Beautiful Lake Tahoe is the host once again for the most prestigious and entertaining celebrity golf tournament in the world. The 21st Annual American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe, July 13-18, is a perfect place to check out the celebs, have a cocktail, eat some lunch, and get caught up in the beauty of the lake, the surrounding snow-capped mountains, and all the fun in the air.

With around 80 players, some of the fan favorites you can see are Barkley, Jordan, Elway, Romo, Rice, Romano, Nealon, O’Hurley, de la Hoya, Hull, Lemieux, Kidd, Hardaway, Aikman, Bettis, Faulk, Miller, Jarrett, Cheadle, and Wagner – just to name a few. There are plenty of new celebs this year also. The Long Drive Contest gets a lot oooohs and aaaaaahs and wows, too. Being the only photo media pass holder for this event every year since 1990, I still love it!

Drew Brees, the New Orleans Saints quarterback, MVP and Super Bowl champ, is one of many celebs to have played in this exciting tournament over the years. The boats and bikinis at holes 17 and 18 will be in full force.

NBC-TV & ESPN covers this amazing event for all to see Tahoe’s

beauty. Also catch the celebs singing with

Arthur Hervey at Center Stage inside Harrah's, the host hotel.

Country superstar Tim McGraw and raising country stars Lady Antebellum kicked off the Outdoor Concert Series at Harveys. McGraw, with so many hit songs, wowed the excited crowd with his southern charm. With a talented band, a huge screen backdrop with wild colors, and a center stage that went down the middle aisle for the fans, Tim in his classic black cowboy hat could do no wrong. Lady Antebellum was high-energy and also well-loved.

Chicago and the Doobie Brothers played three songs from each band together as an encore at the next show and it was unreal. We’ll have photos of them and locals in the August issue.

Rounding out the Outdoor Concert Series is Sugarland July 10, Rascal Flatts July 16-17, Elton John July 25, Stevie Nicks August 6, Bob Dylan August 22, and Chickenfoot September 11.

Catch The Improv at Harveys with host Howie Nave and new comics each week – lots of laughs!

Vex Nightclub inside Harrah's had the packed house Playboy Club

Bunny Search Competition and party that was a blast. Playboy chose 50 cities, and picked one lucky girl from each city for a chance to be in Playboy Magazine. Hugh Hefner will chose the winner. Celebrating 50 years since the Playboy Club first started, Tahoe was treated with five Playboy Playmates who attended. The beauties included Sara Jean Underwood, Kayla Collins, Christine Smith, Juliette Frette and Candice Cassidy. The Go-Go Dancers and cocktail waitresses wore cute bunny outfits, and the Aerial Girls put on a spectacular aerial show that they regularly perform.

MontBleu had the Go Pro 10th Anniversary X-Dance Action Sports Film Festival. Warren Miller, the pioneering ski filmmaker was in town to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. I met the legendary filmmaker at the kick off party at the Park Tahoe Inn. At 85, he told me he made about six to ten movies a year for about 50 years – Wow! I asked him about Tahoe’s extreme skier Glen Plake in the early days and if he thought then that Plake would be the big star he is today. Miller said, “Glen skied on long skinny skis. That was incredibly hard to do and he made it look easy.” “Also, Plake’s Mohawk and charisma

really stood out,” he said. I told Warren how I loved the humor in all his movies and we talked about his incredible life a little more.

MontBleu has two of the biggest Hip-Hop Rappers coming July 17 with Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube. I photo-shot movie star/producer/rapper Ice Cube about four years ago at MontBleu and it was an exciting experience. I saw Snoop Dogg at MTV’s Spring Break in Cancun about eight years ago and pounded fists with him before he went on stage for a live show. I saw myself on TV when I got back in Tahoe. Snoop is a great performer and the crowd loves him.

BLU Nightclub has live music on the weekends, Go-Go Dancers, and great drink specials.

Opal Ultra Lounge, with cool DJs and great drink specials as well, makes for many fun nights.

Catch live music at Whiskey Dick’s, McP’s Pub Tahoe, Mo’s Place, Rockwater, Sam’s Place, Fresh Ketch, The Beacon, Valhalla, Divided Sky, Cilantros, Brothers Bar & Grill, Aprés Wine Company, and Cabo Wabo – just to name a few fun places.

And remember to live the dream. Have fun – you’re in Tahoe!

I feel like I’m posting on my Facebook page every time I make a comment bout something. Recently a listener to my morning show called in and asked where do I come up with my material with regards to being a stand up comic? Hmmmm well I’ve always considered myself as an ‘observational comedian’ sort of just soaking in everything that is going on around me. I believe that the things that happen to us every day is always a good starting point where others can hopefully relate to. Lately though I find myself becoming more of a ‘political comedian’ without even realizing it which stems from observing what it is happening around me. On a national level yes but lately it’s what’s been going on here at the local level that has

really caught my attention. After the El Dorado Grand Jury came out with its assessment on the goings on within the City of South Lake Tahoe’s city council and city manager it’s like having a team of comedy writers coming up with new material for me on a daily basis. I knew that there was some level of dysfunctional activity going on but wow. Someone needs to call the networks for what could potentially be the best Reality TV series in a long time. All I have to do is edit the content but what with the findings of the Grand Jury Report I’ll have enough material to last me through the elections this November.

Speaking of reliaty television shows I was watching the finals of this season’s “Last Comic Standing” last week on NBC and all I kept thinking was, “I wonder what Dat Phan thinks of this year’s crop of comics?” When Dat was on the first season of the reality TV show the rules were much different and most comics thought (to coin the phrase) the show was a joke. But after Dat Phan became a household name overnight season two all of a sudden was very popular indeed. Now it’s a common part of the showbiz makeup if you’re a comic to at least try out for LCS. Full disclosure: I was in fact in LCS season 2 and made the first cut

(along with humorist Will Durst) but ended after that. For Dat the opportunity has opened many doors which have included being a guest on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” voiceover work for the animated program, “The Family Guy,” guest appearances on numerous daytime talk shows including “The Tyra Banks Show” and appearing in his first feature length movie, Cellular”(starring Kim Basinger, William H. Macy and Jason Statham). His latest DVD is entitled, “Dat Phan Live” and is available from Amazon.com or you can buy one after the week he is up here. Dat’s latest CD, “You Touch, You Buy“ is also out and now available on Itunes or you can get a copy after the show as well. And if that wasn’t enough his latest movie, “Yellow Fever” is almost complete. Dat was also included in The Smithsonian Institution’s exhibition of The Top 10 Most Influential Vietnamese-American Individuals. If anyone deserves the credits it’s Dat. It wasn’t that long ago when Day was literally living in the backseat of his car before “Last Comic Standing” changed his life. On stage much of Dat’s material stems from his family background and is an integral part of his humor. Even the tough times finds its way into his act with a comedic twist added. He’s also very proud that his mother was able to raise ot just him but his siblings when things looked their bleakest. “It was my mom that raised me,” Phan said. “That's why so much of my material is based on my mom. Eighty-five percent of my material is true.” He also offers up some poignant insights into his cultural background poking fun of the ridiculous stereotypes and shares that experience of being a regular American guy within a Vietnamese heritage. His fan base has really grown too on Facebook having topped two 5,000 friends page. Man, I have some serious catching up to do. When he can tear himself away from Facebook he’s headlining clubs all over the country. Glad he was able to squeeze in the time to perform up here this week. Appearing with Dat is Shayla Rivera who is very impressive in her right. Quite the line-up the week of July 7th through the 11th.

Ever notice how some people seem to always be in a great mood? I mean, things can literally be tumbling down and then there’s that person who just seems to be the beacon of hope. Well that person is pretty much John Caponera. The Chicago native could pass as one of those motivational speakers or therapists who, to quote Monty Python always look at the bright side of life. We could learn from ‘Cap’ (the nickname that we affectionately call him) and what makes him tick. One of those traits seems to be his love of sports and transfers that love and energy into his comedy act on stage. Because John is a huge sports fan (you have to be if you come from

