Myrna and Larry Cohn are natives

of Brooklyn, NY and met while on

vacation in the Adirondacks 62 years

ago. Larry was a successful pharmacist

and proprietor of his own business;

following marriage and the birth of a

son and a daughter, the family moved

to Long Island where they enjoyed a

suburban lifestyle and bought a boat to

sail the Long Island Sound. Their

children spend part of the year in

Sarasota and thought it might be a good

place for their parents to retire...warm

weather, a relaxed atmosphere for

Larry who has “slowed down” a bit.

Using the internet, the whole family

found Lakehouse West, visited and

liked what they saw...friendly faces,

good food, and lots to do. Myrna has

joined an exercise class and is part of

“Happy Beats” percussion band, while

Larry watches the wildlife from their

1st floor apartment overlooking the

lake. Although only here a short time

they are already scheduled to host a

Welcome Table with new friends.

Welcome Myrna and Larry!

Stephanie Crissman was born and

raised in Kalamazoo, MI where she

went to college and met her husband.

They married after graduation and

Stephanie became a 5th grade teacher,

stopping when their family grew to 3

children and they moved to Genesee,

NY near Rochester. Stephanie became

a widow and then later remarried and

had a 4th child (a son). She went to the

Library School at NY State University

and became a public school librarian.

Working later as a volunteer in the

Susan B. Anthony House, she met Ken Burns who was filming

one of his TV specials there. Stephanie also had a program at a

public radio station devoted to blind and visually—impaired

listeners.

Following 9 yrs and the death of her second husband in Silver

Springs, MD, plus the encouragement of her daughter, Barbara,

who lives part-time in Sarasota, all helped with the decision to

move to Lakehouse West where she would enjoy an easier life-

style and make new friends. Stephanie is already enjoying dinner

with others and looking forward to becoming more involved.

Welcome Stephanie!

A Positive Mind Can Boost Your Body’s Reserves

Researchers are finding that thoughts like these, the hallmarks

of people sometimes called ‘cockeyed optimists’ can do far

more than raise one’s spirits. They may improve health and

extend life. There is no longer any doubt that what happens in

the brain influences what happens in the body. When facing a

health crisis, actively cultivating positive emotions can boost

the immune system and counter depression. Studies have

shown an indisputable link between having a positive outlook

and health benefits like lower blood pressure, less heart

disease, better weight control and

healthier blood sugar levels. Even

when faced with an incurable illness,

positive feelings and thoughts can

greatly improve one’s quality of life.

So.. Every day may not be good, but

there is something good in every day.

See the glass as half-full, not half-

empty. Look on the sunny side of life.

And...foster positive emotions and help

make your life the best it can be! Barbara Argue R.N.,

Director of Nursing

The purpose of the Residents’ Association is to promote a

constructive, mutual understanding and spirit of cooperation

among residents and between the residents and Lakehouse West

management. The Association provides channels for residents

to express their ideas. It also provides for an effective flow of

communication among residents, and between the residents and

management, with respect to matters of common interest.

The Association schedules open monthly meetings to which

all residents are invited.

On March 21 Lakehouse West

Residents enjoyed a cutting

edge lecture discussion

presented by resident Margo

Larsen. She spoke to an

enthusiastic crowd regarding

the invasion of personal space

in the workplace in a lecture

entitled "When A Moment

Becomes A Movement".

The lecture covered topics of

sexual harassment such as the

current "Me Too" movement

and the "Time's Up" movement. She highlighted moments

throughout history where this important issue made

headlines as well as women who have made a difference.

On March 13 Lakehouse West had the pleasure of hosting

a concert of “Love Songs from the Twentieth Century”

featuring Mezzo Soprano Margo Coolidge. She was accom-

panied on the piano by resident Peg Smith. Following the

concert everyone enjoyed a cocktail party with beautiful

music, delicious food, drinks, and friends… It doesn't get

much better than that! Margo is also the sister of

Lakehouse West resident Lou Clark.

Lectures and discussions are a regular part of Lakehouse

West University. The “Town

Hall Talks” series is organized

by resident Bernie Ehrlich.

On February 21 Lakehouse

West Residents were treated

to an interesting lecture and

discussion presented by resident

Larry Olson who spoke to an

intrigued crowd on the subject

of “Voter Suppression”.

It was an interesting and informative lecture and discussion.
