General Manager’s Message I want to take a little time this month to talk about the value of having a local station like Lakeland PBS. In addition to providing high quality national programming from PBS, Lakeland PBS provides important local and regional programs like Lakeland News, Common Ground, Almanac, Currents, Backroads, local debates, and local and regional documentaries that all serve our region. You’re likely aware that the media landscape is changing across the country, and not in a positive way… especially for rural America. You may or may not have heard of the phrase “media consolidation”. What this means is that smaller media organizations are being bought up or forced out of business by bigger organizations. Because of this consolidation, important local content is disappearing and programming decisions for local commercial media companies across the country are being made at a distance by fewer and fewer large corporations. In addition, without local owners who have a stake in their local community, profit becomes the sole driving force behind the operation of many corporate owned local radio and television stations and newspapers. Often when this happens, the focus on how best they can serve the local community is lost. Over the past ten years, the number of local reporters in rural America has been shrinking. Local newsrooms are being shut down or marginalized. This crisis in journalism has made public media even more relevant today than ever before. People are relying on public media to be their trusted source for news and information. Local programs like Lakeland News, Currents, local debates, Almanac, and other local and regional public affairs programs tell the important local stories that help to enlighten area residents and empower families with the information they need about their local community to make good decisions and successfully function in our society. As an individual, there is very little you can do that will change or impact media consolidation and its detrimental effects we’re seeing in rural America. That said, you can make a big impact on sustaining local journalism and local reporting by supporting Lakeland PBS. The reason that Lakeland PBS can provide a local news service like Lakeland News is because of the unique funding model we have. As a local community owned non-profit educational television station, we do receive some government support that helps make our work possible. Much of this government funding we receive is in the form of matching grants. These matching grants are entirely dependent on the funding we raise locally from local people just like you along with local business and foundation funding. Here in north central Minnesota, Lakeland PBS is the only local television broadcaster that is providing local television programming including important local journalism throughout the region we serve. If local news reporting and journalism is something that you value and is important to you personally, please consider how you might help support this important work. For some people this may mean a gift of $25 or $50, and this would be much appreciated. I also know that there are people who will read this who are capable of much larger gifts. Just think about the impact that a large directed legacy gift would make on Lakeland News and how a gift like that might impact our ability to sustain and grow our journalism efforts in north central Minnesota for years to come. You can help insure the future of local journalism with your support of Lakeland PBS. Right now we’re beginning our biggest fundraiser of the year. Please consider a generous gift in support of all that we do to serve the region. Thank you! This month we’ll be showcasing some great new programming as we begin our March pledge drive. Check out this edition of Highlights to see all the special programs we have in store for you. Due to the fact that March is our biggest on-air fundraiser of the year, we have a lot of current supporters whose current annual support ends this month. If it’s time for you to renew your contribution, please do your part in support of the programs you enjoy and rely on. You can do so either online at lptv.org or by giving us a call at 800-292-0922. Your support allows us to continue bringing you the local, regional and national programs that you enjoy each and every day. Thank you! As always, thank you for your generous support!
