Happy February Everybody!
We just wrapped up our tumbling unit and now we are going to hit tons of sports skills hard
for the month of February. Our goal is to increase our kid’s skill level...which will in turn
increase their confidence, enjoyment of the sport, and even their fitness level. I would love
to fill the Macatawa Bay Middle School teams with kids from Lakewood in a few years.
Have you been doing any winter cleaning lately? If you have and are clearing out any
slightly used, non marking gym shoes then I would love to take them. We use them for kids
who forget to bring them in or simply can’t afford them. If I ever get too many, I donate them
to other schools. It’s a win for all! Stay warm and do your very best to keep your kids
moving in this cold time of year. I hope you have a great winter break.
Spring is coming...I think!

PS. We may do a tiny bit of square dancing
too this month. I am sure you will be hearing
about this!

Music Notes from Mr. Loughrin
On Tuesday, February 27st, Lakewood 5th graders will have the wonderful
opportunity to attend a special concert by the Grand Rapids Symphony
Orchestra. This is an annual event exclusively for 5th grade students, as they
prepare to transition to the middle school music program. This concert is free
and the Grand Rapids Symphony comes to Holland to perform for 5th graders
along the lakeshore. The event is held at Central Wesleyan Church in Holland.
We are very excited to give our students the opportunity to hear a professional
orchestra and to make connections to the some of the music, musical
instruments and music concepts we have studied in music class. 5th graders
just completed a piece of art with Ms. TenBarge depicting a scene from the
stories represented in the Music work: Scheherazade by Nicolai Rimsky-
Korsakov, a late-romantic period Russian composer. Photos of student artwork
has been sent to the Grand Rapids Symphony who will then select from student
work from around the area to be shown on big screens during the performance.
For any Lakewood students interested in learning more about instruments of the orchestra, here is one of my favorite websites with lots of games and activities about instruments of the orchestra. Log onto: www.sfskids.com (San Francisco Symphony Kids website).
SPANISH SPOTLIGHT WITH SEÑORA DILLON
Third grade students are hard at work learning Spanish numbers 0-60. We will have a test on numbers in a
few weeks. I encourage kids to practice at home. There are some great resources online. Here are two
websites that offer fun games for Spanish numbers:
https://www.quia.com/jg/65552.html
https://rockalingua.com/games/numbers
Fifth grade students are spending time in the computer lab
researching a Spanish speaking country of Central America and
Caribbean. Students are busy gathering all of their information
and soon will share what they have learned with the rest of the
class. Stay tuned for some cool facts about these fascinating
countries!
SPANISH SPOTLIGHT WITH SEÑORA DILLON
First graders have been learning jobs in the community vocabulary. Some of the words we’ve
learned are maestra (teacher), cocinero (chef), and bombero (firefighter). We are practicing
these new words with games, stories, and a fun song to the tune of “Farmer in the Dell”!
Don’t forget to check out my website. There are fun online resources for practicing Spanish at home:
