The School Band An historical moment occurred on Monday morning when, for the very first time, the whole school band came together to practice their first piece. While I thought we would have a jumbled mish mash of squelching noise I was pleasantly surprised to hear the children getting their instruments to make the right note and at the right time. It is so wonderful to hear the sound of music across the school throughout the week. I thank Mrs Robbers immensely for the many hours she has spent in getting the students to this point. They will be doing whole school performances in no time!

Technology Room Refurbishment Have you seen the technology room recently? It is undergoing a total refurbishment and Mrs Short has been busily painting a huge mural on one wall. While it’s not finished yet it is certainly starting to take shape and with our plans to fit it out with the best and most modern technology, it will become a fabulous resource for our school. When completed we will have an open showing of the room and its capacities. Hopefully this should not be too far off.

School Fees Again another reminder that voluntary school fees are now due and I ask that you make payment as soon as possible. A note went home this week detailing the amounts payable. Many thanks in anticipation of receiving your payment.

Parent Volunteers and Visitors It is a requirement of the Department of Education, that all parent helper/volunteers complete and sign a copy of the Prohibited Employment Declaration form that can be found in the Office. This form needs to be completed each year and filed in the Office. We also require that all parents, visitors and volunteers sign in to the Visitor’s Register when entering the school, and also sign out when you leave. This is a security issue as we need to know who is on the grounds at all times in the case of an emergency or evacuation.

Use of School Car Park Unfortunately, the school car park is still being used by people unauthorized to do so. There are also some cars parking for extended periods in front of the waste bins, impeding access to the pickup vehicles. No other person should be accessing the school car park at any time. I understand that there are considerable parking issues around the school but the school car park does not have the capacity to allow the general community to access it. I ask for your assistance in this regard.

Yes, it’s another Book Club! Honestly, I’m not trying to overwhelm you with requests. However, this new Book Club – Redgum – looks great. I would send it out later in the term, but all orders must be received by Monday 7th March.

This Book Club specifically supports Australian authors, illustrators and publishers, so that is a good thing to start! As a Librarian, I really think there is no such thing as too many books. Please look at the catalogue. Redgum only issue one catalogue per term. Ordering is done online by families and then the books are delivered to the school.

Please do not feel obliged to order. I just thought I would give this one a whirl and see how popular it is compared to the Scholastic Book Club, as it provides us with the opportunity to order a variety of books from different publishers.

There are some very popular titles amongst those to choose from, as well as, games and educational packs.

Yours in Reading, Julie Treharne Librarian

We are trialing Redgum Book Club this term orders close Monday 7 March

Redgum Book Club supports Australian authors, illustrators and publishers to provide books specifically relevant to our Southern Hemisphere and keep our Australian children’s book industry strong. They offer a wide range of quality fiction and non-fiction titles and a large range of educational games and products.

Every order earns books for our school and includes a free gift for your child as a reward for choosing a great book to read!

Your child will have brought a catalogue home and you will need to order online at www.redgumbookclub.com.au by Monday 7 March. The website contains thousands of books from previous catalogues, so please use their search field to browse by author or se-ries.

View the term 1 catalogue here http://issuu.com/redgumbookclub/docs/redgum_book_club_term_1_2016_school, and visit www.redgumbookclub.com.au to order. The home page includes links to all titles in the catalogue. They also have a permanent SALE page and accept payment by credit card or PAYPAL.

Orders will be delivered to the school between 21 – 31 March. If you have any queries or questions about Redgum Book Club orders, please contact Caroline Thomas at [email protected] or call 1800 753 875.

Many thanks! The Library Team @

CANTEEN NEWS

Where to start … I just don’t know! I really want to say a big THANKYOU to all the parents, children and teachers for your support of the school canteen and myself during the last 4 years. To my volunteers during that time, a massive thankyou to you too. I can’t name all of you but you know who you are. A very special mention must go to Alan Hessell. He is always willing to lend a hand no matter what, and has been my right hand for most of my time here. I have totally enjoyed myself running the canteen, but it is now time for me to move on, be a mum again and start the next chapter for myself and my family. Once again, thankyou, and keep on smiling.

Kind regards, Sharon Jaques, Canteen Manager
