Living in God’s Amazing Grace
Hymn of the Month Beginning this month, we will be
introducing a hymn to both services
that may or may not be familiar. It
will be the Hymn of Praise at the
early service. It may be the Gathering Song,
Hymn of the Day or Sending Song at the 10:30
service.
“Give Me Jesus” is the Hymn of the Month for
July.
This African-American Spiritual was written during
the slave years, but by no known composer or
text writer. The lyrics are simple, but poignant.
The message should be our heart’s desire.
Whether we are in tragedy or triumph, whether
we are weathering storms or counting treasures,
we need Jesus first, last, always.
The words are repetitious, emphasizing the
meaning of the text and to help with group
singing and memory. “Give Me Jesus” can be
found in 16-20 hymnals of varying faiths including
ELW HYMN 770.
Greetings to all of God’s children;
It is lovely being here at Lakeside Lutheran church. Scott and I give thanks for the
congregation and for all your support. I know that when a congregation calls a Pastor
there is always change that comes with the newness of a relationship. I thank you, that
all of you have been patient and understanding regarding some minor changes that we
have made. Please know how much I appreciate your cooperation and willingness to
adapt.
I am so excited that on June 30th we celebrated worship together as a whole
congregation. We also welcomed 13 new members to our congregation. We welcome
their presence and the gifts that they bring to our congregation.
We have exciting things going on in our church all the time. Did you know that
Wednesday’s are our busiest days? Our church is used all the time for various activities
such as Quilting, Mahjong, Bridge, Zumba, Men’s bible study, Women’s bible study
Pastor’s book and bible study. Food Bank distribution, Choir, Bell Choir, Men’s Choir,
Vacation bible School, John 3:16 Camp luncheons. Various other meetings that occur
throughout the month such as Executive Committee, Council, Stewardship, Property,
Worship and Music, Staff meetings, Evangelism, Congregational Life, and many more.
Lakeside Lutheran is a congregation that is constantly moving and serving God in the
surrounding community. It amazes me how much everyone does and how involved
people are in the congregation. I know the people here will “wear out” before they ever
‘rust out”.
Thank you all for your gifts and what you bring to Lakeside Lutheran. You make this a
wonderful place to be and to serve God.
One of my favorite hymns is ELW 724 “All who Love and Serve Your City” and
Episcopal hymn scholar Ray Glover states the following about the hymn, “The poet sees
the city as a place over which the Risen Lord reigns as Judge and Glory. He challenges
the city dweller, in the midst of strife and stress, to seek the Lord, the source of life.
Though surrounded by ‘wealth and plenty, wasted work and wasted play,’ he reminds
us that, in the words of Jesus, ‘I must work while it is day.’
Have a blessed 4th of July,
Pastor Sherrie
During Pentecost, we learn from Jesus how to carry out His word in actions that reflect The Way. St. Paul encourages us to live as people made right by God through Jesus Christ. The readings give us practical advice on how believers can exercise concern for one another in the family of faith. There will be many references to “mercy.” How can we show mercy to the people we encounter in our lives as the good Samaritan showed mercy to the man who was robbed while going from Jerusalem to Jericho? The lawyer listened as Jesus told this parable after he challenged Jesus to explain what is involved in obeying the greatest commandment: to love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus uses his visit to Mary and Martha as an occasion to remind disciples that an important aspect of obedience is single-minded devotion to Jesus and His word. Once again…slow down and listen. Finally, St. Paul reminds us to be sure we are listening to and are rooted in Christ. He warns against “the lure of empty philosophies and traditions” that compromise faith.
Music will reflect our listening to Jesus…answering and following His call. Hymns and songs will also reflect God’s unwavering faithfulness to us in listening to our prayers and responding to them. Songs about our servanthood to our family, friends and neighbors will be used in worship as well.
The liturgical paraments remain green, signifying our growth in faith.