a sports town like Chicago) some of his favorite sports announcers have found their way into his act. I think it’s one of his biggest highlights and no coincidence part of his closer too. ‘Cap’ is constantly writing and pitching new comedy sitcom ideas. In fact both he and fellow comic/best bud Rocky LaPorte wrote a pilot that starred both of them and of course based in Chicago. Howell J. Malham Jr. of The Chicago Tribune wrote of Caponera, “Every so often the kingdom of comedy is graced with a gifted, naturally refined performer who can effectively demonstrate the transcendental powers of the medium while making it look deceptively easy.”As mentioned earlier John’s play-by-play announcing of both his favorite past times, football and baseball and their announcers is, in a word hilarious folks. My favorite is when he does Chicago Cub’s late, great announcer, Harry Caray. His rendition of him putting on chains in the snow while his wife criticizes him from inside the car is very funny. The other voice he does that is brilliant is that of Vin Scully, long time voice of the LA Dodgers. It’s just such a treat to hear him bring those legends in a comedic format on stage. By the way it should be noted for the record that ‘Cap’ is a Cubs fan (sorry White Sox fans). He received nice comment as well from writer Michael Paskevich of The Las Vegas Review-Journal who wrote that John is, “Unafraid of letting a room grow quiet Caponera sets his own intentionally erratic pace, pausing to perfection to complement his oddly timed but rewarding comic insights. The jokes are further bolstered by his talent for facial gestures that range from goofy to arrogant, making Caponera arguably the hottest club headliner going at present.” Not bad. Also making this an incredibly strong week is having veteran comic Steve Mittleman on the bill. Steve has headlined for years but this being his first time to our room has graciously accepted the middle slot so a very solid week it’ll be. Catch ‘em both July 14th through the 18th.

Living in Tahoe in the summer is like living on a cruise ship. It feels like every weekend you dock at a different port with new unique people to meet. My job is to bring guests to Tahoe and ensure they have a good time. Nothing can be more rewarding than emails I receive a week later that they still ‘can’t stop talking about Tahoe,’ or ‘still haven’t recovered’.

July truly is my favorite month of the year in Tahoe. As the temperature heats up there’s no better place to while away the day then on one of our beaches, golf courses or trail blazing away on your mountain bike. Then as the sun goes down the action heats up in this 24/7 town. Enjoy one of our many entertainment, gaming or nightlife scenes. I have conveniently planned out your July so you can spend your days relaxing or getting in some adventure and your nights painting the town red.

Here’s my advice to check out while the sun is up. Get outdoors. Everyone knows that if your looking for a party or somewhere to relax in

the daytime the beach at Zephyr Cove is the place to be. Beach volleyball, cocktail waitresses on the beach and the hottest spot on the lake. See the real Sierras. I just love the feeling of finally sitting down and tasting that first sip of cold beer at Fire & Ice after you just finished a long hike at Heavenly. That moment is when the whole day is tied together. You’re in Lake Tahoe, get out on it. Water Skiing on Lake Tahoe is intense. Wake up early, get a wetsuit and a shot, you’ll thank me later. Never underestimate the crazy fun you can have with a couple friends on a boat. My advice for renting a boat, Ski Run Boat Company, those guys take care of you.

As the sun goes down be sure to get out around town. I like hitting six places in the same night. I don’t stay in one place too long. I always start the night off in Ciera Steak + Chophouse. It’s hidden back by The Buffet at MontBleu and has the best steak in town. Plus, the service is crazy good; the maitre d’ Tommy Walker and his staff always bring it. My

recommendation, a signature martini, lobster bisque and the chateaubriand. Who doesn’t like a laugh? Hit up The Improv. Every week they feature hilarious new comedians with Howie Nave as the official emcee. Howie, I love your homeless dog impression. Get it on with Artie. If you didn’t enough get comedy at The Improv, Party with Artie is always good for some more laughs. Artie is always fun and I love the people watching. Bachelorette Parties doing whatever it is they do and seeing old men using T.I.’s line, “You can have whatever you like,” to hit on women half their age; try to keep the age difference at 15 years, gramps. Time to dance. Kickback and paint the town red in Opal Ultra Lounge. Located in MontBleu, it’s the spot for a party. Bottle service is really the way to go. With bottle service, you get your own table to sit at, stand, dance on, and party all night. The cocktail waitress makes your drinks, you have bottle runners to clean up after you spill your vodka and Red Bulls and a VIP host

to cater to your every need. Call up Ted, 540-272-1767 (you can thank me later), he always knows how to take care of anyone that steps through the doors. Ready for some Miley Cyrus? Karaoke at Horizon can be one of the best moves anytime after midnight on Saturdays. By this point you’ve had enough drinks to make “Don’t Stop Believing” sang by total strangers sound good. My recommendation, take a birthday cake shot and sing Miley Cyrus “Party in the USA”.

Last stop. Drunken after hours at the HQ Center Bar at MontBleu. Always worth the trip.

New this July. Sugarland on July 9, Rascal Flatts July 16 & 17, Snoop Dogg July 17, Sir Elton John on July 25 and Hot August Nights July 30 – August 1. Add these to the Fourth of July Fireworks and Celebrity Golf Week and you have an all star July.

