Happy New School Year!

Dear Parents/Guardians:

I would like to extend a warm “Welcome Back’ to all our students, staff and families and hope that everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable summer with friends and loved ones. The staff at Lake Simcoe Public School look forward to working closely with you throughout the 2017/2018 school year to ensure that this is an exciting, fulfilling and rewarding year for all of our students.

A package of important forms was sent home at the beginning of the school year. It is extremely important for these forms to be reviewed, signed and sent back to school. Please carefully review the Student Verification Form so we can update our records with any changes to home address, phone numbers, emergency contacts, email addresses and medical information.

On behalf of the staff at Lake Simcoe, we look forward to sharing a terrific year of learning with your children!

Gifted Screening

Students who display an advanced degree of general intellectual ability require additional program support in order to reach their

educational potential. This support may be through enhancing the curriculum, differentiated instruction and through providing

program modifications. This type of programming is important to engage, motivate and challenge students who are identified as

gifted in either the regular classroom or in gifted classroom placements. In consultation with parents, school staff determines

who theses students are through the gifted screening process. Students may be nominated by either a teacher or a parent.

Parents/guardians of a student who is in Grace 3 or higher, who wish to nominate their child for gifted screening are asked to

contact Ms. Marjerrison by Monday, October 2, 2017.

If your child is nominated, the Special Education Resource Teacher will contact you regarding the screening process. You will be

asked to sign a consent form as your child will be taking a standardized test (the Otis Lennon School Achievement Test or OLSAT).

Your child will be given some instruction regarding the test and will have the opportunity to take a practice test prior to the actual

test. Once the school receives the results, you will be contacted and these results will be shared with you. The school staff will

also explain what any next steps may be.

Meet the Teacher Night—September 28th!

We’re looking forward to meeting our Lake Simcoe PS families

on Thursday, September 28, 2017 from 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm!

Vaccination Reminder for Parents of Grade 1 Students

All students must have an up-to-date immunization record on file at the health unit. Since starting Kindergarten, your child

may have received new immunizations. If so, you must send their updated immunization records to the Simcoe Muskoka

District Health Unit for:

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis, and Polio

Measles, Mumps, and Rubella

Meningococcal disease

Two-doses of a Chickenpox (Varicella) containing vaccine

If your child will not be getting these vaccines, you will need to give the health unit a valid medical exemption or affidavit. To

complete either of these forms, you can call the health unit. Your child could be temporarily suspended from school if the

health unit does not have an up-to-date record on file.

Follow these steps to help protect everyone in your school community:

Check your child’s yellow immunization card

Contact your health care provider to get a record or to get missing vaccines

Share the complete record with the health unit at www.smdhu.org/immsonline or fax the record to the health unit at 705-726-3962

For more information, visit the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s website at: www.simcoemuskokahealth.org.
