Network Equipment Snell’s Law: When light crosses the boundary between two
materials, it is bent (refracted) in such a way that is dependent onl y upon the relative indexes of refraction of the two materials.
Network Equipment
Total Internal Reflection: The optical mechanism by which fiber optics are made to work. If the
angle of incidence of light attempting to cross from a high index to a low index medium is in excess of the critical angle, then no refraction occurs
and the light is totally reflected.

Round Trip Propagation Delay
• The time required for a bit to travel from a transmittingdevice to a receiving device and then back again to the originating device on the same network.• In a CSMA/CD Ethernet network, any device on that network must be able to transmit the first bit of a transmission to and from another device on that networkbefore the last bit of the transmission is transmitted. • This guideline insures that, in the worst case, when a device begins a data transmission it will be able to detect
collision occurring from anywhere with in the same collision
domain before the transmission has completed.
• As we all knowwith Ethernet LANs, there are limitations on th e distance by which equipment can be connected to a hub
(repeaters) interface. With 1 0 BaseT, the distance is 1 0 0 meters when using UTPcabling, and 2 0 0 0 meters when usi
- - 543ng fiber cabling. And we all remember the rule when c onnectinghubs together.
• Wellwhathaschangedwith100BaseTLANs? ThemaximumroundtripdelaytimeacrossaLANstillremainsat512bittimes. For10BaseT, thisequatesto51.2microseconds. With100BaseT, thebitsaret r ansmi t t ed 10t i mes f ast er. This results in a maximum round trip delay of 5.12 microsec
onds. To compensate for the reduction in time, the 100BaseT st andard has reduced the number of repeaters and the length of cabling allowable on a LAN, and limited the distance between t
wo repeaters to five meters with UTP cabling.
Round Trip Propagation Delay
• When calculating the round trip delay on a 1 0 0 Mbps LAN, the following formula should be used to determine if the round trip delay meets the IEEE standard.
• DTE Equipment Delay + Cable Delay + Repeater Delay < 512 bit times (5.12 microseconds)
Round Trip Propagation Delay
• The DTE station interface is the first factor in determining the round trip delay. If the stations are connected using TX, FX or a combination of TX and FX, a delay of 100 bit
10times needs to be used for DTE Equipment Delay. If 0 44BaseT ( wire networking) is used, additional delay bit
s will be experienced.• The cable delay can easily be determined by multiplying
the total cable length by the Delay Per Meter value. If a station is connected with 100 meters of UTP, the round
1112 112trip delay is . bit times or . microseconds. The de lay per meter value is less for fiber because the signal wil
l travel faster on a fiber connection than on a UTP connecPPPPP
Round Trip Propagation Delay
• Two types of repeaters can be used with 100MbpsPPPPPPPPP
1A class repeater is used when combining 100BaseTX/FX and
100 4BaseT connections. On a LAN, only one class 1 repeater
can be used due to the 140 bit delay. A class 2 repeater is used
when using only the 100BaseTx/FX interfaces. Only two class 2
repeaters can be used on a LAN. In most networks, onlythe
class 2 repeaters are used. The repeaters are usually connected
with a five meter cable.

Lets review some samples of calculating the round trip 100delay on a BaseTX/FX LAN. The first example (fig
1 2 100ure ) includes stations connected to a Base T hub. One of the stations is connected to the hub with
100meters of UTP. The second station is connected 75to the hub with meters of fiber.

Round Trip Propagation Delay
Let's take a second, more complicated example. In this case we have two class 2 repeaters. The repeaters are connected
with a five meter UTP cable. Stations are connected to each repeater with 100 meter UTP.

Conclusion• As you can see, calculating the round trip delay is not all t
hat difficult. However, the thing to remember is that the l ength of the network has been reduced when compared
with a 1 0 BaseT network. Due to the speed of a 1 0 0 BaseT LAN, it is necessary to ensure all cabling and equip
10ment meet the IEEE standard. When installing new 0Mbps LAN equipment, it is important to take the time t

• Ports connecting the switch to another switch or other device can be - combined (trunked) to function as a single, higher speed link that
dramatically increases bandwidth and fault tolerance. A maximum of fo ur ports can be combined in a single port trunk. The Spanning Tree
Protocol (STP) sees a port trunk as a single link. For more information on port trunks, refer to the manual you received with the switch.
• Note: On a pair of switches you plan to connect with a port trunk, the ports to be used in the trunk should not be linked until after you
configure them for trunking. Otherwise, a "broadcast storm" could occur , which could impair network performance.
Spanning Tree• The switch uses the IEEE 802.1D Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), when
enabled, to ensure that only one path at a time is active between any two nodes in the network. In networks where there is more than one ph
ysical path between any two nodes, STP ensures a single active path bet ween them by blocking all redundant paths and retaining them as backu
ps. If the active path shuts down, then STP automatically activates (unbl ocks) an available backup to serve as the new active path. The default S
TP setting is "Off". STP sees a port trunk as a single link, or path.