Enjoy the blue lake, big mountains and hopefully you can fulfill your neon dreams this July. Good luck in planning your summer fun, and remember, if you can’t be good … be lucky!

Welcome to the wild weather of 2010! We still have tons of water coming down from the mountains and this should be a great thing for our fisheries this summer. The problem is the water is so high, late into the month of June, we have not been able to get on the East Carson River as of the beginning of July. This will be great for rafting but not so great for fishing. It has been many years since we have been able to raft/fish into the month of July and there is nothing better than floating the river when temperatures are warm. So, with that said, there are always good things that come with the bad things and I will take water for the fish versus low water for the fisherman anytime.

Fisheries that are good right

now are the West Carson River, Truckee River, Little Truckee River and the East Walker River as well as the Alpine Lakes including Red Lake Caples Lake, Indian Creek Reservoir, Spooner Lake, Burnside Lake and Crater Lake to name just a few! The East Walker has been the savior this spring and has fished as well as I can remember and should continue to well into the month of July. Bridgeport Reservoir is really full and at some point they will have to turn up the flows which will be great for the river system hopefully cleaning out some of the silt and the weeds that have built up over the years. I have heard more stories about big fish this year than I have in many years, the health of this river is back! Fish it with big dries and with Caddis and Stonefly Nymphs, orange is a good color for the big dries.

If you want to get out on a local stream, the tributaries should hold some great fish for the first few weeks of July because of the flows we are having. Wooly Buggers should be the best way to get at the bigger fish but please practice catch and release, we want the bigger

fish to survive so the genetics will continue! These fish normally make it back to the Lake prior to July 1st which is the reason behind a late opener. Please, Please, Please help us protect these bigger fish! Stimulators, Yellow Sallies, Ants and Beetles will work on the surface!

When the East Carson does get to fishable flows, which should be sometime in the early part of July, fish with Streamers and then move to bigger nymphs and then the Caddis should be filled in just after the big bugs finish. There will be fishing on the Carson, just be patient! The West Carson is already there and fish are being caught as we speak! Fish Big Stones, Flash Caddis, San Juan Worms, Lightning Bugs and Copper Johns and look for fish taking dries in the evenings. Yellow Sallies, EC Caddis, Stimulators and Para Adams should work well on the surface!

If you really want to have some fun, try float tubing on one of these lakes! Indian Creek Reservoir should be pretty good until the weeds fill in and that should be around the middle of the month. Red Lake and Caples should fish well all summer with Caples being the star fishery.

Fish the Woods Creek area and or the spill way area from a float tube and look for rising fish taking Ants, Beetles, Calibaetis or Blood Midges. Fishing Wooly Buggers followed by a Blood Midge or a Hares Ear Nymph works pretty well.

Once again, these are just as few of the fisheries we fish on a daily basis and if you have further questions on these or any other fisheries in our area just give us a call or stop by the shop and we will do our best to set you up with whatever it takes to get you into the middle of the fish! Guide services are available 7 days a week and the shop is open from 9 am to 6 pm every day! We are located at 2705 Lake Tahoe Blvd. next to Midas Mufflers and about 3.5 miles from the Casinos! 530-541-8208

The first annual Taste of Tahoe, coordinated to support the fight against cancer, support the vitality of our community, and support the success of our local restaurants and businesses, continues through June with featured restaurants including Blue Angel Café, Fox and Hound, Murphy’s Irish Pub and Rockwater Restaurant, Mott Canyon, and Chevys Fresh Mex. Each restaurant will make a donation for its featured week to South Lake Tahoe Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.

Taste of Tahoe features one local restaurant each week for the weeks leading up to South Lake Tahoe Relay for Life on August 7. The focus is to raise money for the fight against cancer while having great food, drinks, entertainment and fun with friends, family, co‐workers and neighbors at our favorite local restaurants. Everyone is invited to come eat at the featured restaurant each week to support the fight against cancer. Each of the Restaurant Sponsors is making a donation to the American Cancer Society for the week it’s featured.

Nearly 30 local businesses are also sponsoring Taste of Tahoe to strengthen the community’s

contribution to Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. Additional details and a schedule of restaurants can be found online at www.RelayForLifeTasteOfTahoe.com.

Taste of Tahoe is a concept developed by a few local business owners to increase South Lake Tahoe's involvement and contributions to the local Relay for Life event while also helping revitalize the sense of community in the area.
