Smart Start - August 28, 2018Smart Start is our orientation program that welcomes 9th grade and new students to Colchester High School. It is a day for students to meet their HomeBase adviser, navigate their class schedule and meet their teachers. They tour the school, learn what it means to be a Laker, and work with guidance counselors, I.T., and school administrators to ensure they get connected and make every minute at CHS count!

Students can also look forward to an outdoor BBQ where they will be entertained by our very own faculty band!

Buses will run on a normal school schedule for Smart Start. Students should arrive at school between 7:00-7:45 AM and will be dismissed at 2:20 PM.

A Special Thanks to Student Ambassadors!Smart Start would not be a success without Student Ambassadors! CHS has more than 50 students that volunteer to work with administration over the summer to help plan our new student orientation day. This collaborative, creative spirit is what makes CHS such an amazing and welcoming place. Student Ambassadors will greet new students,

Student Locker ProcedureLockers will be assigned to all 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students this year. Freshman locker assignments and combinations will be on the schedule they recieve during Smart Start. Grade 10, 11, and 12 students will have the same locker assignment and combination as last year and those will be on the schedule they recieve on the first day of school.

Students with any locker issues should see Hope Renadette in the planning room.

pass along Laker knowledge, lead school-wide tours, and help students navigate their class schedules. Thanks to Student Ambassadors, Smart Start is guaranteed to be a success!

1:1 LaptopsHello Students and Families,

CHS will begin distributing laptops Monday, August 13th to all students grades 9-12. Students can come to the Genius Bar anytime between 7:30AM and 4:00PM, Monday-Friday, to pick up their school-issued device.

Please note that IT cannot give students their laptop unless they have signed the CSD 1:1 Contract and the Acceptable and Responsible Computer, Network, and Internet Use Policy (AUP) included in InfoSnap.

In addition, students that have been billed for a damaged device ($25) will be required to pay their bill before receiving their laptop. Payments can be made at the Genius Bar by cash or check (payable to CSD).

Students that use their own devices while at CHS should complete the CSD BYOD Contract found under ‘Resources’ on the CHS website and submit it to the Genius Bar.

Did you know …

● CHS laptops cost $650.00 to replace.● Upon graduation from CHS students can

buy their laptop for $50.● HP laptops are more fragile than

Chromebooks and need more TLC.● IT collects laptops at the end of every

school year to assess damage and maintain and update them.

CHS devices that are broken should be brought to the Genius Bar for repair. Students and families should expect the following for unintentional damages:

● Offense #1: No Charge

● Offense #2: $25.00 - and a letter home

● Offense #3: $25.00 - and student is given an older device for the remainder of their time at CHS

Please be advised that damages are cumulative in the four years students are enrolled at CHS.

Students that damage their device intentionally (puncturing the screen, popping off keys ...) will meet with an administrator and may be charged for the 1st Offense.

Parent Portal Info School Supplies

Summer Reading Due!

Dear CHS Parents/Guardians,

Colchester High School will again be using PowerSchool’s Parent Portal as our web-based communication program that allows parents and students secure internet access to real-time data about their student’s school progress. You access the Parent Portal using any computer that is connected to the internet. Parents/students are able to view a variety of information, including grades, attendance, assignment descriptions, and teacher comments. Parents and students alike will have their own login screen. Parents will be given one login for all children they have at CHS.

If you already have a Parent Portal or Student Portal account, then your login information has remained the same.

Parents or guardians who have questions or concerns about Parent Portal may contact Mark Ellingson, CHS Bookkeeper in the High School main office. You can call him directly at 264-5702 or email him at [email protected].

Students with questions or concerns about Student Portal should visit the Genius Bar in room 150, or you can email [email protected].

We have posted detailed login directions and a Parent Portal user guide on the Colchester High School Website. The user guide is a document that introduces the Parent Portal, how to get started using it, working with the different menus to access information, and how to log out of the Parent Portal. The user guide should answer any questions you may have on how to use the Parent Portal.