Strengthened for service, through Him…
Diane Colin
Music Matters Listen up! It is a theme that permeates our July entrance into
the season of Pentecost…our longest season. This theme was
addressed by our Bishop, Robert Humphrey, at the VA Synod
Assembly when he spoke of the importance of really listening to
one another in the work of our church life.
We start by listening to God’s invitation to “Come, eat and
drink!” In the holy eucharist, in the word read and proclaimed, in
the assembly of the people of God, the dominion of God comes
near. Rejoice! Your name is written in heaven.
When God provides… GOD is so extravagant! Our music program will take another step forward with
the addition of a beautiful Yamaha 6 foot Grand Piano. It is in pristine
condition, very light use and has a lovely tone. After professional movers
relocate it to our sanctuary and retune it, it will be featured in our worship
services by Janice and Diane. It will be used in the August Recital by Anna
Boesne. We give thanks to God for sending Vanessa Glovna our way in looking
for a new home for this beautiful instrument!
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
I am writing to invite you to this year’s Power in the Spirit
gathering at Roanoke College, July 11 to 13, 2019. Every
year, Power in the Spirit gathers people of all ages for a
time of fellowship, learning, serving, and worshipping God
together.
I especially enjoy our optional workshops. Depending on your personal tastes, you
can spend a day attending academic lectures, or hearing about social ministries
going on all across our commonwealth, or getting your hands covered in dirt with
Habitat for Humanity, or getting your hands covered in dough while making
communion bread. There is something for everyone at Power in the Spirit!
We are also continuing our commitment to host children at this event so they’ll have
fun activities available all day long while their accompanying grownups attend
workshops, Bible studies, and keynote speeches. Our children’s program is going so
well, we’ve reduced our prices to encourage more kids to attend!
Speaking of keynotes, our special guests this year include Dr. Dawn Rudman! A
leading expert in child developmental psychology, Dr. Rudman develops faith
formation resources for Sparkhouse and Augsburg Fortress. Joining her will be the
Rev. Dr. Rolf Jacobson, who returns to Power in the Spirit to share his expertise as
Professor of Old Testament and the Alvin N. Rogness Chair of Scripture, Theology and
Ministry at Luther Seminary. George Donovan, no stranger to Power in the
Spirit, will lead a band made up of musicians from across our Virginia Synod, and
beyond!
Power in the Spirit is also about community service, and in addition to being able to
join a Habitat for Humanity build, you can also help Lutheran Immigration and
Refugee services with their welcome ministry.
If I keep trying to sum up Power in the Spirit, I’ll just end up writing a whole new
registration book! I can’t think of too many other opportunities for us all to come
together from across our Virginia Synod (and beyond!) and just enjoy being together
to worship and serve our Lord. I hope you’ll join in the fun with us this year.
Grace and peace be with you,
Pastor David C. Drebes
Power in the Spirit Coordinator
Virginia Synod, ELCA
A Congregation meeting will be held on July 14 at 9:30 immediately following the 8:00 worship service. The purpose of the meeting is to vote on the recommendation from the Congregation Council to hire an architect for the proposed new building. The proposed building will house a fellowship hall, kitchen and pantry, restrooms, two classrooms with one opening to the fellowship hall and a Food Program room. Preliminary drawings of the proposed building will be on display in the narthex prior to the meeting. All are welcome to attend the meeting and ballots will be distributed to members only at the meeting.
Welcome to another addition of Messages from the Mechanical Room. As you probably noticed or will notice on your next trip to the church, the church doors have been returned and reinstalled following an extensive re-finishing in Lawrenceville, VA. The Property Committee elected to use the Maddux Short Cabinet Shop to do the work. Maddux has experience with the doors since he did them over some 10 years ago. We are very happy with the results and hope that you will be impressed too. And now a note about the finish. This is a high quality commercial finish that requires nothing other than a gentle cleaning with soap and water as necessary, such as after pollen season. This finish should last for a number of years. If there is any concern or questions about the doors or finish, please contact me or someone on the Property Committee. This completes the second of three planned projects this year. Our final big project for 2019 will be the front bank later this summer.
