Designed for Years 1-7 ‘Investigator’ bags areavailable in the Djanogly Art Gallery and contain artmaterials appropriate to each exhibition, withquestions to encourage children to really look at theart. Whole classes may use these bags, through ourprovision of extra clipboards and activity sheets.

Outdoor & MuseumInvestigators (in development)

We are developingresource packs to enablechildren to explore thenatural environment aroundthe lake and woodlands ofHighfields Park in whichLakeside is situated. Activitysheets will help the childrenidentify flora and fauna and

creative tasks encourage them to experienceoutdoor learning in an enjoyable, hands-on way.Similarly work is being progressed on Museumpacks in readiness for the new Museum in 2012.

Travelling Exhibitions

Everyday Life in Margidunum is a travelling exhibition basedon the local site of Roman Margidunum (at Bingham inNottinghamshire), and includes original artefacts as well asreplicas of objects in the Museum. It contains suggestions foractivities suitable for Years 1-7, and for children with specialneeds.

Online Resources from Manuscripts and Special Collections

’Schools Resources’ currently offer two themes which focuson Key Stage 3 and GCSE. They contain suggested lessonplans based around studying full-size digital images oforiginal documents.

’Research Guidance’ provides images, information andquizzes about original sources and key skills, including theuse of archives, historic dating systems, and pre-metricweights and measures.

You can download these and other online content from theManuscripts and Special Collections web pages.

Teachers’ Packs for Theatre Performances

Many of our visiting companies provide education packs toaccompany their touring shows. They contain backgroundinformation and ideas for classroom activities tocomplement your visit to Lakeside. What is Lakeside?Lakeside is the University of Nottingham’s public arts centreand museum. It has a diverse performing and visual artsprogramme, embracing both traditional and contemporarywork, on a single site close to the centre of Nottingham.Our learning programme offers students excellentopportunities to interact with high-quality arts and museumpractice.

Our accessible buildings are set in the beautifulsurroundings of Highfields Park at the south entrance of theUniversity Park campus.

The Djanogly Art Gallery is nationally renowned for itsexhibition programme which ranges from historical showsto groundbreaking contemporary work. New display spaceand a new learning studio will open in late 2011, part of alarger refurbishment plan.

The University of Nottingham Museum has a collection ofregional archaeological finds covering a period of 250,000years, including objects from the Palaeolithic to the post-medieval period, with good collections of Saxon andRoman material. Currently based in the Department ofArchaeology it will relocate to the Rotunda, next to theDjanogly Art Gallery in 2012.

The Djanogly Recital Hall located in the Department ofMusic next to the Rotunda, has an excellent acoustic, andis available for hire outside University term times.

Next to the lake is the D H Lawrence Pavilion which housesthe Djanogly Theatre; two galleries (the Weston showcasesthe University’s collections of rare books, manuscripts, andarchives including many with local relevance, and theWallner features contemporary work by artists working inthe region); an artist-in-residence studio; as well as studiosfor performing arts and visual arts.

The Djanogly Art Gallery and the D H Lawrence Pavilionboth have welcoming cafés with easy access to the Park.

Lakeside’s Learning Team aims to extendand enhance our work in the communityand in formal education. The Teamcollaborates with Lakeside’s programmingstaff, as well as staff in the University’sManuscripts and Special Collectionsdepartment, to integrate the service withinthe programme as a whole.

What can we do for you?

The Learning Team at Lakeside works closelywith schools and colleges, devising activitiesin collaboration with teachers and otherpractitioners. We are always interested tohear your ideas and feedback so please getin touch, attend our consultation events, ormeet us for an informal discussion. Weencourage you talk to us and visit beforeorganising a self-guided class trip.

Primary school drama workshops - Supporting creativeprovision across all key stages. Our story-basedworkshops for Early Years and Key Stage 1 provide acreative stimulus for younger children, enabling them tostretch their imaginations and physically engage withstory making.

Secondary school live theatre review - Key shows fromour theatre programme are interpreted through theexploration of dramatic conventions and styles, linkingclosely to examination criteria. Students discuss thedeconstruction and reconstruction of the show in livelypost-show seminars.

Secondary school tailored workshops - These aredesigned for GCSE, AS, and A2 students to support theraising of attainment and gaining higher grades inexams, linked to examination requirements (we offerworkshops tailored to any exam board).

The Performing Arts Studio provides a flexible spacefor these and other activities.

TailoredProgrammesCreative and Media Diploma (and other arts courses)

An example of our tailored programme is the help wecan provide to deliver the vocational element of theCreative and Media Diploma, introducing students tothe full range of roles in a busy cultural venue.

ProfessionalDevelopmentINSET

INSET sessions for both primary and secondary schoolteachers are designed to equip teachers with practicalskills to use in the classroom as well as providing an insightinto rehearsal techniques and artistic practices. They are anideal opportunity to refresh and extend teaching skills.

Sessions are tailored to suit schools’ needs. For examplea drama session may cover basic rules for the dramaclassroom, games and activities to explore texts andthemes, storytelling, and informal performance, while art,craft, design and critical interpretation skills are on offerin INSETS with a visual art focus.

Teachers’ Consultation Events

These informal eveningspresent an opportunityfor teachers and othersto come together, meetthe Lakeside LearningTeam, share ideas andplans, create networksbetween schools, andhear first-hand aboutnew productions andexhibitions.

Fully facilitated sessions - Students engage with theartwork, articulate responses and express personalviews through our own staff and a group of highlyexperienced freelancers, often in the galleriesthemselves. We also have the facilities for practical artsessions in our Visual Arts Studio.

We also explore possibilities for cross-curricular worksuch as literacy development in a gallery context; and indelivering History GCSE creatively through archivematerial to explore notions of identity and community.

Self-guided visits - You are welcome to visit Lakeside’sexhibitions with your class. Self-guided visits are free butplease book in advance to help us manage capacity.

Further advice on access to Manuscripts and SpecialCollections housed at the University’s King’s MeadowCampus is available from that Department.

We hold sessions at the Museum for primary andsecondary school students, including A level students,relating to the curriculum and combining sciences and humanities through archaeology.

ProfessionalDevelopmentINSET

INSET sessions for both primary and secondary schoolteachers are designed to equip teachers with practicalskills to use in the classroom as well as providing an insightinto rehearsal techniques and artistic practices. They are anideal opportunity to refresh and extend teaching skills.

Sessions are tailored to suit schools’ needs. For examplea drama session may cover basic rules for the dramaclassroom, games and activities to explore texts andthemes, storytelling, and informal performance, while art,craft, design and critical interpretation skills are on offerin INSETS with a visual art focus.

These informal eveningspresent an opportunityfor teachers and othersto come together, meetthe Lakeside LearningTeam, share ideas andplans, create networksbetween schools, andhear first-hand aboutnew productions andexhibitions.

Talks, Tours and WorkshopsGalleries

Fully facilitated sessions - Students engage with theartwork, articulate responses and express personalviews through our own staff and a group of highlyexperienced freelancers, often in the galleriesthemselves. We also have the facilities for practical artsessions in our Visual Arts Studio.

We also explore possibilities for cross-curricular worksuch as literacy development in a gallery context; and indelivering History GCSE creatively through archivematerial to explore notions of identity and community.

Self-guided visits - You are welcome to visit Lakeside’sexhibitions with your class. Self-guided visits are free butplease book in advance to help us manage capacity.

Museum

We hold sessions at the Museum for primary andsecondary school students, including A level students,relating to the curriculum and combining sciences and humanities through archaeology.
