OKINAWA NENCHOSHA CLUB UPDATE

By Irene Yamashita

In reviewing the weeks before our cultural

celebration of Beiju and Kajimaya, we learned about Medication Management on July 27 from Patrick Uyemoto from the Pharmacy of Times Super Market, and on August 3, Brandi Ching of Kaiser Permanente along with her Brain Gym Consultant went over some simple acupressure points to help with learning, memory and balance. We were reminded again how water hydration is key to maintaining good health.

Our only fundraiser for the year was our AndagiSale at the August 10 Show & Sell. It was a tremendous success, thanks to the promotion of ticket presales and our hard-working Board and helpers who started on Wednesday afternoon to prepare, and showed up very early on Thursday morning to mix and fry the popular Okinawan doughnuts. Special thanks to Jikoen for the equipment and their expert workers who assisted us.

In Okinawan culture, respect for the aged is celebrated at various ages. Beiju is celebrated on the 8th

day of the 8th month for those reaching 88, and Kajimaya on the 9th day of the 9th month for those reaching 97 years. Both of those events were celebrated on Aug. 17 with a special ceremony starting with a parade of taiko drum, sanshin music and clanging of cymbals announcing the parade of celebrants dressed in kimonos carrying toy pinwheels symbolizing returning to child-like ways for the Kajimaya celebrants. The eight Beijumembers honored were Yoshiko Arakaki, Lillian Gima, Stella Isara, Elaine Kim, Rose Loui, Yoshiko Nakasone,

Hatsuko Nakata and Virginia Vance, and the three Kajimaya honorees were Nancy Ichikawa, ShizueIshihara and Ruth Onaga. Congratulations to all eleven honorees who received gifts of mochi symbolizing long life. The program continued with recognition of special guests; lighting of candles and “Banzais” led by Frank Toma and Henry Isara. Ippe Nifei Debiru to Toguchi-Nakasone Sensei who again provided the beautiful kimonos to dress all the celebrants, and to her dancers who provided the entertainment. The festive morning ended with everyone enjoying delicious bentos.

August birthdays were celebrated on Aug. 24with Masako Kawada (92) and Alice Miyasato (90) occupying the seats of honor. God bless all eight birthday celebrants with continued good health. Special birthday entertainment of Karaoke music was provided by TevitaAkina.

Keiro no Hi or Respect for the Aged Day is a national holiday in Japan that is celebrated every third Monday of September. It is a thoughtful and reasonable celebration, considering the longevity of the Japanese. It is like the Grandparents Day that is celebrated in Hawaii but far more serious and is not only limited to those who have grandchildren. An elderly person is a treasure for every household and it is thought that their wisdom should be shared with everyone. Respect for the Aged Day is all about respecting and appreciating your elders and that's really the best way to celebrate.

On August, we all enjoyed the bon odori of the Meiwa Kai Dance group and ending with everyone participating in dancing bon odori style to Tanko Bushi. Also entertaining were the Okinawan dancers from Sensei Misako Yagi's Yui Buyo class. On August 14, we heard from Val Yamada of Hui Malama Po'o and her experience of recovery from a stroke. It was very emotional and educational since Val spoke about the rehabilitation she went through to get to where she is today. On August 21, we were entertained by the talented karaoke singers from Kyoko Sano's class, which included two KZOO Champion singers.

Birthday celebrants for the month of September are: Yoshiko Kaneshiro (90+); Kurt Sekiya (90); and David Young (90+). Tanjoubi OmedetouGozaimasu!

FILIPINO CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE

By Puna Frank

The Filipino Cultural Club celebrated its’ 45th anniversary at the Pacific Beach Hotel on Sat. Aug. 26. The ladies were dressed in glittering gowns while the men showed off their hand sewn barongs. Members and guests crowded the dance floor with Bong’s music. Line dancing, two-stepping, tango-ing, samba-ing, fox trotting, and hip hopping was happening between the traditional Filipino dances. Two hours into the dancing caused hunger pains, which caused dessert to be consumed before lunch! Lunch featured 4 different veggie salads, hot rice, warm buns, fruit salad, BBQ chicken, and soft, delicious roast beef. Hot potato soup was set up on another table. Many diners had seconds. Service was way above average! All of this happened before the crowning of the 2018 Queen Letty Dolor. After the ceremony, dancing resumed. The dance floor was packed.

Much thank you’s to Iris and her elves for the colorful table decorations which lit the room. Mahalo to guest speakers State Senator Will Espero, Prog. Coordinator Susie Chun Oakland, and State Senator Karl Rhoads for their presence. Most importantly, hats off to FCC President Liwayway Asis, VP and outgoing Queen Trini Ramento, event hosts Jose Monterola and Remy Canon, music DJ Bong Acosta, and publicist Elmer Dela Cruz for their hardwork to make the event a success!

HAWAIIAN CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE

By Diana Antonio

Aloha Kakou! Our club is slowly getting out of a slump, and introduce a couple of new faces. Our new member is Kalehua Adams and her hanai niece is Loke Laronel. Loke is too young to join our club. Loke is our inspirational motivator. Loke teaches us Hawaiian words, songs and prayers. Kalehua is quick to confirm the words, or share new words, songs and prayers.

Materials were brought to Sharon Tulba who was in rehab who made up our birthday calendar even through moans and groans. The handles were wrapped with a green ribbon from Frances Dela Cruz. Frances is still sick at home, recovering. She hopes to visit soon! She wrote a special message to the club in the back of the calendar.

On Aug. 22nd, we colored books that Sharon brought it, on her first day back with us! On Sept. 5th, we will be selling pickled onions from 8:30 am –10:30 am. Please stop by to purchase a bottle or two. The ladies will be singing and playing the ukulele, and John Burrows will dance the hula. A hui hou!