Sincerely,

Heather BaronPrincipal

Each year we receive a number of calls regarding back to school supplies. We ask that all students bring their school issued laptop to school everyday. In addition to the laptop, pens/pencils and paper would be helpful on the first day of school. Teachers will inform students of any necessary supplies specific to each class during the first few days of school. They are not expected to purchase those supplies immediately. The Labor Day weekend offers some extra time for school supply purchase.

Have you completed your summer work yet? All students enrolled in an AP course or a 9th-11th grade Humanities course have summer work to complete. If you’ve misplaced your work, stop into CHS to pick up a copy of the assignment. If you are enrolled in a 9th-11th grade Humanities course, then your assignment will be due the first day of class.

How AT WorksCHS students are assigned an Academic Adviser and a “HomeBase” location. Each Monday, students meet with their Academic Adviser to make an “AT” schedule for the week. During Monday HomeBase meetings, students and Academic Advisers review student progress in each of their classes and create an intentional schedule that allows for teacher check-ins and support, academic acceleration, silent study, research, targeted skills instruction, and/or physical activity.

In addition to student requests, teachers, administrators, and counselors will periodically pre-book grade-level or whole-school groups for assemblies and other activities during AT. The AT Flex Calendar shows any disruptions to the regular AT schedule and is available on the CHS Website.

We are looking forward to another successful year.

Regards,

The Administrative Team

Advisory TimeDear Parents and Community Members:

One of the ways we ensure success at CHS is focusing on academic excellence and building strong connections and relationships with students. A key strategy that allows for us to do this work is Advisory Time, also known as “AT.” The “A” represents Academic Acceleration, Access, and Advising. The “T” stand for Time.

Advisory Time (AT) is a required, scheduled class for all CHS students. Students are expected to attend HomeBase/AT every day from 9:09-9:39 AM. Senior Privilege does not excuse students from AT.

Each quarter students earn a P (100%) or F (0%) that reflects their attendance and active participation in AT. At the end of the year, students are granted .25 credits for their successful completion of AT. It’s important to note that AT does appear on student transcripts and does impact GPA if students do not attend..

AT StructureMonday: HomeBaseStudents meet with their academic adviser in their HomeBase location to schedule AT for the week.

Tuesday-Friday: ATStudents follow their scheduled weekly appointments and meetteachers for academic acceleration and/or support.

Mandatory Senior MeetingTuesday, Aug. 28th @ 6:30 PMCHS Performing Arts CenterDear Class of 2019: Welcome to Senior Year! This is a reminder that there will be a mandatory senior privilege meeting on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 in the Colchester High School Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. This meeting is for students and their parents/guardians. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the procedures for obtaining your senior privileges. We will also use this time to distribute and sign senior privilege contracts, as well as distribute temporary senior identification cards. Students who do not attend this meeting will be excused only for the following reasons: illness, unavoidable significant family event (e.g. family is out of state; funeral; etc.). Social events such as parties and athletic competitions are not excuses for missing this mandatory meeting. The intent of senior privilege is to allow students opportunities to develop responsibility of managing their non-class time. It provides a transition from the constraints of high school to the freedom experienced in the real world which students will enter when they graduate. The concept was originally introduced by the class of 1994. Seniors must have completed 17 credits and 3 years of high school. Seniors must maintain good standing or will not be eligible for senior privilege for one or more quarters. Senior privilege will not begin until the student receives approval from both their parent/guardian and the CHS administration. Failure to comply with the senior privilege contract may result in the cancellation and/or suspension of senior privilege. If you have any questions about this mandatory meeting, please contact Chad DeMagistris, Assistant Principal, at 264-5734 or [email protected].

Sincerely,

Chad DeMagistrisAssistant Principal

Student Parking UpdateDear students:

Parking is one of the responsibilities that come with driving. At CHS, we offer all students the opportunity to purchase a $5 parking pass that allows parking in designated parking areas at CHS.

