Counselor’s Corner

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

➢ Character Education: Our value for the month of October is COURAGE.

COURAGE is “Being brave enough to do what you should do, even when you’re afraid.”

Please encourage your children to show courage by:

• trying something new or something that is difficult.

• asking someone to join in when you see that person is alone.

• ignoring those who are not following the rules.

• raising my hand to participate even if I am unsure.

Each day on the ride to practice or at the dinner table, ask your child what she or he did to show

COURAGE. We are looking for these character traits to honor students as our “Lions- of-the-Quarter”.

ATTENTION 4th Graders!!!

You and your family can enter all National Park & Monuments for FREE!!!!

It’s easy to print your pass at home. You don’t even need to travel far. Maryland has many National Parks

including Assateague Island, Catoctin Mountain, Antietam Civil War Battlefield and Fort McHenry. Go to this

website for all information and to print your pass: https://everykidinapark.gov/ . Now go on some adventures!

Music Notes

Did you know?: When given music instruction over seven months, this group caught up to their fellow students

in reading and surpassed their classmates in math by 22 percent. -Nature Journal, 1996

We are delighted to have the students that have signed up for the Instrumental Music and Choral programs this

year! Thank you for encouraging your child’s participation. Please continue to encourage your students as we

move into our concert season. Young musicians should try to practice four days a week at home for 15-20

minutes at a time. When we split up our efforts over time, we can build more muscle and memory for what we

are learning.

Instrumental Books: All Band and Orchestra students need to have the band or orchestra book for their

instrument in order to participate in the program. The books cost around $10 and are available at most of the local

music stores or on Amazon. The title is Essential Elements 2000, Book 1 for that instrument. Violin and Viola

players must also have a shoulder rest. These items are not supplied by the school and are the responsibility of

the family. If your child does not already have these items, please purchase them as soon as possible to ensure

their success.

Blackboard: Our school has a special instructional website. It will be used frequently for band and strings

documents that you may want copies of at home.

To access this information, go to https://blackboard.aacps.org.

Click on the blue “Guest button to login.

The login name is “Lakeshore” and the password is “Lions.”

Click on the “Cultural Arts” tab at the left.

Choose the “Band & Strings” or folder from the list.

General Music& Chorus Website: Ms. Heist has a new website for general music and chorus. Check this site

frequently for updates on what we are doing in class and for chorus forms that you may need. Monthly

newsletters will be posted on the site as well. You can access the site at:

https://sites.google.com/aacps.org/msheistsmusicsite/home

5th grade students: Are eligible to apply for the Performing and Visual Arts Magnet program. All of the 5th grade

instrumental students have learned the necessary skills for the audition, and we will briefly work on the audition

materials in class. Applications must be completed online and submitted by November. There are even audition

prep sessions that students can sign up for at the PVA schools. Additional information can be found at:

www.aacps.org/pva

Music T-Shirts: Please remember that students participating in the Chorus or Instrumental Music program need to

purchase a Lake Shore Music T-Shirt. Orders are due to the Music teachers by October 11. If you have not ordered

one, please do so very soon. Order forms are available on Ms. Heist’s Music Website or from Ms. Heist & Mrs.

Dickinson. While we encourage you to pay online make sure you still turn in a slip so that we know what t-

shirt size to order for your child! The fall order is the only order that will be placed for the entire school year.

Please consider purchasing a shirt that is one size larger than required so it will still fit comfortably in May.

Performances:

There is a special side-by-side performance opportunity coming up for our Lake Shore CHORUS musicians to

perform with the High School in the Star-Spangled Banner. This event will take place on Friday, October 4th.

The opportunity is open to all Chorus members only. Please check with your student for this information or

check on Ms. Heist’s music site.

Page 4: Lake Shore Elementary October Newsletter€¦ · - Find a deck of cards. Flip over two cards and see how quickly they can accurately add or subtract . - At this point every child

This year, there will also be a side-by-side performance for our ADVANCED BAND students to perform the

Star-Spangled Banner with the middle and high school students at the county Marching Band Exhibition on

October 16 (Rain date: Oct 23). Please look for additional information on Blackboard or in your child’s Music

folder.

INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED STRINGS will also have a side-by-side opportunity called Spooky

Strings. This will be a very short concert in the CHS auditorium on October 30. All students are welcome to

perform in costume as long as they can play their instrument correctly in said costume. Check with your

musician or on Blackboard for further details.

Donations: Lake Shore is always open to accepting gently used instruments if you have some at home that will

not be used again. A receipt with instrument value can be provided for tax purposes if desired.

Art News

We are up and running with our work in the art room, and our masterpieces are showing up on Artsonia. I am

in the process of getting all of our new students set up with Artsonia accounts, so if you have not gotten

information about this amazing program please let me know.

Now that September and picture day have passed please remember we often get messy in the art room. Your

child is more than welcome to wear an art shirt in class. I have lots, or you may provide one of your own that

they can keep in their locker and wear on art days. Remember in art we dress for a mess.

We are excited for an awesome school year!!

2nd

Grade Newsletter

Math:

In 2nd grade there is a huge push for fact

fluency. To help your child build fact

fluency try the following ideas….

-Buy flash cards or have your child help create a set. - Find a deck of cards. Flip over two cards and see how quickly they can accurately add or subtract. - At this point every child has logged into First in Math at school so can now do so at home. First in Math can be accessed on tablets, gaming systems, and computers/ laptops. This is a fun way for your student to practice their math facts:

English/ Language Arts:

The most important thing right now is to make sure that your

child is reading the book we are sending home Monday-Thursday night! Please have them read it out loud to you then ask them

the questions provided.

Science & Social Studies:

In science we are starting our

Tremendous Trees unit. The purpose

of the unit is to encourage students to

use inquisitive and creative behaviors

to think like a scientist. Students use

questions to approach problems and

identify attributes to sort, classify, and

make inferences to create analogies

on observational data about our

world.

Important Information:

We cannot stress enough the

importance of instant fact recall!

Soon we will be moving on to

adding and subtracting 2-digit

numbers so knowing basic facts

is essential. We have been

practicing methods such as

adding doubles (6+6=12),

adding doubles plus one

(6+7=6+6+1=13), and making ten

(8 + 4 = 10 + 2).

Please be practicing facts EVERY

night! For ideas see the math

section of this newsletter 😊
