His Holiness Strong Sentiment andTenacious Will-power

His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche always has the style andcharacter of a gusty wind which blows strongly and ercely

at times. He never involves himself in politics, neither will hemeet those rich and powerful people who have contaminatedminds about Buddhism. There are many cases of this nature, but we would like to relate one instance, which we haveheard and which does not involve big people. There was avery wealthy person from the West who would like to receiveteachings from His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche. Maybe thisperson has the thought that he has never seen a Dharmapractitioner who does not bow down in front of wealth, solong as the amount is great enough to make them do so !

unreasonable and incomprehensible His HolinessChadral Rinpoche is, we just think that he is, indeed, the most reasonable and most wise and compassionateperson that we have ever known! Behind his sometimesstern face and voice, His Holiness is so full of compassionand kindness toward all sentient beings ! At times ofleisure, he will not do things just to amuse himself; whensuitable conditions arise, he will teach and bless allbeings. Every word and deed of His Holinessnaturally

reects his genuine view, meditation and action ofthe Great Perfection (Dzogchen). As His Holiness hasalready attained the highest stage of natural spontaneity, there is pure simplicity and originality(with no pretenseat all) in his outward appearance, and so, on the surface,His Holiness look is no different from any ordinaryperson.

The View, Meditation and Action of theGreat Perfection (Dzogchen)

This has been so vividly described in the Mountain

Retreatby His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche: Although aYogi like this (one who realizes Dzogchen), united to theNature, has the appearance of an ordinary person, hismind dwells in effortless vision of the Dharmakaya, andwithout action he traverses all the levels and paths.

While emptiness is neither existent nor non-existent(void), the appearance and emptiness of awareness isno different from the natural way of the primal state. Tobe able to recognize this intrinsic awareness is whatconstitutes the View of Great Perfection (Dzogchen);then, to truly experience this view continuously with

Hence, this person brought a big bundle of Americandollars in front of His Holiness, and asked for theteachings, saying that these were the offerings he wouldmake to His Holiness if he gave him the teachings. The answer is so simple, and there is no necessity ofbargaining! His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche took thewhole bundle and threw it onto his face saying get out!,never to see him again. This throwing by His Holinessis already a blessing to the person, in teaching him of

what his arrogance can lead to, as well as to teach himsomething about the real meaning of the Holy Dharma. His Holiness never wants to see him again so that he willnot have another chance to do more bad deeds. Unlessthis person can, from the deepest of his heart, earnestlydo his utmost repentance and confession of his sins, before his heart of wisdom can slowly opens up, uponwhich then he might have a chance to see His Holinessagain.

Just to eat a spoonful of pure and clean rice, Butnot taking a grain of contaminated wealth,

Hewho dares to insult the Holy Saint, Instantlysown the seed for the cause in hell!

On the surface, His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche givespeople the feeling that he is very strong, stern anderce, and sometimes he is even incomprehensible. Hisinstructions are changingfrom the morning till night; histravels, sometimes here, sometimes there, never to becertain until the very last moment. Once his instructionsare out, it is nal and nobody can change him, excepthimself. Indeed, nobody can really understand thereal meanings behind His Holiness words and deeds, especially when it comes to those secret meanings

which can only be transmitted by the mind and cannotbe spoken out. Especially when His Holiness is angrywith someone, no one dares to speak on his/her behalfand everyone becomes so speechless and helpless, asthey are so afraidthat His Holiness will never want to seethem again. This will mean that they will sow the seed of

downfall, as well as tolose the opportunityfor their own swiftliberation. Even whenthose high lamasand Rinpoches areallowed to see His

ones mind is called Meditation. Diligently observe thisawareness, not allowing emptiness to remain in thedomain of theory, bring everything back to awarenessitself without any attachments. With continuous practiceover a long period of time, a time will come whenexperiences will metamorphose into realizations, andawareness will be seen naked and resplendent. Thisis called Action.

Because of the great wisdom which naturally arises fromhis pure intrinsic awareness, His Holiness ChadralRinpoche can observe, come to realize and even predictthe various circumstances and conditions in their entirety, their interdependent origination as well as changes, andmany other things that others just cannot see, so thathis instructions and style of doing things are alwayschanging, yet without any attachments ! To extract theessences from all things, and to use all circumstancesas a support on the Path is a pith-instruction for bothpractices of Vajrayana and of Dzogchen. This accountsfor the reason why, for a lot of times, His Holiness waysof doing things are incomprehensible, and sometimes

even shocking, to all others. It is simply because theylack the depth of wisdom, as well as having too manyattachments in their own minds, to be able to trulyunderstand such a great Master and his ways of doingthings.

Furthermore, if one has resentment in ones mind, then itwill be just the opposite of what you had originally intendto do for your Dharma practice, which shows that you arenot yet ripe as a vessel ! Even if His Holiness ChadralRinpoche has so compassionately bestowed upon youall the teachings and oral pith-instructions of Dzogchen,it will still be useless. The reason is so simple: if one

does not put his/her trust and faith on the Guru, thenwhat is the point of practicing all his teachings?

Again, in the Mountain Retreat, it is mentioned: the most important thing is fervent devotion, to praywith ardor from the heart, without ceasing even for aninstant to consider the Guru as the real Buddha; this isthe universal panacea that is superior to all other waysof dispelling obstacles and of making progress; levelsand paths will be traversed with great momentum.(Of course, here we are talking about those AuthenticGurus, and not those false teachers who cannoteven save themselves from the cyclic existence of

Samsara ! - added by the writers.) Thus, if one can trulyunderstand the secret meanings of the Guru, and thenwholeheartedly follow his instructions for practice, it ismore likely that one will be able to reap the successfulfruit of the Great Perfection (Dzogchen). We sincerelyhope that all those people who have misunderstood HisHoliness Chadral Rinpoche should be mindful about theirown misdeeds and try to make confessions, in order thatthey will not commit more sins and thus waste their mostprecious human births and lifetimes !

His Holiness ChadralRinpoche hadpersonally told usthat: there were twopersons who had comefrom Kham and haddone their three-yearretreats at His Holinessretreat centers, but

His Holiness had nottransmitted to themany teachings. Later, these two persons hadgone to Taiwan, sayingthemselves as thereincarnations of suchand such masters, andhad received teachingsfrom His Holiness, in order to boost their own imagesand positions as gurus.

Nowadays, because of this Degenerate Age, there are

many tricksters who come to His Holiness and try tocheat him for teachings, and that is why His Holinesshas warned us to be very careful about these tricksters, and thatHis Holiness has to be even more strict thanbefore when transmitting higher teachings in future. Aminimum requirement of six years will be required forthe transmissions of higher teachings: three years for theGuru to observe his disciple, and another three years forthe disciple to observe his Guru.

In order to understand such a Holy Saint as His HolinessChadral Rinpoche, rst of all one has to know oneself, and then try to nurture and elevate ones own wisdom.

Otherwise, it will be of no benets even if one can seethe Buddha himself, as he/she will probably think ofthe Buddha as just another ordinary person. So, thisis exactly the same situation with His Holiness! If onecannot see ones true nature, then there is no waythat one can see the Buddha, and then all the practicesand efforts that one does will be just like going to theprecious mountain of treasures but returning homeempty-handed! So please do not nd faults in others !

Whocan understand the heart and mind of theHoly Saint we called Buddha?Withoutmeeting anyone who really understands

him,Hecontinues to uphold the Holy Dharma,Thosewho are powerful and with merits arenumerous on this planet,Please, with all your hearts and minds, assistVajra!
