A renowned great realized DzogchenMaster in his mid-90s, His Holiness

Chadral Rinpoche is a secret yogiknown for his great realizations andstrict disciplines. His Holiness wasborn in the village of Nyarong provinceof Kham in 1913, and soon migratedto Amdo with his family. At the ageof 15, he abandoned his ties with hisfamily, and went to many great mastersto study and practice. He insistedon travelling on foot and refused toenter the residences of householders,staying only in hermitages, caves orhis own little tent.

His Holiness, being the only livingLineage Holder (chodak) of the verySpecial Lineageofthe famed WisdomDakini Sera Khandro(an emanation ofYeshe Tsogyal), and also one of thevery few living disciples of the greatmaster Khenpo Ngagchung (Kathok Khenchen NgagiWangpo Rinpoche), is widely recognized by most of theMasters in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition as one of themost highly realized living Dzogchenyogis.

In addition to his relationship with thegreat master Khenpo Ngagchung,

H.H. Chadral Rinpoche also studiedwith, and also gave back transmissionsof important teachings to, some of thelast century's most renowned masters,including His Holiness DudjomRinpoche Jigdral Yeshe Dorje andKyabje Jamyang Khyentse ChokyiLodro. H.H. Chadral Rinpoche is oneof the major Lineage Holders of theLongchen Nyingthig, and in particularthe lineage line that descends throughJigme Lingpa's heart son JigmeGyalwai Nyugu, via Jamyang Khyentse

Wangpo, Patrul Rinpoche, LungtokTenpe Nyima and then on to KhenchenNgagi Wangpo Rinpoche, who was HisHoliness most beloved Root Guru.

Though his main lineage is theLongchen Nyingthig, H.H. ChadralRinpoche is also the Principal Lineage

Holder (Kyabchok) and the Lord of the Mandala forthe Dudjom Tersar Lineage. He was authorized andempowered by His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche JigdralYeshe Dorje as the Vajra Regent(Dorje Gyaltsap) ofthe Dudjom Tersar Lineagewhile they were still in Tibet.

To this very day, H.H. Chadral Rinpoche is currentlypassing on this precious terma lineage to KyabjeDudjom Yangsi Rinpoche who lives primarily in Tibet.

Gyaltsap Retring, who was then the regent of Tibet,invited His Holiness to Lhasa and received manytransmissions and instructions on Dzogchen from him.As a result, many people from all walks of life flockedto His Holiness for teachings with offerings. HisHoliness saw this as a distraction from the path andleft suddenly to the caves in the mountains blessedby Guru Rinpoche and other masters of the past. Hethen lived as a hermit for decades and became knownas Chadral(a hermit), one who has abandoned allmundane activities.

Back in 1968, there was an incident that an AmericanTrappist monk, Father Thomas Merton, went to

Darjeeling, India and met with His Holiness concerninghis spiritual experiences. After the meeting, FatherMerton mentioned to Mr. Harold Talbott, who waspresent at their meeting, saying: That is the greatestman I ever met. He is my teacher.

H.H. Chadral Rinpoche has shunned institutional

and political involvement in his whole life, choosinginstead to live the life of a wandering yogi and has thusmaintained a hermit tradition all through his life. To thisday, despite his great age, he is still very healthy andstrong, and continues to move about, rarely remainingin one place for more than a few months, to carry outhis Bodhisattva activities for the benefits of all sentientbeings. A lay yogi, he is also greatly concerned withmaintaining strict disciplines in the context of theDzogchenview.

His Holiness is especially well known for his advocacyof vegetarianism and his yearly practice of ransoming

the lives of millions of living creatures in India andNepal. In addition to his emphasis on the union of viewand conduct,H.H. Chadral Rinpoche also stresses thepractice of strict retreats. His Holiness has establishednumerous retreat centers throughout the Himalayas,including those in Pharping, Yolmo and Darjeeling, etc.H.H. Chadral Rinpoche currently resides in betweenhis monasteries in India and Nepal. His Holiness, withhis consort Sangyum Kamala, has two daughters,Tsemo Saraswati and Tsemo Tara Devi.