One other note about the doors. They both have new sweeps on the bottom to keep wind and rain out of the Narthex. These sweeps are stiff and the one on the left hand door facing the church in particular may not let the door close and latch completely. If you are locking up, please insure that this door is completely closed before locking the door.
And finally, a special “Thank You” to the Front Door Task Force Team: Fred Gerbing, Jim Phillips, Clay Huntington, John Krysa (and his friend), and Scott Miller.
Until Next Time,
John Colin, Property Chair
WHO AM I ?
This puzzle was written by a lady in
California in response to an offer from a
gentleman in Philadelphia that he would pay
anyone $1000.00 who could write a puzzle he
could not solve. He failed to do and paid the
$1000.00. The answer is one word and it
appears only four times in the Bible. Can you
figure this one out? Please email the church
office [email protected] with your
answers.
Adam God made out of dust
But thought it was best to make me first.
So I was made before man
To answer God’s most holy plan.
A living being I became-
Adam gave me my name.
I from his presence then withdrew
And more of Adam never knew.
I did my Maker’s law obey
Nor ever went from it astray.
Thousands of miles I go in fear
But seldom on the earth appear.
For purpose wise which God did see
He put a living soul in me.
A soul from me God did claim
And took from me that soul again.
So when from me the soul had fled
I was the same as when first made.
And without hands or feet or soul
I traveled on from pole to pole.
I labored hard by day, by night
To fallen men I gave light.
Thousands of people, young and old
Will by my death great light behold.
No right or wrong can I conceive .
The Scripture I cannot believe,
Although my name there is found.
They to me are an empty sound.
No feat or death doth trouble me.
Real happiness I’ll never see.
To Heaven I shall never go
Or hell below.
Now when these lines you slowly read
Go search your Bible with all speed.
For that my name is written there
I do honestly to you declare.
Dear Friends in Fellowship,
Thank you so much for lending us
the wheelchair. Our visit to Kill Devil
Hills and other beach areas was
wonderful and simple with the use of
the chair. With the use of the chair
my husband was able to read every
exhibit and detail to his heart’s
content. Thank you again! May
your day be richly blessed as you
see new mercies each day.
Sincerely,
Mary Pollard

Raising up to God those we know to be in need of his touch for healing and wholeness. The fol-
lowing list includes long term concerns. There is also a list in our weekly bulletin that has more current and
acute needs. Daily prayers for all these folks are important. Please help us to keep these lists cur-
rent. If you have names to add please call the church office. Likewise, if any of these names
can be removed please let us know that as well. Regularly remember these in your prayers...
We also invite regular prayers for:
• Our companion in Papua, New Guinea, Warangoi Lutheran Church
• Our Virginia Synod, Rev. Robert F. Humphrey and his Staff,
• And the ELCA, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton and her Staff.
• All who engage in missions around the world proclaiming the Gospel globally,
often in places of danger and hostility.
• In our prayers for world peace, we are also remembering to ask for God’s
care and keeping for those who have been deployed to places of potential
danger around the world. Many of these are in military service, but there are
also civilian agencies represented, support staff and humanitarian workers.
There are several such persons directly related to our church family for whom
we invite your prayers by name: Jason Watson, Terry Rutan, Amanda
Chavez, Andy Gerbing, Mollie Medearis, Christopher Otten, Parker McCall, &
KC Jones.

Care to Share will be July 14, 2019
Please mark your calendar to remember to bring non-perishable food items to be distributed to needy
families, this time through Room at the Inn . Monetary gifts may be given as well. If included in
your regular offering, please designate the amount under “other” with the notation “ Care to Share.”
If making a separate donation, please use an envelope from the back of a chair in the sanctuary and
clearly mark it “ Care to Share.” All monetary gifts should be placed in the offering plate....not the
baskets on the floor. This is especially important for “cash” donations.
Thank you for your continuing generosity.