CHS student parking spots are lined in red (all other spots are designated for faculty or visitors). In partnership with the Town of Colchester, the Upper Bayside Softball Field lot will be open (and plowed) throughout the year to accommodate overflow parking. If Upper Bayside is also full, then the Lower Bayside parking lot (by the Senior Center/Tennis Courts) will be available.

It is our intent that the CHS parking lot will be equally available to all students who drive. In order to be eligible to park in the CHS lot, all students must complete a parking application and submit a copy of their license, registration, and insurance card, along with $5. All vehicles on CHS property must display their hang-tag. In the event that the student needs to use a different vehicle, they are expected to move the hang tag to whatever vehicle they are driving. If this is an impossibility, students are to notify administration.

Parking in a handicap space will only be allowed with a State of Vermont handicap parking tag.

Vehicles that are parked in handicapped parking spaces or fire lanes will be stickered and reported to the Colchester Police Department. In addition when a student parks without a permit or outside of the parking rules the following happens:

First Violation:· A report is made to the planning room.· A sticker may be placed on the vehicle.· The owner of the vehicle is tracked down.· The student is called to the planning room where they are

issued a debt voucher for $10.· The student is warned that if they park illegally again they

will be fined $25.· Parent is notified by phone call. Second Violation:· A report is made to the planning room.· A sticker may be placed on the vehicle.· The owner of the vehicle is tracked down.· The student is called to the planning room where they are

issued a debt voucher for $25.· The student is warned that if they park illegally again they

will be fined $50 and may be towed.· Parent is notified by phone call and letter home.

Third Violation:· A report is made to the planning room.· A sticker may be placed on the vehicle.· The owner of the vehicle is tracked down.· The student is called to the planning room where they

are issued a debt voucher for $50.· The student is warned that if they park illegally again

they will be towed.· Parent is notified by phone call and letter home. Fourth and Subsequent Violations:· A report is made to the planning room.· A sticker may be placed on the vehicle.· The owner of the vehicle is tracked down.· The vehicle is towed.· Parent is notified by phone call and letter home.

In addition, all vehicles on CHS property are subject to the CSD Search and Seizure policy. Specifically: “Students are permitted to park on school premises as a matter of privilege, not of right. The school retains authority to conduct routine patrols of student parking lots and inspections of the exteriors of student automobiles on school property. The interiors of student vehicles may be inspected whenever a school authority has reasonable suspicion to believe that illegal or unauthorized materials are contained inside. Such patrols and inspections may be conducted without notice, without student consent, and without a search warrant. For the purposes of this section, a student vehicle shall mean the vehicle that the student parked on school premises that day.”

It is important for all students to provide a complete reason why they need access to parking at CHS in the “reason for request” section of the parking request form. Parking permits will only be awarded on a first-come first-serve basis.

From the Athletic DirectorDear Laker Fans,

I am very excited for the fall season to begin at Colchester High School. I strongly encourage all students to consider trying out for a sport this school year. Participating in co-curricular activities is a very important part of the high school experience. I hope to see many new faces at our fall meetings.

● All student athletes must have an updated physical on file in order to participate in sports. If you do not have an updated physical on file, you will not be allowed to practice until we have that documentation. If you are unsure of your physical status, please bring a copy of your most recent physician’s visit.

● If you are interested in playing football please plan on attending a mandatory parent/athlete meeting on Friday, August 10th at 4:30 PM in the PAC (Performing Arts Center).

● For all other fall sports, please plan on attending a mandatory parent/athlete meeting on Monday, August 13th at 6:00 PM in the PAC.

During these meetings, I will review the athletic handbook and you will meet your coaches. The fall practice and game schedules will also be distributed at these meetings. Parent and students should anticipate double session practices for each sport beginning August 13th for football and August 16th for all other sports.

I hope all of you are excited as I am for this school year. Please come to events to support our coaches and student athletes. Please feel free to approach me and introduce yourself so I can get to know as many of our Colchester community as possible.