Repeater - A simple network hub that serves as an ethernet level 1 (Physical Layer) gateway between different subnetork segments.
Typically, a repeater merely amplifies and passes through all inform -ation to all of its ports. More sophisticated repeaters sense physical l

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) The WLAN standards were started with the 8 0 2 .1 1
standard, developed in 1 9 9 7 by the IEEE. This base standard allowed data transmission of up to 2 Mbps. Ov
er time, this standard has been enhanced. These extensi ons are recognized by the addition of a letter to the origin 80211 80211al . standard, including . a and
80211. b. The chart below details the various stand 80211ards related to . .
Wireless LAN
802.11 Standards • 80211. The original WLAN Standard. Supports 1 Mbps to
2 Mbps.• 80211 High speed WLAN standard for 5 Ghz band.
Supports 54 Mbps.• 80211I . b WLAN standard for 2 .4 Ghz band. Supports
11 Mbps.• 80211 Address quality of service requirements for all IEEE
WLAN radio interfaces.• 80211 - Definesi nt er access poi nt communi cat i ons t o
- facilitate multiple vendor distributed WLAN networks.• 80211 Establishes an additional modulation technique for
24 54. Ghz band. Intended to provide speeds up to Mbps.• 80211 Defines the spectrum management of the 5 Ghz
band for use in Europe and in Asia Pacific.• 80211 Address the current security weaknesses for both
authentication and encryption protocols. The standard encomp asses 8 0 2 .1 X, TKIP, and AES protocols.

Wi-Fi• Short for wireless fidelity and is meant to be used
80211generically when referring of any type of . network - 80211 80211, whether . b, . a, dual band, etc. The term is
- promulgated by the Wi Fi Alliance. Any products tested a - nd approved as "Wi Fi Certified" (a registered trademark) - by the Wi Fi Alliance are certified as interoperable with e
ach other, even if they are from different manufacturers. - A user with a "Wi Fi Certified" product can use any brand of access point with any other brand of client hardware t
- hat also is certified. Typically, however, any Wi Fi product 24using the same radio frequency (for example, . GHz for
80211 11 5 80211. b or g, GHz for . a) will work with any oth - er, even if not "Wi Fi Certified."
• - Formerly, the term "Wi Fi" was used only in place of the 24 80211. GHz . b standard, in the same way that
8023"Ethernet" is used in place of IEEE . .

ERROR CONDITIONRunt• A Runt is a complete frame that is shorter than 6 4 bytes (5 1 2 bits),
whichisthesmallestal l owabl e f r ame. I t can be caused by a col l i si on, dodgy sof t war e or a faultyport/NIC.
Long• Thisisaframethatisbetween1518and6000byt es l ong. Nor mal l y i t i s due t o f aul t y har dwar e or

-processed. This could point to a problem where the IPG is too small or non e xistentsuch t hat t wo f r ames j oi n t oget her .
Jabber• This is when a device is having problems electrically. Ethernet relies on
electrical signalling to determine whether or not to send data, so a faulty ca rd could stop all traffic on a network as it sends false signals causing other d
evices to think that the network is busy. This shows itself as a long frame wit h an incorrect FCS or is an alignment error.
Frame Check Sequence (FCS) Error• This defines a frame which may or may not have the right number of bits but
they have been corrupted between the sender and receiver, perhaps due to interference on the cable.
Alignment Error• Frames are made up of a whole number of octets. If a frame arrives with part
of an octet missing, and it has a Frame Check Sequence (FCS) error, then it i s deemed to be an Alignment Error. This points to a hardware problem, perh
aps EMF on the cable run between sender and receiver. Broadcast Storm
• An incorrect packet broadcast onto a network that causes multiple stations to respond all at once, typically with equally incorrect packets which causes
the storm to grow exponentially in severity. When this happens there are to o many broadcast frames for any data to be able to be processed. Broadcast
frames have to be processed first by a NIC above any other frames. The NIC filters out unicast packets not destined for the host but multicasts and broad casts are sent to the processor. If the broadcasts number 1 2 6 per second
or above then this is deemed to be a broadcast storm. An acceptable level of broadcasts is often deemed to be less than 2 0 % of received packets altho
ugh many networks survive well enough on higher levels than this. The perf - ormance lower specified workstations may be impacted by as little as 1 0
0 broadcasts/second. Some broadcast/multicast applications such as video conferencing and stock market data feeds can issue more than 1 0 0 0 br
oadcasts/sec.
ERROR CONDITION
Collisions• Collisions are a normal occurrence on an Ethernet network. The more
devices there are within a segment (Collision Domain) the more collisions are likely. A badly cabled infrastructure can cause unnecessar
y collisions due to a device being unable to sense a carrier and transmit ting anyway.
Jam• PPPPPPPPP PP P PPPPPPPPPP PPP P PP PPPPP PPP P PPP PPPPPP PP PPP PPP ,
other stations know that a collision has occurred. A repeater, on seeing a collision on a particular port, will send a jam on all other ports causing
collisions and making all the stations wait before transmitting. A station must see the jam signal before it finishes transitting the frame otherwis
e it will assume that another station is the cause of the collision.

• Ports connecting the switch to another switch or other device - can be combined (trunked) to function as a single, higher speed link that dramatically increases bandwidth and fault tolerance.
A maximum of four ports can be combined in a single port trunk . The Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) sees a port trunk as a single
link. For more information on port trunks, refer to the manual y ou received with the switch.
• Note: Onapairofswitchesyouplant o connect wi t h a por t t r unk, t he por t s t o be used in the trunk should not be linked until after you configure them f or trunking. Otherwise, a "broadcast storm" could occur, which
could impair network performance.