Dear Parents and Students,

Colchester High School is committed to providing a safe learning environment for our entire school community. To help achieve this goal, the Colchester School Board has approved the use of surveillance systems in monitoring activity on school property. The purpose of the video cameras is to help ensure the health, welfare, and safety of our school community as part of our school safety practice and procedures.

Video cameras have been installed at Colchester High School in all entrances, hallways, stairwells, parking lots, and fields. Students, staff, and community members may be recorded on camera when on school grounds. Video recording may be conducted without prior notice, without a warrant, and without student or parent consent. The District may use the video recordings in conducting investigations and disciplinary hearings when deemed necessary. The Colchester School District Policy on Video Surveillance in included on the last page of The View.

Cameras and keyless entries have also been installed at CHS and all other District schools. During school day hours keyless swipe identification cards will be used by district employees and a camera entry buzz system will be used by the general public to gain access to the building during certain school hours. Guests to the building will be asked to identify themselves before entry access to the building.

The purpose of our use of video camera surveillance and entry access is to help ensure the health, welfare, and safety of our school community as part of our school safety practice and procedure.

As you may be aware, Clear the Halls (lock-down) Drills are being practiced in schools not only in Vermont, but in most other school districts around the country. The purpose of these drills is to practice our building and district procedures in the event that a dangerous situation happens; much the same as we practice fire drills. We ask that parents not pull their children out of school to miss these practice drills. It is important that we all practice and learn from these procedures. Parents do not need to be in the school while the drills are going on. If you are in the building, you will be expected to practice along with us and follow our procedures.

The focus of the administrative team, faculty, and staff is to provide a safe and secure school environment for all students. It is our intention to create the safest environment possible for our children. Please do not hesitate to call me (264-5701) or email me ([email protected]) if you have any questions about this information.

We are proud of Colchester High School and continue to strive for a positive school environment in a climate of respect, responsibility, and pride.

Sincerely,

Heather BaronPrincipal

Policies and Procedures

The following are summaries of some of the policies and procedures at Colchester High School. A complete listing is available on the CSD Website.

CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM

Cheating is theft. Aiding another student in cheating is wrong and will be dealt with as cheating as well. Plagiarism, using someone’s words and/or ideas as one’s own, is a serious offense. Plagiarism includes another student’s copying another student’s composition and/or copying and using audio, video, and printed matter not one’s own. The use of help notes such as Cliff or Monarch without crediting that source is considered plagiarism. The English teacher, at the start of each year, will provide students with guidelines regarding plagiarism. (See the earlier section on Plagiarism.) The consequences for a student who cheats, both providing and stealing the information, are as follows:

1. The student will receive a failing grade.2. The teacher will notify the assistant principal’s office in writing of the incident using the appropriate

referral form.3. The assistant principal will notify the student’s parents and school counselor of the incident.4. The student will have an opportunity to redo the assignment for a grade other than zero, but no

higher than 55. The teacher, the student, and the assistant principal will determine the parameters of the work to be redone.

5. The second incidence of cheating is a Level C infraction. Referrals are cumulative for any or all of a student’s classes within a given school year.

6. THe assistant principal will notify the National Honor Society, if applicable.

USE OF MEDICATION IN SCHOOL

The Colchester School District believes that it is more desirable for medications to be administered by parents/guardians in the home when possible. When students do routinely take medications at home parents/guardians are requested to provide information to the school nurse which includes: the medication the student is taking, the prescribing physician, the condition requiring the medication, and possible side effects.

If a student must take a medication during the school day, the district policy states the following:

● Before the medication can be giving by the nurse, written orders from a physician detailing the name of the student, the drug name and dosage, reason for giving and the time the medication should be administered must be provided.

● All medications must be brought in by the parent/guardian in a container labeled by the pharmacy with the student’s name on the label.

● Individual considerations will be given to students who must keep medications iwht them at all times, i.e. inhalers, Epi-Pens. These students will be required to have a doctors’ not on file stating that they may self-carry their medications.
